Distance between San Diego and Lincoln (Nebraska)

In the quick calculation above, we assumed you had a private plane and just wanted to know the time in the air from city to city. But for most of us, we're going to be flying on a commercial airline (whether it's first class or coach). So that means we really need to account for all the extra travel time getting to the airport, waiting for our flight, and making it to the destination.

To give you a better estimate of real-life travel, we've put together a flight itinerary with actual airports. Eventually you'll be able to customize this plan, choosing your own airports and flights. But for now, here's an example we've selected to give you an idea of how traveling might work between airports.

Departure airport: San Diego International Airport (SAN)

Arrival airport: Lincoln Airport (LNK)

With the airports selected, we can estimate the travel time to and from the airport, based on how far the airport is from downtown.

Getting to the airport: 7 minutes

Getting to your destination: 18 minutes

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from SAN to LNK and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

Commercial flight time: 3 hours, 1 minute

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from San Diego to Lincoln (Nebraska) including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 5 hours

Pros: "Departing"

Cons: "More than 4.5 hrs in taxi waiting to take off. Due to “few rain” and after 3.5 hrs we needed to refuel when we were about FINALLY close to our turn for take off. Horrible service by DELTA. Never flying again with them"

Cons: "1. flight was delayed twice, which meant my arrive was delayed in Cincinnati. 2. boarding was a nightmare. After 2 delays, I was crammed into zone 4. I dont fly as often, the seats space seems to be getting smaller. 5. I sat next an overweight person. I didn't like my personal space violated. 6. The flight offer movies, I slept. Yet kept getting elbowed by this overweight neighbor. 7. I am a single, independent person. I prefer to sit near the front. First on and settled and 1st off and gone!"

Cons: "It was a 1.5 hour late leaving San Diego (6am flight), one of three bathrooms out, no coffee or tea (wtf?), we circled Atlanta for an hour, ran out of gas, landed in Pensacola, no information, missed the flight to DC ... And it's not even noon"

Pros: "Free movies was nice, service friendly."

Cons: "Long flight but shorter than scheduled, awesome."

Pros: "Pilot flew flawless crew kind and helpful it was a full flight and impressed helpful passengers to get on board was."

Cons: "Disappointed airplane not equipped with free movies. I bought ear buds on return flight for that purpose"

Cons: "I forgot my wired ear phone so I purchased the earphone. I knew i shouldn't expected anything for $2 but really I couldn't hear anything at all to watch the movie. It's used to be free, now even paid the quality of the stuff is really suck."

Pros: "On time. Good customer service. Easy route, no hassles."

Cons: "N/A"

Pros: "On time boarding in Seattle."

Cons: "Delayed in Los Angeles for about an hour. Checked on flight tracker and this flight is consistently delayed 20-40 minutes. Why hasn't Delta done anything to improve this?"

Pros: "More entertainment options were added. Thank you"

Cons: "It didn't fly fast enough. Jk. Not much to say"

Pros: "The short flight was fine. Crew was friendly."

Cons: "Because we arrived to LAX from SAN so late we had to run to the next gate and barely made the flight. The overhead bins were already very full so we had to stuff our stuff at our feet. Since we arrived so late it would have been better if they had allowed those with a tight connection to disembark first."

Pros: "They kept me fed and hydrated the whole time, they let you watch brand new movies free, the seats are super comfortable. They allow a personal item and carry on at no extra charge."

Pros: "Flight attrndants on delta are mostly ok-- but there are several with bad attitudes who cannot communicate They will just point at things and mumble incoherently with incomplete sentences They will not turn there hips when walking down the aisle to avoid hitting people & they"

Cons: "Flight attendants are miserable"

Cons: "They delayed the takeoff because of catering, really over a half hour because you wanted to sell more sandwiches. So you make us late and the poor people who had connecting flight, it just does not make sense."

Pros: "That my flight was on time"

Cons: "Pretty much everything else about it"

Pros: "Nothing I can think of right away"

Cons: "Late arrival and late departure. Poor service in having my luggage be connected to my flight. Was under the impression that they would do that after I had called the day prior and once I got to airport they didn't do so"

Pros: "Staff were all polite"

Cons: "The least amount of legroom I've ever had. The most cramped I've ever been and I'm 5'2 and fly a lot. Also for a 5 hour flight, I should not have been as uncomfortable as I was. There's less cushion than before."

