Instant film cameras may be the most perfect example of how yesterday’s analog technology gets a digital-age update for our nostalgia-obsessed world. Sure, we have high-performing DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and readily accessible pocket cameras via our smartphones, but we still love the immediacy and physical souvenirs we get with the best instant cameras.

There really is nothing that mixes convenience with retro charm quite like a good instant camera, and thanks to their recent revival, instant camera film is now readily available and affordable again. Polaroid is back, baby, along with neo-classics from Fujifilm, Kodak and others. You can even photograph using instant cameras with a wild assortment of different instant camera films, too.

Whether you’ve been inspired by found family portraits from back in the day or you’re simply looking for a brand new way to snap memories in the new year, here are the best of the best instant cameras to help capture your life in 2021.

1. Fujifilm Instax Mini 11

BEST OVERALL

This cutely colored Instax Mini 11 is the latest Fujifilm instant camera, and will have you looking like the life of the party. The Mini 11 is the newest version of the Fujifilm Instax and will transform the way you photograph. Though this one is rather bulky, the eye-catching, sky blue hue makes up for it, so none of your subjects will ever want to look away from the lens. You can also get this in a couple of new updated colors like purple and black. Naturally, it even has a selfie mode, because why else would you get a camera in 2021? Instax Mini cameras have always been the most popular instant film cameras in existence for the past couple of years, so it’s best to get your hands on it ASAP.

2. Polaroid Go

NEW RELEASE

Polaroid is constantly changing the instant camera game for the better — and as they should. The Polaroid Go is the company’s brand new baby and just launched on April 27 of this year. This camera is all about having a small size to take with you whenever, wherever. It’s not only portable but also wearable for easy snapping. There are self-timer and selfie options as well, so grab a group or take pics solo. In our testing, the Polaroid Go produces photo prints that are a bit smaller and darker than we’d prefer, so you’ll want to take photos up close and with bright lighting.

3. Polaroid Now I-Type Instant Film Camera

BEST OG

Polaroid is the OG of the instant film game. So, if you’re shopping for the best instant cameras, it’s no surprise that you’ll find Polaroid products everywhere you look. The original Polaroid camera you remember from the golden days has been revamped into the Polaroid Now I-Type instant camera, and it’s absolutely a change for the better. The simple one-button design and retro exterior come with autofocus, which is a serious improvement from the original. This will have you wanting to scream OutKast lyrics as you’re shooting, which is exactly what you know you want. Shake it like a Polaroid picture baby!

4. KODAK Smile Instant Print Digital Camera

BEST SIZE

When reviewing the best instant cameras, size was one of our top considerations. After all, for on-the-go fun, you want something that can easily fit into your pocket or bag, but most instant cameras are way too bulky for keeping in your back pocket. That’s where the KODAK Smile comes in. This one-pounder uses a slide-open design and an integrated inkless printer to transform a tiny digital camera into a cool, party-friendly mix of digital and instant analog. Like our favorite portable photo printers, it makes 2 x 3-inch prints using the ZINK process with a sticky back to easily put your finished products wherever. For weekend adventures and spontaneous outings, this travel-friendly gadget is the best instant camera for capturing memories.

5. Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 Instant Camera

BEST VINTAGE LOOKING

Like the Polaroid Go and KODAK Smile, the brand-new Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 is all about size, size, size — proving that bigger isn’t always better. Super easy to use and featuring a vintage Fujifilm design, this baby is a new classic we simply can’t pass up. Unlike most other instant film cameras, the Mini 40 automatically detects brightness which controls the amount of flash given to the subject, which normally promises a non-washed exposure when the film is fully developed. No lens? No problem. Pull out the lens to take as many selfies as you want whenever you want. Each camera weighs 1-lb in total and makes 2 x 3-inch prints. Sadly, like the Polaroid Go, you can’t buy this one just yet — but you will be able to very soon.

6. Polaroid Instant Digital

BEST HI-TECH

This larger-than-life, Tamogachi-esque digital camera and instant printer from Polaroid combines the physicality of an instant camera with some advanced digital features. It lets you record GIFS, 1080p video clips and even lets you edit the photos. While this is all really cool for an instant camera, it definitely does not have that old-school feel that most people are seeking when they’re trying to fill that nostalgic void. But, if you’re one who loves combining the old with the new, the Polaroid Instant Digital is a hundred percent for you.

7. Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6

BEST SQUARE FORMAT

After we say it, you won’t be able to unsee it: This camera looks identical to Instagram’s original app icon from back in the day. Sorry, it needed to be said. This Instax Square SQ6 uses square-style film and auto-calculates surrounding light in order to perfect the shot’s exposure. Coming with orange, green and purple color filters, feel free to snap some funky shots with this one. Oh, and did we mention that the camera has a range-switching focusing meter for landscapes, portraits and macros? We were shocked, too.

8. Polaroid X Teva 600 Instant Camera

BEST COLLABORATION

Polaroid is bringing us back in time with their recent collab with Teva. Yeah, we said it, recent. Although this collab looks ages-old due to the exterior of the camera, it isn’t. This camera features a flash and comes with a strap for easier holding. It’s got Polaroid and Teva decals decorating the camera and sticks to a classic Teva-esque coloration. All in all, we are kind of swooning over this one, so you should be too. You better act fast, though, these are limited edition so they won’t be around forever.

9. Fujifilm Instax Mini Liplay Hybrid Instant Camera

BEST FUJIFILM HYBRID

It shouldn’t come as a surprise when we say that although Polaroid is probably the most synonymous name with the instant camera format, Fujifilm is crushing the instant camera game right now. Seriously, the majority of cameras on this list are from Fujifilm and are exceptional options to choose from. The Instax Mini Liplay Hybrid is a camera that combines the old, instant print functionality you’re looking for with an extra feature that can send images directly to your smartphone using Bluetooth. This makes posting seamless images with that retro aesthetic to Instagram a simple act, making this one of the best cameras for Gen Z.

10. Kodak Mini Shot 2 Retro Portable Wireless Instant Camera

BEST MULTI-FUNCTIONAL

The Kodak Mini Shot 2 is a point, shoot and print on the spot that skips the development-to-scan process. We know, we know, that just makes it a more compact instant film camera. But get this: you can shoot while your photo is still printing, so there’s no wasted time in between. All prints come with an adhesive backside, perfect for sticking on your notebook or bedroom walls. All images save to an SD card too, so you don’t even need paper inside to get snapping. Best of all? You can even connect this baby via Bluetooth to see your images on your iOS or Android devices. For all these reasons, it’s one of the best instant cameras of 2021, especially if you’re heading out of town on a long-delayed vacation.

This Instax camera also distinguishes itself from other models with some nice photographer-friendly elements like an f1.4 lens, a flash and a somewhat manual focus. While this is definitely one of our bulkier picks, the unique, unusual print orientation will make up for it.

Welcome to our guide to the best instant cameras you can buy. From Polaroid to Instax, we’ve tested all of the latest retro cameras and ranked our favorites in the list below. So whether you want a cheap instant camera for trying analogue photography or a user-friendly companion for point-and-shoot fun, you’ll find the right one for you in this regularly updated guide.

What’s the best instant camera you can buy in 2021? While it’s tricky to pick a single winner for everyone, we think the best choice for most people is the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11. It’s an affordable, accessible instant camera with a compact body and simple controls. It’s easy enough for almost anyone to use, yet still capable of producing fun prints with largely accurate auto exposure. Plus the barrel pops out for close-up photos.

But if you’re looking for an instant camera with more advanced shooting modes, you might prefer something like the Polaroid Now+. Capable of producing large, detailed and vibrant prints, it can also connect to the smartphone app to unlock a whole range of creative control options, including aperture priority and manual exposure modes.

Whatever kind of instant camera you’re shopping for, our guide features all of the best instant cameras you can buy. As well as the latest releases, it includes a few slightly older options which continue to represent excellent value. We keep this list regularly updated to make sure you’ll always find the best instant camera for your budget. And if you’re not sure where to start, you might find it useful to read out buying tips at the bottom of this list.

How to pick the best instant camera for you

While most instant cameras are simple and relatively affordable, there are still a few key things to think about when picking the best instant camera for your needs and budget.

The cheapest models will usually amount to little more than toy cameras with basic point-and-shoot settings. These are fine if you just want a straightforward camera for fun party snaps. But you’ll need to spend a little more for modes like macro-focusing, while the higher-end is where you’ll find hybrid digital functionality. This allows you to hook up your camera to a smartphone for further creative controls – or to produce physical prints from your smartphone’s camera roll.

Print quality and size are also worth considering. Although no instant brand delivers super-accurate results (that’s part of the vintage charm), Instax arguably produces the most natural images. Polaroid prints tend to have a dreamier look, which can be just as appealing, depending on your preferences. Films also come in different sizes to suit specific cameras, so it’s worth considering whether you’ll want pocket-sized prints or something bigger.

