- Some wheels come with completely sealed bearings, meaning you can't add more grease to the unit when you notice a rumbling sound. This often indicates that the bearings are straining. In that case, you would have to buy a new set of bearings.
- Grease certification is an easy way of knowing what type of grease is suitable for your bearings. Greases that are only GC-approved are ideal for disk-brake wheel bearings. LB-approved greases are suitable for chassis. GC-LB approved are suitable for all types of wheel bearings and chassis.
- Do not mix different brands or qualities of wheel bearing grease. It may compromise lubricity and other protective properties. Clean out the old grease with white spirit before you apply the new grease.
- For a grease base, choose a product with an aluminum-complex or a lithium-complex grease base since they have some of the best anti-wear and anti-corrosion capabilities. Do not use copper as a grease base as it forms an electrochemical reaction with the bearing metal. The product of that reaction dissolves in salty water and leads to faster deterioration of the bearings.
Q: Do I have to grease new wheel bearings?
It depends on the make of your car. If it has a sealed pre-assembled hub unit, then you don't have to grease them since the new bearings come pre-greased. Sealed bearings are never greased but replaced when they start to wear out. Only grease bearings for vehicles with unsealed locks or hub units.
Q: How will I know that I need to replace my wheel bearings?
Just like any other metal component of your vehicle, the bearings will give some telltale signs that they need to be replaced. You may start to hear a rhythmic thumping noise that sounds like a card that's stuck on the spokes of a rotating wheel. The noise gets louder the more the bearings wear out.
Q: What is the ideal dropping point for wheel bearing grease?
Dropping point refers to the temperature at which the grease changes from its semi-solid state to a liquid state. Most greases have the recommended dropping point of 500-degrees Fahrenheit. Grease with a low dropping point won't serve its purpose as a lubricant.
Q: How long do wheel bearings last?
Depending on the quality of the bearing, they normally last between 85,000 and 100,000 miles. Some premium bearings can be pushed to 150,000 miles. However, you shouldn’t rely on the manufacturer’s advertised lifespan to determine when you should replace your bearings. To be on the safe side, check the condition of the bearings every 30,000 miles.
Royal Purple Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease stands at the top of our review because it is a reliable synthetic grease formula that will save both your automotive and marine bearings from rust, corrosion, and water washout. It can also endure high temperature and extreme pressure conditions. The Super Tech Multi-Duty Complex Grease comes close in performance and is a more affordable solution for lubricating your wheel bearings.
Oil film strength of Mobil 1™ oil compared with Royal Purple®
“Does Mobil 1 oil have less oil film strength than Royal Purple®? I have seen many times the friction test of oils using the machine that tests the oil film, test result shows that Royal Purple has more friction protection that Mobil 1 oil does, seeing these results makes me think that Mobil 1 oil is lacking some benefits, therefore Royal Purple has the better protection of all.”
Guillermo Tristani, Miami, Oregon
There are certain oils in the market today that use EP (extreme pressure) additives in their motor oil that are really designed for gear oils and not motor oils. Extreme pressure additives are typically not used in motor oils for a number of reasons, but the most important reason is that they can cause engine corrosion over time. The rigs being used in these demonstrations are primarily designed for industrial applications like gear oils where extreme pressure is a necessary and important performance feature. These demonstration rigs have very little to do with modern engines, which is why market leading oils in the industry perform poorly in these tests.

Royal Purple is an American manufacturer which produces lubricants for automotive, industrial, marine, and racing use. It is known primarily for its line of synthetic Royal Purple Motor Oil products used in gasoline and diesel engines. They also produce other fluids including gear oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and industrial gear, bearing, engine, and hydraulic oil. Other products include chassis and bearing grease, lubricant aerosol, aerosol chain lubricant, and firearm lubricant.
The company was founded in 1986 by John Williams, a synthetic oil developer and later consultant. Due to a customer who said he had never seen purple oil, Williams named the product Royal Purple. Producing synthetic oil using its own additives, the company grew and in 2004 completed a 125,000 square foot production facility in Porter, Texas. That same year they acquired a US federal trademark for the exclusive use of purple containers for lubricants. In 2011 Royal Purple had an annual income of 109.5 million dollars, and in 2012 was sold in over 25,000 outlets worldwide. In July 2012 Royal purple got a new owner when it was sold for 335 million dollars to Calumet Lubricants and is now part of their Branded Products Division.
In 2010 Royal Purple cooperated with DJ Funkmaster Flex to promote its products. Royal Purple announced on September 25, 2013 that it would sponsor the Las Vegas Bowl for three years, from 2013 to 2016. The deal is worth more than one million dollars a year. Royal Purple is the official lubricant for Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. And has partnered with many other organizations such as GRC and Rally Cross.

Ultra-Performance Grease (UPG) is a high performance, multi-service, aluminum-complex, synthetic grease which significantly increases bearing life and equipment reliability. It also makes bearings run smoother, cooler and quieter. UPG satisfies a wide range of grease requirements from the lubrication of bearings to U-joints and general purpose use. It has outstanding extreme pressure capabilities and excellent water resistance to both emulsion and washout. UPG is stable at high temperatures. It also has excellent oxidation resistance for extended service life and to provide a margin of safety between lubrication intervals. When the China Star Bullet Train was having heat problems keeping them from achieving optimal speed, they evaluated 26 of the best lubricants available. After careful testing, senior engineers selected Royal Purple's Ultra-Performance Grease. Not only did Ultra-Performance Grease help them resolve their heat problems, it also, enabled them to set a new land-speed record for bullet trains. UPG is made using a superior blend of synthetic base oils plus Royal Purple's unique, proprietary, non-corrosive Synerlec additive technology.
