Renting a Car at Providence Airport (PVD): Everything you need to know

As you start your descent, you can feel the excitement. Once you deboard, your getaway can begin this great city, as you discover all that it has to offer. With so much to see and do in Providence, you will need a car to check off everything on your list. What better way to get a jump start on your vacation than to get behind the wheel right away? Below is nearly all the info you want to know to ensure your car rental from Providence Airport (PVD) will go off without any issues.

Where do I get the best price on a rental car at the Providence Airport?

CarRentals.com is the place to start making plans your excursion to Providence. If you want to snag the best deal, you need to:

  • Decide what car you'll need for your vacation. Don't rent more car then you need
  • Compare and contrast the rates for a few suppliers on the type of car you want
  • Be aware of any cost for an added driver, fuel policy, and mileage limits. That way you will know the actual cost before you rent your car

How old do I have to be to book a Providence car rental?

The minimum age to rent a vehicle in Providence is 21. Please note there is typically an additional charge if you are under 25. Moreover, if you plan to rent a higher category vehicle (premium, large capacity, SUV, etc.) there may be further age restrictions. Make sure you check the company's policy before you book.

What car rental companies have counters at Providence Airport?

You'll find 10 rental car companies at the Providence Airport. Rent from a supplier like Hertz, U-Save, National, and Budget, plus many more. With around a half-dozen great choices, you are sure to get the rate and the car that you want.

Is insurance required for Providence rental cars?

You are required to have insurance before you rent a car in Providence. You may also buy additional insurance through your supplier, if you are concerned your insurance won't cover your rental during your trip. Many major credit cards (Discover, American Express, Visa, and MasterCard) typically provide some coverage. However, they typically have limitations, such as not covering large vehicles, like trucks or SUVs. It is best to call your credit card company and find out what kind of coverage is offered before you head to Providence. Otherwise, you can add on Collision Damage Coverage through CarRentals.com at checkout if you are a United States citizen.

What forms of identification do I need to bring I pick up my car rental in Providence?

You'll need to present your credit card, as well as your driver's license.

What is the fuel policy on my rental car?

We suggest a ""full-to-full"" policy. You receive the vehicle topped off. But, if you return your rental with less fuel than you began with, the company may charge a premium to top it off. If you want to keep your expenses lower, you should find a filling station before you bring it back.

Will my Providence rental car have unlimited mileage?

Providence has enough to keep you busy, however you may want to drive to nearby areas to check out what else the area has going on. You can explore the rest of the area free of mileage limits when you venture to see what else Rhode Island has to offer.

Is it possible to book one-way at Providence Airport?

Many car rental companies offer one-way rentals in most cases. You may find it easier to return your vehicle at another location. Be aware there may be a supplementary fee when you decide to only go one-way.

Is there a certain vehicle I should rent when I land at Providence Airport (PVD)?

That all depends on your needs and what you will be doing. Compact or economy automobiles are great for short drives and are easier to park. If you are traveling with a bigger group, then a SUV or mid-size vehicle is going to have enough room for all of you and offer a more comfortable ride on longer commutes. Those looking for a little luxury on their Providence trip can choose a higher-end model like a Cadillac or Audi or similar.

Your Providence rental is waiting at the airport

Option 2 -  We Refill. --This option allows the renter to pay Alamo at the end of the rental for gas used but not replaced. Price per gallon will be higher than local fuel prices.

  • Customers who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada

Customers who reside in the U.S., U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued Driver’s license which includes a photograph of the customer.  Digital licenses are not accepted.  The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

Members of the United States Armed Forces who are on active duty may present an expired home state license under the following conditions:

    • They also present an Active Military ID, and

    • They are in compliance with their military extension policy of the state which issued the license.  These policies vary by state and customers are encouraged to check with the appropriate department of motor vehicles for more information.

Customers travelling to the U.S. and Canada from other countries

It is important that customers check with the appropriate Department of Motor Vehicles in the States or Provinces in which they intend to travel to ensure compliance with their various licensing laws.  The following practices are used to ensure the customer is presenting a facially valid license at the time of rental.

