Motorola's New Budget Phone is Already Very Popular

Oct 7, 2021, 8:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola today announced the moto g pure, the company's latest entry-level phone. The phone will be sold by essentially every carrier in the US, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro, Boost, US Cellular, and Xfinity. Verizon will be the first to offer it, for $150 starting October 14th. Other carriers will offer the phone "in the coming months". Motorola will sell the phone unlocked for $160, with pre-orders starting October 14th. The phone will come in two variants: one for AT&T, Cricket, and Verizon — with support for AT&T's unique bands 14 and 30 — and the other for all other carriers, supporting T-Mobile's network and overseas 4G networks. Both variants will be powered by a MediaTek Helio G25 chip. The phone's features include a fingerprint reader on the back, basic water resistance, headset jack, and dual-band Wi-Fi. The HD+ display measures 6.5 inches. The 13 megapixel main camera is joined by a depth camera for portrait shots and a 5 megapixel front camera. Motorola claims two days of battery life from the 4,000 mAh battery. It has 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage, which is expandable with a memory card. It comes with Android 11 and Motorola promises one major OS upgrade plus two years of security updates (at least quarterly).

Verizon today launched the TCL Flip Pro for prepaid customers. The same phone launched recently on US Cellular as the TCL Flip, and earlier this week as the Alcatel Go Flip 4 on T-Mobile. (Alcatel is a brand of TCL.) TCL says the Go Flip 4 is also coming to Metro by T-Mobile. The phone is an update to the Alcatel Go Flip 3, with a larger battery, new shortcut buttons on the keypad, and a modern USB-C connector. Other key features are similar, including KaiOS, which has its own app store and enables smartphone-like features such as Google Assistant and Google Maps. The phone also sports a 2-megapixel camera, memory card slot, headset jack, Wi-Fi, and a 1.44-inch color outer display. US Cellular and Metro sell the phone for $100, and T-Mobile for $96. Verizon sells it for $70 on prepaid and will bring it to their postpaid lineup "in the coming weeks".

OnePlus today released several key specs and launch plans for its new Nord N200 5G phone. In the US, the phone will be available from T-Mobile for $216, Metro for $230, as well as unlocked for $240. Motorola Adds 5G to the Moto G Stylus

Jun 9, 2021, 8:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola today announced the moto g stylus 5G, a version of this year's moto g stylus with 5G and a larger battery, for $400. The new 5G model has excellent support for all 5G and 4G networks in the US, (except mmWave 5G.) The battery has been bumped up from 4,000 mAh to a whopping 5,000 mAh. The 5G model has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset instead the Snapdragon 678 in the 4G model. Although the 480 is a 4-series chip, it's newer than the 678 and offers similar performance. The 48 megapixel main camera offers access to the full 48 megapixel resolution, and the fingerprint reader is located on the back instead of the side. Other specs and features are similar to the 4G model, including a huge 6.8-inch full-HD display, wide camera, macro camera, 16 megapixel selfie camera, fast charging, memory card slot, and headset jack. The software is Android 11 with a nearly stock Google interface. Added stylus-oriented software includes the Moto Note app, Coloring Book app, and a customizable shortcut bar that appears when the stylus is removed. The stylus itself has been redesigned to be easier to remove and replace, and has a new feature that can help you find the stylus if you lose it. New features in the camera app include Spot Color for video and Dual Capture, which combines video from the front and rear cameras. The moto g stylus 5G will come in Cosmic Emerald. AT&T, Cricket, T-Mobile, Metro, Boost, Xfinity, and Spectrum will offer a version with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage (launch timing and pricing TBA), while the unlocked version sold by Motorola (plus B&H, Best Buy, and Amazon) will up that to 6 GB RAM / 256 GB storage. The unlocked version goes on sale for $400 on June 14th.

Samsung Reveals Galaxy A42 5G, A02s for US

Apr 7, 2021, 10:18 AM   by Rich Brome   updated Apr 7, 2021, 3:01 PM

Samsung today announced the US launch of five new phones in the company's affordable Galaxy A series, including three 5G models. The Galaxy A32 5G will be the most affordable 5G model at just $280, and will be exclusive to T-Mobile (and Metro) at launch. Samsung is able to offer 5G at this prince thanks in part to the MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G chip in the A32 5G, whereas the two pricier 5G models use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G. Samsung announced the A32 5G and A52 5G a few weeks ago, but withheld US launch details at that time. The Galaxy A52 5G will run $500 and come to both AT&T and T-Mobile (including Metro). New is the Galaxy A42 5G, which is similar to the A32 5G but adds mmWave 5G for Verizon. It also swaps the 90 Hz LCD display for a 60 Hz Super AMOLED display, switches to an in-display (optical) fingerprint reader, and has double the storage at 128 GB. Most other keys specs are identical to the A32 5G. The A42 has a unique design on the back divided into four equal parts. Verizon starts selling the Galaxy A42 5G tomorrow for $400. All three 5G models will be available by the end of this week. The two more affordable 4G models are the A12 and A02s. We reported on the Galaxy A12 for AT&T on Monday. That model will also come to T-Mobile this week, and Verizon on April 29th. The most affordable model is the new Galaxy A02s (shown), "starting at" $110, although Verizon will sell it for $150 and T-Mobile says "Stay tuned for pricing details." The A02s has the same 6.5-inch HD display and huge 5,000 mAh battery as the A12, but with expected cost-trimming on the cameras (13 megapixel main and no wide-angle), processor (Snapdragon 450), and RAM (2 GB instead of 3). The A02s also loses NFC and the fingerprint reader, but keeps 15W fast charging, USB-C, memory card slot, and the headset jack. The A02s is distinguished by its textured design on the back, divided into sections diagonally. Verizon starts selling the A02s on April 29th; T-Mobile has yet to announce a launch date.

