Car Battery Cost

low costTypical Car Battery: $50-$220, installedaverage costLuxury Car Battery: $90-$300+, installed
Typical costs:
  • Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, expect to pay about $50-$120 for a typical car battery and $90-$200 or more for a premium battery with a longer warranty and better cold-weather performance, or one for a luxury vehicle. Most auto parts or discount big box stores provide free installation if the battery is purchased from them, while other battery retailers may charge $10-$100 or more for installation, depending on where the battery is located in the vehicle and their hourly labor rates. With installation charges, taxes and recycling/core fees (which vary by state), the total cost for a replacement car battery can be $60-$300 or more.
  • For example, from 2010 to 2012, CostHelper readers reported paying $52-$130 for a car battery with do-it-yourself installation, at an average cost of $86. Readers who had a battery installed for them at an independent repair shop, auto parts store or big box discount outlet paid $60-$180, or an average of $118.
  • An auto club tow truck may offer instant battery replacement instead of towing. For example, CostHelper readers with AAA membership reported paying $97-$139 for on-the-spot battery testing and replacement, at an average cost of $119.
  • Car dealerships are typically the most expensive option for having a replacement battery installed. CostHelper readers who had their battery replaced at a car dealership reported costs of $90-$307, for an average price of $204.
  • Prices for many car batteries have increased significantly in recent years, due in part to the rising cost of lead[1] (a key component in most car batteries) and increasingly strict environmental, health and safety standards for manufacturing with lead.

What should be included:
  • The first step is to test the battery[2] to see whether it simply needs recharging or should be replaced. This testing is free at most auto parts stores or departments, or car repair shops.
  • Replacing a battery is a fairly straightforward process, although it can be slightly more difficult if the battery is in a hard-to-reach location in the vehicle. DIYNetwork.com provides how-to instructions[3] .
  • The replacement battery needs to match the manufacturer's recommended group size for that make and model of vehicle. Group size is based on the outside dimensions of the battery and the placement of the terminals. Battery retailers will look up the group size based on the vehicle make and model, or this information is available on AutoBatteries.com[4] . Common group sizes are 34, 35, 65 or 75, and there are combination sizes like 34/78, with two sets of terminals.
  • Battery warranties usually have a total warranty period and a free-replacement period (typically three months to three years). The length of the free-replacement period is most important, because if the battery fails after that ends, the consumer generally gets only a prorated credit toward a new battery.
  • There are several other factors to consider. A battery's cold-cranking amps rating measures its ability to start a car in cold weather, at about zero degrees F. Reserve capacity indicates how many minutes the vehicle should run on battery power alone, if the car's alternator fails. And batteries are stamped with a date code, either on the case or attached label; Consumer Reports[5] recommends buying a fresh battery that is no more than six months from its manufactured date.
Shopping for a car battery:
  • Make sure the battery fits the climate and driving conditions as well as the vehicle make and model. Consumer Reports has a car battery buying guide[6] .
  • Car batteries are available through a wide variety of retailers, such as AutoZone[7] , Pep Boys[8] , Sears[9] or Walmart[10] .

I was going to try to replace the battery myself but the old battery had corroded so much that I wasn’t able to remove the terminals with my pretty crummy tools at home. There was this nasty green powder caked all over the red battery terminal.
I called AAA and thought the quote was okay. But included in their installation, he tested the old battery (dead) and, most importantly, he very meticulously cleaned all the corrosion gunk off the terminals and waa able to remove the old battery. I also like that they email me the warranty afterwards so I can call them if anything goes wrong (defects are fully covered for 3 years and partially covered for 6 years).
While AAA costs a little more, I’d recommend members use them if there is a corrosion issue (so it’s difficult to remove or requires substantial cleanup), or if you want the convenience of their warranty (easier to enforce because you know where you got it).

I would have preferred a Gold with 3 year warranty but there weren't any offered for my car and I didn't feel like looking for a battery that would fit but wasn't guaranteed to fit (35 and 24Fs more generally fit but I wasn't sure if it would void the warranty to choose one not recommended for my make). I used a $40 off $100 or more coupon and the price above includes the $5 deducted for returning my used core and 5% cashback through my discover card.

I was trying to depart Kroger after shopping. I can't start the car. I would think it is a dead battery and I occasionally start the car and drove to advance autoparts. They test the battery and said the CCA is 11 comparing to normal of 550. I do online purchase of an $124 battery before applying a $40 coupon. I would bring down to $84 because I do not know that ebates fix the hooking problem between advance auto parts and ebates in cell phone version. Motorcraft battery only lasts for 3 year 11 months.

