kaichou wa maid-sama manga review

Brilliant and overachieving, Misaki Ayuzawa is the President of the Student Council at Seika High School, formerly a boys’ school. Unfortunately, most of the students are still male and stuck in their slovenly habits, so man-hating Misaki really socks it to ’em in an attempt to make the school presentable to attract more female students. But what will she do when the sexiest boy in school finds out that after school, Misaki works in a maid cafe.

We are now OVER halfway through Anniversary Review Week, and today we are looking at probably the first and second romance anime I ever really watched, and one who’s manga I followed religiously after I finished the series. Which is something I only do with shows that I really liked. This is also a show that, while labeled a romance anime, does not center the entire story on the romance between the two main characters.

It is also a show that I was surprised when I found out how old it actually is, because it does not seem like it could possibly be that old. However, now that I think about it…I watched this show right after I got my first computer and that was a little over seven years ago, and the show came out seven years ago. Boy, now I feel old. I mean the show is not actually all that old, it just seems like there is no way it came out seven years ago.

Without further rambling, here is my 42nd Anime Review and Day 5 of Anniversary Review Week. A cute little show about a student council president who has a little secret: Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Kaichou wa Maid-sama, also known as Maid-sama or The Class President is a Maid, is a 26 episode anime that was animated by Sentai Filmworks. It started airing in April 2010 as a part of the Spring 2010 Anime Season. Maid sama finished airing in September 2010, and released two bonus episodes which brings Maid-sama‘s total to 28 episodes. It is based off the manga of the same name written by Hiro Fujiwara. It ran from December 2005 to September 2013, releasing a total of 18 volumes. Sentai also released an English dub of the anime.

Our story centers on Seika High School’s recently elected Student Council President Misaki Ayuzawa. Seika High School had only recently became a co-ed school, and Misaki is the first female Student Council President. She is known as the “Demon President” because of how hard she is on the boys and following all the rules, and she is not afraid to fight anyone who opposes her.

While frightening to the misbehaving boys, she is doing it so the girls of Seika feel same and comfortable at school. But that is not all their is to Misaki. To help her single mom pay the pills, and take care of her sister, Misaki works part-time at a maid cafe. Something she does not want her classmates to know because she thinks it will ruin her reputation. Then one day Takumi Usui, the most popular boy at school, comes to the maid cafe.

We then follow the high school hijinks of a Misaki trying to balance everything going on in her life, as well as dealing with the “perverted alien” Usui who could blow her cover at any moment. It is truly a funny show that usually was more funny than romantic, but it had its moments where the romance side shown through.

In my opinion, Misaki is a great female lead. She is trying to do the best she can to help out not only her family, but the girls at her school (and the boys sometimes too). She is a no nonsense kind of girl, who is just trying to deal with Usui who she has suddenly formed a friendship with. She’s hardworking, stern, and caring which makes me love her as a person.

And while she makes Usui seem bad, he is really just trying to be there whenever she needs him and get closer to her. He’s funny, with a very dry sense of humor, and you never have any idea what he could do next. Not to mention just how devoted her is to Misaki. I personally love Usui, and his relationship with Misaki really did blossom into something adorable. The other characters we get introduced to are Misaki’s family, the other workers at he cafe, fellow Student Council members, various classmates, and Misaki’s two close friends.

Oh! And some students from different schools. They also have their own quirkly little thing in their character that made them stand out from one another. Sure, they are not fleshed out as I would have liked (that’s probably the one thing this show could improve on) but they did add to the comedic side of the show. The character cast was nothing new or exciting, but it was a cast of character that I grew to love more and more as the show went on.

Maid-sama was animated by Sentai Filmworks and while the show is pleasant to watch, the animation is nothing over the top or awe inspiring. The show is not bad, and had hardly any problems. It was just…average. The soundtrack was a little better. The show had one opening, “My Secret” by Saaya Mizuno, and two endings, “Yokan” and “Loop” both by Heidi. They were really good songs, the opening I found especially catchy, and they all made their way onto my iPod.

In the end, I award Kaichou wa Maid-sama with a B. It is a cute little show with some good characters and an interesting story. Misaki and Usui definitely make it worth a try. It is funny and cute and is one of my top shows to watch when I need a good laugh. It may not be perfect, but it is one of those shows that I still recommend trying if you like these kinds of shows.

