How to connect your iPhone to a Samsung TV

If you live within the Apple ecosystem, streaming from an iPhone to an Apple TV seems obvious, but did you know that you can also stream content from your iPhone or iPad to a Samsung TV? Select Samsung televisions since 2018 have supported AirPlay 2, allowing you to share TV shows, movies, music, photos, and more to your Samsung television with the press of a button. Here’s how to connect your iPhone to a Samsung TV.

AirPlay 2 compatibility

Not all Samsung TVs support AirPlay 2, but as the years go by, more and more of Samsung’s offerings on the market support the feature out of the box. Samsung has been offering AirPlay 2 support on select TVs since 2018. Here’s a list of all TVs manufactured by Samsung that are compatible with AirPlay 2:

  • 2018: Smart Full HDTV N5300, 4K UHD TV, QLED 4K, Frame TV
  • 2019: Frame TV, Serif TV, 4K UHD TV, 8K, and 4K QLED TVs
  • 2020: Crystal UHD TVs, Premiere Projector, Frame TV, Serif TV, 8K and 4K QLED TVs

Connect iPhone via AirPlay 2

First, ensure that your Samsung TV is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. Follow these steps to play AirPlay content, and if you need assistance, we recommend visiting Samsung’s support website for more information on your particular TV model.

AirPlay (video and audio)

Step 1: On your iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner to open ControlCenter.

Step 2: Tap the ScreenMirroring button.

Step 3: Tap the SamsungTV option presented.

Step 4: If prompted, enter the code shown on your Samsung TV.

AirPlay (only audio)

Step 1: On your iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner to open ControlCenter.

Step 2: Tap on the NowPlaying widget.

Step 3: Tap on the AirPlay icon (a small circle with a triangle).

Step 4: Tap the SamsungTV option presented.

Step 5: If prompted, enter the code shown on your Samsung TV.

That’s it! If you have a Samsung TV with AirPlay 2, it’s that simple to connect and share your favorite content on the big screen. Otherwise, you may wish to follow the wired HDMI option presented below.

How to connect your iPhone to a Samsung TV

Adjusting AirPlay settings

If you want to fine-tune your AirPlay 2 experience on your Samsung TV, head over to the Settings menu on your TV, select General, and then Apple AirPlay Settings. Within this menu, you can turn AirPlay on or off, as well as choose if a connection requires entering a code for increased security. Lastly, if you need assistive services, such as subtitles or captioning, you can choose whether these settings are enabled by default and adjust their overall appearance.

Connecting iPhone via HDMI

If your Samsung Television doesn’t support AirPlay 2, you can still get your iPhone up on the big screen, but you’ll need an HDMI cable, as well as a Lightning to HDMI adapter. Apple sells such an adapter through its official store, but you can find much less expensive options that work just as well on Amazon. Once you have obtained the HDMI cable and need an adapter, you can plug your iPhone into your TV just as you would any other device.

A note on third-party apps

Another option for connecting your iPhone to your TV that you may hear about is to use a third-party app, such as Airbeam’s Mirror for Samsung TV. We could not find any third-party apps that operated without consequence, such as lag or stutter in our testing. We don’t necessarily recommend this path, but if you have a Samsung Smart TV that doesn’t support AirPlay 2, one of these apps may work, but understand that your experience may vary.

How to Connect an iPhone to a Samsung TV

What to Know

  • Easiest way to connect: Open AirPlay on your iPhone, open the content app you want and tap the Airplay icon.
  • Another way: Link your iPhone to your Samsung TV with a Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable.
  • Or, try an app with mirroring capabilities, such as the Samsung SmartView app.

This article explains how to connect your iPhone to a TV so you can play or share content from the phone to the TV using screen mirroring. Methods include using AirPlay, linking your phone and TV with a digital AV adapter, or using a mirroring app.

Use Airplay to Connect an iPhone to a Samsung TV

You can connect your iPhone to Samsung TVs that support Airplay 2, including models from 2018 and later.

How to Use AirPlay Mirroring

  1. Make sure that both the iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi connection.

  2. Check that you've enabled Airplay on your iPhone.

  3. Open the app from which you want to stream.

  4. Tap the Airplay icon.

In some apps, such as Photos, you need to press the share button first.

Use a Lightning Digital AV Adapter to Screen Mirror

This is one of the easier options, but you will need to buy or acquire a specific adapter from Apple for it to work. The Lightning Digital AV Adapter can be found for around $49.00 and works with most iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. You will need to have an extra HDMI cable ready to use, as it will be used to physically link your iPhone to your Samsung TV.

  1. Connect the AV Adapter to your iPhone.

  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the AV Adapter. You will see the port on the adapter where the HDMI cable needs to be plugged into.

  3. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the Samsung TV.

  4. Set the source on the Samsung TV to the input you connected the HDMI cable to. You should now see your iPhone’s screen mirrored on your Samsung TV.

Use Samsung Apps to Connect

If you would prefer a wireless solution for connecting your iPhone to your Samsung Smart TV, there are a few apps that can help.

When using any of these apps for screen mirroring, the Smart TV and the iPhone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The apps will not function if your phone and TV are on different networks.

Samsung SmartView App

The Samsung SmartView app is a free app you can install on your phone that will allow screen mirroring to your smart TV. Here's how:

  1. Make sure that both the iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi connection.

  2. Launch the Samsung SmartView app. It will ask you to enter the code that appears on your Samsung Smart TV screen.

  3. Enter the pin, and the device should automatically connect to your TV.

Mirror for Samsung TV

If you don’t like the performance of the SmartView app, you can try the Mirror app for Samsung TV. This $4.99 app gives you a bit more freedom with what you can mirror onto your Samsung TV.

