Ram 1500 Expert Review

Motor Trend Staff

The 2020 Ram 1500 makes few changes for the current model year after 2019's major update. Of particular interest is the introduction of a more powerful version of the truck's turbodiesel V-6 engine, which now produces 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. It joins a 3.6-liter V-6 (305 hp) and a 5.7-liter V-8 (395 hp) on the options list, with these two gas engines offering a unique 48-volt hybrid assist system (standard on the V-6, optional on the V-8). An eight-speed automatic transmission is included across the board.

The Ram is notable for the exceptionally upscale cabin offered in its highest trim levels, as well as its acres of interior room, its coil spring rear suspension (for a smoother-than-average ride), and optional air ride system. It only features four-door models (Quad Cab and Crew Cab) and a pair of bed lengths, but it does come in seven different trim levels. It can also tow up to 12,750 pounds.

Regular cab Rams are available, but they ride on the previous-generation architecture and are sold as the Ram Classic. Production on updated two-door Rams is slated to begin in 2020.

  • Refreshed EcoDiesel V-6 returns
  • Night Edition package offers black-out styling
  • HFE trim focuses on efficiency
  • Minor equipment and options shuffling between trims

The Ram 1500 was our 2019 MotorTrend Truck of the Year, and it carries forward those qualities into the 2020 model year. We loved its best-in-class sophistication, its cabin, and its technology, stating that every Ram has the tools needed for both work and play, and that the brand has done its homework on picking the benchmarks for both design and packaging. We were also impressed by its eTorque mild hybrid drivetrains, praising their smoothness and efficiency. A recent review of the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel model saw us pleased with its quiet demeanor, its fuel-sipping tendencies, and its ability to make towing boring.

The base 2020 Ram 1500 is equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 that generates 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy for this engine, which makes use of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, is listed at 20/26 mpg city/highway in HFE trim, with one less highway mpg for standard rear-wheel drive models. Four-wheel drive drops efficiency to 19/24 mpg.

Next up are a pair of 5.7-liter V-8 engines, each of which is rated at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. One features an optional eTorque mild hybrid setup, which gives you 17/23 mpg, or a single mpg better on the highway than the gas-only V-8. Four-wheel drive drops mileage to 15/22 mpg (eTorque) and 15/21 mpg (gas only).

The 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 model puts down 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, and offers up 22/32 mpg in two-wheel drive trim and 21/29 mpg for four-wheel drive models.

Each Ram is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2020 Ram 1500 was awarded IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status due to its rating of Good in every individual crash test. It also scored Good and Marginal for its headlights, depending on trim level, and Superior for its front crash prevention system. The NHTSA gave the 1500 four stars out of a possible five in its own crash testing.

There is no active safety equipment included with the base model Ram. Moving up through its trim levels makes it possible to specify features such as blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and lane departure warning.

The 2020 Ram offers a choice between a 5.7- or 6.4-foot bed on Crew cab models, while Quad cabs are only offered with the longer bed (which offers 61.5 cu-ft of cargo space). Maximum hauling capacity for the 1500 is 2,329 pounds, while towing is capped at 12,750 pounds when properly equipped.

Front riders in the Ram benefit from 40.9 inches of leg room, with 35.6 inches (Quad) and 45.2 inches (Crew) available in the rear.

The 2020 Ram 1500 features a 5-inch infotainment system, a push-button starter, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker stereo system, and Bluetooth connectivity as standard equipment. Additional tech gear available on higher trim levels includes an 8.4-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a larger 12-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker Alpine stereo, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and satellite radio.

The 2020 Ram 1500 is offered in seven trim levels.

2020 Ram Tradesman: This work-focused model offers a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker stereo system, and 17-inch steel wheels.

2020 Ram 1500 HFE: This is a stripped-down model intended to maximize fuel economy, offering no upgrades over the Tradesman other than unique styling cues.

2020 Ram 1500 Big Horn/Lone Star (Texas-only name swap): Life truly begins in the Big Horn/Lone Star, which sees 18-inch alloy wheels installed, as well as fog lights, a folding rear seat, vinyl/cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, and chrome trim exterior trim and a chrome grille.

2020 Ram 1500 Laramie: A set of 20-inch wheels, an 8.4-inch infotainment system, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustment up front, leather upholstery, and power side mirrors are all included with this model, as is a 10-speaker Alpine stereo system and a navigation system.