Pros: "Boarding was quick and easy. Woot! For food on the SAN to JFK flight!"

Cons: "I hate that I booked and checked in early, but still had my seat assignment changed twice before boarding, and when I got to my seat, it was in front of the exit row, and my seat wouldn't recline. It was terribly uncomfortable"

Pros: "Excellent crew"

Cons: "Leg room"

Cons: "Crew was late and delayed flight 10 minutes"

Pros: "First time flying united and i love the bag policy. Great airline"

Pros: "Clean aircraft helpful staff"

Pros: "That they had TV in flight"

Cons: "N/a"

Pros: "Friendly helpful flight crew"

Cons: "Entertainment wasn’t working well at all"

Pros: "Crew was kind and thorough but gate agent was rude to me and others. Very snippy and acted as if I was bothering her when I asked a question."

Cons: "My seat was broken. Bottom was completely collapsed. 12B So hot and stuffy as well."

Pros: "Crew always smiled"

Cons: "The gate agents did nothing to combat the gate lice that lined up in the "boarding" lane long before their boarding group was called. I almost missed my boarding group (which would have resulted in my carry-on being gate-checked all the way home) because the line was 40-deep. Only after asking the first person in line did I realize that the people lined up for "Boarding Group 3" were actually all Boarding Group 4. My flight didn't have working AC, and my seat didn't recline. I was burning up the whole time, and forced to sit at an unnaturally upright angle for the entirety of the 3.5 hour flight. I've never had a good experience with United. I will not be flying with them again."

Cons: "Tell me to get the United app before we're in the air, I had no entertainment the whole way"

Pros: "Comfortable and roomy seats."

Cons: "The crew made me switch aisle seats (I specifically chose my spot) because the couple next to me had two babies on their laps. They told me to sit in the aisle seat which would then be in between the couple. So I had people reaching over me and crying babies were on both sides of me."

Pros: "It was on time"

Cons: "Snacks from Lax to Denver"

Pros: "Flight was on time and crew was friendly"

Cons: "Seat was quite uncomfortable and I would love more soda choices."

Pros: "Lots of leg room!"

Pros: "Wonderful timely departure and landing"

Cons: "None"

Cons: "The United boarding staff was no help at San Diego airport. I was at the gate 30 minutes before flight take off time, but by the time I arrived, the door was closed, so I was waiting in front of the gate seating area. the flight time was 10:40, and my clock says 10:41, and the flight was gone. This is my first time in 20 years gate attendant didn't announce anything, and there are other people who missed this flight. Because of this, my rest of the trip was miserable, missed meeting in Santa Fe. I need a money back."

Pros: "Rapid boarding and comfortable seat. The flight attendant was great!"

Cons: "Snack selection wasn't impressive, as was the onboard entertainment unit - small screen and no flight info/map. Also no lounge access in San Diego since our ticket was through Air Canada."

Pros: "It was quite average, nothing special. They severed some drinks and you get a bag of pretzels. The staff was very friendly and nice. It was only a 1 1/2 flight, so the only entertainment is magazines."

Cons: "The legroom was fine for me, but if you are about 6ft tall or over, you will feel a little cramped. Try to get an exit row seat if can."

Pros: "Flight was on time, clean, comfy."

Cons: "Media wasn't working on the seat screens."

Cons: "I had charged 300$ for my extra luggage this morning at the checking ....it never happened to me before usually I paid 100$ but never that much... I will never ever flight with United again for sure."

Cons: "Flight was delayed 3 times no compensation was offered."

Cons: "The vegetarian meal was not very good."

Pros: "They gave us free tv since we had to wait so long and they made us wait for an hour on the tarmac."