Main article: List of Maid Sama! characters

Once an all-boys high school, Seika High, infamous for its rowdy students, has recently become a co-ed school. However, with the female population still remaining a minority even after the change over the recent years, Misaki Ayuzawa works hard to make the school a better place for girls. She puts a lot of effort into academics and athletics, and earns the trust of the teachers. Eventually, she becomes the first female student council president. Misaki has gained a reputation, among the male students body as a strict boy-hating demon dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her reputation, she secretly works part-time at a maid café in order to support her ill mom and sister by returning the huge debt their father had left them.

Unfortunately, Misaki's secret is soon discovered by Takumi Usui, a popular boy at Seika High. Instead of exposing it to the school, though, Usui keeps it for himself and even becomes a regular customer at the café, much to Misaki's chagrin. Known for being a genius in pretty much everything from academics to athletics and for having rejected numerous confessions of his female peers, Usui takes a liking to Misaki because he finds her 'interesting'. After going through various awkward situations, including being confronted by a forgotten childhood friend of hers, Misaki falls in love with Usui, who reciprocates, and the two soon become a couple.

However, their relationship is troubled by Usui's difficult familial past coming back to haunt him. Being an illegitimate child of a wealthy English noble family, Usui technically cannot form a relationship with anyone not in his social standing, Misaki included. Misaki has to see Usui being forced to transfer to a prestigious rival school Miabigaoka, and then away from Japan completely when his family takes him back to England. However, they graduate and Usui and Misaki eventually marry 10 years later.

The October 2009 issue of LaLa announced that a 26 episode anime television adaptation of the series would be produced.[2] It was broadcast in TBS and BS-TBS during Spring 2010.[12] The April 2010 issue of LaLa revealed the broadcast date to be on April 1, 2010 at 1:55 midnight. The adaptation was also present at the Tokyo International Anime Fair with Ayumi Fujimura, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Kana Hanazawa and Yū Kobayashi's attendance.[13] The anime series is licensed by Sentai Filmworks, with The Anime Network currently streaming the series on their video portal.[14] Anime distributor Section23 Films released the first subtitled-only set on DVD, June 7, 2011.[15] The second subtitled-DVD set was released on August 2, 2011.[16] A complete collection on DVD was released on October 9, 2012.[17] Sentai Filmworks & Section23 re-released the series on DVD and Blu-ray, with an English dub on January 27, 2015.

The staff list was announced and Hiroaki Sakurai directed the series with series composition done by Mamiko Ikeda who previously worked on the series composition for Emma: A Victorian Romance series and most recently the Rental Magica series and Hanasakeru Seishōnen, while the animation character designs by Yuki Imoto and music composed by Tōru Motoyama. The series was animated by J.C.Staff who previously worked on Honey and Clover, Toradora! and Nodame Cantabile.[18]Ayumi Fujimura and Nobuhiko Okamoto took on the role of Misaki Ayuzawa and Takumi Usui respectively.

Drama CDs[edit]

A drama CD for Kaichō wa Maid-sama was released in Japan.[19]

Reception[edit]

Connie C. described the manga as being "pretty entertaining, if shallow", feeling that it was sexist towards both genders, but lighthearted enough in this that offense could not be taken, saying that she would continue to read the series as a "guilty pleasure".[20] Deb Aoki feels that the maid café setting provides both fanservice and a vehicle to critique gender roles.[21] In contrast, Johanna Draper Carlson feels that the story is "a male fantasy, where the scary, strong, smart, self-possessed girl turns out to secretly be subservient to men. It’s sort of funny to read, until you think about what its real messages are."[22] Robert Harris notes the formulaic beginnings, but feels that the characters make the manga enjoyable.[23] Leroy Douresseaux found the character of Takumi unconvincing, describing him as a "cheap plot trick" to rescue Misaki when needed.[24] Carlo Santos felt the premise was "otaku-tastic", but appreciated the lack of fanservice and panty shots in the maid cafe scenes, feeling that these marked the series as being shōjo. He also appreciated the chemistry between the leads, and the humour, but noted the stereotypical plot, and criticises the layouts and overly-talky characters.[25] Connie C. described the second volume as reminding her that plot devices are plot devices because "they work wonderfully if used right", feeling that the sense of humour and character interactions lifted the stereotypical plots of the school sports day and rich new classmates.[26]

In a 2019 Forbes article about the best anime of the 2010s decade, Lauren Orsini considered it to be one of the five best anime of 2010; she wrote, "Clever comedy with snappy delivery keeps this show sharp even ten years later".[27]