I had a battery of the same make and model purchased from Big O Tires in 2010, that had failed with 12 months still on the warranty. I called Big O and got a price quote of $116 installed. I informed the salesman the current battery was still under warranty, showing him a copy of the 2010 receipt. He then gave me a price of $95 + $5 installation. I winced, but agreed, since I had no way of knowing what the prorated warranty schedule was. When I got home I went to IBs website. At 60 months, the warranty is 25% off the current SRP which in this case was $138.95 according to the website. So my question is, should the discount of $34.74 have ethically been applied to the quoted price? Do I have cause for complaint? Is this actionable or just a breach of good faith, not contract, since the price paid is less than the SRP minus the warranty discount.

I paid $154. 00 for battery & they washed my car. I dont know if I really needed a new battery, but it has a 5 yr.warrenty they say.VW.will call me on Monday to let me know how much my deductable will be, they said probably $300.00!! I was at a car wash and the car wouldn't start afterwards and they had to jump my car. Afterwards, I drove to an autozone and said I probably need a new battery but wanted to check first. The guy came out and attached this device to the car battery and said it was fine, I just need to drive a while to recharge my battery. Glad I checked and saved some money! I don't know if all autozones are run by honest folks but I'll be returning to this one!

Too tired, hot and lazy to have the AAA tech jump the battery enough for me to get to Auto Zone, where I would've gotten it for $60 including free install. So I bought the overpriced AAA battery and let the tech put it in on the spot. It was done in 15 minutes and the tech was extremely nice. Right, he's making a commission on selling this thing so of course he was nice. But regardless, I'm a convenece person so you want easy-breezy then you're going to fork over the cash.

Need a new car battery? AAA delivers on the spot

With AAA’s Mobile Car Battery Service, you can bypass the parts store and repair shop when it’s time for a new battery. Members can contact AAA with your battery issue and a service technician will come to you to test it. If possible, we’ll replace it on the spot.

AAA’s Mobile Car Battery Service -- https://www.aaa.com/carbatteryquote/--is one of the best deals on the road. AAA car batteries are competitively priced – the average cost is about $139 – and each comes with a three-year replacement warranty.

How to get the most out of your car battery

A new battery will last, on average, three to five years, but driving conditions, climate and maintenance will affect its lifespan. You can get the most out of your battery by following these tips from AAA. Just remember to wear eye protection and gloves while working on your battery, and never smoke near a battery or allow it to be near sparks or an open flame.

• Keep your battery clean. Periodically pop the hood and look for corrosion on the battery terminals. If you see any, clean it off with a small, stiff brush and a solution of baking soda and water. After removing the corrosion, rinse the battery with water.

• Check to make sure the terminal connections aren’t loose. If they are, tighten with a wrench.

• As your battery begins to age, have it tested occasionally by a AAA Approved Auto Repair shop near you. Testing equipment today can often give you a good sense of how much life a battery has left. That way you can replace it when necessary and avoid being stranded.

AAA battery service is eco-friendly

Car Mobile Battery Service is one of AAA’s most popular membership benefits, with service techs replacing more than 2 million batteries a year. Since 1999, AAA has recycled more than 18 million batteries. Laid end to end, they’d stretch from Miami to Seattle. Old and defective batteries are recycled, saving resources and keeping hazardous waste out of landfills.

Is a AAA Membership Worth the Cost for You? [2021]

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is the most popular roadside assistance provider in the country, but are its services worth it? Learn more about saving money on roadside assistance with your insurance company.

Drivers usually can’t add roadside assistance to their car insurance policies unless they have collision and comprehensive coverage. The good news is that you can compare how much the additional coverage will cost you by using car insurance quote comparison sites like Insurify. Additionally, be sure to check out Insurify’s Best Auto Insurance Companies list if you’re looking to switch your insurance.

Is AAA Membership Worth It? AAA Costs by State

Having a roadside assistance plan is a must for individuals who travel by car frequently. Car failure or an accident can occur whether you’re making a trip across country or town. So how can you know if paying for a AAA membership is right for you?

StateStarting cost of AAA membership per year
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin$49
Alabama, Kentucky, Pennsylvania$50
Montana, Wyoming$51
Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island$52
New Mexico, Texas$53
Oklahoma, South Dakota$55
California, Nevada, Utah, Washington$56
Arizona$57
Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Hawaii$58
Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina$59

West Virginia$68
Idaho, Oregon$69
Connecticut, Delaware, Ohio$70
Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia$74

Roadside assistance prices depend on your current insurance policy and state

Whether you purchase a roadside assistance plan through your auto insurance provider or a separate company, you’re usually guaranteed multiple services depending on the plan…and you should always be assured peace of mind.

Before we get into the pros and cons of a AAA membership and a similar coverage through your insurance company, let’s go over roadside assistance basics.

What services do roadside assistance plans provide?

Roadside assistance service typically involves a professional mechanic driving out to you and your stalled vehicle and either fixing it on-site or providing towing services to your auto repair shop of choice. The following services are usually included in a roadside assistance visit:

  • Towing
  • Battery service, like a jump start
  • Flat tire change
  • Lockout service
  • Fuel delivery
  • Extrication or winching

Do I really need roadside assistance?

