DefaultStar Car charging problems

I recently purchased a home and it came with a 2007 Star Car. It seems to be a nice cart but when I plug it in at night the charger boils the batteries and it has an awful sulfer smell in the garage in the morning. It also is taking a lot of water every 2 days or so. Anyone else experiencing problems like this? Thought of trading it in for a gas cart but seems like my Star Car may be hard to sell for a decent price.

Sounds like your battery charger is charging at full amps all night.get it checked out you don't want to ruin your battery's or worst yet start a fire. Good luck.

You need to take a look at the batteries first, as you may have a battery that is not coming up equal with the rest of the pack. However, the early star cars came with a charger, that lets say, is not the greatest. The most common issue though, is a battery not charging equal with the rest of the pack.

We had a star cart with similar problems. The charger used to smell and make noise also. When the repairman came out he accused us of not keeping enough water in the batteries. Which was false because the charger had gotten the batteries hot and the water had evaporated. We went through 3 brand new battery chargers before they put an original (older) charger on our cart and after that things were fine. Ours was a 2008.

My non-expert advice would be to sell the Star Car for whatever you can get for it and buy a Club Car, Yamaha or EZ-Go. It will be worth it in the long run.

Hate to say it, but it sounds as though, the proper testing was not done for you to have to go through 3 chargers. Its not rocket science to figure out if the problem is in the charger or the batteries.

Star Cars are no different than another other golf car- they are all powered the same. The problem comes from repair shops who dont like working on unfamiliar carts to them, the reality is, they are as simple to work on as any other cart.

I agree. Star carts use the ame parts as the other carts as far as the major coomponents. There will always be a smell when it charges over night. That is normal. I can go weeks without it neededing water.

Not only are Star Carts the same in most ways, but the controller is a stock Curtis I think 1266 with all parameters open and set-able, they come with 400 to 500 amp controllers stock club car controllers are 250 amp and newer ones are 300 so they have more power to climb hills or hall heaver loads.

fix it, keep it and drive it.

if you look on this site you see nothing but complaints on service companies if someone will not work on it then you better off to start with, you are weeding out incompetence.

some star cart chargers have a switch for flooded or gel batteries. flooded is actually for a lead acid type. if it`s set on gel, this is a possible result.

Sorry to disagree, but I have had my Star cart for 2 years now and love it. Not one bit of trouble and I estimate close to 50 miles a charge.

Sours: https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/

Projections show golf cart sales worldwide to be in excess of $2.5 billion by 2023. That’s a lot of carts to produce and sell–and a lot of carts to maintain. Whether you drive your cart for a round of 18 or around your hometown, eventually you’ll experience some electric golf cart problems. Troubleshooting electric golf carts may seem daunting at first, but it doesn’t have to be. In this post, we’ll consider five common electric golf cart issues and how to resolve them.

1. Troubleshooting Batteries

Like any electric vehicle, the battery is often the root of the problem. If you go to start your golf cart and nothing happens, this is the first place to check.

A voltmeter will determine if your battery is depleted (and by how much). Some cart models use a small amount of electricity even when not in use. If the cart goes without charge for a long time, the battery may lack the minimum voltage required to restart.

Batteries also lose their efficiency with age. This is something to consider if you bought the cart used or have owned it for many years. (If you’re looking to buy a used cart, be sure to ask about the age of the battery.)

Back to the issue at hand–getting your battery up and running again. Golf cart batteries need water added regularly. There should be enough to cover the conductive plates without filling the water all the way to the cap.

If necessary, add water and/or electrolytes to your electric golf cart’s battery. Keep in mind that the battery contains acid, so be sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear. Avoid spills if possible and immediately clean anything that does spill.

What if you notice any corrosion around the terminals? Gently clean it with a soft brush and a solution of water and baking soda. This is also an ideal time to check for any broken cables or frayed wires.

The best way to preserve your battery’s life is to fully charge your cart after every use.

2. Ignition or Motor Issues

If you’ve charged and cleaned your battery and you’re still having electric golf cart problems, your next step is to check the motor.

Believe it or not, it may be as simple as pressing a reset button. Use a screwdriver to expose the motor. Look for a small red button located near the main power supply.

Press the button and put your cart back together before hooking it up to charge. In many cases, this will solve the problem.

If it doesn’t, try removing the motor and testing it with a separate, fully charged battery. If nothing happens, the motor is probably burned out.

Most cases of motor burnout result from poor traction or excess resistance to grade or weight. In that instance, uninstall the motor and inspect it for any worn brushes, field coils, or damaged bearings.

If there’s something in need of minor repair, you may be able to fix the damage yourself. If you lack the right tools (or patience), you can always take the motor into a golf cart repair shop.

What if you find a problem with the motor housing or the armature? Unfortunately, these electric golf cart issues aren’t so easy to fix. You’re probably better off to replace the motor than trying to salvage what’s left of it.

3. Solenoid Woes

In case you’re not familiar with the term, a solenoid is a coil of wire used as an electromagnet. the most common use for a solenoid is to power a switch. Such as the starter for your golf cart.

Like the starter on a car, you should hear a distinct “clicking” sound when you turn the key. This is the solenoid providing the motor with the power it needs to move the cart.

If you try to start your cart and don’t hear that “click,” it’s likely an issue with your solenoid. If you’re lucky, the problem could be as simple as a loose wire or a broken coil. In some cases, corrosion can also be a factor.

If you suspect a faulty solenoid, your best bet is to take your cart to a repair shop. A mechanic can diagnose the problem and replace the solenoid if necessary.

4. Faulty Direction Switch

Every time you switch your cart from forward to reverse, you place more wear and tear on that little direction switch.

These switches are designed for thousands of uses, before replacement. But if you bought your cart used or have driven it for a while, you’ll eventually start having issues with the direction switch.

