⚠️This feature is only available on The Works plan or higher. ⚠️The Gusto integration currently only supports one Company Code per 7shifts account.

For more information please contact support at  [email protected].

Enabling the Gusto Payroll Integration

To enable the integration, you'll need to do the following:

1. Hover over to the 'More' menu > Integrations then click on 'Add Integration.'

  2. Search and select Gusto, then click 'Next.'

  3. Click on 'Login to Gusto.'

4. You will be taken to the Gusto login page. Enter your Gusto credentials and click 'Authorize.'

5. You will be redirected back to the 7shifts login screen. Enter your 7shifts credentials.

6. Under 'More' menu > Integrations > Gusto, click on 'Settings.'

7. If you have multiple locations in 7shifts, and they don't all use Gusto you can select the ones you want to connect. Use the dropdown menus to specify, then click 'Save.'

8. Your Gusto account is now successfully connected, but before you can start running payroll you'll need to map your Employees. This is how you will be able to match your Employees in 7shifts to their counterparts in Gusto, allowing the data to sync properly.

Click on the 'Payroll Mapping' tab and then 'Map Employees' to access the mapping page.

  • For unmatched Employees, you can either find a match or choose to ignore them if you won't need to sync timesheets for that Employee.
  • Please review all matched Employees before clicking 'Save'.
⚠️Remember: each time you add a new employee to 7shifts or Gusto, you'll need to ensure that they are properly mapped. Click here to learn more about mapping Employees.

Preparing your Payroll Data

Before you can send your payroll data to Gusto, you'll need to ensure that you've properly approved all punches and closed your timesheet.

1. Click the 'Time Clocking' icon at the top of the screen, then select the appropriate Pay Period.

2. From there, review and 'Approve' or 'Modify' any and all punches, or choose to 'Approve All.'

3. Once you've approved all punches, you're ready to close the Timesheet.

To close the Timesheet, select 'Close Timesheet' in the top right corner.

4. Once the Timesheet is closed you can send it to Gusto by clicking Export > Gusto.

7shifts will send regular hours, OT hours, and double OT hours directly to Gusto.

⚠️Hours will be reported for each employee, but hours are NOT separated by Roles.

Including Paid Time Off (PTO)

To include Employees' Paid Time Off, Paid Sick Time Off, and Unpaid Time Off hours within the report, you will need to enable these features under your Company Settings.

Click here to learn more about enabling Paid Time Off (PTO).

Including Tips

Accounts using a supported POS integration will be able to send their tip data to 7shifts. From there, this information can be included with your time clocking data when processing payroll.

Click here to learn more about syncing your tip data to payroll.

Please review carefully to see if your POS or tip source is compatible with your payroll provider.

Gusto vs Zenefits: Which Is Best for Your Business?

Gusto and Zenefits are both cloud-based HR software that manage employee data, run payroll, and provide employer-sponsored benefits. Gusto includes payroll in its base plans, while Zenefits offers it as a paid add-on. However, Zenefits’ additional HR options (like performance and compensation management) are helpful if you want to appeal to top-tier talent plus have the resources to devote toward using the tools to manage employee growth and development. Meanwhile, Gusto is great if you need a solid solution just for running payroll for a small business (<100 employees) and complying with basic payroll regulations.

When to Choose Gusto vs Zenefits

There are instances that neither Gusto nor Zenefits is the best option. If you’re looking for a more personalized service that can handle your HR and payroll needs (or think you may want to transition to one in the future), consider partnering with Rippling. It will serve as a co-employer, advise you on compliance issues, including what needs to go in your policies, and give you access to competitive benefit rates that neither Gusto nor Zenefits can offer. Rippling is great for businesses with plans to grow in the future that want the option to easily turn their PEO off and still have access to the HR and payroll software they’re familiar with.

Gusto vs Zenefits Overview

If you want more information about which options to look for when choosing a payroll service, check our guide on finding the right payroll service for your business. If you’ve already made your decision and need to end the relationship with your current provider, read our how to switch payroll solutions guide to help you manage the transition better.

