In 1999 Ford made some major changes to their truck lineup and to the 7.3L Powerstroke engine. This would be the first year Ford refers to their F-250/350/450 pickup trucks as the Super-Duty lineup with new body styles, transmission options, and more upgrades to enhance durability and performance. When Ford announced their Super-Duty lineup the demand for these trucks skyrocketed. In 2002 the 2,000,000th 7.3L Powerstroke-equipped Ford pickup truck came off the assembly line. In 1999, Ford added an intercooler to the 7.3L Powerstroke, to cool the compressed air from the turbo, creating denser air to support a more efficient combustion process. For the 1999-2003 models, Ford improved the fuel lift pump by converting the cam-driven mechanical pump to an electric pump to provide better fuel system performance.
