Do Not Grow Weary

dConsiderhimwhoenduredfromsinnerssuchhostilityagainsthimself,sothatyoumaynotgrowwearyorefainthearted.Inyourstruggleagainstsinyouhavenotyetresistedtothepointofsheddingyourblood.Andhaveyouforgottentheexhortationthataddressesyouassons?

fMyson,gdonotregardlightlythedisciplineoftheLord,

norbewearywhenreprovedbyhim.

ForhtheLorddisciplinestheoneheloves,

andchastiseseverysonwhomhereceives.

Itisfordisciplinethatyouhavetoendure.iGodistreatingyouassons.Forwhatsonistherewhomhisfatherdoesnotdiscipline?Ifyouareleftwithoutdiscipline,jinwhichallhaveparticipated,thenyouareillegitimatechildrenandnotsons.Besidesthis,wehavehadearthlyfatherswhodisciplinedusandwerespectedthem.ShallwenotmuchmorebesubjecttoktheFatherofspiritslandlive?10 Fortheydisciplinedusforashorttimeasitseemedbesttothem,buthedisciplinesusforourgood,mthatwemaysharehisholiness.11 nForthemomentalldisciplineseemspainfulratherthanpleasant,butlaterityieldsothepeacefulfruitofrighteousnesstothosewhohavebeentrainedbyit.

12 Thereforepliftyourdroopinghandsandstrengthenyourweakknees,13 andqmakestraightpathsforyourfeet,sothatwhatislamemaynotbeputoutofjointrbutratherbehealed.14 sStriveforpeacewitheveryone,andforthetholinessuwithoutwhichnoonewillseetheLord.15 SeetoitthatnoonevfailstoobtainthegraceofGod;thatnowrootofbitternessspringsupandcausestrouble,andbyitmanybecomedefiled;16 thatnooneisxsexuallyimmoralorunholylikeEsau,whosoldhisbirthrightforasinglemeal.17 Foryouknowthatyafterward,whenhedesiredtoinherittheblessing,hewasrejected,forhefoundnochancetorepent,thoughhesoughtitwithtears.

A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

18 Foryouhavenotcometozwhatmaybetouched,ablazingfireanddarknessandgloomandatempest19 andathesoundofatrumpetandavoicewhosewordsbmadethehearersbegthatnofurthermessagesbespokentothem.20 Fortheycouldnotenduretheorderthatwasgiven,cIfevenabeasttouchesthemountain,itshallbestoned.21 Indeed,dsoterrifyingwasthesightthatMosessaid,Itremblewithfear.22 ButyouhavecometoeMountZionandtothecityofthelivingGod,ftheheavenlyJerusalem,andtoginnumerableangelsinfestalgathering,23 andtohtheassemblyofthefirstbornwhoareienrolledinheaven,andtojGod,thejudgeofall,andtothespiritsoftherighteousmadeperfect,24 andtoJesus,kthemediatorofanewcovenant,andtolthesprinkledbloodmthatspeaksabetterwordthanthebloodofAbel.

25 Seethatyoudonotrefusehimwhoisspeaking.Forniftheydidnotescapewhentheyrefusedhimwhowarnedthemonearth,muchlesswillweescapeifwerejecthimwhowarnsfromheaven.26 Atthattimeohisvoiceshooktheearth,butnowhehaspromised,pYetoncemoreIwillshakenotonlytheearthbutalsotheheavens.27 Thisphrase,Yetoncemore,indicatesqtheremovalofthingsthatareshakenthatis,thingsthathavebeenmadeinorderthatthethingsthatcannotbeshakenmayremain.28 Thereforeletusbegratefulforreceivingrakingdomthatcannotbeshaken,andthussletusoffertoGodacceptableworship,withreverenceandawe,29 forourtGodisaconsumingfire.

