What's a rising sign in my horoscope?
Many people know their star sign, which is known as a sun sign.
But as the name suggests, the rising sign – also known as the ascendant sign – is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon the moment you were born.
It is one of “three legs” of your birth chart, along with your moon sign, and these three signs are said to make up the foundation of your personality, according to those who believe in horoscopes.
Your moon sign is said to indicate the “inner you”, but the rising star can reveal more about the “outer” you, and is what most people see as their first impression of you.
How do I calculate my rising sign?
To calculate your rising sign, you'll need your star sign and the hour that you were born.
In this handy table by Ask the Astrologers, look down the left column for your star sign, and then move along to the hour you were born.
Once you have your symbol, look down the left column to again to see what it corresponds to.
If you don't know your star sign you can find it out here.

What Your Rising Sign Means
Your Rising Sign, also called the Ascendant, is the Zodiac Sign that was on the Eastern Horizon in the sky at the moment you were born. As such, it represents your first impression on the world, who you appear to be when people first meet you, at a party or work for example, as well as what your natural tendencies and temperament are. It can also represent how you would like to be known as and your physical appearance.
In your Natal Chart, the Planetary ruler of your Rising Sign is also said to be the so-called ruler of your whole chart, like the captain of your ship. It is the lens through which you view life and how you approach things. For example, if you are a Sagittarius rising, Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, is your chart ruler. This means that you will generally tend to go through life with an optimistic, happy-go-lucky attitude, and any current Jupiter transits may be extra important for you! Getting a yearly horoscope done is a great way to see what may be coming up for you.
In fact, your Rising Sign is so important, it’s often recommended to read the horoscope for your Rising Sign either instead of or alongside your Sun (Star) Sign. This is because “Sun Sign Astrology” (the type that focusses on the Sign the Sun is in, i.e. newspaper horoscopes), are created on a Rising Sign chart. Because the Rising Sign is the first one on the left of a Zodiacal wheel and then all the other Signs follow suit in order, that is used as the starting base for creating horoscope predictions based on where the Planets currently fall in the Signs in the sky, and your corresponding Houses. You can read more about what each of the different houses represents in our post on The 12 Astrological Houses.
In Vedic (Eastern) Astrology, most predictions are formulated using the Rising Sign as the most important piece of the puzzle, along with the Moon Sign (where the moon is situated in your birth chart). In Tropical (Western) Astrology, your Rising Sign is said to be a part of your “Big 3” along with your Sun and Moon Sign.

Rising Signs in the Zodiac
To find out your Rising Sign, you will need your exact time of birth and location to get your birth chart, click here to make a free natal chart. Once you have your chart, the Sign on the left in the 1st House is your Rising Sign/Ascendant, on many charts it will simply be delineated with the letters Asc, or AC, and the symbol of the Zodiac Sign. The Ascendant Sign on the cusp of the first house changes every 2 hours, which is why it’s important to have an accurate birth time, ideally the one on your birth certificate, especially if you are near the first of last degrees of the Sign.
Here’s are the characteristics of Rising Signs in the Zodiac:
Aries, the first Sign of the Zodiac, is a bold Fire sign with a Cardinal “quality”, meaning it occurs at the beginning of a season. This makes it strong-willed, strong-headed, determined, and clear about what it wants in life and is not afraid to go and get it. Ruled by Mars, the Planet of War, Aries is a fierce trailblazer, confident in what it’s worth and what it deserves, boldly paving their way and standing up for the little guy along the way. Aries Rising will generally give off a fearless and independent air with an eagerness to get things started and can be highly opinionated.
Taurus is a Fixed Earth Sign, meaning it occurs in the middle of a season. This makes it practical, grounded, reliable, resilient, sensuous, pragmatic and determined. It is ruled by Venus, the beautiful Planet of Love, this highlights Taurus’ love of good quality things in life and indulgence in experiences, truly appreciating all that Mother Earth has to offer, including the little things. Taurus Rising will come across as down-to-earth, meticulous but perhaps a bit stubborn and slow to move, with a cautious, keen eye for a good investment and as skilled hard-workers.
Gemini is a Mutable Air Sign, occurring at the end of the season. This means that it is flexible and adaptable, highly open to change and persuadable by others, they are quick-witted, chatty and intellectual, constantly thinking (or over-thinking!) and skilled communicators. Ruled by Mercury, the Planet of Communication, Gemini is adept at moving between people with ease, able to connect with a wide variety of types. Gemini Rising will come across as bubbly and social, flirty and excitable, keen to make conversation and have a good, light-hearted fun time, open to trying new things and experiences full of curiosity for everything on offer.
