Target Cashier Demonstrates Exactly How Not To Talk To Customers

TargetSometimes for a retail manager, training your employees just isn't enough.

A reader wrote in to the Consumerist about an experience he had in a Target checkout line.

The cashier demonstrated exactly how not to talk — and exactly how not to treat a customer — at work:

"I was in the check-out line at the Target in [redacted] on Friday night, 11-30-12, around 8:30pm.

The cashier told the customer in front of me that something was 'SO GAY.'

As a 30-year-old gay man I found that comment to be completely inappropriate. I chimed in and told the cashier, [B], that his remark was rude, uncalled for, inappropriate, passé, ignorant, and not okay. He immediately said back that he said it 'all the time' and 'it was not a big deal' and 'he uses it a lot.' In the moment I did not [know] what else to do or say.

When [B] did ring me up he asked me 'why I wasn’t buying any nail polish' which was clearly a homophobic insult. I was shocked and upset. My purchase was complete and I left."

"In this case, the management of the individual store were responsible for hiring and training that employee, and may have skipped the 'no anti-gay slurs at the checkout counter' module," wrote Laura Northrop at the Consumerist.

In the end, the Target location handled the situation quite well. After getting the runaround from corporate, the customer called the store and met with the manager, who seemed "embarrassed and genuinely upset." She mailed him a gift card.

Target has quite an in-depth — albeit extremely cheesy — training program that constantly reminds its employees to be AMAZING! 

This cashier apparently wasn't listening.

Part of creating this shopping experience involves hiring staff that can maintain and operate the store, while making guests feel welcome. Cashiers employed to work at the company's many locations around the world serve several important roles in the everyday function of Target stores.

Ringing Up Items

As customers present their items for purchase, it is the responsibility of the Target cashier to be sure each item is accounted for. They will scan each barcode through the scanner and be sure this item price matches the advertised price. Cashiers will also remove security tags from purchases, such as electronic sensors put in place to deter and locate shoplifters. Cashiers are also responsible for selling age-appropriate items. This could include checking customer identification to be sure the customer is legally allowed to purchase alcohol, tobacco or medicinal products.

Processing Transactions

After the items are rung up, the Target cashier must then process the transaction. This includes informing the customer of the total after any taxes are applied. Cashiers will accept cash, check, credit or debit card payment for items. Cashiers must follow Target policies on handling money, such as checking large bills for counterfeiting and accepting forms of ID for credit and check transactions. Once the transaction is complete, cashiers will provide a receipt to the customer to verify purchases.

Customer Service

Cashiers are often the only interaction guests have with Target staff, therefore they are partially responsible for creating a “friendly face” to represent the company. Cashiers should be kind and helpful, making the shopping experience a pleasant one. They should greet customers in their lines, process their transactions in a friendly manner and assist customers as needed. This could include helping customers locate items, pricing items, informing them about sales and promotions and forwarding questions and concerns to management.

Bagging Items

It is common for cashiers to bag purchased items for the customer. They will offer the options of paper or plastic, or they will place purchased items in reusable shopping bags purchased or supplied by the customer. They should bag items in a way to best preserve them for the trip home. For example, clothes are removed from hangers and folded to neatly fit in bags. Grocery items should be positioned in bags so that they are easy for guests to carry and safe for the items. This could mean putting heavier items on the bottom of the bag and softer items on top so they are not damaged.

Not too many checks, though with debit redcard applications they're required, after a few sales fail you'll wish you'd see more checks, haha. But even when you do see a check its simple--guest fills it out, and you run it through a little slot at the register. It won't take it until you put it in proper, but there will be a place on the back of the check that clarifies and the register screen will show a visual. It's pretty simple.

Coupons you'll see a fair amount of, and for this, I cannot stress enough to ask for help from whoever is running the front (GSA or GSTL). There are some people who will try and run fraud coupons and glitch the system, and they try to target new cashiers. Anyone buying a questionable amount of soaps, detergents, etc, and a handful of coupons are often trying to pull a fast one. I go so far as turning off my light so I can take my time without feeling rushed by a building line of guests. You'll learn how to handle this on your own in time. Ask your GSTL for tips.

Spider wraps will be a pain at first. Ask if you can practice on some when it's slow.

Cash will be simple, just make sure to mark 20 and higher bills, there will be a marker at the register. Cards will be a consistent annoyance since Target uses chip cards.

I second what was said to above, when it's a small price difference, go ahead and override it. The rule my GSTL has told me is "within reason" and I've also heard "under 5 dollars". Sending someone back to check a 30 cent price difference isn't worth the hassle.

And sell Red Cards as much as you can!