Motorola today unveiled a full lineup of four new affordable phones, including three g-series models ranging from $169 – $299 and one 5G model for $399. All four feature large batteries (4,000 – 5,000 mAh) and large displays (6.5 – 6.8 inches). All four also include a fingerprint reader, multiple cameras, headset jack, memory card slot, USB-C connector, and a "water-repellant design" that protects against accidental spills, splashes, sweat, or light rain. They ship with Android 10 and Motorola promises one full OS version update plus two years of security updates. Moto's latest camera app supports AI scene detection and optimization, Google Lens, portrait mode, RAW format, Active Photos, Auto Smile Capture, Gesture Selfie, time-lapse, and slow-motion on all models. All four also support gestures such as Lift to unlock, Flip for DND (Do Not Disturb), Pick up to silence, and Fast flashlight, where a quick double-chop motion turns the flashlight on or off. All four phones will be available unlocked as well as from many US carriers.

  • moto g play (2021): The most affordable at $170, this phone has a 6.5-inch HD display with notch, huge 5,000 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset, 3 GB RAM, and 32 GB built-in storage. Its primary 13 megapixel camera is assisted by a depth camera for portrait mode, and the front camera is 5 megapixel. It also has 10W fast charging. The new moto g play will be offered in the coming months by AT&T, Cricket, Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Metro by T-Mobile, T-Mobile, Republic Wireless, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile.

The upgraded main camera enables a Night Vision mode and better low-light performance in general. The camera app also gains Cinemagraph mode, Group Selfie, and Spot Color for video. The fingerprint reader moves to the side and the display is slightly larger at 6.6 inches, with a corner hole-punch design. This new moto g power will sell for $250, although Best Buy will sell a variant with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage for $200. It will also come to Boost Mobile, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Republic Wireless, US Cellular, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile in the coming months.

The stylus also offers system-wide shortcuts and works with third-party apps. This is the only model of the four to come with a smaller 4,000 mAh battery, which Motorola says was necessary to make room for the stylus. It has several spec upgrades compared to the g power, including a larger 6.8-inch display with full-HD resolution, Snapdragon 678 chipset, 128 GB storage, 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, 16 megapixel selfie camera, and 4K video capture. It will sell for $300 unlocked. Boost Mobile, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, and Republic Wireless will also offer it in the coming months.

T-Mobile Makes All Scam/Robocall Protection Free

Jul 16, 2020, 11:20 AM   by Rich Brome

T-Mobile launched a new initiative today called ScamShield. The program includes a suite of several technologies designed to combat scam calls and robocalls, all of which are now free for all T-Mobile, Metro, and Sprint customers. Advanced caller-ID is included, which identifies many callers even if they aren't in your contact list. This feature was previously called Name ID and incurred a charge of $4/month/line with many plans. T-Mobile also detailed its own proprietary technology which uses machine learning to identify suspicious callers at the network level. T-Mobile claims this technology performs 30% better than the offerings of competitors like Verizon. T-Mobile's list of suspicious numbers is updated every six minutes. All customers can choose to have all such calls automatically blocked today, for free, by dialing #662#. Starting July 24th, T-Mobile and Metro customers can download a free app called ScamShield that offers a number of additional options and features for managing such calls. Sprint's Call Screener app is also free. The new initiative also includes features for protecting and managing the privacy of your personal phone number. PROXY# is a free second phone number you can give out instead of your real, main number. On incoming calls, an indicator on your phone shows which number is being called, and the second number has its own voicemail inbox. Finally, NumberChange is a new option that lets you get a whole new primary number once, for free, for a "clean slate".

Samsung and LG Launch New Affordable Phones on US Carriers

Jul 13, 2020, 3:24 PM   by Rich Brome

US carriers have launched a flurry of new entry-level phones from LG and Samsung in recent weeks. The phones include three new models from each of the two manufacturers. They range in price from $60 to $260.

  • LG's new most affordable phone goes by many names and ranges in price from $60 to $160. It's offered by just about every carrier except Verizon. T-Mobile, Sprint, and Metro offer it as the Aristo 5. Boost offers it as the Tribute Monarch. U.S. Cellular offers it as the K8x. All of those versions come with 32 GB of storage. Only AT&T's version comes with just 16 GB of storage, which they offer from AT&T Prepaid as the Phoenix 5, or from Cricket as the Fortune 3. Oddly, Cricket also offers this phone as the Risio 4. The Risio 4 and K8x have a front camera that's downgraded from 5 to 3 megapixel. Key specs in common include a 5.7-inch HD display with notch, MediaTek Helio P22 processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 3,000 mAh Battery. It also has a 13-megapixel main camera, dedicated wide-angle camera, and a rear fingerprint reader.
  • LG Harmony 4: Currently available only from Cricket (for $140), this step-up model has a larger display (6.1-inch), larger battery (3,500 mAh), and more RAM (3 GB). It also has USB-C and a better front camera. Regulatory filings indicate it may also come to Verizon prepaid and TracFone using the Sprint network.
  • LG K51: Already available from T-Mobile, Metro, and Boost, this model is now available from Verizon for $168. Compared to the Harmony 4, it offers an even larger display and battery. It's powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 processor.
  • Samsung A01: First launched on Verizon in April, Samsung's most affordable phone is now available from AT&T, Cricket, and Metro, for $115, $60, and $160, respectively. It has USB-C and fast charging, but no fingerprint reader.
  • Samsung A11: A big step up from A01, this $180 phone is now available from AT&T and Verizon. It will launch with Boost on July 21st at a limited-time price of $130. It has a 6.4-inch HD display with a hole-punch design, 4,000 mAh battery, fast charging, fingerprint reader, and a dedicated wide-angle camera.
  • Samsung A21: Now available from Verizon, T-Mobile, Metro, Sprint, and Boost. While the standard price is $250, Metro is charging $260 while Boost is currently offering it for $200. It has a similar display and battery compared to the A11, but has upgraded cameras, MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 3 GB RAM, and NFC.

