Municipal Residents should contact their municipality for holiday collection information. As a service to municipal residents, we have compiled a list of municipal contacts.

Excess Garbage Collection

SWA understands that there can be an increase of garbage around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and so it has allowed for residents to place excess garbage at the curb for pick up on the regular collection days that fall between November 26 and 29 and between December 26 and January 1. Residents should note that excess garbage placed outside of a standardized garbage cart must be properly secured in plastic bags (oversized or excess carboard boxes may also be placed beside the yellow recycle bin for collection). All debris should still be placed curbside by 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.

Garbage & Recycling

The Village contracts with Roy Strom for the curbside collection of household refuse, yard waste, and recyclable materials for all single-family attached and detached units. The Village's contract does not include multi-family, or commercial collection. Please Click Here to find a list of registered refuse haulers that provide this service.

Garbage, yard waste and recycling collection fees are included in the property's bi-monthly water bill. Refuse and recyclables is collected every Friday. Items may be placed at the curb and alleyways after 6:00pm on the day before the collection. There is no limit to the amount of refuse that may be disposed of at a single collection.

All household refuse must be contained in the Village issued 90 or 65 gallon containers. These containers are the property of Roy Strom and must stay with your property should you decide to move from the Village. Additional containers may be used as necessary along with your Village issued container. Lids are required for all refuse containers.

Recyclables are to be placed in the recycling container (blue lid). Please put items in loose. Bagged items will NOT be recycled.   Click here to see list of acceptable recyclables.

Large appliances (e.g. stoves, refrigerators, couches and mattresses) and construction material (e.g. wood, bricks, concrete, fencing, rocks, mud and clay, and shingles and gutters) will not be collected by Roy Strom during regular curbside collection. Special arrangements for these items may be made by contacting Roy Strom directly at 708-344-5000.

Yard waste tags are free of charge and are available at the Village Commons during normal business hours.

Collection Schedule & Calendar

Garbage / Bulk / Recycling Collection Schedule & Calendar

The City of Newport News collects household trash, bulk/brush debris, and recyclable material on a prescribed schedule. To determine your collection day, call 757-933-2311 or reference the web pages below.

Services Offered

Household trash
is placed in the green cart and rolled to the curb by residents where it is collected each week on a designated day of the week.

Bulk and brush debris are collected biweekly on the same day and week. Bulk and brush should be placed separately at the curb by residents where each is collected on alternate weeks on a designated day of the week. Brush debris is collected after bulk debris on the same day because brush is taken to a different facility to be ground and recycled.

Recyclable material is collected on alternate weeks for cart service and weekly for bin service. Recyclable material should be placed in the blue cart or blue bin at the curb by residents the designated day of the week

Determining Your Service Days

Designated collection days can be determined by finding the street name on the Garbage / Bulk / Recycling Collection Schedule (PDF) and then looking to the right of the street name to see collection days for Trash, Bulk Waste & Brush, and Recycling.

Household trash is collected every week on the designated day. Note that for bi-weekly Bulk Waste & Brush and Recycling a color (either red or yellow) is associated with the designated collection day. This color denotes the specific week of your bi-weekly collection, which can be found on this document: Solid Waste Collection Calendar 2021 (PDF). Most residents receive Bulk waste, Brush and Recycling collection on the same day but there are some streets where this is different. Please check the schedule for any variation. In the event of a City-observed holiday, collections will be postponed until the day after the holiday.

Please note: A PDF viewer is required to view and print a PDF document. If you do not have a PDF viewer installed on your computer, you may download Adobe Acrobat Reader free of charge.

Municipal Stormwater Management Plan
Spill Prevention Pollution Plan – Abridged
Stormwater Information

WHAT IS STORMWATER POLLUTION? (FROM CLEANWATERNJ.ORG)

Water from rain and melting snow that flows over lawns, parking lots and streets is known as stormwater runoff. This water, which travels along gutters, into catch basins and through storm drain pipes and ditches, usually is not treated, but then flows or is discharged into local waterbodies. Along the way, the stormwater picks up trash (fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, styrofoam cups, etc.) and toxins and other pollutants (gas, motor oil, antifreeze, fertilizers, pesticides and pet droppings). This polluted stormwater can kill fish and other wildlife, destroy wildlife habitat, contaminate drinking water sources and force the closing of beaches because of health threats to swimmers.

Human activity is largely responsible for the stormwater pollution. Everything that we put on the ground or into the storm drain can end up in our water. Each of us has a responsibility to make sure these contaminants stay out of our water. Whether we have clean water is up to you.
