For the nights when getting a full eight hours of beauty sleep is just not possible (think: red-eye flights, bachelorette parties, the eve of a Big Meeting), there are undereye masks. Unlike a sheet mask or a traditional skincare face mask, these patches are formulated specifically for your delicate undereyes to target eye-specific issues like fine lines and crow's feet. Uniquely shaped and formulated to stay put, they're perfect to slap on your clean, dry undereyes when you're traveling, before an event, or anytime you're feeling puffy or swollen (looking at you, post-happy hour mornings).
At the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, we test thousands of skincare products annually to help our readers rest easy knowing they're investing in products that actually work. Most undereye patches claim to do anything from hydrating and firming the skin underneath the eyes, to reducing fine lines, to diminishing puffiness and dark circles, or brightening the eye area — but only some actually do so. That's why we rounded up 43 of the most popular undereye masks (tested on 250 women) to narrow down the field to find the 15 best picks that actually work.
How we test undereye masks
We sent products (with labels obscured) to hundreds of women with undereye concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness, and lack of firmness. After using the masks at least three times, the women answered a detailed survey on performance, ease of use, and efficacy. We also took in-Lab measurements before and after use with the Visia Complexion Analyzer, which can measure wrinkles, spots, UV spots, pore size, and skin texture.
What we found was surprising: The most common benefit seen with these products in the Lab was softening and smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles immediately following application. (About 90% of the panelists agreed that the patches hydrated their skin). As far as eliminating dark circles and undereye bags, our findings only saw occasional tightening benefits, low reduction of undereye bags, and little (if any) improvement of dark circles. That means that these patches really are best for acute issues like puffiness and tired eyes. Think of eye masks as a Band-Aid, not a cast: They offer a temporary fix, not a long-term cure.
Our favorite eye patches scored points for not leaving an unpleasant residue and did not interfere with any makeup application following use, making them ideal for applying first thing in the morning, before a night out, or on the go. Bonus: 79% of testers reported softening, cooling, and relaxing benefits across the board, so try 'em during your next self-care regimen.
Below are the best undereye masks you can buy, a combination of our top-tested products, editors' and expert picks, and cult-favorites that have stood the test of time. Don't forget to follow up with a best-tested eye cream and concealer for your most radiant eyes ever.
BEST OVERALL UNDEREYE MASKHydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (8 Pairs)
For on-the go rejuvenation, these eye patches — designed to work in just 10 minutes — ranked easiest to use in our tests. Testers gave them perfect marks for having a pleasant fragrance and staying put without leaving any unpleasant residue behind. In the Lab, they received high marks for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles — by 23% in our tests.
Testers also gave this set one of the highest scores for hydration, with one saying, "loved the way my under eye skin felt after using this product," and that skin "looked noticeably different." The asymmetric shape and generous size tackles a myriad of issues and can extend to reach crow’s feet, too.
BEST VALUE UNDEREYE MASKFlashPatch Eye Gels (30 Pairs)
Clocking in at about $1.67 per use, these undereye gel masks are an economical choice that delivers serious results. The gels feel instantly soothing as the patches go on, and testers liked that they stayed put during application and left a serum-like residue behind that consumers felt hydrated skin. Lab tests showed this mask improved the look of fine lines and wrinkles by 9% immediately after application and a quick five-minute usage time means you'll see results fast.
MOST POPULAR UNDEREYE MASK ON AMAZONUnder Eye Collagen Patch (16 Pairs)
Though we haven't tested these in the Lab, Amazon reviewers cannot get enough of these luxe-looking eye patches. With well over 10,000 reviews, these gold patches are the top-seller in eye masks. Reviewers swear that applied twice weekly, "it keeps eyes looking young firm and healthy." One even says the formula is "better than Botox." The brand says the patches are formulated with hyaluronic acid and collagen and that you'll see results in 30 minutes flat.
BEST UNDEREYE PATCHES FOR PUFFINESSHydrogel Eye Patches (30 pairs)
If bags and puffiness are your main issues, reach for this 2021 Beauty Award winner. The effective patches had 80% of testers agreeing that eye area puffiness was reduced after just one use, and 96% of testers said they felt instantly refreshing. They're infused with a range of botanical extracts like pear, blueberry and blackberry and glycerin, which helps to soften and hydrate skin.
BEST HYDRATING UNDEREYE MASKSmoothing and Relaxing Patches (7 Pairs)
Laced with plant extracts, this product tied in second place overall in our Lab tests. This mask diminished the look of fine lines and wrinkles by 15% immediately after application, though they didn't have an impact on puffiness or dark circles.