Cons: "We had a connecting flight from San Francisco that we missed due to their delays. We still don't know why it was delayed. They didnt give a clear or concise reason for the delays. Our flight landed a few minutes before our connecting flight departed and instead of holding the plane like they have done in other reviews I've read they actually took off early. We were automatically given tickets to the next flight out to our final destination (which was 6 hours later.) This was sucky but we didn't have control over it so we dealt with it. However when we went to customer service to print our new tickets we were "greeted" with two apathetic employees. The first one we didn't actually get to interact with because after waiting in line for 10 minutes when it was finally our turn he held his hand up to stop us from walking up to the counter and just left. No explanation just headed out. So we headed over to the "premier" line for a procedure that should literally take 3 minutes to interact with the next employee who made it somehow our fault that we were mildly upset with the situation. My father always told me United "sucks" we gave them a chance but we should have heeded his fatherly advice. Oh and a bonus my traveling partner has a broken pelvis so sitting around for hours on end was just salt to the wound."

Pros: "i eventually got to SF"

Cons: "The flight kept getting delayed and they wouldn't tell us why. There happened to be a line forming at the counter and when i asked an employee why people were lining up, all that i got in reply was "because the flights delayed". Thanks...i had no idea"

Pros: "Friendly, cheerful cabin crew."

Cons: "If I wanted to check my bag I wouldn't have dragged it through the airport. Boarding was a mess. Too many people put both their personal item and their bag up top. The whole boarding process stopped when people with bags there was no space for ran into people trying to get to the back of the plane. It was stuck still for a good five minutes while we figured out how to un-jam the space. I blame airline policies that discourage checking a bag, at any weight. I really dislike gate checking a bag."

Pros: "The crew and flight was excellent. Two short flights to get to my destination."

Cons: "Their new fare for budget flights processing is outrageous. I was advised booking the flight carrying size only undervfront seat storage. Then got an email explaining how this works. Then tried to checkin online 24 hours prior and you can't since you are not checking baggage. Got to airport to find that can't checkin except at counter as you need a UAL employee to scan their I'd during process to get boarding pass. Waited for employee and then she was rude about it. Again reminded me I can't bring anything else onboard or will cost me extra at gate. If UAL wants to offer this they need to be more customer friendly. I was far from impressed for the inconvenience I experienced being s longtime UAL Frequent Flier."

Pros: "This reflects first leg flight from San Fran to Chicago."

Cons: "Cramped and uncomfortable"

Cons: "they canceled the flight and put us on american airlines wich was terrible"

Cons: "Flight was delayed until the next morning because of weather"

Pros: "Crew members were nice"

Cons: "Very uncomfortable and crammed , my seat wouldn't go back and the headphone jack was broken so I couldn't enjoy movies"

Pros: "Fflight was smooth"

Cons: "Missed connection due to delay rebooking took me out of way from LA to Denver and the to Seattle. Arrived 8 hrs after expected/anticipated arrival."

Pros: "The fact i got to my destination"

Cons: "No entertainment system or wifi available"

Cons: "Leg room not sufficient"

Pros: "The wide seats"

Cons: "Big space"

Pros: "Friendly service"

Cons: "Long time in air..."

Pros: "Friendly helpful crew."

Cons: "TSA check in. Guard was sour and surly rude!!"

Cons: "Weather in Lincoln canceled the flight the night I was supposed to leave so I had to sleep in the airport. With that being said the flight and crew when I finally left to Lincoln were great."

Pros: "The pilot continued to interrupt our flight home. Watching movies, 4-5 hours his overrides of loud, loud announcement were useless. Trying to take a nap, dark, early evening. We at 29,000 feet, we're ahead of schedule, we are going to arrive 30 minutes early. Then we arrive early sit on the tarmac, because guess what was at our gate; ANOTHER AIRPLANE! All his rushing and interruption were a waste. The ground team had him wait 200 feet away from the gate for another period of time. We arrived three to five minutes early, at 7:30 PM. Very unpleasant flight."

Cons: "Seats are way to small and no leg room at all. Will not be flying united again"

Pros: "Crew were nice and flight was on time."

Cons: "I didn't know i needed an app before i will be able to enjoy entertainment on board, so i had to pay for internet to be able to download the app to be able to watch movie. PA system wasn't gud."

