Free and low cost swim lesson options this summer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- 10 people day every day from drowning, and 20% of those are children under the age of 14. As the weather warms up and summer draws closer, one nonprofit is urging everyone in the Lowcountry to learn how to swim.

Shannon O’Brien, the founder of LAPS, says, “It is the one sport that could save your life.”

Whether it’s a swimming pool, a pond, a river, or the ocean, the Charleston area is surrounded by bodies of water. This makes it vital for children to learn how to swim.

O’Brien says, “They have to learn how to swim, it’s just a must.”

So, the Lowcountry Aquatic Project Swimming (LAPS) program was born. They teach Kindergarten and 1st graders in Title 1 schools across Charleston County how to swim during the school day for free.

O’Brien says, “Some of them have never been in a pool before, so it’s very, very new.”

According to the USA Swimming Foundation, close to 80% of children in low income households do not know how to swim.

O’Brien says, “I think the root of the issue is access and that’s why we have the children during school because we can bus them back and forth. As well as parents just don’t have discretionary funds to take children to swimming lessons.”

In the city of Charleston, free swim lessons are offered for all ages at the MLK pool (155 Jackson Street) and the Herbert Hasell Pool (265 Fishburne Street). These lessons will run Monday through Thursday starting June 4th at noon. They are first come, first served and you do not need to register in advance.

The city of Charleston says if these lessons are not convenient for you, but you can not afford to pay for swim lessons, call the Charleston Recreation Department at (843) 724-7327 and ask for financial assistance paperwork for help paying for lessons at a different time.

In North Charleston, an 8 lesson swim course is available to residents of the city for $30, this breaks down to less than $4 per class. These classes are available at the Danny Jones (144 Monitor Street), Felix Pinckney (4790 Hassell Street) and Northwoods (8348 Greenridge Road) pools. You can register here.