Common Features That Gusto and Zenefits Both Have

  • Automatic payroll tax calculations, payments, and filings
  • Time tracking
  • Multiple pay rates and schedules
  • Tip reporting
  • Garnishments support
  • New hire reporting
  • Paid-time-off (PTO) requests and approvals
  • Document management and electronic signatures
  • Onboarding tools and digital offer letters
  • Employee surveys
  • Employee self-service

Gusto Pros and Cons

Zenefits Pros and Cons

Still unsure whether Gusto or Zenefits is a good fit? See how both providers compare with our top recommended HR software for small businesses.

Pricing: Gusto Wins

For companies with fewer than 100 employees, Gusto provides the best value, as you’ll receive HR functions, an employee database, payroll processing, and benefits administration for a reasonable price (monthly fees start at $39 plus $6 per employee). Zenefits does not charge a monthly base fee, but its per-employee pricing is more expensive than Gusto’s and its minimum five employee requirement and extra cost for payroll also play a part.

Let’s calculate: If you need to process the payroll of three employees, subscribing to Zenefits’s basic Essentials plan ($10 per employee monthly) with a payroll add-on ($6 per employee monthly) will cost you $80 per month (remember, there’s a 5-employee minimum, so you’ll be charged even if you don’t have the minimum employees). With Gusto, you only have to pay $57 monthly for three employees.

However, if you only want basic HR, time tracking, and scheduling, then consider Zenefits since its Essentials plan has all of these features and is affordably priced. In case your business is growing fast past 100 employees and you want an HR tool that includes compensation and performance management, Zenefits is a good option and may save you from having to upgrade or purchase additional software later (Gusto doesn’t have these features).

Gusto Pricing

  • Core plan: $39 plus $6 per employee monthly
    • Includes full-service payroll, unlimited and automatic pay runs, payroll tax filings, two- and four-day direct deposits, employee benefits, reporting, and onboarding tools
  • Complete tier: $39 plus $12 per employee monthly
    • Has all of Core’s features plus next-day direct deposits, time tracking, PTO management, employee surveys, permissions, and an employee directory
  • Concierge option: $149 plus $12 per employee monthly
    • Includes all of the Complete tier’s features plus access to certified HR experts
  • Contractor-only plan: $6 per contractor monthly
  • Add-ons:
    • 401(k) plans: Starts at $49 per month plus $8 per participating employee
    • College savings: $6 per participant monthly with an $18 monthly minimum
    • Commuter benefits: $4 per participant monthly with a $20 monthly minimum
    • HSA: $2.50 per participant monthly
    • FSA: $4 per participant monthly
    • Health reimbursement: $15 per employee monthly
    • Health insurance: Custom priced (pay only for premiums)

Zenefits Pricing*

  • Essentials plan: $10 per employee monthly
    • Includes core HR, time tracking, scheduling, document management, onboarding, PTO tracking, reporting, and employee information management tools
  • Growth tier: $18 per employee monthly
    • Comes with compensation and performance management in addition to all of the Essentials plan’s features
  • Zen option: $27 per employee monthly
    • Has all the tools included in Growth plus employee engagement surveys and a “People Hub” that contains collaboration tools and a company feed
  • Contractor-only plan: $6 per contractor monthly
  • Add-ons:
    • Payroll: $6 per employee monthly
    • HR advisory services: $10 per employee monthly
    • Benefits administration using own broker: $5 per employee monthly

*All Zenefits plans and add-ons require a minimum of five employees. The provider also offers discounted pricing for annual subscriptions (billed in a lump sum).

Payroll Features: Gusto Wins

Payroll is the feature where Gusto really shines. In addition to unlimited and automatic pay runs, Gusto can manage payroll in all 50 states and includes automatic tax filings and year-end W-2/1099 reporting in its payroll services. While Zenefits has pay processing tools that are similar to Gusto’s, its payroll module is a paid add-on. Zenefits also doesn’t let you pay employees through pay cards as Gusto does, nor does it have on-demand pay that allows employees to access their paychecks before payday.

HR Features: Zenefits Wins

Although Gusto and Zenefits have similar HR features, Zenefits is a better choice, especially if you need time tracking and scheduling. It includes the two features in all of its plans; Gusto only offers time tracking in its higher tiers and it lacks employee scheduling capabilities. You can, however, opt to integrate Gusto with Homebase, which lets you create schedules and track employee attendance for free.

