GameCube style controllers are widely considered the preferred way to play Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate. Pull off precise attacks using octagonal gated sticks, larger A button, and nostalgic muscle memory on this officially licensed Bluetooth wireless controller for Nintendo Switch from PowerA.

PowerA has an extensive line of controllers, both wired and wireless, available for Nintendo Switch (and other consoles), but their GameCube Style Controllers are probably my favorite. True to the original design of the wired GameCube Controller with easy to use wireless capability!

PowerA Wireless GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch

Having almost exclusively used only first party controllers since the days of going to a friend’s house and getting stuck with a Mad Catz abomination, I wasn’t sure what to expect picking up one of PowerA’s recreations. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised!

PowerA Wireless GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch

Since PowerA’s GameCube Style Controllers feature Bluetooth 5.0 you won’t have to worry about it sucking down the battery life, or keeping track of any dongles or adapters — the Switch supports wireless connectivity right away. These feature motion controls, but don’t support HD Rumble, IR, or NFC for amiibo. My only gripe is they’re not rechargeable. Two AA batteries are included in the box, and PowerA claims 30 hours of use out of each pair, but I would have loved for this thing to be USB type C rechargeable!

There are five different colors to choose from: Gold (GameStop exclusive), Silver, Purple, Black, and Grey

Retailing for $49.99, which is awfully close to the $56.99 price point the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has been sitting at on Amazon for a few months now, but if you love the feeling of a GameCube controller, and have been wanting to use one wirelessly on your Switch, PowerA’s GameCube Style Controller is the one to buy!

Available from Amazon, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.

Andrew has been a nerd his whole life. He built his first computer when he was 8, started working in the IT industry at 15, and played competitive Counter-Strike at 16. His interest in amiibo started before their release but didn’t really take off until after the new year. He doesn’t like to admit it but Little Mac and WFT are among the amiibo that he had pre-ordered from Amazon but cancelled before their release. Little did he know a few months later he’d help start Amiibo Alerts. Gaming has always been his passion. He grew up with an NES, Sega Genesis, and PS2 before realizing that PCs truly are better than consoles.

The urge to be a little better, brought on by being a gamer, is what pushes him to help make Amiibo Alerts and Nintendeal amazing communities. Together with the team he has built, he is realizing a life-long dream: bringing something helpful and fun to a large group of people. Andrew’s role at Amiibo Alerts and Nintendeal as Founder and Editor in Chief allows him to create and build contacts within the community, review and present products, and stay on top of all things Nintendo.

Plays: Switch, PC, Xbox One, PS4, WiiU, 3DS, Vita, and board games.

The best Nintendo Switch GameCube controller

Which Nintendo Switch GameCube controllers are best?

GameCube controllers, inspired by the Nintendo GameCube console from the early 2000s, are still beloved by Nintendo fans and new players. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players prefer this type of controller because it provides a similar feeling to the control layout in Melee, an earlier installment in the Smash series.

For an officially licensed GameCube-inspired controller by a reliable brand, the top choice is the PowerA Wireless GameCube Style Controller. It comes in multiple styles and is designed to function specifically with the Nintendo Switch.

What to know before you buy a Nintendo Switch GameCube controller

Which games you want to play

Depending on what games you usually play, a GameCube-style controller may not be the best option. For example, you can play Super Mario Odyssey with a GameCube controller, but dive jumping is not possible. However, the controllers are excellent for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and provide much better control than the regular joy cons.

Wired vs. wireless

If you have a room layout not set up for wired controllers to easily reach from the seat to the console, you may want a wireless controller. There are both wired and wireless GameCube controller options for the Nintendo Switch. If you opt for wireless, consider what batteries it needs.

Pro controller

For Nintendo Switch controller options aside from GameCube-style products, look at the top selections from BestReviews. Some players prefer the GameCube controller design, but others may like the pro controller better.

What to look for in a quality Nintendo Switch GameCube controller

Power source

Wireless controllers usually are powered by separately purchased batteries or by a rechargeable internal battery. Wired controllers get their power through the Nintendo Switch console. Something to consider is that you must plug a wired controller into a Nintendo Switch dock as opposed to the console itself. Wireless controllers can connect to the Switch while the console is not plugged in, but you can’t easily use wired controllers on the go.