If you’ve never experienced mechanical troubles with your vehicle before, it can be tempting to go without roadside assistance coverage to save a few dollars a month. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you need professional help and don’t have a reliable service on hand, like AAA or your insurance company, you could become vulnerable to towing company or auto body fraud. That means you’ll end up paying massive amounts out of pocket. Towing without membership or insurance can cost anywhere from $75 to $200 per incident.

In comparison, many auto club memberships only cost between $75 to $250 per year or $6 to $21 per month. Adding roadside assistance coverage to your insurance policy can cost anywhere between $20 to $180 per year, depending on your policy.

Before you decide whether or not you can go without the extra coverage, ask yourself these five questions about yourself and your car:

1. How old is my vehicle?

The older the car, the higher the need for additional service. Your new vehicle will most likely be running well and generally is covered under the manufacturer’s emergency roadside service for the first few years or up to a certain amount of mileage. Even if your car is not under warranty, any problem you run into will be cheaper to handle individually instead of paying for an optional coverage you may never need.

2. What is my average daily mileage?

The less you drive, the less need you’ll have for roadside assistance. If your daily commute tends to stay close to home, you’ll most likely be aware of where local body shops are and which ones you can call when in need. When driving in new locations, it would be comforting to have a professional take care of these matters for you.

3. How much time do I want to invest in repairing my car?

If your patience quickly wears thin, you might benefit from roadside assistance. Mechanical skills are great to have, but nothing beats having a professional coming to you in a time of need with a quick fix.

4. How much money do I want to spend in the long run?

Surprisingly, paying the increased premium or membership fee for roadside assistance will end up saving you money in the long run. Without this coverage, having a mechanic come out to your location can easily be more expensive than you had anticipated—as much as $200 per incident.

5. Who is offering you roadside assistance coverage?

You might want to think twice about roadside assistance if you already have it through your car’s manufacturer or credit card. Many carmakers and credit card companies will offer free roadside service with certain perks and limitations. It’s best to check with your manufacturer and credit card company to confirm before you purchase additional roadside coverage from your insurance provider or a third-party club.

How much does a AAA membership cost?

Because AAA is a federation of different motor clubs, the cost of membership varies by state and membership level.

AAA offers three tiers of membership, including Classic membership, Plus membership, and Premier membership. Generally, signing up for a AAA membership includes a one-time new member fee that can cost anywhere from $10 to $20. Adding another individual (such as a family member) to a pre-existing account usually starts around $30 and increases for AAA Plus and Premier levels. AAA also offers renewal fees that are significantly less than the original cost of becoming a member.

What are the benefits of being a AAA member?

The specific benefits of AAA differ based on your membership level. For example, Plus and Premier members receive more free towing miles and higher reimbursement minimums for locksmith services. Higher membership levels also offer coverage for stolen luggage and hotel expenses if your vehicle is repaired on a road trip.

You can use your AAA protection anywhere on the road, even if you’re traveling in a vehicle that you don’t own—the membership benefits follow the driver, not the car. However, some Premier member benefits have mileage limitations for services like emergency travel and concierge assistance.

AAA is also well known for its wide range of deals outside of the auto industry. You’d genuinely benefit from member discounts on things like entertainment, attractions, airfare, car rentals, cruises, dining, hotels, shopping, etc. A few affiliated companies include 1-800-Flowers, Banana Republic, Busch Gardens, K-Mart, Macy’s, and many more!

If separating your roadside assistance from your insurance company doesn’t sit right with you, AAA also offers its own home insurance (for homeowners), auto insurance, renters insurance, and life insurance. Some AAA clubs also provide identity theft insurance.

Conclusion: Getting roadside assistance with AAA

In general, towing and labor services are cheaper with your insurer because the cost is simply rolled into your policy’s monthly premium. It can also make sense to add this option to your car insurance plan to ensure smooth coordination for follow-up services you need to file a claim.

Therefore, if your only concern is having access to a trustworthy towing and maintenance service, purchasing through your insurance company is probably the way to go.

It’s important to note that using your roadside assistance frequently could lead to higher insurance premiums, especially if you make repeated claims on top of that.

Routinely getting your car stuck in a ditch or blowing a tire is a red flag that you probably aren’t the safest driver. Before you decide to buy through your insurance company, consider the cost and payoff of extra roadside coverage.

Here’s What to Expect During a AAA Battery Service Call

How Much Does AAA Battery Service Cost?

Written by:  Howmuchisit.org Staff

Last Updated:  August 15, 2018

AAA battery service, one of the many services offered if you are a member of AAA, will send out a professional to replace your old car battery if it were to fail.

How much does mobile AAA battery replacement service cost?