Another reason why Zenefits offers better HR tools than Gusto is because of its extensive health benefits coverage (covers all states versus Gusto’s 39 states). In addition, only Zenefits offers HR-centric tools, like performance management and compensation planning.

Reporting Tools: Tie

Both Gusto and Zenefits have efficient reporting capabilities that include a set of standard reports and customization options that even allow you to create new ones directly from their systems. You can run basic reports with details about each employee and create your own using special fields or parameters.

Ease of Use: Gusto Wins

Gusto and Zenefits both have intuitive interfaces with online tools that are easy to learn and use. They also have how-to guides and FAQ resources that you can access online. Where Gusto wins in this criteria is through its robust integration options with more than 100 solutions (Zenefits has only 40+ integration partners) and in that it offers email, chat, and phone support.

Upgrading to Gusto’s Concierge’s option even comes with an exclusive number to contact if you have questions or require assistance accessing its features. Zenefits doesn’t offer a dedicated phone line to contact support for its Zen plan subscribers, plus you have a schedule a call back from its customer team through the Zenefits dashboard.

What Users Say About Gusto and Zenefits

While Gusto and Zenefits both scored an average rating of 4 or higher in third-party review sites like G2 and Capterra, Gusto’s score is higher compared to Zenefits (4.5 versus 4) as of this writing. Reviewers like how user-friendly and intuitive both software are. The common complaint that both Gusto and Zenefits received is the slow response times of their support teams, wherein many complained most about Zenefits’s poor customer service.

At the time of publication, the two providers earned the following scores on popular user review sites:

How We Evaluated Gusto vs Zenefits

We evaluated Gusto vs Zenefits using a 5-star scale with six criteria that include payroll and HR functionalities in addition to pricing, ease of use, and reporting tools. We also considered user reviews from third-party sites like G2 and Capterra.

In our evaluation, Gusto scored higher with an overall rating of 4.66 out of 5, whereas Zenefits earned a 4.19 out of 5. To view our full evaluation criteria, click through the tabs in the box below.

25% of Overall Score

Software with transparent pricing, multiple plan options, unlimited pay runs, and zero setup fees were rated favorably. Those that offer a plan that costs less than $50 per employee monthly were also given extra points. Both Gusto and Zenefits met all of our requirements for this category, but the former is more affordable (costing $39 plus $6 per employee monthly). Plus, you don’t have to pay extra for payroll like Zenefits.

25% of Overall Score

Automatic payroll runs, payroll tax filing, 1099 form preparation, multiple pay options, and two-day direct deposits are just some of the features that we looked for. Providers also got points if they offer both employee and contractor payroll services, including a penalty-free guarantee. While both Gusto and Zenefits have efficient pay processing tools, Gusto scored the highest here because it offers multiple payment options—from direct deposits and manual paychecks to pay cards. Zenefits only supports paycheck and direct deposit payments.

25% of Overall Score

Aside from having a user-friendly, intuitive, and customizable platform, payroll software that integrates with common third-party systems (like QuickBooks, Homebase, and TSheets) are awarded extra points. We also prioritized providers that offer quick problem resolutions and live phone support. Gusto, again, posted high scores here given its wide selection of third-party software integrations and multiple customer support options that include live phone support (Zenefits doesn’t offer this).

10% of Overall Score

Having access to a professional who can provide expert advice on compliance issues is one of the criteria we looked for, including new hire state reporting and time tracking. Following closely behind these is the capability to provide online onboarding and employee benefits (like health insurance and workers’ compensation) that are available in all 50 states. Zenefits posted higher marks here because its time tracking solution is already included in its base plan and the medical insurance options via its partner broker cover 49 states. With Gusto, you have to upgrade to at least its Complete tier to get time tracking and its health insurance options are available only in 39 states as of this writing.

10% of Overall Score

We looked at reviews that users left on popular third-party sites like G2 and Capterra. Providers with an average score of 4+ stars and 1,000+ reviews is ideal. Gusto received a perfect score in this criteria; its average user rating and the number of online reviews are above 4 stars and 1,000, respectively.