Our testers felt these patches hydrated skin, and liked that they didn't slide around after application. "I could see and feel immediately after removing the pads that my skin was smoother and softer," said one tester. "Even my family noticed a difference.”
BEST UNDEREYE MASK FOR SENSITIVE SKINDead Sea Osmoter Eye Mask (6 Pairs)
These patches are formulated with Osmoter, Ahava's proprietary Dead Sea mineral composition that claims to elevate moisture, smooth lines and wrinkles, and minimize signs of fatigue. One GH editor with super sensitive skin swears by these to instantly soothe puffy eyes during eczema flare-ups. "My skin feels hydrated and calmed after use," she says.
BEST REUSABLE UNDEREYE MASKEye Therapy Patch (6 Pairs)
A celeb favorite, these eye patches are actually reusable for up to three wears which means less waste and more bang for your buck — if you follow the instructions, each use comes out to around $2.72 (though some reviewers say, "I use them more than 3 times each and still totally works").
They're made with simple ingredients like wheat germ oil, ceramides, and avocado oil, and reviewers "love the way it hydrates and reduces puffiness." After wearing the patches for 30 minutes, simply replace them into the included chic metal case until you're ready for your next round.
BEST UNDEREYE MASK FOR TRAVELBaggage Claim Eye Masks (6 Pairs)
While we haven't tested these Instagram-famous patches, we do know you'll feel like a star using these glitzy masks while traveling. They are formulated with elastic for a snug, custom fit and are formulated with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and fill the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while aloe and lavender soothe skin. Since they're made of cellulose fiber and gold foil, not slippery gel, they'll stay put even if you're running to catch a flight.
BEST UNDEREYE MASK FOR DRY SKINWater Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches (30 Pairs)
Think of these as a drink of water and a cup of coffee for your under eyes. The Water Drench line is packed with hyaluronic acid that works to bring hydration to skin all day long, while caffeine brightens eyes instantly. These patches are also formulated with skin-soothing ceramides and collagen to soften skin and smooth lines.
BEST CRUELTY-FREE UNDEREYE MASKSEye Got This (5 Pairs)
Vegan and cruelty-free, these holographic eye patches are as cute as they are effective (even Chrissy Teigen loves 'em!). Reviewers say these masks feel great and brighten undereye skin after use, but don't do much in the way of dark circles. "I felt that the tiny lines by the corners of my eyes were much less noticeable," says one reviewer. "My whole eye area felt hydrated."
BEST UNDEREYE MASKS WITH RETINOLBenefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask (12 Pairs)
If you have crow's feet and visible signs of aging around your eyes that you want to nix, these are the patches for you. Retinol is a miracle worker on wrinkles: It speeds up cellular turnover to boost skin’s collagen production to both minimize and prevent fine lines, meaning it works on existing lines and stops new ones from popping up.
BEST ROSE GOLD UNDEREYE MASKSUnder Eye Wild Rose Gold Hydro-Gel Mask (1 Pair)
Rose gold isn't just for jewelry. Formulated with anti-inflammatory rose extract, these collagen-infused hydrogels work to hydrate and depuff eyes quickly. Apply the gels for 20 minutes, then pat in any remaining product around the eye area.
BEST FIRMING UNDEREYE MASKSBright Eye Firming Mask (5 Pairs)
Celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas is known for her facials that leave skin looking instantly refreshed and glowing. When you can't head in for a salon service, these eye masks are the next best thing. They're made with silk protein, hyaluronic acid, and algae extract to hydrate and plump eye skin for immediate smooth-looking results.
14No Puff Zone Hydrating Hemp Hydrogel Under Eye Mask
Infused with cannabis sativa seed oil, these hydrogels claim to restore, smooth, and brighten the undereye area. While we haven't tested these claims in the Lab, these leaf-shaped gels are certainly a statement — and super giftable.
15Watermelon Burst Hydrating Eye Patches (6 Pairs)
Yes, they're adorable, but these patches are made with skin-friendly niacinamide and brightening watermelon extract. Reviewers say that these patches feel a bit drier than other undereye masks: "There is nothing to massage in after I remove them," says one reviewer. The upside? They stay put and don't slide around, making them great for use while on the move.
16Cucumber Eye Masks (1 Pair)
Sephora reviewers love the soothing and depuffing feeling of this cucumber set. Instead of being made of a gel-like material, these are made of a natural fiber so they feel more reminiscent of sheet masks made specially for your eyes.
Sephora has many different iterations of eye masks, but cucumber is the reviewer favorite to reduce puffiness. It's just as relaxing as placing fresh-sliced cucumbers on your eyes — but a lot more functional.