Again, this is a repair best left to the pros.

5. No Speed Control

What if your cart starts up like a dream but doesn’t have the giddy-up it used to?

If you’re having trouble maintaining speed–or getting up to speed in the first place–it could be a faulty potentiometer. This little switch regulates your cart’s speed, but it’s notorious for causing problems over time.

The two biggest culprits are cracks and loose connections. Even if you locate the problem, it’s tricky to diagnose and repair yourself. Unless you can easily reach and tighten the connections, it’s best to bring your cart into a shop for repair.

Fixing Electric Golf Cart Problems: Now You Know

So, which of these electric golf cart problems are you facing?

With the right parts and a bit of work, you should have your cart up and running again in no time!

Of course, once it’s running like a champ, you want to keep it that way. Check out our post on golf cart maintenance tips so you never miss a day on the course.

Golf cart charging

Golf Cart Battery Charger

The golf cart battery charger may or may not be the problem when your deep cycle batteries won't take a charge.

There are two main types of battery chargers for electric golf carts:

1.  Automatic for the newer carts

2. Non-Automatic for older carts

Older chargers usually have an ON/OFF/Timer knob.  The knob allows you to manually turn the charger ON or OFF and to set the number of hours for the charger to stay on.

Batteries Won't Take A Charge
Is it the Batteries or the Charger?

Our reliable Club Car battery charger is 20 years old and still going strong. Maintaining an electric golf cart can be quite economical - such is the case with battery chargers. There is not much that goes wrong with them.

golf cart battery chargers

Most older golf cart battery chargers are 36 volt systems and will turn on and try to charge any 36 volt battery pack - no matter how low the battery voltage.  The newer chargers use a different system - a solid state circuit board - which means it has to detect a certain amount of voltage from the battery pack to start charging.

If your batteries have completely discharged the battery charger will not turn on. Often new golf cart owners believe the problem to be the golf cart charger - when in fact it's the depleted batteries.

The ammeter gauge on the front dash shows the number of amperes being provided to the battery pack.

According to Jack Triolo from Golf Cart Catalog, "Any 36 volt battery charger should initially start by providing at least 15+ amps to the batteries. The amps may drop down very quickly if the batteries are fully charged but the ammeter should show at least 15 amps to start off. If you know that the batteries need charging and the ammeter will not go above 15 amps, then you probably have a faulty charger and it must be repaired."

Most often when batteries won't charge the problem is the batteries.  But there are a few things that can cause charger failure.  Here are the main components:

golf cart battery chargers

1.  ON/OFF/TIMER Switch

2.  Two diodes mounted onto a flat aluminum plate

3.  A Capacitor

4.  A transformer

5.  Fuses

6.  An ammeter

7. A DC plug

The three most common causes of problems with a golf cart battery charger have to do with the timer units, diodes and bad DC plugs.

If you think you may be having trouble with your deep cycle battery charger, you can bring it in to your local golf cart shop and have it tested. Usually the charger can be repaired rather than replaced. That's what we did with our 30 year old Club Car that wasn't charging.  The DC cord and plug needed to be replaced.  Cost about $100 and the charger was back to working again.  If you want to replace it yourself you can find  at Amazon for about half that here:

Purchasing a Golf Cart Battery Charger

A golf cart battery charger re-charges your golf cart batteries - after every use.  Selecting the type of golf cart charger is based on the total number of volts your battery pack has. A 36V golf cart requires a 36 volt charger, and a 48V golf cart requires a 48 volt charger.

The voltage from the charger needs to match with the voltage of the batteries.

Normally, if you are purchasing a new or used golf cart, the golf cart charger is often part of the deal. But if it is not, and you need to buy a deep cycle battery charger here are a couple of things you should know.

1. The make, model and year of your golf cart.

club car battery charger

Golf cart battery chargers are specific to the make of the cart.

Meaning you must buy a Yamaha golf cart battery charger if you have a Yamaha golf cart.

Also there are different chargers depending on the year the cart was made.

2. The battery voltage

The golf cart battery charger needs to match the same voltage as your golf cart. If you have a 36-volt golf cart, you need a 36-volt charger. If you have a 48-volt golf cart, you need a 48-volt charger.

your guide to golf cart battery chargers

You can tell if your golf cart is 36V or 48V by the number of cells or holes it has.  Each cell is equal to 2 volts. Multiply the number of holes by 2; You see 4 cells in this pictured golf cart battery battery yo; 4X2=8. Multiply 8 by the number of batteries, which is 6 and that equals 48.

3. The amount of use of the golf cart.

These battery chargers come in 12v, 20v and 25v.

If the cart is used very minimally for short periods of time - like a run up to the mailbox each day then the 12 v will suffice.

For those who use it for 18 holes of golf then a 20v is recommended. This is by far the most common size charger.

However there is a 25v battery charger for heavier and long, term daily use. If you think you may be having trouble with your charger, you can bring it in to your local golf cart shop and have it tested. Usually the charger can be repaired rather than replaced.

4.  The plug in type

Skip the Lester E-series (grey front, dark grey top & sides), its their "cheaper" model. Never been a big fan of the failed transformers in the Lestronic II/ Powerwise II. Cant go wrong with the Old 25a Lester in a plain aluminum colored box. I have a bunch of great old lesters, a couple of really powerful Really old lesters in green cases that just wont die, and a bunch of newer paperweight broken lesters. I have yet to find a single "new design, high frequency" charger from any maker that i would trust farther than i can throw it (easily identified by weighing about 5 lbs), the best HF charger i know of is the DeltaQ QuiQ (and they had their own design problems, especially the "onboard" models).

Tightly tied that it was impossible to connect them together, as soon as I did not try.
