Sales of Deere 4430s Escalate

Not that long ago a cherry John Deere 4430 like the one seen here would have been a hot auction item for farmers seeking a chore tractors. The 4430, the most popular of the Generation II Deere’s introduced in 1972, was a reliable workhorse for farmers first in their fields during the 1970s and 80s after which they were often kept by the original owner or bought by a second owner for lighter-duty field chores such as baling or running an auger.

But increasing interest in this vintage horsepower by antique tractor collectors has set the stage for bidding wars at auction between farmers and collectors. 

An example of this occurred right in front of me at the Wieman Auction’s (wiemanauction.com) December consignment sale held near Marion, South Dakota. While covering the auction for the Successful Farming television show I witnessed a farmer and a collector going bid-to-bid on a 1978 IHC 684 tractor. The final bid on the tractor was $5,700.

The animosity being expressed by the farmer toward the collector beating him out of the sale was noticeable. I overhead the farmer mutter something about “that tractor needs to be working, not sitting in a collection.” 

Such drama aside, the trend toward collecting 1970s tractors keeps expanding. Interest in 100-hp.-plus models is particularly keen as evidenced by some of the sale price on Deere 4430s seen below.

Columbus, TXI've got my eye on a 74 model JD 4430. I'd like to know all about them, the good and the bad. I mainly want it to just plant with a 6 row planter (maybe an 8) and to pull a 500 gallon sprayer with hydraulic pump. Tractors I have now are way over kill and I want something smaller. It has a quad range transmission and I like the idea of both PTOs for doing some shredding around some places and I could pull our hay baler with it also. Tractor probably wouldn't be used for any tillage. The tractor is a pretty good ways from me so I'm trying to get all of the info that I can from y'all. Seems to be in decent shape from pictures, cab interior is rough but they are putting a new cab kit in as we speak. Fella is supposed to drive it around and get it good and hot and make sure there aren't leaks and all of that. Any info on a JD 4430 tractor would be very much appreciated.

Pierce county WINot as good as a 4440. Harder starting, not as much power, not built as heavy. Later ones were updated, even similar final drives to a 40. 1974 is early. If you can swing a 40, do it. Otherwise, 30s are ok for what they cost.

The 40 series had significantly better fuel economy than the 30.  My experience with a 4430 was that the air conditioner required a fair amount of service to keep it working.

If I'm going to spend that much for an old tractor I'd rather spend the same amount or a little bit more for an old Magnum. I wish I could swing a 4440 but it's not in the cards. We're 4430s just a sorry tractor or what?

WisconsinDeere took the 4320, put the sound Gard cab on it, and asked it to do a ton more work. That's the reason why it gets a poor rap, it's just a re bodied 20 series.

Faunsdale, ALThe turbocharged 404 engine lacks low rpm torque compared to the 466 that replaced it when the 40 series came out. Keep the rpm up and do not lug it and you will be very satisfied. Cold starting was also less than great compared to some other tractors. Still a very similar tractor to the 4440.

Lineage was 4020, 4320 add turbo, 4430 add SoundGuard cab, 4440 change to 466 engine and some rear end and final drive upgrades, 4450, 4455.....etc.

Biggest changes were between the first 4 models.

All have the JD swappable 540/1000 rpm pto. 4520 and 46XX tractors and above were 1000 rpm only.

First tractor i ever bought was a 4430. Owned it for 8 years, and split it 4 times. Every other year. And it needed it again when i traded it.

I think they upgraded a lot of the drive train, and if you find an upgraded unit you might be alright. As for me, it will be a cold day in july before i EVER own another 30 series. Showboat

Freeland MichiganI have a 1975 4430 and it works good for me. Like others have said, not the best cold starters, I went to two 12 volt batteries and a new starter and am confident of it starting down to about 30. Below that I plug in the block heater for about two hours and have been good to go down to 10. I replaced all the AC lines and compressor with a sanden kit from AP air and haven't had to touch it in eight years. It will have no problem pulling what you have mentioned, just keep in mind that below 1500 rpm in a hard pull they fall on their face fast.

I agree. I did a lot of work with a 4430 and it served me well doing harder work than the OP wants to do with it. There’s risk with any used tractor, more so the older they get. If it’s a good one, you will be satisfied. There’s used up 4440’s and boxcar Magnums out there, too.