De-puffing Gel Eye Patches That Actually Work
While I totally understand their Instagram-worthy appeal when it comes to posting skincare selfies, eye masks have always seemed like somewhat of a gimmick to me. While they seem miraculous in theory, I’ve always questioned whether or not they actually work when it comes to brightening up pesky dark circles, deflating under-eye puffiness, and softening the appearance of stubborn crows feet and fine lines in the delicate eye region.
But, I have to admit, despite my initial skepticism, I’ve recently found myself reaching to my freezer (which is where I store all of my face masks for an extra puff-reducing effect) regardless of my enduring doubt about the beloved beauty product’s ability to actually give me some visible results.
Now before I go ahead and officially admit to my change of heart about eye masks, there is the one caveat worth mentioning that not all of them are created equal. While some that I’ve tested did absolutely nothing to quell the swelling, others (somewhat surprisingly) worked like a charm. Whether you’re a staunch believer of the eye-enhancing powers of these cooling masks or are a long-term skeptic with a newfound sense of optimism, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite depuffing gel eye patches that actually work.

True story: I used to draw in dark circles under my eyes in college to convince my professors that I was too tired to come to class. Seeing as I had to actually go to class for them to see my handiwork, this plan was definitely flawed, but it did help get me out of a few boring lectures. Now that I am actually perpetually exhausted, I'm a little annoyed that I was ever awake enough to run a scheme like this. Nowadays, there's really no need to accentuate my already terrifying under eyes.
When you've woken up with dark circles, puffy eyes, and more pronounced lines, concealers and eye creams can only do so much. But before you head to the derm's office for some under-eye fillers, try reaching for some under-eye masks instead. These convenient, self-sticking patches belong in every beauty kit for those SOS moments. Pop them on in the morning, and no one will be able to tell you were up until 3 AM, binging a new show on Netflix. If you're a responsible person who gets your 8 hours of sleep every night, they can also come in handy as a relaxing makeup prep. Below, find 39 of the best under-eye patches that will undo everything you put yourself through.

Fake A Full Night's Sleep With These 7 Under Eye Masks
When you wake up in the morning after hardly sleeping the night before, it's tempting to reach for a cup (or three) of coffee and to accept that dark circles and puffy eyes are your unfortunate reality for the day. But that's where these nifty little patches come in. The best under eye masks can deliver serum that relieves swelling and puffiness, make it appear smoother and feel softer, and even provide effective ingredients that improve your skin's barrier function.
The delicate and thin skin under your eyes is susceptible to all kinds of issues — from milia (those tiny white bumps that appear out of nowhere and are so difficult to get rid of) — to broken blood vessels. Retaining water this month? You can thank your under eyes for being the first part of your body to give you away with puffy lids and swelling.
But, as much as this area of our faces can be finicky, it just wants and needs TLC — and eye masks are the perfect product to incorporate into your skin care routine. For starters, they require little to no effort on your part. After cleansing and toning your skin, apply the patches and let them work their magic for 10-20 minutes as you get dressed, eat breakfast, and make the bed. Feeling particularly puffy that day? Place the patches in your freezer for 10 minutes before wearing them. When your timer goes off, remove the eye mask, dab a bit of eye cream under your eyes and a moisturizer with SPF on your skin, and go about your day with bright eyes that will make it look like you actually got your Zzz's.
8 best under eye patches for dark circles, puffiness and lines
The compounding stressors of the election, an uptick in destructive hurricanes and the coronavirus pandemic might be taking a toll on your quality of sleep. As a result — or for other reasons — you may have noticed that you feel both sluggish and may be dealing with pronounced dark circles, puffiness and lines and wrinkles. In addition to a lack of sleep, Doris Day, MD, a board-certified dermatologist previously told NBC BETTER that over-consumption of alcohol, dehydration, rubbing your eyes and eating unhealthy foods can also contribute to dark circles.
While making time for the recommended eight to nine hours of sleep a night isn’t always possible depending on your lifestyle, there are products you can add to your skin care routine to help fake a wide-awake appearance. One popular option is under-eye masks which can help hydrate your skin and have anti-aging benefits. “You need a formulation specific to the eye area because the skin is very thin — 40 percent thinner than the rest of the skin on the face to be exact,” said Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. Under eye masks are multipurpose. Engelman shared a “genius trick” someone shared with her: After using eye patches for the directed time, remove them, flip over and place over smile lines. “The patch doesn't know that it's only supposed to help the eye area, so if it hydrates in the periorbital region, it will do the same for the smile lines as well,” she said.