5% of Overall Score

In addition to having basic payroll reports, providers with customizable reporting and allow new ones to be built within their payroll systems are rated favorably. Gusto and Zenefits met all of the requirements for this criteria, both scoring 5 out of 5.

*Percentages of overall score

Bottom Line

Gusto and Zenefits are both solid small business software products that can provide HR, payroll, and employee benefits in a self-service, cloud-based software. Zenefits is a good choice if you’re looking for an HRIS option that can grow with your business. But if you want an affordable way to pay employees while providing your workers with full benefits, onboarding tools, and basic time tracking, Gusto is the HR and payroll software we recommend.

I'm a *very* happy Gusto customer

I'm a *very* happy Gusto customer. They enabled me, as a founder / CEO, to spend almost no time at all on HR and to focus instead on recruiting and my business. For a high-growth startup with mostly US-based employees, Gusto is an amazing fit. Great customer support and product experience.

This company is on the verge of total…

This company is on the verge of total collapse. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sign up with Gusto. A once promising payroll and benefits provider has apparently run out of money and leadership. I've been a customer for 4 years and now the platform is crumbling. Broken website and dashboards, outsourced customer support, unresolved issues and straight up lies from people masquerading as internal support.

If I could give them a zero I would - avoid like the plague

If I could give them a zero I would.

They use a separate portal for managing your claim records on your FSA as the gusto login. This means if you've got problems with your FSA (you know...the account that you put *your* money into to simplify your out of pocket you don't have deal with a bunch of administrative crap...) you have re-register with the claims administrator because Gusto apparently has yet to discover single-sign-on. The trick here is if you have to do this, they setup a bunch of conditions for registration which, apparently, nobody has access to except Gusto. Who a) don't answer phones and b) take *days* to respond to emails. Bottom line; Gusto takes your money, declines your claims, then doesn't enable you to easily or quickly determine what the basis of the declined claim was. So now you have to pay - out of your own pocket - for expenses that you nominally have already set aside money for but which you cannot access. Because Gusto won't allow you to access the portal to fix the mess. If this happened anywhere else, it would be called FRAUD and they would be in jail..

Gusto is exactly what you would expect from a company with pig for it's logo. Except that's kind of an insult to pigs...

Avoid Gusto if you need anything other…

Avoid Gusto if you need anything other than a basic payroll system. The very basic part of payroll with no complicated pay/deductions seems to work. It does not, however, allow for anything other than very simple pay structures.

Their benefits department is horrible and their customer service is pretty much nonexistent.

A couple of example:
*For the Health Savings Account, I signed up at the end of April for a start date of July 1, 2021. I received the card, but not the online account access. I emailed them in May 2021 and was told it would happen by July 1. It didn't and no deductions came out. It took multiple emails and very long phone calls, to finally start the deductions at the end of September. And the amounts being deducted are wrong and don't even match what's displayed as the election on their own site.

*The response times are terrible. One email sent on 7/23 wasn't responded to until 9/1.

*A month after starting the vision coverage, when employees went to use it, the doctors offices were told they didn't have coverage and staff were forced to pay out of pocket.

* HSA on terminated staff. A staff member with an HSA left. After being terminated in Gusto, Gusto shut off the person's access to their funds. Two weeks later, she tried to use the debit card and was unable to. Gusto Support's response (after over an hour on hold) was that Gusto shuts off access and will, somewhere in the undetermined future send the termed employees instructions on how to access their money.

Please avoid their benefits at all costs.

EDIT: Gusto also sent an incorrect 941 to the IRS that has caused a great deal of trouble trying to get corrected. Please do not use.

Don't use them for anything you need support on

I started with Gusto because I needed a payroll servicer for my company. Interface for employees is nice, up to date, etc.

Interface for administrator is ok. Not bad, not great.

About a year into things, I started a SEP plan. Gusto handled that fine. Then bonus season came....and the bonuses I paid employees had no SEP plan line item (which is against the law) and that needed to be corrected ASAP.

I bet I contacted GUSTO 6 or 8 times through email and phone. Most frustrating was 1) getting a different person each time and 2) having to re-explain everything (do they even have a CRM??) and then being told that they'd look into it.

It took 7 weeks to fix. It reminded me of Comcast.

Next issue: Gusto solicited me for health insurance for my company. I responded with questions and requests for quotes...and in response all I got were auto-respond emails devoid of information.