Sacrifices Pleasing to God

13 Letubrotherlylovecontinue.vDonotneglecttoshowhospitalitytostrangers,fortherebywsomehaveentertainedangelsunawares.xRememberthosewhoareinprison,asthoughinprisonwiththem,andthosewhoaremistreated,sinceyoualsoareinthebody.yLetmarriagebeheldinhonoramongall,andletthemarriagebedbeundefiled,forGodwilljudgezthesexuallyimmoralandadulterous.Keepyourlifeafreefromloveofmoney,andbbecontentwithwhatyouhave,forhehassaid,cIwillneverleaveyounorforsakeyou.Sowecanconfidentlysay,

dTheLordismyhelper;

eIwillnotfear;

whatcanmandotome?

Rememberfyourleaders,thosewhospoketoyouthewordofGod.Considertheoutcomeoftheirwayoflife,andgimitatetheirfaith.JesusChristishthesameyesterdayandtodayandforever.Donotbeiledawaybydiverseandstrangeteachings,foritisgoodforthehearttobestrengthenedbygrace,jnotbyfoods,whichhavenotbenefitedthosedevotedtothem.10 Wehaveanaltarkfromwhichthosewhoservethetenthavenorighttoeat.11 Forlthebodiesofthoseanimalswhosebloodisbroughtintotheholyplacesbythehighpriestasasacrificeforsinareburnedmoutsidethecamp.12 SoJesusalsonsufferedooutsidethegateinordertosanctifythepeoplepthroughhisownblood.13 Thereforeletusgotohimoutsidethecampandbearqthereproachheendured.14 Forrherewehavenolastingcity,butweseekthecitythatistocome.15 sThroughhimthenletuscontinuallyofferuptasacrificeofpraisetoGod,thatis,uthefruitoflipsthatacknowledgehisname.16 Donotneglecttodogoodandvtosharewhatyouhave,forsuchwsacrificesarepleasingtoGod.

17 Obeyxyourleadersandsubmittothem,yfortheyarekeepingwatchoveryoursouls,asthosewhowillhavetozgiveanaccount.aLetthemdothiswithjoyandnotwithgroaning,forthatwouldbeofnoadvantagetoyou.

18 bPrayforus,forwearesurethatwehaveaclearconscience,desiringtoacthonorablyinallthings.19 IurgeyouthemoreearnestlytodothisinordercthatImayberestoredtoyouthesooner.

eCountitalljoy,mybrothers,whenyoumeettrialsfofvariouskinds,foryouknowthatgthetestingofyourfaithhproducessteadfastness.Andletsteadfastnesshaveitsfulleffect,thatyoumaybeiperfectandcomplete,lackinginnothing.

jIfanyofyoulackswisdom,klethimaskGod,lwhogivesgenerouslytoallwithoutreproach,anditwillbegivenhim.Butmlethimaskinfaith,nwithnodoubting,fortheonewhodoubtsislikeoawaveoftheseathatisdrivenandtossedbythewind.ForthatpersonmustnotsupposethathewillreceiveanythingfromtheLord;pheisadouble-mindedman,qunstableinallhisways.

Letthelowlybrotherboastinhisexaltation,10 andrtherichinhishumiliation,becauseslikeaflowerofthegrasshewillpassaway.11 Forthesunriseswithitsscorchingheatandtwithersthegrass;itsflowerfalls,anditsbeautyperishes.Soalsowilltherichmanfadeawayinthemidstofhispursuits.

22 Butbendoersoftheword,andnothearersonly,deceivingyourselves.23 Forifanyoneisahearerofthewordandnotadoer,heislikeamanwholooksintentlyathisnaturalfaceinamirror.24 Forhelooksathimselfandgoesawayandatonceforgetswhathewaslike.25 Buttheonewholooksintotheperfectlaw,othelawofliberty,andperseveres,beingnohearerwhoforgetsbutadoerwhoacts,phewillbeblessedinhisdoing.