Cancer is a Cardinal Water Sign. This makes it a soft but capable self-starter, extremely in touch with its feelings and intuition, may be prone to being over-emotional or moody at times, cares deeply about their loved ones and love nothing more than showing them how much they care. Ruled by the Moon, this makes them extra perceptive and sensitive, feeling all the feels and are expert carers, nurturers, and healers. Homebodies at heart, Cancer Rising will come across as gentle, kind, empathetic souls who perhaps love to cook, or nourish in any other way, the souls of those at their hearth. Because of this tenderness, they too have developed a tough outer shell like their crab counterpart, and may be a bit hesitant or mistrusting of others when they first meet, taking some time to let their guard down.
Leo is the bold and courageous Fixed Fire Sign. They burn bright with all their might, the lovers of the limelight and the stars of the show. Leos love to have a good time and make sure those around them do too, natural entertainers- fun, play, and joy are some of their top priorities in life. Highly creative and generous, Leo can come off as a bit self-centred but that’s only because they love themselves so much (as should we all!), and are generally known for their big lion-heart. Ruled by the Sun, the centre of the solar system and light of all life, this adds extra sparkle to Leo’s blaze, making them proud, confident, and larger-than-life. Leo Rising will appear to be the life of the party, with a fixed, determined mindset and a lover of grandiose gestures.
Virgo is a Mutable Earth Sign, making it grounded and earthy, but also flexible and adaptable. They have a keen, discerning eye and are highly analytical perfectionists, at times to a point of detriment (to theirselves and others). They are solid healers, spotting what’s just right at each moment, often known as the editors- nothing gets past their observant eye. Ruled by Mercury, its yin nighttime ruler, Virgo brings out the organisational side of this Planet. Virgo Risings will be known for their purposefulness and trustworthiness, with perhaps a love for nature and animals, and a practical, caring, detail-orientated temperament.
Libra is a Cardinal Air Sign all about balance and harmony within and without, and with each other. Highly receptive to others, Libra loves to be in partnership and is very easy-going, known as the diplomats of the Zodiac. They are intellectual initiators that appreciate the beauty and luxury in life, as well as the finer things. They have excellent taste and style and are always keen to get along with others, acting as the peace-makers, they are also known by the archetype of the lover. Also ruled by Venus, this brings out its appreciation for quality and indulgence, as well as their focus on relationships. Libra Rising will come across as charming, sweet, amicable, friendly, and socially pleasant, able to collaborate easily.
Scorpio is a Fixed Water Sign known for its intensity and mysteriousness. They are highly in touch with their emotions and inner depths, with an acute intuition and ability to get to the heart of a matter with ease. They’re not afraid of going in deep and love to explore the inner realms of themselves and others- nothing is taboo or off-limits to them, they embrace all of the human condition and are master transformers. Their ability to transmute is reflected in their multiple symbols- the scorpion is their base sign, the spiritual snake is their elevated sign after they have shed a layer, and the phoenix (or eagle) is their highest expression after they have emerged from their ashes completely transformed. Ruled by Mars traditionally and Pluto, the Planet of Power, in modern times, reflects their intensity, drive, ambition, and capacity for strength. Scorpio Rising may come across as fairly intense and magnetic, secretive and enigmatic, as well as loyal, honest, and profoundly healing.
Sagittarius is a Mutable Fire Sign known for their optimism, exuberance, bubbliness, energy and enthusiasm. They are excited to try out new things and go on adventures, love discussing on all manner of topics with people from all walks of life, especially if this can lead into spirituality and philosophy. Their good vibes are infectious and they’re highly imaginative and inventive. Ruled by Jupiter, the jolly giant Planet of luck, fortune, and expansion, Sagittarius grows that which it touches and loves to think big or go home. They have lived rich lives and have an opinion on everything, and aren’t afraid to share it! Not necessarily always outgoing, they have a general good-humoured tendency and can be quite inspiring for people to be around. Sagittarius Rising will come across as generous, knowledgeable, adaptable, fun, and bright, with a contagious zest for life.
Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth Sign, the most responsible of the Zodiac. They are concerned with grounded, earthly matters, duties, rules, regulations, order, hierarchy and structure. They are the taskmasters and known for their innate hard-working, determined, resilient natures. They have a good sense of what’s right and wrong, a moral compass that helps them accurately judge people, and can be quite career-orientated. They are ambitious but patient, always looking to the long road ahead and not interested in quick fixes or fast pleasures. Ruled by Saturn, the sometimes stern Planet that rules governments and organisations, is an indicator of Capricorn’s desire to build things that last. They want to make a real difference in the world, make a name for themselves, and aren’t afraid of how long that will take. Capricorn Rising will come across as methodical, sturdy, trustworthy, reliable, determined, and responsible.
