I’ve been using my Fire TV stick for a while but one day the sound on my Netflix stopped working. I got to the bottom of the problem by trying a bunch of different things and doing a lot of research, and here’s how to get it working again.

As a general rule, the easiest and best thing to try first is to restart the Fire TV stick device. Start from the Fire TV stick home screen, and then select ‘Settings’ that is one of the options at the top of the screen. After that select My Fire TV > System/device > Restart.

There are a few additional things to try to get it working again if that doesn’t work. And below, I’ll explain exactly how to do each of them so that Netflix works as it should on your Fire TV stick.

An issue I got was that when I played a movie or TV show all I got was a blank screen. I looked into the official help documents about using Netflix with a Firestick to see how to fix this issue. Here’s what I found.

Attempt to play a different TV show or movie. Verify if it now displays video output. If it is a specific TV show or movie that does not display video, then report the issue to Netflix. However if the problem remains then the Fire TV stick device should be restarted.

  5. Then press the button on your Fire TV stick remote that has three horizontal lines.
  6. That brings up a menu with some options.
  7. One of them is uninstall – select that and it will uninstall Netflix from your Fire TV stick.

After that you need to reinstall the Netflix app. From the home screen navigate to ‘Apps’ at the top of the screen from there find in the list of apps. You can also search for Netflix by selecting the magnifying glass icon.

Netflix streaming performance may improve if you close browser tabs, applications and programs that may be taking up your computer's memory and processing resources.

Enable Loudness Equalization

  1. From the desktop, right-click on the speaker icon on the taskbar.

  2. Select Playback Device.

  3. On the Playback tab, click the Default Device (indicated by a green circle with a check mark inside).

  4. Click Properties.

  5. Select the Enhancements tab.

  6. Check the box for Loudness Equalization.

  7. Make sure Disable all enhancements is unchecked.

  8. Click OK to close Speakers Properties, then click OK.

  9. Try Netflix again.

Note:

The Enhancements tab may not be available on all computers. If you do not see the Enhancements tab, your audio drivers or sound card may not support this feature.

If you use security software

These steps are intended for advanced computer users.

  • Install any updates for your security software.

  • Temporarily turn off your security software and try Netflix again.

    • If the problem is fixed when your security software is disabled, the software may be out of date or unintentionally interfering with Netflix. Re-activate it, then contact the software manufacturer for help.

If this does not resolve the issue, or if you're not currently using HDMI to connect to your TV or home theater system, you may want to manually set the audio settings on your PlayStation 3.

Enable 5.1 surround sound

  1. From the PlayStation home screen, navigate to Settings.

  3. Select Audio Output Settings.

  4. Highlight the cable type you are currently using to connect your PlayStation 3 to your TV or home theater system and press X.

  5. Make sure Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch. is checked.

  6. Make sure Dolby Digital Plus is unchecked.

  7. Press the Right arrow.

  8. Press OK if prompted.

  9. Press X to save the settings.

  10. Try Netflix again.

Enable stereo sound

  1. From the PlayStation home screen, navigate to Settings.

  2. Navigate to Sound Settings.

  3. Select Audio Output Settings.

  5. Make sure only Linear PCM 2. CH 44.1 kHz and Linear PCM 2. Ch 48 kHz are checked.

  6. Make sure Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are unchecked.

  7. Press the Right arrow.

  8. Press OK if prompted.

  9. Press X to save the settings.

  10. Try Netflix again.

Depending on your home surround sound setup, you will enable either 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. This option is only available with an HDMI connection.

  1. From the Xbox home screen, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Display & Sound.

  4. Select Audio output.

  5. Select HDMI audio.

  6. Change the option in the drop-down menu to either 5.1 Uncompressed or 7.1 Uncompressed.

  7. Try Netflix again

    • If you still have no sound, repeat the steps above, choosing the other option in Step 6 before you continue troubleshooting below.

Enable stereo sound

  1. From the Xbox home screen, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.

  2. Select Settings.

  5. Select either HDMI audio or Optical audio, depending on the type of cable you use to connect your console to your audio receiver or TV.

