Microsoft teams for chromebook download DEFAULT

Hi Mark,

This is Wil, one of the independent advisor, an expert with Windows 10 and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I understand your concern about downloading Microsoft Teams on Chromebook.

Let's make sure first that you are downloading Microsoft Teams on the right channel. Kindly open the Google Play Store app and search Microsoft Teams on the search bar and hit the download button. You may also download it from this link. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=c...

If you encounter any error message with regards to download or installation, kindly provide it to me so I can check if its a Microsoft-related error or a Google-related error. I hope that you can reply back as quickly as possible so I can help you out further. Have a nice day.

Thanks,

Hi Wilfred.  Thanks for getting back with me.  I did type in the URL you sent me.  It said my device did not recognize that URL, but I was still able to put in Windows Teams in a search box on the same screen that stated my device did not recognize this URL.  I typed in Microsoft Teams, and that app came up.  I have been here a few times before.  When I go to install this app, it states it is already installed (on other android devices).  When I go to choose which device to download this app to, it gives me three choices - my current phone, and old phone, and an old Samsung laptop.  My current Asus C200MA is not even listed as an option.  And for the life of me, I could not figure out how to make it an option.  If you can crack that one, I would be most appreciative.  I have done internet and YouTube searches on that one, but so far have struck out completely.  Right now, after many hours, I am hoping to be able to get this to work, but in lieu of that, I would love to know whether this is a lost cause or not.  If it is a lost cause, then I will need to send this device back (I have a 30 day free return on this one) and probably get something running Windows.  But here is the rub with that second alternative.  One, cost.  But two, more than cost, it is weight.  I am really looking for a device that is under 3#.  Nurses and patients inside an emergency room will be using and moving this device around, and I would really like to have something light.  Anyway Wilfred, any assistance you can give me would be most appreciated.  Thanks, Mark

The link that I provided is actually the download link of Microsoft Teams on Google Play store app. It is not yet a lost cause but it would be better if you can get in touch with Google support for this since you should be able to download the Microsoft Team directly from the Google Play Store app. By the way, I have downloaded it on my Android devices and didn't encounter any problem with it.

Hi Wilfred.  I appreciate your effort to solve this issue.  I have spoken with Asus, the Chromebook manufacturer, and they told me this could not be done on this particular device.  I have decided to return this Chromebook and get a light and thin HP Stream 11.6" windows laptop.  It is more money, but it has windows, and that is what all of our other work and facility clients have on our/their devices.  And in regards to Teams working on Android, I was able to do this on my phone, but one of the functions was missing, and that was the function of a calendar and meet now option.  Asus told me that their chromebooks were not fully integrated with Android apps until their 2019 models.  I think the one I had was manufactured in 2014.  Again, thanks for your time and effort.  Mark

I do apologize if I wasn't able to help you resolve your issue. Perhaps the issue is really on the version of the Chromebook you have. Well atleast I'm glad that you were able to figure it out. And by the way, stay safe there and Goodluck to all the nurses and doctors.

I am trying to set up a 11.6" Asus Chromebook to be used in a hospital ER so we can do video conferencing using Microsoft Teams.  Before I purchased this Chromebook, I read that this could be done.  However, after I got this Chromebook, I have been unable to download a full version of Microsoft Teams onto this Chromebook.  I wanted to get a Chromebook because it is small, light, fast, and cheap, and I don't need this device for anything other than video conferencing.  So, here is my question:  Is there anyway to download a workable full version of Microsoft Teams on to a Chromebook with the operation system of Chrome OS Version 76.0.3809.136?  Thanks, Mark Enderle
The simply way to use Teams on Chromebook is just go to Teams on you address bar and enter your user name and password . No app is needed .

DO NOT purchase that HP stream.

I repeat! DO NOT GET IT!!

Once the updates are done, you can't even download a 2mb word file into that 32GB.
If its a different spec, you may proceed. But if it is 32GB, RUN!!

Edit: I checked the website. Now its available in 64GB version. I used the 32GB one with xubuntu until it was so unbearable that i tore it apart and snapped the processors away (I am generally a very placid and perseverant guy and don't enjoy wasting resources.)

I am quite sure the 64GB version will let you install the teams app at first, but after a couple of months, you'll sure start getting full screen obtrusive dialog boxes saying you need to clean up space for "necessary" updates. you wont have anything to delete, just the update bloats that you cant remove anyway. and a channels of dialogs with only "Ok" buttons and nothing else will lead to the microsoft page saying "Get a new pc".
I have been there.

DON'T DO IT!!

2020 has pushed everything online. Work meetings are on Zoom or Teams. Hanging out with friends and family on WhatsApp or Google Meet.

When it comes to Teams, Chromebook users have two options. You can either use the web version of Teams or install the Teams Android app.

Teams Web App

You can use the Teams web app without downloading or installing anything. All you need to is open a new tab and go to teams.microsoft.com to get started.

What if you are joining a meeting that you received?

Good question.

Click the meeting invite link and then look for the “Continue on this browser“.

Your Teams meeting will launch on a new Chrome tab.

Next, let me show you how to download and install the Teams Android app on your Chromebook.

You can enable desktop notifications when you log into the Teams app for the first time. To do this, click Yes on the prompt that appears on the lower right-hand corner of your screen.

If you enable notifications, you will see Teams notification where Chrome notifications appear in your Chromebook’s notification area.