Anyone can rock under-eye patches if they want — brands such as Kiehl’s and Blu42 have created under-eye masks targeted towards men. You can typically find under-eye masks at your usual beauty retailers — Sephora, Ulta and Dermstore — as well as Amazon, Walmart, Target. Popular under-eye mask brands include Tarte, Glam Glow and Joanna Vargas, which are all available directly through the brands and at retailers such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Net-a-Porter and Macy’s. We consulted dermatologists to learn more about the efficacy of under-eye patches. Additionally, we consulted skin care and beauty experts — a celebrity esthetician and makeup artists to Hollywood stars— for their product recommendations.

What do under eye patches do to your skin?
According to the medical experts we consulted, under-eye patches work by targeting dark circles, crows feet, wrinkles, fine lines and help reduce puffiness. In addition to helping you look more well-rested, under-eye masks hydrate and nourish your skin through high-quality ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, and anti-aging ingredients like retinol, as well as caffeine and niacinamide to brighten dark under-eye circles. “Eyes are the first area we see the signs of aging and [fine lines and wrinkles] can become noticeable in our mid-twenties,” said Engelman.
Do eye masks really work?
Are under-eye patches effective? Yes, Engelman said: Eye masks featuring hyaluronic acid and ceramides help plump the skin. Engelman called under-eye masks are “amazing” given their ability to quickly infuse ingredients into your skin. “The active ingredients are a higher concentration because they should usually stay on for only about 20 minutes and give an instant pick me up,” she added. Hadley King, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, agreed that under-eye patches are efficient. She added the actual patch is occlusive, meaning it can prevent water loss and coupled with the hydrating active ingredients found in the eye masks, your skin can soak up the eye mask ingredients easily. “I think the biggest benefit is that the skin under the patch will feel very hydrated,” said King, so there’s no need to apply eye cream after wearing eye patches unless you feel compelled to do so.
8 best under eye patches and masks of 2020
Whether you’re under-eye area needs some extra TLC because you’re exhausted, have dehydrated skin, are hungover or are just looking to try something relaxing while sheltering-in-place, consider incorporating eye patches into your skin care routine.
Best overall eye patches: Exuviance
1. Exuviance All-Out Revitalizing Eye Mask
Rachel Maiman, MD, a dermatologist at Marmur Medical in New York, said this mask from Exuviance is a must-have. “The key ingredient contained within the mask is lactobionic acid, a poly-hydroxy-acid that hydrates and firms the skin by acting as a humectant, a substance that helps attract and hold onto water,” she explained. Maiman noted there is a “dramatic improvement” in hydration, the skin is visibly plumped up and lines are “immediately” softened. Lactobionic acid also provides long-term anti-aging benefits by working similarly to alpha-hydroxy-acids like glycolic acid, Maiman added, noting it helps stimulate the production of collagen and gently exfoliates the outermost layer of skin. Due to the larger molecule size of lactobionic acid, it has a limited ability to penetrate your skin which “makes it highly suitable for the inherently thin under-eye skin and also makes it an excellent product for patients with more those with sensitive skin,” because it’s fragrance-free she added. The mask also contains a combination of vitamins A, C and E “that help soak up skin-damaging free radicals known to wreak havoc on collagen and elastin, critical structural proteins that also wane in concentration as we age.”
Best high-end eye patches: Chanel
2. Chanel LE LIFT Anti-Wrinkle Flash Eye Revitalizer
Maiman argued you should consider investing in these splurge-worthy eye patches. You place the hydrogel patches to your under-eye area and apply the roll-on serum on top of the patches, then leave them on for 10 minutes. The rollerball helps move fluid away from the under-eye, where it likes to collect. “The purpose of the hydrogel patches is to create an evaporation-free barrier. This ensures the ingredients contained within the serum are maximally absorbed by the skin,” she added.
Best overnight eye patches: Sio Beauty
3. Sio Beauty Super EyeLift
Engelman “loves” these eye patches from Sio for a few reasons. First, they’re made from medical-grade silicone “gently compressing your skin, keeping it smooth.” Second, “they intensify hydration and support your skin's natural ability to retain moisture, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.” And you can achieve these skin benefits on other parts of your body since Sio makes masks for your face, neck and decollete. You can sport these patches while you cozy up under your weighted blanket and can reuse them up to ten times each.
Best 2020 release: Loops Beauty
4. Loops Beauty Eye Mask
King recommended Loops, a skincare line specializing in masks and launched in mid-March. She said these hydrogel eye masks “are designed to fit into moments of your daily life.” She noted it’s rich in niacinamide, which is “great” for tone and texture, as well as retinol, a hydrating pearl extract and a nourishing flower complex. King also noted these eye masks hydrate, moisturize, brighten, smooth, depuff and protect from free radicals. Another notable Loops value for King: Loops masks are compostable, cruelty-free and free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and synthetic fragrances.
