Fierce Abercrombie & Fitch 2002 Cologne
Summer 2006 - My first visit to New York City. I was 18, a student, and the world was mine.
I was on the road in the streets of New York with exactly this attitude. Besides a lot of museums, a visit to the UNO (I was a student with the university in NY at that time) and all the other Touri stuff, a visit to the Abercrombie Flagstore on 5th Avenue was inevitable, I would have heard so much about this shop, my expectations were accordingly high.
If you have ever visited NY in summer, you know what it smells like on the streets: the rumours are just a bunch of exhaust fumes, sweat, hot dogs and pretzels, a little salty when a breeze goes through the humid and otherwise standing air, then again a little sweet from all the department stores, suddenly it stinks of sewage again and this cycle runs through the whole stay in the city. Even if you're standing on the Empire State Building or looking at the skyline at Exchange Place in New Jersey (the latter I can only recommend to anyone who looks at NY - the view is unique and it's not touristy, sometimes I'm standing there alone!), you think you can still smell or smell it.
But if you walk up 5th Avenue on the left side towards Central Park, you will inevitably pass Abercrombie and Fitch Flagstore. Admittedly the shop looks rather unimpressive from the outside, but then, on this summer day in New York in May 2006, I suddenly smelled something on the street that my nose had never smelled before. I was literally drawn into this place. There I was, 18, young, quasi chronically broke, in the flagstore of A&F.
I bought myself a t-shirt, two jeans and a hoodie - the budget really didn't give me any more.
Arriving at the hostel in Chelsea I unpacked my booty... there it was again: this smell I had noticed on the street. A freshness, an energy, a kick I'd never smelt before. Sex to wear, I thought to myself.
I was sniffing my clothes the whole time until a fellow student asked me if I had bought Fierce. Did I buy anything? Fierce... this scent, you know, Abercrombie's.
Blue-eyed as I was, I thought the store had simply set up such incense sticks or it had been sprayed with a very unique room spray. But you could buy that?
I saved the rest of the NY stay as much as I could (and we're talking about NY here), so that at the end of the week I could buy the 50 ml bottle from Fierce. I was as proud as Oskar, it was my very first fragrance, my sex to spray on, my sanctuary.
I was so frugal with that scent, I just have to smile when I remember it. On my return flight to Munich I sprayed myself with some of the scent. During boarding I was approached for the first time by a flight attendant - 'Wow, what have you... i mean you... what's your scent?'. It worked.
Back in Munich, I often received compliments at the university for my fragrance... he was also outrageously good!
With a lot of synthetic freshness, the fragrance attracts you, with warm, woody notes it wraps you around your finger and with a gentle yet intrusive sweetness it never lets you go again. Just like I said, sex to spray on.
And my bonus: Even in Munich almost nobody knew this scent.
Fierce became my constant companion... to the university, to my student jobs, to the library, to the gym, to the bar, to the club, to the dates. Fierce was everywhere. And compliments hail from every corner. I think the highlight was a married lady who asked me if I could tell her my scent because she wanted to smell something like that on her husband.
The scent just flashed me every time I put it on, it was just my big childhood sweetheart, I'd say.
But I got older... 31, to be exact!
Today, 13 years later, after a total of 63 (!!!) stays in New York, in a long-term relationship (curiously enough with a flight attendant) and a very grounded lifestyle..... i still love Fierce (and my partner does too).
Just in November we were to Black Friday in NY and the yield consisted of two 200 ml bottles of Fierce.
I don't wear the fragrance as often as I used to, today I have a much wider selection of fragrances. But the fragrance still does something wonderful to me: it takes me back to the New York of 2006, where a young student roamed the streets of Manhattan, owned the world and the whole future was still open. When I apply the scent today, I feel exactly the same again. That's why I wear it mainly on important occasions, somehow it pushes me to expand my own limits, pushes me to grow, gives my self-confidence a certain kick (here in Switzerland we say 's Chriesi ufem Glace', the cherry on the ice, or better: the dot on the i) and sometimes I even think the scent does something with my posture.