A pump shop can fix the low end torque issue easily.

ecmnfor what you are looking to do its a great tractor.

get an nipendenso planetary starter and turn down the aneroid screw in and you have a better starting tractor with great low end power.

very light nimble tractor that can get a lot done for there price and age.


KSWhy does the 4430 404 lack low end so bad. We still have a 4020 with an M&W turbo that has awesome low end torque and our other 4020's and 4010's always seemed fine. And I don't remember our 4320's having that bad of low end. The two 4430's we had were awful in low end torque.

The experience we had on our 8640 turning the aneroid screw did little for low end torque. All it did was make it smoke like a locomotive.


SW OhioVery approved here. First one we got from a jockey, maybe mid 80's 6000 hrs, was running strong, did all the heavy tillage, chopped 2000 ton of silage a year, only tore the top shaft out when my nephew tried to dig a pond with it, that is when we found out it was cranking close to 200hp, turned it down to 160 and it is still my favorite tractor, nearing 15000+ hrs and have not worked on motor yet. second one is the spray tractor, not near as strong but lives on the 1000 gallon most of the time because tires are set wide. Both get used here all the time and we have 17 tractors to chose from......

West Central IndianaGranddad bought this one new, over 10K hours never been split. Engine, transmission, clutch, and hydraulic pump all original. Maybe your problem was the operator not the tractor. Also this one has had the loader on less than 1000hrs. It has worked and planted 1000’s of acres.

West Central IAAnaroid on inj pump not set up correctly is why no low end. I have a 4430 that I believe will out pull my 4630 any day of the week. It has low end to no end. Is a smoker so I know the anaroid is screwed down good. I can start 950 bu on wagons in b1 at an idle and it will just open up when you hit the throttle. My 46 was a dog until I reset the anaroid and now it has pretty good low end.

I have 3 4430s ,2 74s and a 75. They upgraded then steering on the 1975s same as later JDs 1974s have the same  steering  system as a 4020.  They came with heavier final drives on the 75s . Most 74s have been changed over mine has. Dad bought the 1974 QR new now has 6500 hrs never overhauled installed wide final drive at 2500hrs. Now just use on round baler and sprayer does great. Have the other 1974 a PS ona loader bought used with 9000 hrs . The 1975 4430   Dad bought with 900hrs now has 5000 use it on my 956 moco  and other odd jobs really no more tillage work for any of them. The 75 tractor is probally my favorite to drive and will start a little better when really cold.  You can make the AC work great just like a 50 series and I believe you would be happy with one . Ronm or KTA could tell you all the upgrades in the 4430  series.



SW IowaI bought a '73 shyncro (with well over 12k hours) back in '12. Dealer didn't want it back then, paid $9500. Since then I've put a 1000 hrs on it pulling a 568 all summer and a 500 bu cart in the fall. Only thing I've done is a water pump, new bushings in the wide front, and updated the air. Have no idea what the talk about "no low end power" is, its turning 160hp and has no trouble doing what I need. Sometimes a Quad would work better but for the money invested I'm happy.

They're OK as long as you're not trying to do heavy tillage with them - or other high-horsepower jobs.

The 404 engine was being used at the top end of its capability in the 4430. If you used it hard, and that often lead to expensive issues. If the demands are kept in line with what the 404 can actually do (think "more like a 4020 with a little more zip") then they're OK.

Two of my neighbors in Nevada had 4430's. One used it as if it were a cheaper 4440 - and every other winter, it seemed as tho he needed to split it or gut it for some reason.  I'm talking stuff like trying to pull a five-shank ripper. I pulled a five-shank ripper on my outfit with a 4640 that had been turned up to 4840 power levels. I can't imagine trying to pull a five-shank ripper with a 4430, but he did it.

The other neighbor used his 4430 about as you're saying you'll use yours - planting, pulling a baler (our balers in the Great Basin have their own engines, so there was no PTO involvement), fertilizer carts, surface tillage (blanket harrows, s-tines, that sort of thing). His issues were that it wasn't a great tractor to try starting in the cold, but other than that, it did what was needed on the farm. Sadly, his tractor burned up when the battery cross-over cable shorted against the transmission. I always put the battery cables in the Deere machines inside extra rubber hoses where they cross over to try to prevent this - and then I'd change the hose out every year.