While instant cameras are generally affordable, you’ll need to factor in the cost of film. It can add up pretty quickly, so pay attention to the price per pack – and think about how many pictures you’re likely to shoot on a regular basis. Polaroid film tends to be pricier than Instax – for the price of a single pack of eight color Polaroid I-Type shots, you can get two packs of ten Instax Mini film.

Some instant cameras with digital screens or smartphone connectivity allow you to preview your shots before printing them out, to dramatically reduce wastage (and therefore the cost of dud snaps).

Best instant cameras in 2021:

1. Fujifilm Instax Mini 11

Improves on a classic, while keeping the price right

Specifications

Lens: 60mm

Focusing: Normal and macro

Flash: Built-in

Self-timer: None

Reasons to buy

+Largely accurate auto exposure+Easy for beginners+Compact design

Reasons to avoid

-Instax Mini prints rather small-No advanced features for pros

If you're looking for an affordable, easy-to-use camera that won't overwhelm anyone that's new to instant photography, Fujifilm's Instax Mini 11 is our current favorite.

It may lack the more advanced modes and controls that you'll find on more expensive models, but that's a big part of its charm. An auto exposure system takes out a lot of the guesswork, meaning you just have to point and shoot to get decent credit card-sized instant prints.

A tiny mirror built into the front of the camera and a pop-out lens barrel for close-ups means it's easy to get an instant selfie, while the affordable packs of Instax Mini film make it a great addition to any party. It's available in a range of fun colors, so you should be able to find one that suits your style.

Another great thing about the Instax Mini 11 is how great it is as a present. Available at a reasonable price, it'd make a lovely gift for a photography fan – especially young ones – who are keen to experiment with the medium. Remember to factor in some extra cash for film, though.

2. Polaroid Now+

Polaroid’s most versatile instant camera to date

Specifications

Lens: 35-40mm

Focusing: Autofocus

Flash: Built-in

Self-timer: Yes

Reasons to buy

+Perfectly sized prints+App versatility via Bluetooth

Reasons to avoid

-Pricier film than rivals-A little bulky

Combining the boxy form factor, dual-lens autofocus and detailed image quality of the Polaroid Now with the Bluetooth connectivity of the OneStep+, the revamped Now+ is Polaroid’s most complete instant camera yet. Connecting to the updated smartphone app opens up a realm of creative shooting modes: in addition to self-timer, double exposure, light painting and manual exposure options, there’s now an aperture propriety mode for experimenting with depth of field, as well as a tripod mode for use with the new screw mount beneath.

So while the Now+ remains as straightforward to use as any point-and-shoot, it’s also a great option for getting creative. What limits creativity a little is the cost of Polaroid I-Type film, which makes you think twice about wasting shots. But when you get it right, prints are just as instant photos should be: large, delicious, vintage-style squares which come to full color in 10-15 minutes.

These Instant Cameras Include Some of the Best Features From Digital Photography

Products featured are independently selected by our editorial team and we may earn a commission from purchases made from our links; the retailer may also receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Smartphone photography has allowed us to snap and send high-resolution photos and videos around the world in minutes, but most of them stay on your device or social media page. Taking and holding a physical picture, like playing vinyl, is a more hands-on experience that can’t be replicated by tapping on a screen.

Most of us don’t have access to a darkroom, but instant cameras — made famous by Polaroid — have a tiny printer built into them, so you can frame your shot, push the shutter button, and have a developed photo in about a minute.

If you’re an avid photographer looking for a new medium, or want a fun way to chronicle an important event, an instant camera is a great solution.

What Are the Best Instant Cameras?

There are many factors to consider when choosing the best instant cameras for you; below are the most important ones, which we considered while we were researching this list.

Size: All of the instant cameras we’re recommending are of the handheld, point-and-shoot style. Not all of them will fit in your pocket, but you’ll have no problem fitting them in a small backpack.

Battery: Most of the cameras in this guide run on rechargeable batteries, but some require you to pop in a pair of AAs.

Flash: Every camera below has a flash, which makes it easier to get better pictures at night.

Digital features: The point of using an instant camera is to get a physical print of the photo you take, but some have integrated welcome digital features that make them easier to use. The biggest one is the ability to save a picture to a MicroSD card in addition to creating an actual physical photograph.