I'm still being addressed when I wear this scent. Not so often anymore, yes, of course, everyone knows him by now, but nevertheless, there is always a nice word about Fierce. My partner loves the scent, some colleagues call me Mr. Abercrombie and for me this scent is definitely my personal flagship, maybe even my signature scent.
Clear, durability and sillage are no longer as strong as with a Dior Sauvage EDP or an Ombre Leather from TF, but these fragrances are not time machines that can take me back in time.
Today I'm 31, love this fragrance and if you believe the feedbacks give, the people love the fragrance at me.
Thank you, Fierce - you are my first great love!
Abercrombie and Fitch's signature scent "Fierce" holds a special place in all of our hearts.
It was there, clouding your brain as you had your first kiss (because basically every boy basically bathed in it from ages 13-17). It was there, gently wafting through the food court as you ate Sbarro with your besties. And it was there, choking you as you shopped for A&F graphic tees and lollipop-colored polos embroidered with the famous moose logo.
But like the moose logo, the scent of your tween years is being scrubbed from current Abercrombie stores. The iconic in-store scent will be replaced with one of their three new gender-neutral fragrances, "Ellwood."
Abercrombie & Fitch
Now, when you walk into an A&F, instead of being hit with "the scent of sneaking out of your parents' house to hook up with a lifeguard," you'll instead catch a whiff of "a musk fragrance" that's "clean, subtle and simple yet memorable," Abercrombie reps told Seventeen.com.
This is the smell that will mold a generation.
But fear not – if you suddenly get the urge to relive those fond memories, you'll still be able to snag a bottle of "Fierce" in stores or online.

Abercrombie is relaunching its pungent cologne, which haunted shoppers for years after it was sprayed incessantly in stores, with a new inclusive ad campaign
- Abercrombie's Fierce cologne is being relaunched with a new ad campaign.
- The fragrance, which was liberally sprayed in its stores until 2017, will bring back some memories for American shoppers.
- Abercrombie has a plan to shake off its former image with a new bottle and an inclusive ad campaign. The new bottle does still have an image of a shirtless torso, however.
The smell of Abercrombie's Fierce cologne, which was liberally sprayed around its stores up until 2017, may bring back some dark memories for American shoppers or even unearth a fresh bout of anxiety, but the retailer has a plan to fix that.
This weekend it will relaunch the product with a new image. Fierce has a new bottle and a more inclusive ad campaign to appeal to millennial shoppers; the scent will stay exactly the same, however.
Shoppers will notice that the new bottle still bears the image of a shirtless torso as before.
The campaign, #FaceYourFierce, is intended to explore "the modern notion of what it means to be fierce through a sensitive, diverse and inclusive lens," the company said in a press release on Thursday.
To do so, it has a new set of faces to promote the product, including mental health advocates, a group of Malibu surfers who volunteered as firefighters during the recent California wildfires, and LGBTQ+ activists.
The scent has come to be associated with Abercrombie's former image — one whiff and it takes you right back to its dimly lit stores with booming music and shirtless models. This is an image that current CEO Fran Horowitz has been working hard to shake off since she took the reins in February 2017.

In the early to mid-2000s, Fierce cologne was sprayed throughout the day by topless models or sales assistants and reportedly even blown through the air-conditioning system, meaning that its stores and even large parts of the surrounding streets or malls were often also polluted with the smell.
While this fanatic fragrance spraying was brought to an end in 2017, the product has continued to be sold in stores and online since then. According to Abercrombie, Fierce ranked in the top four best-selling men's fragrances in the US for the past seven years. And if you go by online reviews, it's the former image of the scent that's putting customers off.
"This fragrance has literally become my favorite scent on the market," one reviewer wrote on Base Notes. "I have many niche fragrances but I keep coming back to FIERCE. FIERCE only gets a bad rep because it is associated with AandF which is targeted toward vapid, narcissistic teens."

Fierce by Abercrombie & Fitch has been a best seller, since its release, but 10-15 years ago; it was an absolute monster. In high school, I smelled this cologne everywhere I went, seemingly. With such popularity, there are bound to be other colognes that come along, which smell similar to Fierce. There’s always a market for ‘clones’ of popular scents. Also, over time, the quality of Fierce has dipped and it doesn’t seem to pack the same punch anymore.