Best reusable eye patches: Wrinkles Schminkles
5. Wrinkles Schminkles Silicone Eye Pads
King said Wrinkles Schminkles eye pads are shown to help soften wrinkles and lines under and around the eyes. “These medical-grade silicone pads keep the skin taut so it can't crease or wrinkles while locking in moisture,” she said. They can also be used up to 30 times each, making the $1 cost per use practical. According to the brand, the hypoallergenic and cruelty-free eye masks can also be used to target stretch marks and scarring.
Best hyaluronic acid eye patches: Peter Thomas Roth
6. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches
Tai Young, a celebrity makeup artist and founder of Tai Young Beauty, called these eye patches from Peter Thomas Roth her “absolute favorite.” It features hyaluronic acid, while caffeine helps depuff and marshmallow extract helps soften your skin. “I keep them in a mini-fridge at my makeup station and my actors on “Grey's Anatomy” love them, even the guys,” she said. It’s not necessary to store your eye patches in a fridge, but the cold temperature can enhance your user-experience because it leaves behind a refreshing, cooling sensation and can help further reduce puffiness.
Best brightening eye patches: Patchology
7. Patchology Restoring Night Gels
“These gel patches are soothing to the under-eye area and contain retinol and peptides so they will help target fine lines and wrinkles, and help to stimulate collagen,” said Celeste Rodrigues, esthetician and owner of Celeste Rodrigues Skincare in Beverly Hills, California. Collagen is a protein that keeps your skin looking plump and youthful. There’s also squalane, which helps soften and hydrate your skin, and offer protection from free radicals, or particles that damage healthy skin cells. Cedrus atlantica bark extract brightens and cucumber extract calms inflammation and puffiness. Rodrigues added these “amazing” eye patches have a cooling effect and also helps to “bring down puffiness, especially before makeup application.”
8. Best travel-friendly eye patches: Tatcha
Tatcha luminous deep hydration revitalizing eye mask
Meredith Baraf, a celebrity makeup artist to Lea Michelle and Hailey Clauson, said she actually regularly uses several eye masks — 111Skin, Estée Lauder andWander Beauty among them —, and noted: “All of them successfully hydrate, depuff and brighten the under-eye area using skin-loving, nourishing ingredients.” Another of her favorites is this travel-friendly option from Tatcha, a Japanese skin care line. Each order includes 10 individually-packed sheets that are compact enough to keep in your jacket pocket, slide into your purse or pop into your carry-on bag — in fact, make use of your (socially distant and otherwise safe) layover and pop on this eye mask while lounging on your next flight.
How do under eye patches target dark circles, puffiness and fine lines?
The popular benefits you receive from wearing an under-eye mask fully depends on the ingredients infused into the patches.
Under-eye masks for dark circles
While you can splurge on expensive under-eye creams and patches, both King and Engelman noted your under-eye circles are in some ways genetic and based on how your face is structured. “Genetics play a large role because dark circles are often the result of shadowing caused by our bone and fat structure — your facial contours will determine where shadows fall,” said King. Engelman added, “The darkness that is perceived is often the result of the underlying vasculature that is lying right underneath thin, translucent skin.” If you look at your inner wrist below the palm, that’s not blue skin, Engelman explained. The thin skin shows veins through it — it’s called the Tyndall Effect. “Traits that contribute to thin or pale skin or more pigment, slowing movement of blood, will increase the appearance of dark circles,” she said.
Under-eye masks to treat puffiness
Puffiness can come from either fluid or from a fat pad. “If you notice that the puffiness is worse in the morning and better by evening, and worse some days than others, then your puffiness is probably from fluid,” said King. Her remedy is to drink more water, eat less salt and sleep propped up on a couple of pillows so the fluid does not all collect in the under-eye area. “Hormonal status will also affect your fluid retention and, if this is an ongoing issue for you, then you may consider an oral contraceptive that has a diuretic effect,” said King.
Allergies can also contribute to puffiness, “in which case an oral antihistamine may be helpful.” If your eye bags are consistent then it is more likely the result of anatomy — a fat pad that has become lower over time, according to King. “The only real fix for this kind of problem is surgery: a lower lid blepharoplasty. A radio frequency device called the Venus Freeze may offer temporary improvement in the appearance,” she added.
Under-eye masks for fine lines and wrinkles
King said to look out for humectants such as hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and make your skin look plumper, which can temporarily soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Anti-aging peptides, growth factors and retinol can help stimulate collagen and elastin production to help reduce fine lines over time. Just be sure to use the products regularly for best results, advised King.