Samsung Galaxy A71 5G Coming to All Major US Carriers

Jun 15, 2020, 11:45 AM   by Rich Brome   updated Jun 15, 2020, 12:12 PM

Samsung's new mid-range 5G phone, the Galaxy A71 5G, will be available from T-Mobile and Sprint this Friday for $600. Samsung has also made it official that both Verizon and AT&T will offer the phone "later this summer", and that it will also be available unlocked. We broke the news about the Verizon version of the A71 5G a month ago. T-Mobile and Sprint will offer the Galaxy A71 5G in a "Prism Cube Black" finish. The A71 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 chip, has a 6.7-inch full-HD Super AMOLED display, 4,500 mAh battery, 25W fast charging, quad rear cameras including a 64 megapixel main camera, and 6 GB of RAM. T-Mobile also announced today that it will carry many of the other models in Samsung's latest A-series of phones. The slightly cheaper Galaxy A51 5G will come to the T-Mobile, Sprint, and Metro brands this summer. The company will also offer the entry-level A01, A11, and A21, at prices ranging from $160 to $250.

New Moto e is a Big Upgrade Over Last Year's Model

Jun 5, 2020, 7:00 AM   by Rich Brome

Motorola is refreshing its entry-level lineup with a new Moto e for 2020 and a new model at the low end of its (mid-range) g series. The Moto e (2020) and Moto g fast will both be available unlocked and with Boost, and the Moto e will be available with several other US carriers as well.

  • Moto e (2020): This year's Moto e delivers several major upgrades over last year's e6. It has a larger display (6.2-inch vs. 5.5-inch) thanks to a modern notch design. It also has a larger battery: 3,550 mAh vs. 3,000 mAh, and it steps up to a 600-series Snapdragon processor (the 632) compared to last year's 400-series chip. It also offers 32 GB of storage — double last year's amount — and adds both a depth camera and a fingerprint reader. Keeping things affordable, its front camera is 5 megapixel, it has 2 GB of RAM, and it uses a micro-USB charging connector. It does, however, have water-repellent coating, 3.5mm headset jack, and a memory card slot. It will be available unlocked for $150, and later sold by Verizon Prepaid, T-Mobile, Metro, US Cellular, and Xfinity Mobile. There are two variants with different network support: The version for Verizon supports fewer LTE bands, but, oddly, full support for AT&T's LTE network is only found on Verizon's version.
  • Moto g fast: The $200 Moto g fast is a more-affordable cousin to the recently-announced Moto g power (2020) and Moto g stylus. Like those models, it has a 6.4-inch display with a corner hole punch design, Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, water resistance, a fingerprint reader, and triple rear cameras (including wide and macro). Making it more affordable is the HD+ display resolution, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and an 8 megapixel selfie camera. It has the same 4,000 mAh battery as the Moto g stylus and the same 16 megapixel main camera as the Moto g power. Other features include USB-C, fast charging, 3.5mm audio jack, and a memory card slot. So far, Boost is the only US carrier that has announced plans to carry the Moto g fast.
Both phones will be available unlocked starting June 12th from Best Buy, B&H Photo, Walmart, Amazon.com, and Motorola.com. Pre-orders start today.

T-Mobile Launches New, Cheaper Plans

Mar 23, 2020, 11:52 AM   by Rich Brome

T-Mobile is launching its cheaper T-Mobile Connect plans starting this Wednesday, March 25th, instead of waiting until its merger with Sprint closes, as originally planned. There are two plan options: $15/month (plus tax) for 2 GB of high-speed phone data, or $25/month for 5 GB of high-speed phone data. Both plans include unlimited talk and text, and include access to 5G with a compatible 5G phone. T-Mobile has also promised to automatically add a 1/2 GB of monthly data to each plan, each year for the next five years. The company also introduced new special offers for Metro customers to help them stay connected during the current pandemic. For the next two months, Metro is offering a $15 plan, half the price of the current most affordable plan. For 60 days after customers activate, it's $15/month for unlimited talk and text plus 2 GB of high-speed phone data. Also, new and current Metro customers with any voice line can also get a free 8" tablet with a new $15/month unlimited tablet data plan. Finally, Metro is offering half-off its dedicated mobile hotspot devices, and the $35/month hotspot data plan will include 20 GB — double the normal monthly data — for the next 60 days.

T-Mobile Temporarily Raises Data Caps in Response to COVID-19

Mar 13, 2020, 4:42 PM   by Rich Brome

T-Mobile today announced temporary plan changes to support workers and students operating from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the next 60 days, all T-Mobile and Metro customers will have unlimited and/or increased data allotments. The company is also making international calling free from the US to countries heavily impacted by the virus. All T-Mobile and Metro customers with any kind of data plan will have unlimited smartphone data for the next 60 days. Those same customers will also soon have an additional 20 GB of mobile hotspot data. Lifeline program participants on the T-Mobile network will receive an extra 5 GB of data per month during this period. The company is also increasing the data allowance for schools and students using the EmpowerED digital learning program. While T-Mobile stores will remain open, customers who are quarantined — or who prefer to avoid the stores out of caution — can take advantage of free two-day shipping for the next 60 days.