2020 Ram 1500 Rebel: Aimed at off-road adventure types, the Rebel is based on the Big Horn and packs 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch rims, LED exterior lighting, a slow-release tailgate, and a locking rear differential to go with its rough-and-tumble suspension package.

2020 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn: Luxury gear such as a leather-wrapped dashboard, upgraded leather for the seats, a heated rear bench, wood accents, and front tow hooks match the Laramie Longhorn's extensive exterior chrome.

2020 Ram 1500 Limited: The top-tier Ram includes a 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system, Ram's impressive 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, standard air suspension, and even more chrome accents on the body.

Overview

Pickups have a variety of talents, but the 2022 Ram 1500 is more talented than most half-ton trucks because it's significantly nicer. Sure, the entry-level models aren't lined with the luscious materials and upscale features of the priciest trims, but they still ride better than the fanciest alternatives thanks to its more sophisticated suspension, which can be made cushier with the available air springs. Ram also offers the 1500 with a massive 12.0-inch touchscreen, compartments built into the cargo bed, and a split-folding tailgate. Its roster of engines operate through a silky automatic transmission and include a 395-hp Hemi V-8 (with or without hybrid assistance) and an eco-friendly diesel six-cylinder with 480 pound-feet of torque. The strongest configuration can also tow 12,750 pounds. Obviously, the Ram 1500's capabilities ensure it won't be confused for anything but a truck, but the fact that it can pass for a luxury vehicle is what makes it special.

What's New for 2022?

For 2022, Ram expands the variety of ways shoppers can get its half-ton pickup. The lineup's new additions include a sporty G/T package for the Laramie and Rebel, a rugged BackCountry Edition, and an even more luxurious version of the top-flight Limited known as the 10th Anniversary Edition. The G/T is highlighted by a cold-air intake, unique exhaust system, paddle shifters, and a console-mounted shifter. The BackCountry Edition is essentially an off-road-oriented package for the value-minded Big Horn and Lone Star models. The 10th Anniversary Edition further elevates the Limited model with even richer interior materials, an exclusively available Blue Shade paint color, and special badging inside and out.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Although the 702-hp Ram 1500 TRX (reviewed separately) diminishes the desirability of the Rebel, we still think it's the half-ton Ram to get. We'd opt for the crew cab with four-wheel drive, and we prefer the extra power and sexy rumble of the V-8 versus the standard V-6. We'd also choose the air suspension for its selectable ride height. Since it requires either the Level 1 or Level 2 package, we think the latter's roster of remote start, 115-volt power outlet, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, passive hands-free entry, and more make it the one to get. We'd also nab the 33-gallon fuel tank that will enable fewer fill-ups during road trips than the standard 26-gallon tank. The only other options we'd recommend are the Safety and Convenience package (adaptive cruise, automatic high-beams, lane-keeping assist) and the Multifunction Tailgate that also brings a spray-in bedliner.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Among its many trim levels, there are V-6 and V-8 gasoline powertrains that all pair with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Both engines are assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system, though the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 can also be had without the electric support. We've driven a couple models with the latter and appreciated the engine's baritone exhaust note and expeditious acceleration. We've also driven Rams with the diesel 3.0-liter V-6 (called EcoDiesel) that develops 480 pound-feet of torque, which is more than similar diesel engines on the half-ton Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The oil-burning six-cylinder is slower than the Hemi, but it's refined for a diesel and delivers better fuel economy. For adventurous folk, the rugged Rebel model provides beefier looks and legitimate off-road capability. Every Ram 1500 has an impressive ride thanks to a rear suspension that uses standard coil springs or optional air springs, unlike the traditional leaf-spring setup found on domestic rivals. Models equipped with the air suspension even have adjustable ride heights that aid fuel efficiency and off-road ability. Its light steering and strong brakes provide relaxed cruising and confident stops, too.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds and carry a payload of up to 2320 pounds. Its maximum towing capacity exceeds all but the Ford F-150, which currently exceeds 13,000 pounds. Rams with the crew cab—including the Rebel model—can't tow as much as the extended Quad Cab model but still exceed 11,500 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With hybridized V-6 and V-8 engines as well as a diesel option, the Ram 1500 lineup has varied fuel economy. The EPA estimates that the most efficient V-6 Ram will earn up to 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the V-8 version is rated up to 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The government estimates diesel-powered Rams will get up to 22 mpg city and 32 highway; those numbers are slightly lower with all-wheel drive. The Rebel we tested earned 24 mpg highway on our 75-mph real-world fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen. That's 6 mpg better than the gas-only V-8 Rebel and 4 mpg better than the nonhybrid V-8 Laramie we tested. For more information about the Ram 1500's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Ram 1500 has supremely functional cubby stowage and cavernous passenger space. Higher trims add upscale materials and creature comforts that make the Ram feel more like a luxury vehicle than a pickup truck. Most models can be equipped with upscale features such as heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof, while the fanciest versions have premium leather surfaces and genuine wood accents. As with most full-size pickup trucks, the Ram 1500's crew cab is supremely spacious. It also has vast amounts of interior storage and a unique split-folding tailgate. Both the five-foot-seven-inch and six-foot-four-inch cargo beds are available, but the extended Quad Cab only pairs with the latter.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ram trucks have had one of the best infotainment systems and connectivity features in the class for a while. That continues on the latest trucks, with a responsive 8.4-inch or massive optional 12.0-inch touchscreen that is available on all but the base Ram model. Too bad we experienced a lot of glitches with the huge display during the course of our 40,000-mile long-term test. The systems boast numerous power points as well as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot. Thankfully, even the largest screen has physical knobs and hard buttons that complement the touch points.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The pickup also has a host of available driver-assistance technology that ranges from automated emergency braking to lane-keeping assist. For more information about the Ram 1500's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available automatic high-beams headlights
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ram has a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that is only eclipsed by the Nissan Titan's lengthier coverage. Likewise, the half-ton Sierra and Silverado as well as the Toyota Tundra offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 50,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Be Smart, Check in Advance. CARFAX — Your Vehicle History.