Pros: "They fixed some mechanical maintenance issue and did not have to make us switch planes, so I didn't mind the wait; just wished the AC would have been working a little better. Entire flight was smooth all the way back in, though at 6'1" I found the seats a bit cramped, the crew did a great job making sure people were taken care of - it wasn't their fault, and I'd prefer they take their time so we actually make it where we need to go."

Cons: "The wifi did not work at all for my girlfriend, even after paying the $18 and trying for the entire 4hr flight, the weak signal dropped out continuously. She followed up with customer service about the issue, but the website has yet to process her refund for it; it keeps crashing. I don't see how you DON'T offer free, and functional WiFi on a 4hr flight in 2016 - I have it at my dealership for customers waiting on a 45 min oil change."

Cons: "Flight was changed on me last minute so I had to call United and see if I could negotiate a better flight time. Layover in LA went 3-4 hours longer than expected so I ended up getting in a lot later than expected, meaning I had less time to spend with my wife. I missed my flight on my way back - I think when everyone was boarding, I somehow misinterpreted the digital sign that said "Ontario" to mean that they were boarding for Ontario. I had to sleep in the airport that night because I missed the flight - most uncomfortable experience ever! I paid for United's lounge but they weren't open 24/7. Then they almost didn't let me in the next morning to the lounge because technically it was only for that 1 night, even though I had been at the airport all the same. Lesson learned - maybe I should just drive to SD rather than fly."

Cons: "I had the unfortinate luck in getting the seat at the very rear of the plane. It was a red-eye flight and i was really hoping to get some sleep because i knew i was going to have an 8hr layover in Chicago. No such luck on the sleep because the flight attendants were so rude, they were talking very loudly and very vulgar yhe entire trip. I know i wasn't the only one upset because everyone around me was trying to sleep and couldn't. We just kept looking at each other like "really? Come on people!" and it wasn't till about halfway during the flight that they came over the intercom telling how to turn off the tv's on the back of the seats. It took the person sitting next to me to use the flashlight on his phone to be able to find the right button on the arm of the chair. After the experience i had, i will never fly United again."

Pros: "Plane leaving SFO never showed. Airlines called for a replacement plane 4 hours after scheduled dep time. Never using United again if it can be helped."

Cons: "See remarks."

Cons: "Didn't like the attitude at check in. Bag was over weight and they were not at all helpful in helping with that situation."

Pros: "The window seat and being able to sleep a little. Smaller plane but a little more room."

Cons: "The ranch mix isn't exactly a breakfast item but at least they tried to feed us something other than just drinks."

Pros: "Shortened flight was unexpected & appreciated. Not sure if I lost some weight or united finally lengthened safety belts but I didn't need extension this trip."

Cons: "Feel like I got conned & ripped off over set upgrade at the checkin kyiosk. Offered an economy upgrade for $79 which actually was $94. I selected seat by window that had no other passengers listed in the seating aisle but somehow in the short period of time I upgrade & walked to gate a middle eastern family with 4 kids, none over 4yrs of age happen to book the seats in my aisle. It was not comfortable & definitely not an upgrade worthy of the xtra $ having kids kicking my chair, yelling, & crying majority of the trip. Had an extreme migraine when finally landed in Houston."

Pros: "Once in the air the flight was great."

Cons: "1/2 hr before boarding should have occurred we were notified of a delay- 1/2 hr. I knew I was going to miss my connection and asked, and told if I did they would put me on the next one out an hr later, but could not nor would not address it until necessary. When we arrived, they informed me of the gate to go to... which we ran to... and when we got to there were told the plane left 15 minutes ago."

Pros: "Great time, great fast flight, clean airplane"

Cons: "it was freezing cold, no food/snack, pricey drinks (i passed), and far from friendly crew"

Pros: "I had a window seat, which was fine."

Cons: "I checked in for both my flights before departing on my red eye. When I landed in Newark I found out I had been bumped from my connection to Portland because United had oversold my flight. The next confirmed flight they could put me on to Portland was the next morning, 24 hours later! I ended up flying to Boston and taking a bus up to Portland, arriving seven hours after I was supposed to, exhausted. United customer service was indifferent and unhelpful. I will never fly United again, no matter the cost difference."

Pros: "Easy booking."

Cons: "NA"
