The compact vehicle known as the Audi A3 first came off the assembly line in 1996. Sharing its platform with the Audi TT as well as the Volkswagen Golf, this vehicle is now in its third generation. With a current sticker price of just under $32,000 for a base model and fuel economy of up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway (24 MPG in town), it is small wonder that it has been so well received. The base model Audi A3 is powered by a turbocharged, dual overhead cam 1.8 liter inline four with 16 valves and intercoolers. This peppy little motor puts out 170 horsepower and 200 foot-pounds of torque. For about $3000 more, buyers can upgrade to the 2.0 liter model, rated at 220 horsepower. Both engines are mated to a six speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission with a manual shifting mode. Performance is highly impressive; the A3 with 2.0 liter engine can go from zero to 60 in under six seconds, and has a top speed of 130 miles per hour (not especially useful anywhere in the U.S. except for eastern Montana and parts of west Texas).

The interior is exceptionally well-designed, with high quality materials that are firm, yet yielding. Some reviewers find the leather upholstery to be a bit on the stiff side, and some of the hard plastic touches have drawn criticism. Overall however, the interior cabin is very comfortable and well appointed. There is an abundance of cutting edge technology in there as well; including MMI infortainment system, LED interior lighting, 4G LTE connectivity for navigation and guide services on the fly, and a 705 watt, 14 speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system. As an added bonus, the A3 offers a "phone box," with which cell phone signals are boosted through an antenna embedded in the rear window glass.