Troubleshoot your hardware connection

Netflix might not be playing because of an issue related to digital copy protection. To resolve the issue:

  1. Make sure that you're using an HDMI cable.

  2. Connect your device directly to your TV.

  3. Try reversing the ends of the HDMI cable.

  4. Try a new HDMI cable.

  5. Try another HDMI port on your TV.

  6. If available, try an HDMI port on another TV.

    • If you can stream on another TV, there may be an issue with the HDMI port on the original TV. Contact the TV manufacturer for help.

Troubleshoot your device connections

If you are using an external audio receiver, sound bar, or speakers:

  1. Ensure that your speakers are connected to your receiver properly.

  2. Check any HDMI or optical connectors to ensure that they are plugged in correctly.

  3. Try reversing the ends of the HDMI/optical cable or using an alternate cable.

Change your audio settings

  1. From the Apple TV home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select Audio & Video.

  3. Select Dolby.

  4. Select Auto to enable surround sound.

  1. From the Apple TV home screen, select Settings.

    • If asked, confirm that you want to Change Format.

  5. Select New Format to turn on Dolby Digital 5.1.

  6. Try Netflix again.

If these steps don't work:

  1. Repeat steps 1-4 above.

  2. Change the New Format option from Dolby Digital 5.1 to Stereo.

  3. Try Netflix again.

If you use an assistive listening device

If you use an assistive listening device or voice clarifying headset while watching Netflix, you may need to adjust your streaming device's audio output settings to Stereo or Linear PCM output. For help adjusting these settings, contact the manufacturer of your streaming device.

No Sound Using Netflix. I am trying to watch a movie on Netflix and the audio does not work. There is no sound. Is this an issue with Netflix or an issue with my equipment? If your streaming device is connected directly to the TV you may not be getting sound from Netflix because you are trying to stream in surround sound 5.1 Dolby Digital.

ALL NETFLIX STREAMING DEVICES CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO TV:

Some movies or TV shows streamed from Netflix do not stream the proper audio output for the audio selection you are using, therfore you cannot hear the sound. You will need to go into the audio settings of the device you are using and change the surround sound to anything but 5.1 Dolby Digital. Try using a non 5.1 audio selection. This should fix the issue and Netflix will have sound.

RESET ALL COMPONENTS TO GET SOUND FROM NETFLIX:

If this still does not work, disconnect your modem and router for 30 seconds, reset the device you are using to stream Netflix, and reset or restart your TV. This “refreshing” of all components will sometimes fix the issue and you will get sound from Netflix.

SURROUND SOUND DOES NOT WORK WITH NETFLIX:

If you have surround sound connected to your TV and you hear no sound when streaming Netflix, go into the settings of your surround sound component and change the setting to anything but 5.1. By changing the audio setting to something besides 5.1, you will get sound from Netflix.

APPLE TV HAS NO SOUND WITH NETFLIX:

If you have Apple TV 4 Go to Settings, Audio and Video, Surround Sound, Best Quality Available to turn on the surround sound. If Best Quality Available does not fix the problem, select the Stereo audio setting. This should fix the issue with Neflix not getting sound and you will now be able to hear sound from your Apple device.

PLAYSTATION DOES NOT HAVE SOUND WITH NETFLIX:

Go to the PlayStation home screen, go to Settings, Sound Settings, Audio Output Settings, Highlight the cable you are using to connect the PlayStation to your TV, press X. If you select Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI then press X to save the settings and try Netflix once again. If you have selected HDMI cable, go to Manual, be sure just Linear PCM 2. CH 44.1 kHz & Linear PCM 2, Ch 48 kHz are selected. Be sure Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are not checked. Your Playstation should now play Netflix and the sound will be heard.

This is important information directly from Netflix:
If the movie or TV show you are watching has 5.1 Dolby available, make sure this option is selected within the Audio & Subtitles menu during playback.
Please note that not every episode or season of a 5.1 supported TV show may have 5.1 available.
However, it is supported in the Netflix app for Windows 8 and Windows 10.
To check if your device supports 5.1 audio, go to any Netflix original to see if there is a 5.1 audio option.
If not, your device may not support this feature, or it may need to be turned on.