The quad-range transmission would be my preference in a transmission in the '30's and '40's Deere tractors.  



NE IowaMy 76 4430 has over 10,000 hrs and has been putting out 180 hp since new and other than the a new head gasket, and an oversized turbo from Marv and zipps in New Hampton, IA the motor has never been touched. I pulled a 24 ft JD 980 fc for many years and always has plenty of power. My low end torque was helped greatly when I disabled the aneroid on the fuel pump.

I will agree the guys I know that curse the 4430 never had any business owning a 4430. They should have owned a larger tractor.
Dad has a 4430 north of 12000 hours and has been a excellent tractor. But its spent its days baling hay, spraying, ect ect. The heavy field work is left to be done with tractors meant to do that job.

There's certainly the possibility that the operator had something to do with those issues.......but, in my defense, I'll also mention that I traded that tractor for a 4440, which I still have. 10k hours, and it's NEVER been in the shop. showboat

At the time they were made the 4430 was the second biggest JD two wheel drive. What were you supposed to use for the heavy work if it was supposed to be for baling, spraying, etc.? The IH 1066 would have been the equivalent and I always thought they were considered the workhorse.

Jefferson MA77 model here. Had it for 5 years. Mows and bales in some pretty good hills. Replaced a 4020 which wasn't enough weight and brakes with a wagon full of bales behind it.

Perfect for these jobs. Powershift would be best, but a quad range is OK. Would not want a synchro for these jobs.

Not easy on fuel at full PTO rpm. I run at 1800 and have plenty of power and save a good amount for fuel. My AC works just fine. Needs a bit of weight in the front. If you work at night, plan on some upgraded lights. Originals are not the best.

4440 is way over kill for what you want and will cost way more too.

just a tish NE of central NDThere were quite a few 4430's here one time. Folks used them for everything.seeding and tilage, pto work,Sprayers,haying/baleing/ and loader tractors/chore tractors. Even a few with dozer blades on them.Not many really ever ended up in the local salvage and are still being used for something somewhere.....They did a lot of work.
What was the comparable IH tractor of that time frame and how do they conpare today? Just wondering..

NDWe bought the 1975 4430 in about 1980 & still have it. Had about 2500 hrs when we traded a '69 4020 PS for it, used it on a 24' LLA drill, then a 30' 9300 press drill, 6r30 71 Flex planter then a 12r22 7100 planter, pulled a 5x14 semi mounted plow for several years, it shared the role of farming at the time with a MF 1135 which was the tillage tractor. It has excellent steering or handling, super good Hyd & remotes, starting isn't good in under 35 deg but plugging in for 2 hrs is good, its the yard tractor now with a Allied 795 loader. Has 8060 hrs with no engine work, just into rear end for a shifting problem & replacement of 5k in parts & this includes new main clutch as long as I was in there & new pto clutches. Have really enjoyed the tractor-the biggest change years ago for tillage was the JD 8440. 4WD for tillage in any brand sure beats a 2WD.

45 years old for the first ones. I buy and sell about 50 tractors a year almost a paying hobby as I enjoy it.For what its worth the [NICE] JD 40/50/55 series have actually appreciated in value the last few years due to some of the problems with the newer computer and electrical issues.I have taken 4440s that I have sold in trade and if taken care of they are worth the same as 3 years ago.To me I bought a nice 5200 hour 8300MFD for $53K and a 4455 2WD 8200 hours for $32K the 8300 is a lot more tractor for the money.Make sure you have updated A/C as that can be a problem on older ones.There can be 50% difference in 4430s of the same year due to tires ,hours,and options. The main thing is not to buy one with problems.I bought the nicest 4430 original I have seen and my offer was $2K above JD tradein price and it was sold in a day.

Many years ago a good friend of mine had 3 -1086's all high hour units. He decided he needed a green one. Steve traded the highest hour one off for a very low hour 4430. It was the sickest tractor I ever operated. He had it to 3 different JD dealers, pump/inj were gone thru. He was using premium #2 fuel in it the same as the 1086's. It simply was a lemon. I hope they aren't all that way.

The John Deere 4430 row-crop tractor used the John Deere diesel engine.