With that, guys are looking for an alternative, that either smells/performs better or costs less (or both). In this post, I want to present you seven options, that smell quite a bit like Fierce. Some will be more expensive, while others will be cheapies, but all produce that Fierce-like vibe.
Which Men’s Fragrances Smell Like Abercrombie Fierce?
MONTBLANC Legend Eau de Toilette, 1.0 Fl Oz– Legend has plenty of similarities to Fierce, but isn’t as spicy nor woodsy as the Abercrombie scent. Legend opens up with pineapple, that isn’t too sharp, and later is joined and tempered by lavender.
Legend also features a crisp apple note and the smooth sandalwood, which is quite nice. Mont Blanc Legend has also been a best seller for years. Legend is clean and masculine with a solid woody dry down. Legend Full Review.
Woody and Iris
Dior Homme Eau For Men by Christian Dior for Men – 3.4 oz EDT Spray– Dior Homme Eau is of course, a close flanker of Dior Homme. However, it also creates a close aroma like our target scent. Eau has a strong cedar base and the spice of coriander. However, it starts off with top notes of grapefruit and bergamot.
The grapefruit and coriander is the same as Fierce, it uses different wood notes, but has that same sort of base. One big difference, is the presence of iris, which is the highlight of the original Dior Homme. This one has solid performance of 6-8 hours. Dior Homme Eau Review.
Best Similar Cheapie
Frank Olivier Sunrise Eau de Toilette Spray for Men, 2.5 Ounce– Here is our first cheaper option. It’s not an exact duplicate of Fierce, but close enough, when considering price and the reformulations of the A&F fragrance.
It’s less woody and not as dry as Fierce, but has a good lavender note, and a nice bergamot up front. If I were to go with one of the cheapest options on this list, it’d have to be Sunrise. It gives you the closest approximation and best performance, out of all the cheapies.
Affordable and Popular
Very Sexy Platinum– Very Sexy Platinum smells like a mix between a weaker old school bottle of A&F Fierce and Montblanc Legend. It never had the same level of power as classic A&F Fierce, but it was one that was always pretty popular and could draw plenty of complements. Usually not too bad of a price either.
The main differences between Platinum and those fragrances, to me at least, is a less spicy profile and it feels woodier. Very Sexy Platinum is fresh and has a nice earthiness to it.
Another Super Cheap Option
PLAYBOY New York Men Eau De Toilette Spray, 3.4 Ounce Playboy– This is the absolute cheapest option on the list. It isn’t the best, can be somewhat watered down, and is closer to Mont Blanc Legend. Nonetheless, at around $10-15 per bottle, Playboy New York is a viable option. This one has apple and vanilla leading the way.
Yet an understated dryness of vetiver and an interesting vinyl note. It wouldn’t be my first option, but this one does inhabit the same fragrance style as Fierce. Playboy New York Full Review
Better High End Version
CHANEL Egoiste Eau De Toilette Spray, 1.7 Ounce-The more advanced and grown up version of Fierce. This Chanel scent is bold with notes of tobacco, leather, and cinnamon. Throw in rose petals and sandalwood, with other dry notes, and you have a great masculine fragrance.
The overlap between the two scents comes from the cardamom, tangerine, and general woodiness. This one has much more power, though, and is overall a spicier cologne.
Oh, and the rose note, definitely separates these two. More complex and an option for guys who want to step up to an upscale fragrance.
Fresh and Clean
Skulls and Roses ED Hardy Colognes for Men, 2.5 Ounce– Skulls and Roses is another cheap option that mimics Fierce, fairly closely. It starts off with a top of citrus, lavender, and cardamom spice. Then, it dries down with musk and dry oak moss. It’s like a simpler and more linear version of Fierce.
This one is fresh and clean with more of a soapy vibe. The sillage isn’t huge, moderate at first, but quite light thereafter. It lasts about six hours, on the skin. Though, you can pick up a bottle for under $20. Skulls and Roses Review

Best Men's Colognes
Best Men’s Colognes started back in 2013, as a way to share my learning experiences with different fragrances, as I dove head first into the hobby. Since then, I have written hundreds of reviews and other pages about perfumes and colognes.
