What Kind of Battery Do I Need for a Yard-Man Lawn Mower?

When the battery on your Yard-Man mower bites the dust, you're pretty much out of commission until you replace it with a new one. Shopping for the right battery that meets the requirements of your particular model of mower, however, isn't always easy. Unless you choose the right one, you may be spending your money on a battery that's no more useful to you than the dead one you have right now.
Mower Models
Before you waste valuable time searching for the correct battery, realize that not all Yard-Man mowers require a battery. For example, gas-powered push mowers and self-propelled models, both of the walk-behind variety, run without the need for help from a battery. On the other hand, riding mowers, lawn tractors and zero-turn models require the power that a battery provides. Yard-Man doesn't manufacture or sell cordless models that require the assistance of a battery to run without the benefit of gas or electricity.
12-volt Batteries
The majority of Yard-Man riding mowers all use the same type of battery -- a rechargeable 12-volt version. Even when a mower battery is a 12-volt, however, you simply can't assume that it will fit correctly into your mower. Twelve-volt batteries come in a variety of shapes and sizes. If all else fails, measure the dimensions of the battery that's already in the machine or take the old battery along with you to the store when you shop for the new one.
Lithium Batteries
As more and more products utilize the power of lithium primary batteries instead of the standard versions that have been in use for decades, some newer models of Yard-Man mowers have followed suit. A lithium primary battery is not rechargeable, but has the benefit of being lighter in weight and longer-lasting than other types of batteries. While the initial investment of purchasing a lithium battery is more than what you'd spend on other types, the extended life of a lithium battery justifies the extra expense.
Battery Requirements
The best way to ensure that you select the right battery for your mower is to consult the owner's manual that came with the mower. If you're not in possession of the manual, you may be able to obtain a downloadable copy of the mower's manual online by providing the model number and serial number on the Internet. Examine the battery to see if you can identify the type or model number. You can also call the Yard-Man customer support line and speak to a representative who can help you select the correct battery for your mower. While Yard-Man, or MTD Products, the company that manufactures Yard-Man mowers, may suggest that a Yard-Man battery is best, any battery that meets the mower's specifications can be used in their products.

Battery Voltage - Riding Mower
All of the batteries on our riding mowers operate at a nominal 12 volts.
It is recommended to fully charge the battery before the first use as well as anytime the battery is not used for longer than 30 days.
During down time a battery can lose power. Although our riding mowers do have self-charging systems, the battery will discharge during down time. This may cause a shortened life for the battery.
Charge the battery between 2 to 6 amps per hour. Do not charge any battery at more than 6 amps per hour.
If you have a battery with removable battery caps, you can use a hydrometer to test the battery acid. The hydrometer should read a minimum of 1.260 before putting the battery back into service.
Take special care of the battery during any down time that is expected to last for more than a month.
- During winter be sure to remove the battery and store it in a warm dry location.
- Charge the battery before storing and before putting it back into service.
- Consider charging the battery regularly, should this storage period last longer than 30 days.

Need help buying a replacement battery for a Yard Machine Riding Mower
I own a Yard Machine Riding mower (by MTD) and I need a new battery.

I would love to pick one up at my local tractor store or even a local Walmart.
But, I'm confused as to how to know which battery to buy.
I found the following on an MTD parts site.