Microsoft Teams Linux Preview on Chrome OS

How to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook

The increase in remote working and learning has led to a rise in the use of Microsoft Teams, thanks in part to its integration with Microsoft 365, Microsoft’s subscription service that bundles Microsoft Office, OneDrive, and other services together. Microsoft Teams can be used for text, voice, and video communications and has a host of other features to explore.

Microsoft also has excellent cross-platform support for its products, making Teams extremely useful in the workplace or the classroom. That includes the darling of the education world, the best Chromebooks, as Microsoft Teams works really well on Google-powered laptops.

In this article, we’ll show you everything you need to know on how to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook with two different methods; the web app and the Android app.

Do you prefer Zoom? Here's how to use Zoom on a Chromebook. To take screenshots for a presentation, take a look at our how to screenshot on a Chromebook guide.

How to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook: using the web app

Microsoft Teams has a full-featured web application accessible within the Chrome browser on a Chromebook. In most cases, this web app looks and behaves the same as the Windows 10 desktop client and has most of the same features. This makes it the preferable way to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook.

The only thing you really need is a Microsoft Account login. If you’re using Microsoft Teams as part of an enterprise account or through your school, you will use the login provided to you rather than a personal Microsoft Account.

You also have the option to ‘install’ Microsoft Teams like an application on your Chromebook and use it in its own dedicated window separate from the main browser. The Teams web app also supports desktop notifications so you won’t miss anything important.

1. Go to the Microsoft Teams login page

Open the Google Chrome browser on your Chromebook and navigate to the Microsoft Teams login portal at teams.microsoft.com

You will be immediately presented with the login box where you should enter the email address attached to your account and your password. You may also need to authenticate any 2FA (two-factor authentication) you have enabled.

Once done, you’ll be presented with your Microsoft Teams environment and it’s time to set it up and go explore.

2. Enable desktop notifications

When you first log in to your Microsoft Teams account you’ll be presented with a message in the lower right-hand corner of the screen asking if you want to enable notifications.

It’s a good idea to turn them on now, as it simply takes a click or tap on the ‘Turn on’ button. If you don’t want them, you can dismiss this message and get right into Teams.

With notifications on you will receive desktop notifications via Chrome in the regular notifications area of your Chromebook.

3. Install the Microsoft Teams web app

It isn’t necessary to do this in order to use the Microsoft Teams web app, as you can simply use it on a browser tab in Chrome if you wish. But if you want a more desktop app-like experience you can add this shortcut.

In the Chrome tab you have open on Microsoft Teams, click on the three dots in the top right-hand corner to open the menu. Scroll down and select ‘More tools’ and then click on ‘Create shortcut’.

You can now give it any name you wish, but to make sure Microsoft Teams opens in its own window you must make sure to check the box next to ‘Open as window. From now on you’ll be able to launch Microsoft Teams from the app drawer or pin it to your shelf.

How to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook: using the Android app

By virtue of Google building native Android support into Chrome OS it is entirely possible to run the Microsoft Teams Android application instead of using the web app. In most cases, the experience will be similar, but due to how Android apps scale and behave in landscape orientation, it may also be sub-par.

As far as actually using the app goes you only need the same account login information as the web app. Since it was designed for smaller, touch-based devices, too, it’s particularly useful on something like the Lenovo Chromebook Duet

One advantage the Android app does have is that you can use it in a small window and it will behave like it would on a smartphone. This makes it great to have snapped to the side of your regular browser so it’s always visible while you work.

1. Go to the Google Play Store on your Chromebook

On all modern Chromebooks, the Google Play Store is pre-installed and will link to the same Google account you use to login to the laptop.

Locate the Google Play Store in your app drawer and open it up. Ensure your search box says 'Apps & Games' and not 'Movies & TV' or 'Books' and search for Microsoft Teams.

The official app will be the first in the list, hit the green 'Install' button to download it to your Chromebook.

2. Login with your Microsoft Account

The next step is to log in with the correct credentials. If you’re using Teams with your company or a school account, then you’ll have to log in with the email address and password for those.

Personal accounts can be used on Microsoft Teams, but unless you’re linked to the rest of your team with it then it won’t be of any use to you here.

Simply enter the account email address, followed by either a password or if you’re using the Microsoft Account single sign-on, responding to the notification in your mobile Microsoft Authenticator app.

3. Settings and permissions

Because this is an Android application you will be prompted for a number of different permissions for the app to access the hardware on your Chromebook. The web app will ask for permission to use your microphone and camera, but they do look a little different in Android apps.

You also have a few more settings to change, including a much-loved dark theme if that’s how you like your apps to look.

Notifications from the Microsoft Teams Android app will be delivered in the same way any other notification on your Chromebook is, with a popup (if allowed) in the lower-right corner. If you’re in a voice or video meeting, you’ll get a permanent notification in the notifications tray allowing you to quickly switch back to the meeting or to hang up without having the app in the foreground.

Summary

These are two different methods to get the same end result, which is a full-featured Microsoft Teams experience on a Chromebook.

At the moment, we would recommend using the web app, as it’s a little more tailored for the desktop environment. Thanks to the way Chrome OS handles web apps, you can also use it in a dedicated window if you prefer to keep your tab spam to a minimum.

A note should also be made regarding the Linux app for Microsoft Teams. You can use many Linux apps on a Chromebook, but at this point, the Teams desktop client doesn’t work properly. You’re not really losing anything using the web app or the Android app instead, but there may be a future for the Linux client as it matures.