If your battery is just dead and needs to be jumped, this should not cost you anything as long as you are a member of AAA.  However, if you need a completely new battery, AAA will offer to bring you or sell you a competitively priced battery.  In most cases, the cost of a car battery through AAA’s service is going to depend on the year, make and model of your car.  Based on a few vehicles on the official AAA website, the cost of their battery service is going to range anywhere from $100 to $160.  Non-members will have to pay $25 more.

To get an exact quote for your battery, refer to this AAA quote page.

According to Elise.com, the author claimed that she received a quote for $112.  Since she felt the price was too high, she received a second opinion at Sears, who stated that the battery was perfectly fine.

Mobile AAA battery replacement service overview

When an AAA professional is sent out to your car, they will first test the battery to see if it needs to be replaced or if it needs a simple boost.  If the battery only needs a boost, they will jump your car; however, if the battery is dead, they will install and deliver a new AAA-branded battery.   The old battery will be disposed of and recycled free of charge.

Every battery that is replaced with AAA will have a six-year warranty with a three-year replacement.

What are the extra costs?

If the car needs more than a battery, additional service charges may apply.  For example, some people think the battery is the problem when it really is something else like a starter.  If this were the case, a tow truck may be needed.

If you need a new battery but choose not to have AAA install their branded battery at the site of the car, you may have to get your car towed to a local auto repair shop to have it fixed.  This would mean that you have to pay for the services of a tow truck.  All things considered, the price of the AAA branded battery will probably be worth it, even if it is slightly higher than another brand because it will save you time and hassle.

Tips to know

Battery replacement by AAA is only available in certain metropolitan areas.

When you need a battery, simply call up your toll-free number and request service.  If you have the premium AAA service, you can send them your address by the simple click of a button on your phone or iPad.  Your location will be sent to them automatically.

How can I save money?

Non-members will have to pay $25 more than a member.  If you are not a member of the club and plan on using their roadside services, you may want to consider joining.

A battery may not be required.  Before they send out a new battery, they will test the old one to see if it just needs a jump.

If you can have someone pick you up, consider going to a local auto parts store to buy your battery.  Replacing an older battery is a lot easier than you think and can even save you a few dollars.  Remember, whenever you use a roadside assistance service, you are paying a premium to use the services.

Depending on the battery, some may include a small $10 recycling credit.

Since the AAA battery prices can be high, consider having them jump your car and head to a local auto shop to have your battery checked a second time.  Some conflicting stories on the Internet have stated that sometimes AAA said the battery was in need of replacement while other auto part stores said the battery was fine.  If you have the time, it does not hurt to get a second opinion.

AAA: Is it Worth the Cost? — What You Need to Know

AAA Battery Replacement Consumer Reviews

PANORAMA CITY CA, CALIFORNIA -- I drive a 2007 Chevy suburban. I had to replace my battery in June of 2016. I was at the park and after my workout my car wouldn't start so since I had AAA I called them and within 45 minutes they had replaced my battery and left. Cost of the battery was $175 and included a 36 month free replacement. Fast forward to October of 2017 (that's 17 months after purchase) and my battery died again. Called AAA, technician came and checked and recommended a battery replacement. Since I was under warranty I told him to go ahead. Notice I didn't tell him about warranty until he started the process of changing the battery, so replacement was free and I went on my way.

Now fast forward again to January 6th 2019 and my car didn't start after only 14 months of replacing the battery a second time. Technician came and was super super nice and helpful and told me my battery was no good, so went ahead and replaced it for free for a second time. Now I'm no genius but it appears that AAA batteries suck given that a car's battery should last 2-4 years give or take. But I'm not complaining just yet given that they've honor the warranty twice already and I still have 6 months more of coverage under warranty. Not to mention that in the service ticket I was given today the original purchase date is stated as October 2018 which is when they replaced the battery for the second time which means that according to that ticket I still have almost 2 years of warranty!!!

That's great, I'm about to renew my AAA membership and happy to do so, but beware that not everything is so nice about the AAA service since they mostly hire independent contractors to answer the service calls. I read that a lot of these service contractors have denied coverage or refused to replace battery due to this or that, and I can see that happening as I myself was a victim or this bad service and neglect. New Year's Day my wife, daughter and I went to the park and after we finished taking some pics and playing the truck wouldn't start, so I called AAA. Technician came within 25 minutes, tested battery and alternator and said everything was fine, that I just needed to drive for 30 minutes to fully charge it.

At any rate today January 6th when I called AAA again and told the technician about last week and showed him the test results ticket he just laughed and said that the battery wasn't good last week and that the technician didn't want to change the battery for whatever reason, and he went on to explain the numbers from the test. So yes some technicians are bad and lazy and won't do their job seriously, but I'm still a AAA fan as long as they keep honoring their warranty.