Motorola has unveiled two new g-series phones for 2020: the Moto g Stylus and Moto g Power. The two phones are very similar, except the g Stylus has a built-in stylus pen and higher-end main camera, while the g Power has a larger battery. Both phones have a 6.4-inch full-HD+ display with a "hole punch" in the corner for the 16-megapixel selfie camera. Both are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip paired with 4 GB of RAM and running Android 10. Both have a water-repellent design, stereo speakers, dual-band Wi-Fi, fingerprint reader, memory card slot, USB-C, 10W fast charging, 3.5mm headphone jack, and FM radio. Both have excellent support for all US 4G networks — including bands 13, 14, 25, 26, 29, 30, 41, 66, and 71 — with LTE Cat. 13 speeds. Motorola also has a new feature that limits interruptions while gaming. The few differences between the phones are:

  • Moto g Stylus: Has a built-in stylus pen designed to help you edit photos, jot down notes, sketch artwork, copy and paste text, and mark up screenshots. Removing the stylus while the phone is idle will automatically start the new Moto Note app, which lets you take quick notes without unlocking the phone. It has a 4,000 mAh battery and 128 GB of storage. The main camera has a 48-megapixel sensor and f/1.7 aperture, with laser auto-focus. It also has a 2-megapixel macro camera and 16-megapixel "action" camera that takes ultra-wide video in landscape orientation while holding the phone vertically. The Moto g Stylus will be available unlocked "this spring" for $300, and subsequently at Verizon, Metro, and Republic.
  • Moto g Power: Has an extra-large 5,000 mAh battery that Motorola claims can power the phone for three days. It also has three rear cameras, but the main camera is 16 megapixel (f/1.7) and the wide-angle camera is 8-megapixel with standard orientation. Like the g Stylus, it has a 2-megapixel macro camera that can focus on objects just 2cm from the lens. It has 64 GB of storage. The Moto g Power will be available unlocked "this spring" for $250, and subsequently at Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, US Cellular, Consumer Cellular, and Republic.

T-Mobile, AT&T Connect on STIR/SHAKEN

Aug 14, 2019, 10:00 AM   by Rich Brome

T-Mobile and AT&T can now securely confirm caller-ID info between the two networks, an important step in fighting number spoofing widely used by robocallers. Both companies have now implemented the STIR/SHAKEN protocol between their networks, allowing caller-ID info to be authenticated, resulting in a "Caller Verified" banner on the phone screen when a call is incoming. T-Mobile and Metro currently offer 12 phones from Samsung and LG that support this banner. The FCC has urged US telecom companies — under threat of new regulation — to implement STIR/SHAKEN as a means of combatting robocalling and fraud. Once adoption is widespread, consumers will be able to block calls that cannot be authenticated. Verizon has announced that it is also working to implement STIR/SHAKEN.

Motorola today announced the Moto e6, a $150 Android phone with a 13-megapixel main camera and portrait mode, in a new design that drops the iconic Motorola look in favor of something more like an iPhone. The display offers HD+ resolution. The processor has been updated to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435, which Motorola claims is 50% faster than last year's 425 chip. The Coolpad Legacy indeed has a massive, sharp display, plus a few nice extras like a huge battery, USB-C, and a fingerprint reader. It also has a design with a little personality, carved from metal and Gorilla Glass. That's pretty good for just $130. But what's it like in person? We checked it out.

Justice Department Leaning Against Merger of Sprint and T-Mobile

Apr 16, 2019, 5:06 PM   by Rich Brome

Justice department staff reviewing the proposed merger between T-Mobile US and Sprint have informed the two companies that they're disinclined to approve the merger as currently proposed, on antitrust grounds, according to the Wall Street Journal. The $26 billion deal would reduce competition and likely lead to lost jobs in the long run, although T-Mobile and Sprint claim otherwise. T-Mobile and Sprint could propose alterations to the deal to win approval. Also, senior Justice Department officials could override the staff recommendation and approve the deal as-is, although several state attorneys general are preparing to sue on antitrust grounds if that happens. A final decision from the Justice Department is expected in a few weeks, and T-Mobile and Sprint are still aiming to wrap up the deal by the end of July.

US Gov't Indicts Huawei for Stealing Trade Secrets from T-Mobile

Jan 28, 2019, 5:55 PM   by Rich Brome   updated Jan 29, 2019, 12:23 AM

The US government is pursuing a criminal case against Huawei for stealing the design for — as well as actual parts and software from — a unique phone-testing robot developed by T-Mobile USA. The gov't alleges that Huawei offered bonuses for employees to steal such trade secrets, and obstructed justice in a related civil case. A Seattle grand jury returned a 10-count indictment for theft of trade secrets conspiracy, attempted theft of trade secrets, seven counts of wire fraud, and one count of obstruction of justice. The robot in question is called "Tappy" and simulates human fingers activating a set of actions on a phone being tested. The theft occurred in 2012 and 2013. T-Mobile pursued a civil case against Huawei in 2014, and in 2017 a jury awarded T-Mobile $4.8 for Huawei's breach of contract. In the civil case, T-Mobile alleged that Huawei employees authorized to use Tappy snuck another, unauthorized Huawei employee into T-Mobile's labs to photograph Tappy. A Huawei employee also stole one of Tappy's "fingers" and copied some of its software. T-Mobile provided surveillance photos to back its claims, and Huawei admitted to several of the allegations. Under the maximum sentencing provisions applicable to corporate entities, Conspiracy and Attempt to Commit Trade Secret Theft are punishable by a fine of up to $5,000,000 or three times the value of the stolen trade secret, whichever is greater. Wire Fraud and Obstruction of Justice are punishable by a fine of up to $500,000.

T-Mobile Insists It Didn't Fudge Its Coverage Map

Dec 19, 2018, 12:54 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

T-Mobile went on the defense this week after being accused by the Rural Wireless Association (RWA) of misstating coverage. The RWA alleged that T-Mobile overstated where it provides coverage in rural areas. This is harmful because if the federal government believes an area is properly covered, it won't provide additional funds to cover it. "Contrary to RWA's claim that T-Mobile submitted 'future' coverage, T-Mobile followed required procedures and submitted shapefiles reflecting 4G LTE coverage as of December 2017," said the company in a letter to the FCC. "Rather than overstating T-Mobile coverage, the submitted files more likely understate coverage as T-Mobile continued to expand its network throughout the challenge process," claimed the company. "RWA's misrepresentations are part of an ongoing pattern of baseless allegations by the organization against T-Mobile designed to delay or thwart competition in rural America and deprive rural Americans of meaningful choice for broadband services," said T-Mobile. The RWA made its claims against T-Mobile (and Verizon) just before the FCC announced an investigation into rule-breaking amidst the major carriers for overstating coverage. The Un-carrier insists it is not under investigation by the FCC for inaccurate maps.