  1. Once your phone and TV are on the same network, the Mirror app will ask you to select your television. Select the correct TV from the menu.

  2. Select Mirror Samsung TV > Start Broadcast. Your iPhone's screen is then mirrored onto your Samsung Smart TV, showing how long you have been mirroring the screen.

  3. When you'd like to stop mirroring, go back to the app, and select Stop Broadcast.

Other Apps With Mirroring Capabilities

There are some apps like YouTube that have their own way of mirroring the iPhone screen to your TV. Then you can watch your favorite YouTube videos right on your TV instead of the small screen on your phone.

How to screen mirror from your iPhone to a Samsung TV in 2 different ways

  • You can screen mirror, or AirPlay, content from your iPhone to your Samsung TV.
  • Most Samsung TV models from 2018 or later are compatible with the current version of AirPlay called AirPlay 2.
  • If your Samsung TV isn't AirPlay 2-compatible, or if you'd prefer a wired connection, you can still use a lightning-to-HDMI adapter to mirror your screen.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

Screen mirroring is a common feature on most new technology that allows you to cast content from the screen of one device to the screen of another. Screen mirroring goes by many different names, but on Apple devices, it's called AirPlay.

Though AirPlay is an Apple feature, since the advent of AirPlay 2 in 2018, it has become much easier to connect across device ecosystems. If you have a Samsung Smart TV made in 2018 or later, you will most likely be able to use AirPlay — see if your model is on this list to be sure.

There are two ways to access AirPlay on your iPhone — you can either select "Screen Mirroring" from the Control Center to mirror your entire iPhone screen, or you can select the AirPlay icon from within some apps to cast content from your iPhone to your TV. Alternatively, you can connect your iPhone to your Samsung TV with an HDMI cable to achieve the same effect. Here's how to do it all.

How to turn on AirPlay on a Samsung TV

Before you can use screen mirroring or AirPlay, you need to first make sure the feature is enabled on your Samsung TV.

1. Using your TV remote, go to "Settings" and select "General."

2. Choose "Apple AirPlay Settings" from the menu.

3. Select "AirPlay" and turn it to "On."

How to screen mirror an iPhone to a Samsung TV using AirPlay 2

Quick tip: Before you begin, make sure your iPhone and Samsung TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

How to mirror your entire iPhone screen from the Control Center

1. Swipe down from the top-right of your iPhone's screen to bring up the Control Center. For older iPhone models with a home button, the Control Center is accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

2. Tap "Screen Mirroring" beside an icon of two overlapping rectangles.

3. Select your Samsung TV from the list of available devices.

4. If a passcode appears on your Samsung TV, enter it into the pop-up on your iPhone.

5. Your entire iPhone screen should then begin mirroring onto your Samsung TV. When you play a video on your iPhone, your TV should automatically format it to full-screen.

How to AirPlay content from within apps

If you'd rather not mirror your entire phone's screen to your TV, some major media services like Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Hulu have an AirPlay button directly in their apps. Unfortunately, Netflix no longer includes the in-app AirPlay option.

Some built-in iPhone apps like the Photos app have the AirPlay option as well, located in the "Share" menu.

1. Once you've made sure your phone and your TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, open the app and select the media you want to play.

2. Find the AirPlay button — a rectangle with a triangle beneath it, usually near the top-right or top left corner of the screen — and tap it. If you're trying to AirPlay from the Photos app, tap the "Share" button, then select "AirPlay."

3. Choose the name of your Samsung TV from the list of available devices.

4. If a passcode appears on your Samsung TV, enter it into the pop-up on your iPhone.

5. Your photo or video should then begin mirroring onto your Samsung TV.

How to screen mirror an iPhone to Samsung TV with an HDMI cord and Lightning Digital AV adapter

If you find it easier to use a wired connection, or if your devices aren't AirPlay-compatible, you can use an HDMI cable and a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter.

A Lightning-to-HDMI adapter is a dongle that attaches your iPhone to an HDMI cable, which connects to your TV. The adapter costs around $40 on Amazon, and you'll also need to buy an HDMI cable if you don't have one already.

1. Connect the Lightning end of the cable to your iPhone.

2. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the other end of the adapter.

3. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to your Samsung TV.

4. Switch the input of the television to the corresponding HDMI channel.

5. Begin playing the desired media on your phone to see it on your TV.

How to change AirPlay settings on your Samsung TV

1. Using your TV remote, go to "Settings" and select "General."

2. Choose "Apple AirPlay Settings" from the menu.

3. From here, choose one or more of the following options to make adjustments:

  • AirPlay: This allows you to turn your TV's AirPlay feature on, which only needs to be done the first time you use AirPlay. You can also turn AirPlay off.
  • Subtitles and Captioning: This setting not only allows you to turn subtitles for your selected media on and off, it also lets you change the size, font, and color of the subtitles.
  • About AirPlay: Open this menu if you want to make sure you're running the latest version of AirPlay, or to find information about your current software.
  • Require Code: When you first start using AirPlay, anybody on your Wi-Fi network with a compatible device can connect and mirror to your TV. If you want to prevent this for any reason, you can use this setting to create a passcode users need to enter before they can project anything to your TV.
