Amazon is continuing to hire across Pennsylvania as part of the e-commerce giant’s national push for 100,000 new part- and full-time workers.

The online retailer now is hiring 1,000 full-time employees at its new fulfillment center in Hamburg, Berks County. Employees hired at that hub will join more than 16,000 full- and part-time employees already working statewide for Amazon.

The 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center, located on Mountain Road, plans to launch its operations by the end of the year. Employees will work alongside innovative technologies to pick, pack and ship smaller customer items, such as apparel, in a safe and inclusive work environment, Amazon representatives said.

Starting pay for the new jobs is expected to be $15 an hour and $16 an hour for those working in Hamburg, as well as up to $500 sign-on bonus. Benefits -- including health, vision and dental insurance; 401K plans with a 50% company match; up to 20 weeks paid parental leave; and an innovative career choice program -- additionally are offered on the first day of employment.

Amazon also has pledged to invest more than $700 million to provide up-skilling training for its 100,000 employees for in-demand jobs. Programs will help employees of all backgrounds access training to move into highly-skilled roles across the company’s corporate offices, tech hubs, fulfillment centers, retail stores, and transportation network, or pursue career paths outside of Amazon, representatives said.

Amazon has 14 fulfillment and sorting centers in Pennsylvania as well as seven delivery stations, a tech hub, and an air hub. Amazon also operates 15 Whole Foods Market stores and four Amazon Hub Locker+ locations in the state.

The company said these investments have contributed an additional $11.7 billion to the Pennsylvania economy and have helped create 17,200 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires – from jobs in construction and logistics to professional services. More than 52,000 independent authors and small and medium businesses in Pennsylvania are selling to customers in Amazon’s store, creating thousands of additional jobs across the state.

Amazon has invested more than $4 billion from June to April on coronavirus pandemic-related safety measures. This includes spending more than $800 million to implement temperature checks and supply masks, enhanced cleaning products, gloves, and sanitation stations.

Amazon has announced it is now hiring more than 1,000 full-time positions at its new fulfillment center in Hamburg, PA, continuing its growth and investment in the Keystone state.

Massive Berks County warehouse gets its tenant: Amazon, which is planning to hire more than 1,000 workers

Amazon is leasing a 1,008,867-square-foot warehouse at 3563 Mountain Road in Upper Bern Township, near Hamburg in Berks County. There, Amazon plans to launch a fulfillment center late this year or early next year.

Just west of the Lehigh Valley, Amazon is planning to deliver more than 1,000 full-time jobs at a new fulfillment center in Berks County.

Amazon late Tuesday confirmed it signed a lease this year for a 1 million-square-foot warehouse at 3563 Mountain Road in Upper Bern Township, near Hamburg and about 40 minutes from Allentown.

Amazon spokesperson Rachael Lighty said the company expects the building will open late this year or in early 2021, though the timeline is flexible. At the center, employees will pick, pack and ship smaller customer items, such as apparel.

Lighty said hiring information will be shared closer to the building’s opening. Workers, who will start at hourly wages of $15 and up and get benefits, will be permanent, full-time Amazon employees, not temporary workers, she said. Some positions already are listed online, such as an on-site medical representative and an injury prevention specialist.

For Amazon, the fulfillment center bolsters its presence in Pennsylvania, where the online behemoth already has more than 10,000 full-time workers. Amazon is one of the Lehigh Valley’s largest employers, with about 3,000 full-time employees at facilities in Breinigsville in Upper Macungie Township and in Palmer Township. Lighty said more than 95% of Amazon’s employees in the Lehigh Valley are in permanent, full-time roles.

The Berks facility will give Amazon another location to fulfill online orders, a business where growth only has accelerated during the coronavirus pandemic. While the new Berks building and Amazon’s Breinigsville operations are separated by just 30 miles, Lighty said work will not be shifted away from the Lehigh Valley.

“This building will supplement and support our current operations in Pennsylvania, as we continue to see increased customer demand,” she said.

Last week, Amazon disclosed that second-quarter net sales increased 40% to nearly $89 billion, compared with $63 billion a year earlier. While expenses also increased, with Amazon spending $4 billion in the quarter on coronavirus-related costs such as purchasing personal protective equipment for employees and cleaning its buildings, net income still hit $5.2 billion, doubling profit from last year’s second quarter.

The building Amazon will occupy, dubbed 78 Trade Center, also shows the geographic widening of the Lehigh Valley industrial market, which is one of the country’s fastest-growing logistics hubs. While developers are still finding some well-located, properly zoned industrial sites in the Lehigh Valley, that task is getting more difficult as the market has boomed, tightening available land and pushing development just outside the area’s borders.

The brochure for 78 Trade Center, developed by Trammell Crow Co. of Texas and owned by USAA Real Estate Co., notes the building is just off Exit 23 of Interstate 78 and “close to the logistics hubs of Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton.” The brochure also lists the proximity to facilities operated by FedEx and UPS in the Lehigh Valley.

A report last week from commercial real estate services firm Colliers International stated that the Berks County industrial market is improving as leasing and development opportunities become more limited in Lehigh and Northampton counties.

Berks is “seen as a low-cost alternative” to the Lehigh Valley, helping tenant activity grow. For example, in addition to Amazon’s signing a lease for 78 Trade Center, the company also took a 600,000-square-foot facility outside Reading, Colliers noted.

Industrial vacancy in Berks, however, is still at 20%, down from a peak of 37% at the end of 2019 but well behind the Lehigh Valley, where vacancy hovers around 4% and rental rates continue to increase, Colliers said.

So far this year, the Lehigh Valley has seen several noteworthy industrial leases and a few projects begin.

For instance, Geodis, a third-party logistics provider, signed a lease for the more than 1 million-square-foot building at 951 Willowbrook Road in Allen Township. Geodis hasn’t answered questions about the project, making it unclear which company or companies it will serve out of the building.

A first-quarter report from commercial real estate firm Newmark Knight Frank provides a hint, however, naming the Willowbrook Road building tenant as “Geodis (Apple).” Like Geodis, technology giant Apple Inc. also has not responded to inquiries from The Morning Call.

In a smaller warehouse, medical supply distributor TwinMed moved into a newly completed 190,000-square-foot space at 1198 Feather Way in Bethlehem in mid-April, a consolidation and expansion of the company’s Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey operations, Colliers said in a news release April 14.

As TwinMed is a major supplier of personal protective equipment, it was granted a waiver early in the pandemic to allow for the completion of construction on the Feather Way facility.