CARFAX — Your Vehicle History Expert

Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you, but that's not the case when buying a used car. As an independent vehicle history provider, at CARFAX we've made it our mission to tell you everything you need to know by uncovering as many events as possible from the previous life of a used car. Our primary goal is to help you get to know your next car from the inside out before deciding to make an investment that will be part of you and your family's everyday life. We believe your next car shouldn't be hiding anything from you.

CARFAX Vehicle History Reports contain over 28 billion historical records from 20 European countries, the US and Canada, which are updated daily with new information.

Even if you live in a country we don't collect vehicle data from, it's still always worth checking the Vehicle Identification Number without obligation. The used car import and export market is booming and many owners would be surprised to find out exactly what happened to their vehicle during its previous life abroad.

Privacy for Customers — Transparency over Vehicles

Let's be clear: Although we strive to find every detail of a vehicle's life so far, we are focused only on the vehicle's history, and do not collect any information on previous owners. The information we provide relates solely to the vehicle, its odometer reading, any accidents that have been covered up, where the vehicle comes from and much more — it never gets personal. We've uncovered irreparable damage several times in the past, but other times our vehicle history checks draw a blank — and sometimes that's actually a good thing.

Second Hand — Not Second Best

Did you know that considerably more used cars are sold than new cars? We think this second-hand system is nothing short of fantastic. However, it goes without saying that it gives rise to different methods and tactics: Some sellers will disguise a car that's been in an accident under a fresh coat of paint, tamper with the odometer or conceal theft. This is one of the less appealing aspects of buying second hand. Our goal is to establish trusting relationships between buyers and sellers, since this is the best way to help customers make the right decision. Your new car should be reliable and make you feel safe, as well as make you feel like you haven't paid too much.

But more than anything else, we don't want you or your family unknowingly sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle that isn't 100% safe. This is why we strive to take these vehicles off the road, which not only makes the used car market safer but our streets safer too.

CARFAX — 35+ Years of Experience in Vehicle Histories

CARFAX was founded in the US in 1984 and expanded into Europe in 2007. Around 100 team members spread across six European offices process vehicle information from 22 countries.

Fostering strategic partnerships with registration authorities, law enforcement agencies, government departments, insurance companies, inspection centers and numerous other leading companies around the world has enabled us to compile a unique international database for vehicle histories. We use this database to help make the used car market more transparent. We give everyone in the process of buying a used car access to what is currently the world's most comprehensive source for vehicle history reports, and is growing day by day.