T-Mobile Switches On iPhone eSIM Support

Dec 17, 2018, 2:00 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

T-Mobile today said owners of the Apple iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max can now take advantage of the embedded eSIM. T-Mobile is allowing unlocked variants of these iPhones to access prepaid T-Mobile service as a secondary line. In order to do so, people will need to download the (free) T-Mobile eSIM app from the iTunes App Store and use it to initiate prepaid service. T-Mobile says its support of the iPhone eSIM is intended for those who travel to the U.S., for existing T-Mobile customers who need a secondary line on their device, and for those who wish to take T-Mobile’s service for a spin before making a longer commitment. T-Mobile will continue to require physical SIM cards for primary lines and family plans. AT&T and Verizon's method for activating the eSIM requires users to visit a store or use a scannable QR code sent via the carrier. Sprint is not likely to support the eSIM until 2019.

Dec 6, 2018, 7:01 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

T-Mobile hopes to offer support for the newer iPhones' eSIM by the end of the year, according to a report from PCMag. The carrier is distributing training materials concerning its eSIM app to staff this week. T-Mobile will allow iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr owners to sign up for prepaid T-Mobile service on the eSIM using this new app. T-Mobile will continue to require physical SIM cards for primary lines and family plans. AT&T and Verizon's method for activating the eSIM requires users to visit a store or use a scannable QR code sent via the carrier. AT&T began allowing the eSIM today, and Verizon is expected to support the eSIM tomorrow. The eSIM is already supported by GigSky and Truphone. Sprint is not likely to support the eSIM until 2019.

Project Fi Earns a New Name, Opens Up to More Phones

Nov 28, 2018, 11:25 AM   by Eric M. Zeman   updated Nov 28, 2018, 11:50 AM

Google today renamed its MVNO, Project Fi, to Google Fi. Along with the name change comes dramatically expanded compatibility with phones. Moving forward, the service will work with most Android phones as well as the Apple iPhone. The process of activating Fi on Android devices will be straightforward. Google says compatibility with iPhones is in beta and will require people to jump through a few more hoops, including the use of an iOS app. Basic service will be available to the majority of devices. Fi operates on T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and WiFi, dynamically jumping to the strongest connection. Subscribers will need specific phones, listed on the Fi web site, to get this benefit, as proper LTE support is required. Google recently added VPN protection to Fi. The base service costs $20 per month for unlimited voice and text. Google charges $10 per gigabyte of data. People interested in the service will need to order SIM cards from the Google Fi web site. The service does not require contracts.

T-Mobile's Mobile TV Service Waiting On 5G for Launch

Oct 31, 2018, 7:49 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

T-Mobile is still hyping its forthcoming TV service, though its plans don't appear to be coming together as quickly as the company initially promised. During the company's recent earnings call with press, T-Mobile's Mike Sievert said when the TV service launches later this year, it won't be mobile. Instead, T-Mobile will offer some sort of fixed, in-home TV service. The mobile TV offering won't become a reality until next year. "We have our heads down creating the first TV service for the 5G era," said Sievert. "The journey will start later this year. We're very excited about that. And the second phase of the journey, next year, will be expanding into mobile. Because 5G is about mobility, not just fixed." Sievert went on to say the offering will include hundreds of high definition channels without the need for a cable box. All this will be based on the technology it gained when it purchased Layer3 TV. Layer3 already offers TV service in four markets in the U.S., though it is a more traditional, in-home service offering. T-Mobile hasn't said exactly when either TV service, in-home or mobile, will truly launch. The in-home service was initially expected to arrive in November. T-Mobile's 5G network won't get off the ground until some point during the first half of next year, so the mobile TV service will wait at least that long.

Best Metro by T-Mobile phones to buy in 2021

As you can probably tell from the name, Metro is one of the MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) carriers that uses T-Mobile's network for its services. What's more, Metro is owned by T-Mobile, which may or may not give it a slight advantage over other carriers that pay for access to the Magenta network.
If you're considering a phone from Metro by T-Mobile, it's probably because you want to rein on your mobile-related expenses. And the carrier's planswill certainly help with that. But saving money doesn't mean you have to settle for a bad phone. Metro's lineup of devices covers everything from feature phones to Apple's $1,000+ flagships, though you wouldn't find the very best Android phones.

To help you get your bearings quicker and find the right phone among the tens of devices Metro by T-Mobile offers, we've selected the best phones in a few important categories.

But enough talking, let's look at the winners and what makes them stand out.

Best Metro by T-Mobile phones, a summarized list:

Best overall value iPhone at Metro by T-Mobile

Apple iPhone 12

iPhone 12

This year, Apple fixed the biggest drawback of its non-Pro phones and gave them high-resolution OLED displays as well. This narrowed the gap between Pro and non-Pro significantly, making the iPhone 12 a great pickup for those in the Apple ecosystem. Unfortunately, the base model still comes with 64GB of storage, which is a shame. Still, with the new 5nm A14 chip and 5G connectivity thanks to Qualcomm's modem, the iPhone 12 is faster than ever. If you're using an iPhone older than the iPhone 11, the upgrade will be well worth it.

Read our full review of the iPhone 12 here.

Best value Android phone at Metro by T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

Galaxy S20 FE

This wasn't a hard title for the Galaxy S20 FE to win. It shares most of its DNA with the premium Galaxy S20 phones but costs a few hundred dollars less. Sure, it's plastic and doesn't have a curved-edge display, but that are hardly big sacrifices to make. It still has the fast chip, the high-refresh rate display and the triple-camera setup. And, of course, 5G as well. With the S20 FE, Samsung hits the sweet spot. Needless to say, it's one of the most popular Android phones among carriers right now.