So, I went online, and called the number on Gusto's site. The line gave me business hours and nothing else (and yes, it was during the biz hours). It simply repeated that response.

So, I clicked "request a callback" and they called in like 10 minutes. I explained that 1) Gusto solicited me for health ins for my company and 2) yes, I wanted to move forward with that, buy insurance, and that I had questions and wanted quotes.

The gal put me on hold for 5 minutes, came back and said nobody was available and that I should email them. I explained that I have already emailed several times and I simply get in these auto respond loops. I asked if someone could call me, she didn't think that was possible.

My assumption: They are growing too fast and they don't have the support for simple things like payroll deduction issues......and they absolutely don't have the support for more complicated things like Section 125s, healthcare deduction debiting, healthcare plan quotes, etc.

So- I'd stay away from this group until they get things together by hiring more people. If certain benefit issues go awry, I'm up against ERISA law .... and I cannot afford to be outside the law with ERISA simply because Gusto cannot manage to staff their support lines.

Terrible service provider

Terrible service provider. No customer support. The review takes 3 pay periods. When they finally review the request they ask you to resubmit the documents and then that goes through another 3 pay periods for review. This is a constant loop and the money is never reimbursed. Customer support will wait weeks to get back to you. The whole thing is a scam. Talking with our CEO about moving providers as my employees have had a bad experience.

QSEHRA is useless

Our company set up a healthcare reimbursement program this summer and none of our employees are able to get a submission through. They sit in an “under review” queue for weeks and suddenly they have a “need more information” status. Endless loop of frustration and no customer service. Emails go unanswered, chat waits are 60 minutes if chat is even available. No number to call. I’m encouraging our HR person to switch providers.

My employer has switched to Gusto w/out looking into them much. The healthcare they offer w/ Kaiser is a total scam! I thought I had to enroll, so I started looking into what tier to pick. However, I saw the deductable, so I decided I couldn't afford it. My application was left incomplete, but they pulled it through anyways. They put me on their insurance & I have been fighting w/ them to get me off & give me back my money, with no luck. Even though I have been told it has been canceled, and I will get my money back. I am still getting money taken from my check! Now Medicaid will not cover my prescriptions or procedures that were lined up. Molina is more than likely going to charge me for the last two months that they think I've had Kaiser. I cannot seem to get any type of manager. Now my boss is trying to cancel the health part cuz he can't afford their prices but is having issues as well! How are these guys still open and conducting business!?

Benefits customer support non-existent

As most of these reviews note, I'd had a positive experience using Gusto (through my employer) to manage my benefits in the past. However, for the last couple of weeks, I've been trying unsuccessfully to simply unenroll in benefits coverage through COBRA. They ask that you email their benefits team and the request will be taken care of in 3-5 business days. Fair enough. Now 2 weeks later, and after hours of waiting on hold and many false assurances that I will be contacted, I still haven't had confirmation that this is complete, and I may be billed again next month for health care I won't use. It's completely unacceptable to have such poor customer service when people's payroll and benefits (and real $$) are on the line! Absolutely no accountability. I will not be using Gusto again.

Useless customer service

They are not present even in the hours when they are supposed to be open for calls or chats. It s already a week and they did not even open a ticket after many emails I sent. When I got to talk to them in the last year they were unable to help . The website has some bugs and now I am stuck because of one issue and I cannot communicate to anyone! Need to change provider !

Gusto messed up 1099's and W-2's for 3…

Gusto messed up 1099's and W-2's for 3 employees. They redid them THREE TIMES because Gusto kept adding in amounts that had NOTHING to do with our company. I contacted over 9 times and had "Aaron" who was supposed to be a supervisor working on it but he claims he does not understand what we are looking for. Fix the reports! Contact the IRS regarding YOUR MISTAKE. THE WORST PAYROLL EXPERIENCE EVER! I've been dealing with them with this for over 9 months! I have opened up trouble tickets and sent int he IRS letters because none of their stuff matches. It is like Gusto is purposely just being hostile. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE! Even contacted them on FB four times and still nothing done!

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service, takes forever to get a reply, the phone line does not work even with the code, and emails do unanswered for days. It is an endless loop to actually get assistance.