We remain neutral and independent despite our partnerships — our sole purpose is help customers make an informed choice and ensure their safety and the safety of their family. This includes never collecting any personal details — we do not accept any PII from data sources amongst the information we provide about a vehicle. We ensure that data protection laws are observed at all times. Furthermore, we always collect our data in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks — in all the countries in which we are active. We expressly distance ourselves from illegal activities such as data theft, scraping and hacking.

2021 RAM 1500 TRX With 702 Horsepower

Overview

Easy to drive despite its size, the 2020 Ram 1500 is versatile and competitively capable. Redesigned for 2019, this half-ton pickup truck now wears sleek bodywork and can be equipped with an interior that rivals many luxury-brand SUVs for plushness, without compromising its ability to do real work. The Ram's smooth riding coil-spring suspension tops all rivals, and optional air springs at all four corners do even better regardless of load. The choices of drivetrains and equipment make it easy to find a version suited to weekend household chores, off-road fun, or serious towing and hauling. The Ram 1500 isn't just a great truck, it's a great vehicle, and that's why we named it to our 2020 10Best list.

What's New for 2020?

The most significant news for 2020 is that the optional EcoDiesel V-6 has been improved, with a lighter block, improved cylinder-head breathing, and a more efficient turbocharger. That bumps the costly diesel's output to 260 horsepower and a stout 480 lb-ft of torque, a measure by which the previous version already topped all light-duty diesel pickups; at this writing, the EPA has not yet certified the new engine but Ram says it'll be on sale by the end of 2019. Also new for 2020 is the return of the black-trimmed Night Edition on Big Horn and Laramie versions, while the off-road-oriented Rebel now includes a standard Comfort package with power tailgate release, heated rear seats and a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat. Rebels can also be had with a driver-assistance technology package that includes adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We'd go for a Ram 1500 Rebel 4x4 that starts at $49,935 and add the air-spring suspension, the luxury-packed Level 2 equipment package, plus the bedliner, the Bed Utility group, and Trailer Tow group. With the standard 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque, that's an efficient, go-anywhere truck that can handle most of what life throws at it for what is, by modern pickup standards, a moderate $55,385. If you need to get to 60 mph in less than six seconds, you'll need the Hemi but now you're adding cost both at buy-in and in operation—you could easily build out a Ram 1500 with a lot more towing and hauling ability, or one with all the bells and whistles, but that's how people end up driving pickups that crest the $70,000 mark.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Among its many trim levels, there's V-6 and V-8 powertrains. Both engines are assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system, but the V-8 can be had without the electric support. The lineup also includes an optional diesel 3.0-liter V-6 (called EcoDiesel) that develops 480 lb-ft of torque, which is more than similar diesel engines on half-ton pickups from Chevy and Ford.

Its max towing capacity exceeds all but the Ford F-150, which tops out at 13,200 pounds. Rams with the crew cab—including the Rebel model—can't tow as much as the extended Quad Cab model but still exceed 11,500 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With hybridized V-6 and V-8 engines as well as a diesel option, the 2020 Ram 1500 lineup has varied fuel economy. The EPA estimates that the most efficient V-6 Ram will earn up to 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the V-8 version is rated up to 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. While the EPA hasn't announced estimates for the diesel-powered Ram 1500, the Rebel model we tested earned 24 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route. That was 6 mpg better than the gas-only V-8 Rebel and 4 mpg better than the nonhybrid V-8 Laramie we tested.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the 2020 Ram 1500 has supremely functional cubby stowage and cavernous passenger space. Both 5'7" and 6'4" cargo beds are available, but the extended Quad Cab only pairs with the latter.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ram trucks have had one of the best infotainment systems and connectivity features in the class for a while. That continues on the latest trucks, with a responsive 8.4-inch or massive optional 12.0-inch touchscreen that is available on all but the base Ram model. The systems boast numerous power points as well as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot. Thankfully, even the largest screen has physical knobs and hard buttons that complement the touch points.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Ram 1500 earned solid ratings form the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it hasn't been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also has a host of driver-assistance technologies that range from automated emergency braking to lane-keeping assist. Key safety features include:

  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available automatic high-beam headlights
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ram has a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that is only eclipsed by the Nissan Titan's lengthier coverage. Likewise, the half-ton GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado as well as the Toyota Tundra offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