Best affordable phone at Metro by T-Mobile

Apple iPhone SE

iPhone SE

The new iPhone SE is probably the most talked-about phone for the first half of 2020, and for good reason. Apple put its top chip in the body of the iPhone 8 and priced it very aggressively, that's a sure way to get attention. The iPhone SE is an awesome choice if you want to get your kid or parent into the Apple ecosystem and include them in your Apple accounts' family plans. Or maybe you want a secondary phone with iOS for yourself? Either way, go for it and you won't regret it!

Feel free to check out our full Apple iPhone SE review here.

Best budget 5G phone at Metro by T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G

Samsung Galaxy A52

The new Galaxy A52 builds upon the strong foundation established by the A-series so far, and it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that the new device is one of the best value for money devices available on Android's camp. Despite being a plastic device, the Galaxy A52 comes with a large 6.5-inch AMOLED display with fast 90Hz refresh rate, triple camera with optical image stabilization, a microSD card slot along with a 3.5mm audio jack, large 4,500mAh battery with fast charging, and lots of RAM and storage. Overall, excellent value.

We recently reviewed the Galaxy A52 5G, the review is available right here.

Best budget phone at Metro by T-Mobile

Motorola Moto G Stylus

Moto G Stylus

The Moto G Stylus was a surprising new addition to the Moto G family. As you can probably guess, its outstanding feature is the included stylus. That puts it right against LG's Stylo 5 and 6, both of which are also available on Metro. The Moto G Stylus has cleaner software, more RAM and storage, and looks better as well. True to the Moto brand, it's a budget phone that punches way above its weight.

Best Metro by T-Mobile phones

The best Metro by T-Mobile phones give you access to a great cell service without necessarily breaking the bank. In fact, our LTE network testing has confirmed as much. You also get excellent coverage nationwide.

Metro's performance is comparable to parent network T-Mobile's, making Metro the best performing prepaid carrier we tested. And the fact that you can get a lot of data for just $40 a month (with taxes and fees included) makes Metro our favorite discount carrier, too.

Many of the same phones offered by the likes of T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon are available through Metro by T-Mobile. And some of those happen to be the best phones you can buy right now, like the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. You can also expect top upcoming models like the Galaxy S21 to be offered at Metro as well.

Metro customers have the freedom to go with low-cost handsets or flagship devices, and you can even bring your own compatible phone so long as you don't mind paying out of pocket without carrier subsidies. Here are the best phones Metro offers right now.

What are the best Metro by T-Mobile phones?

Many of the devices on our list of the best Metro by T-Mobile phones may look familiar because they're also some of the best phones out there, period.

That includes everything from relatively more premium handsets, like the iPhone 12 Pro Max, to more affordable ones, like the long-lasting Moto G Stylus, feature-rich Samsung Galaxy A51 and giant-killing iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE from last year is indeed our top pick if you're looking for a new high-performance phone from the discount carrier, but don't mind sacrificing a massive OLED display for a more reasonable price. You can also get the OnePlus Nord N200 5G, if you want a 5G-capable phone without having to spend big bucks.

On the other end of the spectrum is one of the priciest devices Metro offers — the iPhone 12 Pro Max — which joins other phones capable of connecting to Metro's 5G network.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are not available from Metro, though the old Note 10 Plus 5G was offered through the discount carrier until late last year. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE ended up replacing the Galaxy S20 on the prepaid carrier.

Of course, you don't have to purchase a phone from Metro at all if you don't wish to; being a GSM-based carrier on T-Mobile's network, Metro supports unlocked phones from every manufacturer, allowing you to bring your own device if you like. However, Metro also offers opportunities to save on certain models in its store if you switch from another carrier and port your number over in the process — so it's worth it to give the following phones a look.

The best Metro by T-Mobile phones

1. iPhone SE 2020

The best mix of performance and price

Specifications

Display: 4.7-inch LCD (1334x750)

CPU: A13 Bionic

RAM: 3GB

Storage / Expandable: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB / No

Rear camera: 12MP (ƒ/1.8)

Front camera: 7MP (ƒ/2.2)

Weight: 5.22 ounces

Reasons to buy

+Very affordable+Fast A13 Bionic performance+Supports wireless charging

Reasons to avoid

-Big bezels-No camera night mode

The iPhone SE is now the cheapest iPhone Apple offers, and it packs stellar performance for a very easy-to-stomach $399 price. Buyers receive an A13 Bionic CPU — the very same one inside the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro — as well as an updated 12-megapixel camera system that benefits from the company's latest computational photography tricks. (Well, except for Night Mode.)

The iPhone SE surely doesn't have the best battery life of any iPhone, given its relatively tiny battery. You'll probably want to spend an extra $50 and upgrade to 128GB of storage as well, if you can. But for the price, the SE's premium features — like wireless charging and water resistance — make it well worth a look for Metro by T-Mobile customers.

As of this writing, Metro is offering the 64GB iPhone SE for just $49 for new customers switching from other carriers. The discount will be distributed in the form of rebates, and after 6 months of service and payment with auto pay enabled on the account.

2. OnePlus Nord N200 5G

A great budget 5G option at Metro

Specifications

Display: 6.49-inch IPS LCD (2400 x 1080)

CPU: Snapdragon 480 5G

RAM: 4GB

Storage / Expandable: 64GB / Yes

Rear camera: 13MP (f/2.2), 2MP (f/2.4) macro. 2MP (f/2.4) depth

Front camera: 16MP (f/2.1)

Weight: 6.67 ounces

Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 10:28 (90Hz), 10:36 (60Hz)

Reasons to buy

+Excellent value+Nice display with a 90Hz refresh rate+Good battery life

Reasons to avoid

-Mediocre performance-Subpar cameras

The OnePlus Nord N200 5G is a reminder that 5G phones don't have to break the bank. Normally $239 — a shockingly low price for a device that can connect with T-Mobile's 5G network — the OnePlus Nord N200 5G can be yours for free when you switch your service to Metro by T-Mobile.