Even worse the stated turnaround times on approving reimbursements is outrageous, 15-business days, and 1-3 pay cycles. Which actually took 20 plus business days, so not even up to the standard they set. Completely incompetent and unacceptable....Gusto is more focused on making money rather than providing timely service to customers.

Gusto has gone downhill fast.

Until recently, Gusto has been a great service provider. But now, we wait on hold for 45-60 minutes, only to speak with people who can’t answer questions or hang up. Definitely in the market for a new payroll processor.

TERRIBLE Customer Service

I have been with Gusto for 4 years. They used to be attentive, timely and super helpful. Over the last year, their customer service has been AWFUL. I can't get anyone to answer concerns let alone write back to a support ticket submission. I have had random tax amounts taken out of my payroll without prior notice from Gusto benefits team. It just seems like they have given up on offering service.

What a Disappointment!

I join Gusto about a month ago and at first was very please with the assistance I received in setting everything up. I wanted to add Healthcare and was told to fill out a for, I did so, waited about a week and never received a response. When I emailed them back I was then advised that Alaska and Hawaii were not offered these services. I think the sales person should have known this and could have sent me some information regarding it before hand. Then big day arrives to run my first payroll. Now remember I am a sole proprietorship. Well they charge me twice for social security and medicare. When I brought it to their attention they were not interested in fixing the glitch in their software but preferred the easy out and stated oh maybe we are not the right fit. So sad. The easy out is not always the best solution.

Customer service has become virtually…

Customer service has become virtually non-existent. It was amazing when we first started with Gusto several years ago, but requests regularly take 3 weeks to be responded to (if at all.) Employees are not getting their benefits on time and it's causing morale and maybe even ultimately employee retention problems if we don't fix something. I suspect we'll have to be moving to another provider soon.

Incompetent or Fraudulent!!! Either way stay away.

Payroll taxes were taken by them but not paid to the IRS. Tried to get someone to help us at Gusto but they say someone will get back to us and won't provide names or phone numbers. They are horrible. Moving to another payroll system. This company should be barred from filing other peoples taxes. STAY AWAY from this company, you have been warned.

Great until you have issues

I started a new job that uses gusto to pay me and I can tell you that gusto alone has made me think more than once about leaving this job. They do not take out the appropriate amount of taxes. You’ll find reviews all over the internet about them forgetting to take taxes out at all from some people’s paychecks. I do not understand how their customer service can just keep sending the same response over and over without escalating it to a tax person as I have requested for the last two-three months. Their customer service representatives, especially Annebelle, do not have the tax knowledge and it has become such a hassle. While all of them have been pleasant enough, this needs to get sorted. This needs to get fixed by the end of the year, but I cannot get around the first level of customer service representatives who have little to no knowledge on even their own platform let alone tax withholdings.

Update: Annabelle, a customer service representative who has refused to pass me on to a tax expert has claimed that their tax team is not customer facing at the moment.

Small business run for the hills. That is not what other customer service representatives have been saying and that is horrible business practice.

I have reported this company to the BBB and I suggest those of you that have written all these 1 star reviews for the past year do the same.

Expect Zero customer service

I have been frustrated by the one way communication with Gusto . I called the IRS myself as i got a certified mail saying they are threatening to put a levy on my property because they believe I have unpaid taxes for period ending in Dec 2020. for Form 944. all i am asking if for Gusto to file a 944-X to correct the issue.
This issue has been needing to be resolved since I had contacted GUSTO in June of 2021.
We are now in September 2021, 3 months latter and this has not been resolved. Im on the hook and responsible for this , but they filed my tax filing incorrectly. The IRS has my payment all on the wrong form that Gusto filed. I wish I can correct it myself, but not sure how to do it, the IRS recommend that I ask Gusto to help do it , but I can't get anyone to talk to me at Gusto. All I get is these email that say "I'm in Good hands. “ and that’s the end of that story.
I will be moving my business to a realistic payroll company that really know how to help me. Instead of focusing on business, I waste a lot of time on this, it is so frustrating. Form 941 was suppose to be the correct form that my payment should be filled on the 1st place. I will have to finds a new company to process my payroll going forward with quicker customer service.