Customers traveling to the United States and Canada from another country must present the following:

    • Their home country driver’s license that is valid, unexpired and includes a photograph, and

    • If the home country license is in a language other than English (or French, for rentals in Canada) and the letters are English (i.e. German, Spanish, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes in addition to the home country license.

    • If the home country license is in a language other than English and the letters are not English (i.e.alphabet is not an extended Latin-based alphabet like German or Spanish but is Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is required.

    • If an International Driver’s permit cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted.  In either case the home country license must also be presented.

    • Customers may not rent a vehicle solely with the International Driver’s Permit.  The International Driver’s Permit is a translation of the individual’s home country license and is not considered a license nor is it considered valid identification.

    • In some US locations, customers not holding a US driver’s license may be asked to provide additional documentation.  Examples of this may include a valid passport or, in certain states (AZ, CA, CO, NM, TX) a valid Mexican voter registration card and/or inbound and outbound travel documentation.
    • In some Canadian locations, customers not holding a Canadian driver’s license may be asked to provide additional valid government-issued documentation.  Examples of this may include a valid passport.

    Other requirements

    • Photocopies of Driver’s Licenses are not accepted

    • “Learner’s Permits” are not accepted.

    • Any license which, on its face, restricts the licensee to the use and operation of a vehicle equipped with a form of a breathalyzer apparatus is not accepted.

    • Temporary Driver’s Licenses may be refused if the renting location is unable to otherwise verify the customer’s identity or verify the authenticity of the temporary license.  Additional Government-issued identification may be required.

  • The following forms of payment are accepted at the end of the rental.

    American Express®
    Discover Network®
    Debit Card
    Prepaid Card

Please read the Renter Requirements Policy for details pertaining to deposits and general rental requirements at this location. Additional authorizations from your account will be obtained to cover the cost of the rental charges. Alamo is not responsible for any overdraft fees incurred.

All renters and additional drivers must be 21 or older. All renters must have a valid driver’s license and a major credit card or debit card in their name. Individuals with learners’ or instructional permits are not eligible to rent. This is only a summary. For additional details, please reference the Driver’s License Information Policy.

Renters between the ages of 21 and 24 may rent the following vehicle classes: Economy through Full Size cars, Cargo and Minivans, Pickup Trucks, and Compact, Small and Standard SUVs with seating up to 5 passengers.

At airport locations, debit card deposits are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a ticketed return travel itinerary. The name and address shown on the renter’s driver’s license must match their current home address. Active duty military personnel are exempt from address requirements.

Renters using a debit card may rent the following vehicle classes: Economy through Full Size cars, Cargo and Minivans, Pickup Trucks, and Compact, Small and Standard SUVs with seating up to 5 passengers.

Other than the renter’s spouse or domestic partner, no other additional drivers are allowed.

At the time of rental, charges will be placed on the debit card which reduce the available funds in the account associated with the card used. Renter is responsible for any overdraft fees incurred. See Rental Authorization and Deposit Amount for more details.

Disembarking passengers will be asked to provide a credit card or debit card with funds to cover the cost of rental. Renters without a ticketed return travel itinerary will need to provide a credit card with sufficient funds to cover the cost of the rental plus $400. Debit cards are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a ticketed return travel itinerary.

Money orders and prepaid cards are not acceptable forms of security deposit but may be used to pay any balance due at the end of the rental.  Cash is not accepted.

  • Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP) is offered at the time of rental for an additional daily charge. If accepted, SLP provides the renter and authorized drivers with up to $300,000 combined single limit for third party liability claims. If the renter accepts SLP, Alamo provides third party liability protection up to the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit and Zurich American Insurance Company provides excess third party liability insurance coverage from the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit to $300,000. This is a summary only. SLP is subject to the terms, conditions, provisions, limitations and exclusions in the supplemental rental liability insurance excess policy underwritten by Zurich American Insurance Company. The purchase of SLP is optional and not required to rent a car. The coverage provided by SLP may duplicate the renters existing coverage. Alamo is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the renters existing coverage; therefore the renter should examine his or her personal insurance policies or other sources of coverage that may duplicate the coverage provided by SLP.
