Police Department


The Police Department is responsible for crime prevention, patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, evidence procurement, communications, records, training, youth programs, and community service. The department is responsible for a wide variety of duties including the 24-hour, 7-day protection of citizens. The department maintains routine records, accident and traffic reports, and controls recovered property and evidence seized at the scene of crimes. The department assists residents and businesses in developing crime prevention measures and offers outreach programs to inform the public of law enforcement activities.

The South Elgin Police Department currently employs 32 full-time sworn officers including three full-time detectives, one public service aid, a certified D.A.R.E. officer, and one officer assigned to community relations. The Police Department also operates a bicycle patrol unit, two school resource officers servicing Kenyon Woods Middle School and South Elgin High School, and one K-9 officer and dog named Itago.

Jerry KrawczykThe Police Department provides protection, safety and security to the community.  The department is responsible for crime prevention/community relations, patrol, investigations, traffic enforecement, evidence procurement, communications, records, training, youth programs and community service.  The department divides these responsibilities into three programs:  Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Investigations and Patrol.  The department has adopted the following mission statement:

“The South Elgin Police Department exists to enhance the quality of life in South Elgin by working in partnership with the community. We are dedicated to exhibit a strong fundamental belief in the core values of professionalism, integrity and compassion. The South Elgin Police Department will remain dedicated to provide a safe environment and treat people with respect and dignity.”

The South Elgin Police Department is located at 10 N Water Street, South Elgin, IL 60177.  The vestibule located in the Village Hall/Police Department building provides an emergency call button for after hours needs. Any issue requiring the services of a police officer to check or respond to a situation, please call 911.

Meet the Police Chief
Police Chief Jerry Krawczyk started with the South Elgin Police Department in 1996, and previously served as Deputy Chief of the department. Jerry earned a Bachelor's Degree from St. Xavier University and an MBA from Webster University.  Jerry has completed  the Northwestern Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy 400-hour training programs for police executives. Should come as no surprise that a person who swore an oath to uphold the law is an ice hockey referee (as well as a hockey player) when not on duty.