Opt for this phone, and you can expect long battery life — about ten and a half hours on our test. The cameras perform okay in daylight, though we found the macro and monochrome lenses to be unnecessary additions. And you also get a 6,49-inch 90Hz LCD on the Nord N200 5G. There are definitely compromises, but this is the best 5G value on Metro.

3. iPhone 12 Pro Max

Another slam dunk from Apple

Specifications

Display: 6.7-inch OLED (2778x1284)

CPU: A14 Bionic

RAM: 6GB

Storage / Expandable: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB / No

Rear camera: 12MP wide (f/1.6), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4), 12MP 2.5X telephoto (f/2.2)

Front camera: 12MP TrueDepth (f/2.2)

Weight: 8.03 ounces

Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 10:53

Reasons to buy

+Best-in-class cameras+Excellent battery life+Immersive 6.7-inch display+Superior performance

Reasons to avoid

-A bit heavy and bulky

Apple’s latest and greatest smartphone, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, wowed people everywhere with just how impressive it is. It’s big, it’s beautiful, and it does everything you could possibly want it to do. Everything from the cameras to the display will knock your socks off. Battery life is stellar and the performance is incredibly impressive.

It also sports Apple’s new MagSafe system, which made its first appearance on the iPhone 12 series. If anything, the biggest complaint you could leverage against the iPhone 12 Pro Max is its sheer size, which some might find bulky and unwieldy. Otherwise, you have a very good device here and it’s by far one of the best devices that Metro has to offer.

4. iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 Pro's best features for less

Specifications

Display: 6.1-inch LCD (1792x828)

CPU: A13 Bionic

RAM: Unknown

Storage / Expandable: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB / No

Rear camera: 12MP wide (ƒ/1.8); 12MP ultrawide (ƒ/2.4)

Front camera: 12MP (ƒ/2.2)

Weight: 6.84 ounces

Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 11:20

Reasons to buy

+Fast A13 Bionic CPU+Long battery life+Colorful and durable design

Reasons to avoid

-Fast charger not included-Just 64GB of storage to start

Apple should be commended for building many of the iPhone 11 Pro's headline features into the 6.1-inch iPhone 11, one of the best Metro by T-Mobile phones the carrier offers. This phone has seen its price drop to $599, even though it offers a powerful A13 Bionic chipset, two rear cameras and the finest battery life of Apple's iPhone 11 family. Metro cuts the price even further for people switching from another carrier.

iPhone 11 buyers still get Face ID authentication for their troubles, as well as support for wireless charging and IP68 water resistance. It's really all the iPhone anyone needs at a great price.

5. Samsung Galaxy 20 FE

Samsung’s killer value

Specifications

Display: 6.5-inch OLED (2400x1080)

CPU: Snapdragon 865

RAM: 6GB

Storage / Expandable: 128GB / Yes

Rear camera: 12MP main (ƒ/1.8), 12MP ultrawide (ƒ/2.2), 8MP 3X telephoto (ƒ/2.4)

Front camera: 32MP (ƒ/2.2)

Weight: 6.7 ounces

Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 9:03

Reasons to buy

+Big 120Hz display+Powerful triple-camera system+Solid performance+Affordable price

Reasons to avoid

-Battery life bit shorter than expected

Samsung bucked its own super expensive smartphone trend with the Galaxy S20 FE, a so-called “affordable flagship.” It offered much of what people loved about the S20 in a plastic body and a few hundred bucks knocked off the asking price. It also sports 5G, meaning you can take advantage of Metro's next-generation network.

You get a beautiful 6.5-inch 120Hz display, the Snapdragon 865 CPU, a microSD card slot, and great camera performance with the triple lens setup. One complaint is that the battery life doesn't quite live up to expectations, but it's not bad. The plastic body doesn’t feel as premium as the original S20, nor is the included charger as quick, but these compromises are more than acceptable given what you get for your money.

Read our full Galaxy S20 FE review.

6. Samsung Galaxy A52 5G

A fair 5G alternative to the Galaxy S20

Specifications

Display Size: 6.5-inch AMOLED (2400x1080)

CPU: Snapdragon 750G

RAM: 6GB

Storage / Expandable: 128GB / Yes

Rear camera: 64MP main (f/1.8), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2), 5MP macro (f/2.2), 5MP depth sensor (f/2.2)

Front camera: 32MP (ƒ/2.2)

Weight: 6.7 ounces

Battery Life (Hrs:Mins): TBA

Reasons to buy

+Excellent 120 Hz display+Sleek design+128GB of storage

Reasons to avoid

-Underwhelming cameras-Easily scratched display

Metro added the Samsung Galaxy A52 to its repertoire, and what makes its version of the A52 particularly interesting is that it can connect to 5G networks.

The Galaxy A52 is a sleek enough device with a dazzling 6.5-inch AMOLED display. However, its quad-camera system disappoints compared to the single-lens modules in the Google Pixel 4a and iPhone SE, both of which cost far less than the A52 5G (though Google's phone is not sold through Metro).

If you're after a 5G-compatible handset but don't want to spend top dollar on the Galaxy S21, the A52 5G is a respectable alternative — so long as you're aware of the tradeoffs you'll make.

Read our full Samsung Galaxy A52 review.

7. Moto G Stylus

A well-rounded budget phablet

Specifications

Display: 6.4-inch LCD (2300x1080)

CPU: Snapdragon 665

RAM: 4GB

Storage / Expandable: 128GB / Yes

Rear camera: 48MP main (ƒ/1.7); 2MP macro (ƒ/2.2); 16MP Action Cam (ƒ/2.2)

Front camera: 16MP (ƒ/2.0)

Weight: 6.8 ounces

Battery Life (Hrs:Mins): 12:13

Reasons to buy

+Handy stylus for note-taking+Decent photos and performance for the price+Long-lasting battery

Reasons to avoid

-Screen isn’t very colorful-Night mode isn’t great

The Moto G Stylus isn't quite our favorite budget Android phone — that honor actually goes to either last year's Moto G Power or the newer Moto G Power (2021), both of which last much longer on a charge. However, the Moto G Stylus' longevity still isn't anything to sneeze at. At 12 hours and 13 minutes, the Moto G Stylus still ranks on our list of the best phone battery life.