Additional features

The original GameCube controllers do not have modern features like certain Nintendo Switch system controls or gyroscopic motion functions. New GameCube-inspired controllers usually have the additional quality-of-life features or even turbo-mode options, but it varies depending on the model.

Durability

The less-expensive GameCube controllers for the Nintendo Switch may not last for long periods of use. Not all controllers are designed to hold up to rough handling, and joysticks are especially vulnerable to drifting and problems, depending on the model.

How much you can expect to spend on a Nintendo Switch GameCube controller

You can purchase a wired option for less than $30. Wireless GameCube-style controllers run about $30-$60.

Nintendo Switch GameCube controller FAQ

Can you use an old GameCube controller?

A. If you have an old GameCube controller lying around, you can use it for the Nintendo Switch. However, you need an adapter to plug it in and play. Some adapters work better than others, but one benefit of using a classic controller and an adapter like this one is that you can plug it into a PC, too.

Is a GameCube-style controller better?

A. It depends on the game. There is only one actual analog stick on a GameCube controller, so it is practically unusable for an FPS game. Some fighting games work better with a GameCube controller while others do not have varying input priority. If all possible inputs are equally common or you do not need to press multiple buttons at the same time during gameplay, a GameCube controller is unlikely to be superior to any other controller.

Is This The Best Gamecube Controller For Your Nintendo Switch?

4 best Nintendo Switch controllers for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

If you're coming to grips with Min-Min or simply trying to best your next-door neighbor in Smash Bros. Ultimate, feeling good about your game can be tough. Perhaps your foe simply has a better controller? Thankfully, that's an easy thing to fix. These four accessories will help take your Smash Ultimate skills to the next level.

4. HORI Nintendo Switch Wireless HORIPAD Mario Edition Rechargeable Controller

Imagine you're stuck in a rock and a hard place. You'd love a brand new controller, but can't justify getting one just for Smash. The HORI Wireless controller will work with all your favorite games and allow for ample battery life. It's set up like an Xbox controller. Make sure to give it to friends that aren't adjusted to Nintendo consoles, so they don't have an excuse when they lose. One unfortunate caveat: it's charged using a Micro-USB, so it won't fit with the Switch's USB-C ports without an adapter.

3. PowerA Wireless GameCube-style Controller

If you've ever dealt with a Smashveteran, there's no doubt you've heard tales of the glory of the GameCube controller. Perhaps you've been told that if you're not using a GameCube controller, there's no point to even playing Smash.

They're the status quo for good reason, but Nintendo's licensed goods have nothing on the PowerA Wireless GameCube controller. This one is wireless, allowing it to be utilized from a distance. The controller has modern Nintendo Switch buttons like "home" and "screenshot" seamlessly combined with the classic GameCube setup. Buy this one if you're a gamer that respects the past while looking towards the present.

2. Mayflash F300 Arcade Fight Stick

If you're more adept at Street Fighter II than Smash, you might consider swapping to an arcade-style control setup. You can map every Smash Bros. technique you know to the Mayflash F300. It's a comfortable, intuitive setup that's good for long play sessions with friends and honing your skills to their sharpest. If you one day leave Smash behind, the Mayflash is compatible with Xbox One, PC, and PS4, too.

1.Classic Smash GameCube controller and adapter

While cumbersome and wirebound, the GameCube controller has become standard-issue among competitive Smash players for a reason. You're going to trade out all the modern conveniences present on a normal Switch controller for the sake of being the best. The deep trigger buttons and maneuverable C-Stick give you ample reason to come back to this one. When you're playing Smash, there's really nothing

Make sure to always get an official Nintendo-made GameCube adapter, if you do need one. Other brands can be finicky and won't always work.

Nintendo Switch Wireless Gamecube Controller Review...

I was free at that time as a young man and the summer atmosphere suggested certain thoughts about the opposite sex. Despite the fact that several female images sat tightly in my head - both women who were really familiar to me, and faces that I knew only. Virtually, with whom in my dreams was going on dear to my heart chaos, in reality everything was somewhat more prosaic and after parting with Galya I've been alone for two months now.

Sex though in May was present only once.