Aquarius is a Fixed Air Sign, the eccentric of the Zodiac. They love to live on the fringes of society, immersing themselves in all the latest technological advancements and theories, they have quite an eclectic taste and are highly intellectual- and would like to be known as such! They are resilient and motivated, interested in a wide variety of topics and always looking to the bigger picture and greater collective. They are concerned with the welfare of the world and care deeply about others on a grand scale, even if they come across as a little detached from their emotions. They enjoy big friendship groups and flitting from one to another, curious to learn all that they can in this lifetime. Traditionally ruled by Saturn and Uranus in modern times, this quirky Planet emphasises their ability to dance to the beat of their own drum. An Aquarius Rising may come across as rather alternative, intelligent, humanitarian, enjoy being a part of company but also a loner, may sometimes live in extremes or make sudden, unexpected changes.
The last Sign of the Zodiac is Mutable Water Sign Pisces, said to encompass aspects of all the Zodiac Signs that have come before it, Pisces is fluid and boundary-less. They are highly perceptive and adaptive to change, able to absorb the energies of those around them, in touch with their intuition, dreams, emotions, and ethereal planes, Pisces is creative, sensitive, and perhaps feel like they don’t quite fit in or are not of this world. They have a deep connection with the subtle influences around them, and as such may also fluctuate and mutate, not liking to be tied down or labelled. They see things as the are- the world as it is and people as they are, and possess an inner acceptance and understanding. Traditionally ruled by Jupiter and Neptune in modern times, this Planet emphasises its dreamy, intuitive quality but also highlights its proneness to gullibility, getting blinded by illusions or tending towards escapism. Pisces Rising will come across as mystic, gentle, open, empathetic, creative, non-linear thinkers.

What Is My Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign?
You likely know what your zodiac sign is, right? Most of us do. Even if you’re not super into astrology and zodiac signs, you’ve probably looked up your horoscope at least once or twice because maybe you just needed someone to tell you where your life was heading. We’ve all been there, looking for some comforting words from the stars.
All of this being said, do you know your sun, moon, and rising sign?
The horoscope that you usually read online or in magazines is the sign that you are probably most familiar with.
That zodiac sign is actually your sun sign. This sign is calculated by looking up the time of year that you were born.
These three signs together help you to gain a better understanding of yourself, as each one rules over different parts of your personality.
Understanding each of these signs can give you a whole new perspective of astrology and if you’re a believer, your life.
Let’s take a look at what the sun, moon, and rising signs actually represent.
Your sun sign is what your daily, weekly, monthly, etc. horoscope is based on. It’s the most common sign that people look to when they want to know about themselves through astrology.
When you tell people your star sign (Pisces, Taurus, Libra, etc…), you are actually telling them your sun sign.
This sign is based on the position of the sun at the time you were born. To calculate this, all you need to know is the month and day you were born.
Are you not sure what your sun sign is? Take a look at the chart below.
This sun sign represents you! If you think about it, the sun is the center of our solar system and the Earth needs it to survive.
Just like the sun’s relation to Earth, our sun sign is also at the center of who we are.
Your moon sign relates more to the hidden aspects of your life, like your emotions, fears, and longings. If you think about the moon, it only comes out sometimes, and it’s more hidden – just like you are with your emotions.
The moon has always been connected with our emotions. You know how they say people start acting crazier when there’s a full moon?
Well, the moon affects the ocean tides and many researchers believe that since our body is mostly made up of water, the moon affects us in the same way. Astrologist Dr. Perrakis even states “it’s easy to understand how the moon would pull us and sway us just like the ocean.”
This sign is often believed to really show your true self on a deeper level. Since the moon moves into different stages every 2-3 days, people born 2-3 days apart can be totally different – even if they share the same sun sign.
Your moon sign is based on where exactly the moon was when you were born. To calculate your moon sign you’ll need to know the day and exact time you were born including the time zone.
Don’t know your moon sign? Find it here.
Your rising sign, or ascendant sign, is the zodiac constellation rising on the eastern horizon at the time you are born. This sign is your social personality and it represents your physical body and outward style. Think of it as the energies that you put into the world.
Whereas the sun sign represents your core self and the moon sign represents your inner self, the rising sign is all about how you present yourself.
“The ascendant (or rising sign) is often considered the mask one wears when meeting others,” says Café Astrology.
Unlike the sun sign, which shows the bigger picture of who you are, the rising sign shows the surface of your personality. Your rising sign is how you appear to other people, how you react, and how you socially relate to people.
To discover your rising sign, you need to know your exact birth date, time, and place, and you can find it by going here.

A week after the start of our studies, we were offered to join the student council. A senior student was presiding there. Her name was Tanya, she was already in her fifth year, she was going to graduate with honors. She was a typical "nerd", taller than me, dark hair gathered in a ponytail, glasses, a stern face.