But, of course, a phone like the Moto G Stylus is about more than battery life. The Snapdragon 665 CPU inside this $299 handset offers solid overall performance. And with 128GB of built-in storage, you won't need to spring for a microSD card — though you certainly can put one in the phone if you wish. Rounding out the feature set is, of course, that handy stylus, which assist with productivity and note taking, and separates Moto's handset from other similarly-price models.

Right now, Metro is selling the Moto G Stylus for just $239. That's $60 off the regular price of the device unlocked, meaning you can expect significant savings by choosing to go with the discount prepaid network.

Read our full Moto G Stylus review.

How to choose the best Metro by T-Mobile phone for you

While we regularly update our best Metro by T-Mobile phones page with the carrier's most compelling deals, you'll want to check the network's smartphones store page for the latest and greatest offers — especially if you're interested in switching from a rival carrier. Metro, like all wireless providers, offers the best discounts for new customers who bring their numbers over with them.

Otherwise, Metro offers a complete range of devices across all prices, so prospective buyers should consider those most critical smartphone features — like battery life, performance and camera quality — when choosing a new handset. Cheaper models, like the Galaxy A20 and Moto G7 Power, tend to prioritize battery life above those other factors. In other words, if longevity on a charge is all you need, you could be in an ideal position to save.

However, if premium specs, design and a great camera are really important to you, it's a better idea to look to one of the iPhones or Samsung Galaxy S devices on this list. They are more expensive, but their capabilities far outshine those of the less-expensive models Metro offers. They'll also likely last you a few more years and are sure to be supported with more frequent software updates going forward.

How we test smartphones

Smartphones that make any of our best phones lists need to excel on several tests that we run on every handset. We perform some of these tests in our labs and some in the real world.

When it comes to performance, we rely on such synthetic benchmarks as Geekbench 5 and GFXBench to measure graphics performance. These tests allow us to compare performance across iPhones and Android devices. We also run a real-world video transcoding test on each phone using the Adobe Premiere Rush app and time the result.

To measure the quality of a phone's display, we perform lab tests to determine the brightness of the panel (in nits), as well as how colorful each screen is (DCI-P3 color gamut). In these cases, higher numbers are better. We also measure color accuracy of each panel with a Delta-E rating, where lower numbers are better and score of 0 is perfect.

One of the most important tests we run is the Tom's Guide battery test. We run a web surfing test over 5G or 4G at 150 nits of screen brightness until the battery gives out. In general, a phone that lasts 10 hours or more is good, and anything above 11 hours makes our list of the best phone battery life.

Last but not least, we take the best phones out in the field to take photos outdoors, indoors and at night in low light to see how they perform versus their closest competitors. We take shots of landscapes, food, portraits and more, and also allow you to be the judge with side-by-side comparisons in our reviews.

Metro PCS Phones Coming Soon

Metro Rumors is the ultimate source for news, new Metro PCS Phones coming soon, metro pcs service news, special promotions, and more.

MetroPCS may not be in as large as AT&T, Sprint, or even Verizon but this regional carrier seems to be steadily growing in the past couple of years. They are attracting more customers by the day and just based on the road map leaked out of sources, it seems that there is plenty more that this company may offer by the end of this year. We have not yet seen everything for 2012, there are Metro PCS phones coming soon.

Metro PCS Coming Soon

According to the sources, there are at least eight new smartphones to be added to its portfolio for 2012. Moreover, judging by the impressive list it seems that the Galaxy S3 will definitely be up for sale. This phone has already been notched up by the five big carriers but it shall recently be launching with MetroPCS before December and after September. While the exact dates are vague there is sufficient news for users of this carrier service to get hyper about.

Other than the Samsung Galaxy S3 there were two more Samsung devices, Huawei devices, one LG, a coolpad, and one ZTE fighting it out for top glory. All of these sets are supposed to release at the same time. However, the 4G Samsung Galaxy S lightray is one of the first to be released with its date being fixed as August 8.

So this one is already in the markets at present. It comes with 1.3 Ghz dual core processor, 8 MP rear facing and a front facing 1.3 MP camera operating on 2.3 Gingerbread OS. It too shall feature a Super Amoled screen.

In the two weeks after the launch of Lightray expect the Quattro 4G to hit the market. This is a device that seldom few would have seen and its images are already on the net. It shall feature a 1GHz processor with 512 MB internal storage, using a 4 inch WVGA display and 3 MP camera.

It seems that August 29 will be a very crowded date for MetroPCS considering that the LG Motion and the ZTE Anthem shall be hitting the market simultaneously. While the Motion did make an appearance online with its S4 processor, qHD screen, Ice Cream Sandwich and 5 MP camera, it is the Anthem that is hugely anticipated because of its larger display.  Metro PCS comings soon to a store near you.

Pinnacle 2 and the Contour 2 from Huawei and Samsung should be coming near September end though there is nothing more to add here. Both are going to be rehashed makes of previous mobiles hence expect them to be low key. At most expect the 2.3 Gingerbread to be fed into them with already existing features in the market.

Only the Huawei Verge is uncertain of a release date with an approximate date hard to define. However, it seems that this phone shall be launching right before the S3 hits markets. Hence, expect it before end of November. While all details of the phone are being kept secretive, it will hopefully be a surprise package like the ZTE.

These were the Metro PCS phones coming soon in 2012. Are there any devices that caught your attention or made your head turn. Do you think that one of these mobiles shall actually win the battle and become hugely popular or maybe the S3 shall also rule here.