26 Ifanyonethinksheisreligiousqanddoesnotbridlehistonguebutdeceiveshisheart,thisperson’srreligionisworthless.27 ReligionthatispureandundefiledbeforeGodtheFatheristhis:stovisittorphansandwidowsintheiraffliction,andutokeeponeselfvunstainedfromtheworld.

The Sin of Partiality

Mybrothers,wshownopartialityasyouholdthefaithinourLordJesusChrist,xtheLordofglory.Forifamanwearingagoldringandfineclothingcomesintoyourassembly,andapoormaninshabbyclothingalsocomesin,andifyoupayattentiontotheonewhowearsthefineclothingandsay,Yousithereinagoodplace,ywhileyousaytothepoorman,Youstandoverthere,or,Sitdownatmyfeet,haveyounotthenmadedistinctionsamongyourselvesandbecomezjudgeswithevilthoughts?Listen,mybelovedbrothers,ahasnotGodchosenthosewhoarepoorintheworldtobebrichinfaithandheirsofcthekingdom,dwhichhehaspromisedtothosewholovehim?Butyouehavedishonoredthepoorman.Arenottherichtheoneswhooppressyou,andtheoneswhofdragyougintocourt?Aretheynottheoneswhoblasphemethehonorablehnamebywhichyouwerecalled?

IfyoureallyfulfilltheroyallawaccordingtotheScripture,iYoushallloveyourneighborasyourself,youaredoingwell.Butifyoujshowpartiality,youarecommittingsinandareconvictedbythelawastransgressors.10 Forwhoeverkeepsthewholelawbutfailsinonepointkhasbecomeguiltyofallofit.11 Forhewhosaid,lDonotcommitadultery,alsosaid,lDonotmurder.Ifyoudonotcommitadulterybutdomurder,youhavebecomeatransgressorofthelaw.12 Sospeakandsoactasthosewhoaretobejudgedundermthelawofliberty.13 Fornjudgmentiswithoutmercytoonewhohasshownnomercy.Mercytriumphsoverjudgment.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 Whatgoodisit,mybrothers,ifsomeonesayshehasfaithobutdoesnothaveworks?Canthatfaithsavehim?15 pIfabrotherorsisterispoorlyclothedandlackingindailyfood,16 qandoneofyousaystothem,Goinpeace,bewarmedandfilled,withoutgivingthemthethingsneededforthebody,whatgoodisthat?17 Soalsofaithbyitself,ifitdoesnothaveworks,isdead.

Taming the Tongue

cNotmanyofyoushouldbecometeachers,mybrothers,foryouknowthatwewhoteachwillbejudgedwithgreaterstrictness.Fordweallstumbleinmanyways.Andifanyonedoesnotstumbleinwhathesays,eheisaperfectman,fablealsotobridlehiswholebody.Ifweputgbitsintothemouthsofhorsessothattheyobeyus,weguidetheirwholebodiesaswell.Lookattheshipsalso:thoughtheyaresolargeandaredrivenbystrongwinds,theyareguidedbyaverysmallrudderwhereverthewillofthepilotdirects.Soalsothetongueisasmallmember,yethitboastsofgreatthings.

Howgreataforestissetablazebysuchasmallfire!Andithetongueisafire,aworldofunrighteousness.Thetongueissetamongourmembers,jstainingthewholebody,settingonfiretheentirecourseoflife,andsetonfirebyhell.Foreverykindofbeastandbird,ofreptileandseacreature,canbetamedandhasbeentamedbymankind,butnohumanbeingcantamethetongue.Itisarestlessevil,kfullofdeadlypoison.WithitweblessourLordandFather,andwithitwecursepeoplelwhoaremadeinthelikenessofGod.10 Fromthesamemouthcomeblessingandcursing.Mybrothers,thesethingsoughtnottobeso.11 Doesaspringpourforthfromthesameopeningbothfreshandsaltwater?12 Canafigtree,mybrothers,bearolives,oragrapevineproducefigs?Neithercanasaltpondyieldfreshwater.