Here are our favorite instant cameras to pick up right now.

1. Best Overall: Kodak Smile Instant Camera

Kodak Smile Instant Camera

Amazon

Kodak’s Smile Instant Camera has earned the top spot on our list by bridging the analog and digital divide with style.

The camera is shaped like a modern point-and-shoot, and its thin frame makes it possible to slip into your pocket. It has a 10MP (megapixel) sensor, and a flash that automatically adjusts based on how much light it detects in the scene. Around the back of the camera is an LCD screen that you can use as a viewfinder, and a series of buttons you can use to view photographs you’ve taken, apply filters, borders or effects, and set a timer.

These are all features you’d expect to find on a digital camera, but this one has a built-in printer, so you can make two-inch by three-inch photographs at the push of a button. You can choose to have every picture you take printed automatically, or change the setting to allow you to manually print photos you think are really good. The photos are printed on ink-free zinc paper, so you don’t have to worry about smudging or waiting for them to dry. The photo paper Kodak uses is adhesive on one side, so you can stick them on a notebook, fridge, or in a scrapbook without worrying that they’ll fall out.

This camera has a rechargeable battery, and Kodak says you can take up to 40 shots before you have to plug it in. Its internal memory can hold up to five pictures at a time, but you can pop in a MicroSD Card that can store hundreds of shots.

Kodak’s Smile Instant Camera offers modern convenience features alongside the ability to print any photo you’ve taken in a matter seconds. It’s a best-of-both-worlds approach in a slim, pocket-friendly camera.

2. Best Smart Features: Polaroid Originals OneStep+

Polaroid Originals OneStep+

Amazon

Polaroid may have popularized the instant camera, but the OneStep+ puts a modern spin on this classic.

One thing Polaroid didn’t change about the OneStep+ is it’s look. This camera has the same wedge shape as the company’s older models, which makes it easy to hold, but too big for your pocket. There’s a manual viewfinder on the back, so you can hold the OneStep+ right up to your eye to frame your pictures before you take them.

Polaroid lets you switch between two lenses: a portrait lens for subjects between one and three feet away, and a standard lens for taking snapshots of subjects further than three feet away. The camera has a flash, which Kodak says is “powerful,” so you should have little problem getting good results in dim environments.

Like Kodak, Polaroid built some digital features into the OneStep+. It runs on a rechargeable battery, which you can recharge with the included MicroUSB cable. You can also pair the camera to your phone (iOS and Android) over Bluetooth to adjust the camera’s photo settings manually, or set a double exposure (leave the shutter open longer to get two images on one print).

The pictures you take with the OneStep+ are automatically printed onto a sheet of Polaroid Originals Color Film, which you’ll need to get separately. Polaroid recommends shielding the printed photos from light for 15 minutes as they develop.

If you want an authentic instant camera experience with a few digital enhancements, Polaroid’s OneStep+ is a great option.

Buy:Polaroid Originals OneStep+ at$120.00

3. Best Analog Pick: Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera

Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 Instant Camera

Amazon

Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 11 is the latest entry in the company’s line of all-analog instant cameras.

The camera has a square shape, with a protruding grip on the right side that makes it easy to hold one handed. You won’t be able to fit the Instax Mini 11 in a pocket, but you can definitely stash it in a small bag. It runs on a pair of AA batteries, but Fujifilm doesn’t give an estimate on how many pictures you can take before having to change them.

If you’re an analog purist, the Instax Mini 11 is the right instant camera for you. There’s no Bluetooth support, no mini LCD viewfinder, no extra effects, and no way to store your pictures on a MicroSD card to view later. You click the button, and a two-inch by three-inch picture comes out of the slot on the side. Fujifilm doesn’t bundle this camera with film, or give any instructions on how to get the best results, but we recommend leaving it out of direct light for a couple of minutes to develop.

It may not be a smart camera, but the Instax Mini 11 does have some nice convenience features that make it easier for you to get the right shot. It automatically adjusts to the right level of exposure, which includes managing the intensity of its flash to make sure your subject and the background are lit appropriately.

You can switch between macro (close up) and standard shooting modes depending on the distance between you and what you’re taking pictures of. There’s even a selfie-mode, which you can engage by pulling out the lens to increase its level of zoom; the Instax 11 Mini has a little mirror next to the lens, so you can frame your picture before taking it.

If the only thing you look for in an instant camera is the ability to click a shutter button and get a print of your shot, Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 11 is one you should get.
