  • Incompatibility issues

How to Fix Apple CarPlay Not Working

There are many different car systems beyond your iPhone, which makes it challenging to troubleshoot CarPlay issues. Whether the issue is no sound, no connection, or apps aren’t working, we’ve lined up some helpful fixes and tips in this guide to help you get CarPlay working again.

Preliminary Checks

Before trying any of the fixes below, here are some things to check:

  • The first thing to check is that your iPhone and car’s infotainment system are turned on. If your car has an activate option, make sure that it’s selected.
  • Check that your country region supports Apple CarPlay because it’s not available everywhere.
  • Check that CarPlay is compatible with your vehicle. If you’re not sure, check your car’s manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer. If your car stereo isn’t compatible, you can get a compatible aftermarket stereo from brands like Alpine, Clarion, Blaupunkt, JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood or Sony.
  • Make sure that your iPhone has the latest iOS version and that it supports CarPlay (iPhone 5 and newer).
  • Check whether your car has the most recent firmware installed. If you’re using an aftermarket stereo, check for a firmware update from the manufacturer’s website to get instructions on how to update it.
  • Unpair the iPhone from your car and try pairing it again. This usually helps when the Bluetooth connection between the phone and your car’s infotainment system gets corrupted. 
  • Unpair any other Bluetooth devices connected to your iPhone that may interfere or conflict with the device and your car as you use CarPlay.

1. Check Your Connection

You can connect to your CarPlay stereo using a USB cable or a wireless connection. If you’re using a USB cable, check it physically to ensure it’s not damaged or loose or try with a different cable to a different USB port if you have one.

If you choose to use a wireless connection, enable Bluetooth and WiFi under Settings on your iPhone.

  1. To enable WiFi, open Settings > WiFi.
  1. Tap WiFi and toggle its switch to on/green to enable it.
  1. Next, tap Settings again, tap Bluetooth and toggle its switch to on/green to enable it.

2. Restart Your iPhone and Your Car’s Infotainment System

If CarPlay doesn’t work after trying different connections, check whether the CarPlay logo appears on your car’s display. If not, restart your iPhone and your car.

Use these steps to restart your iPhone based on your iPhone model:

  • For iPhone SE (1st generation) or iPhone 5 models, press and hold the top button to power the iPhone off and back on.
  • For iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 6, 7 and 8 models, press and hold the side button to power off your device and turn it back on.
  • For iPhone X or newer models, press and hold either the volume and side buttons and then press the side button again to turn it on.

Note: To restart the car’s infotainment system, check the vehicle’s user manual for instructions. After restarting the devices, try using CarPlay with your iPhone again to check if the problem persists.

3. Make Sure Siri is Enabled

If your vehicle supports Siri Eyes Free, you can hold down the voice-command on your steering wheel to make your request. However, if Siri is disabled, you won’t be able to use it with CarPlay.

  1. To enable Siri, open Settings > Siri & Search.
  1. Enable the following options: Allow Siri when locked, Listen for Hey Siri and Press Side button for Siri or Press Home for Siri.

4. Make Sure CarPlay isn’t Restricted

If CarPlay doesn’t detect your iPhone, check that the service isn’t restricted on your iPhone.

  1. To do this, open Settings on your iPhone and tap Screen Time.
  1. Next, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  1. Tap yourcar and then tap Forget This car. Follow the steps in our guide to set up Apple CarPlay again.

5. Check Whether CarPlay is Allowed While Locked

If CarPlay still isn’t working after trying the checks and fixes we’ve listed so far, check whether it’s allowed while locked.

  1. To do this, open Settings on your iPhone and tap General > CarPlay.
  1. Tap Your Car.
  1. Next, toggle the switch next to Allow CarPlay While Locked to enable it if it’s off.

6. Disable USB Restricted Mode

USB Restricted Mode is an iOS feature that protects iOS user data from passcode hackers who use USB devices to hack your passcode via Lightning ports. The feature disables the USB data connection internally after some time.

  1. To disable the feature, open Settings on your iPhone and tap Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
  1. Type your passcode if prompted and go to the Allow Access When Locked section.
  1. Next, tap USB Accessories and toggle its switch to ON to disable USB Restricted Mode.

Note: Once you disable the feature, Lightning-based phone accessories can work even when your iPhone is locked. However, disabling USB Restricted Mode leaves your iPhone at risk to certain threats. But if you’re okay with it, you can keep it disabled while using CarPlay and enable it when you don’t need it.

7. Reset All Settings

Sometimes issues with apps on your iPhone can change some system settings that may cause CarPlay not to work properly. In this case, resetting all system settings to default will get everything back in order.

  1. To reset all your iPhone settings, open Settings > General > Reset.
  1. Tap Reset All Settings, follow the prompts to complete the process, and check whether CarPlay works properly again.
  1. You can also reset your phone’s network settings as network-related errors may have disrupted or ruined the connection between your iPhone and CarPlay. To clear and reset network settings on iPhone, open Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
  1. Enter your iPhone passcode and tap the option to confirm the reset. Once completed, your iPhone will restart automatically and load the default network options. However, you’ll need to re-enable WiFi and Bluetooth to use them with CarPlay again.

How to Fix Apple CarPlay Connection Issues

If you are experiencing connection issues with your iPhone and Apple CarPlay you’ll want to check the basics first:

Are you using the correct USB cable? Cheaper aftermarket USB cables are often the cause of not being able to connect

Is it connected to the right port? Depending on your vehicle or aftermarket stereo, for CarPlay to work you need to use specific USB ports.

Do you have the most up to date firmware installed in the stereo?

Now if you’ve gone through those steps and can’t get CarPlay to connect or if it keeps dropping the connection after a few minutes (especially for those using iOS 11) here’s a quick fix that worked on our Pioneer AVH-4200NEX.

 

  1. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay > Tap on Forget This Car

  4. Restart your phone

 

 

And there you have it, all we had to do is remove the stereo from the CarPlay settings, add it back and restart the phone. Basically this is the modern day equivalent of taking out your Super Mario Brothers cartridge, blowing on it and putting it back in to get your Nintendo to work.

How to Fix It When Apple CarPlay is Not Working

  • Make sure CarPlay is enabled on your iPhone. A variety of settings could be interfering with the CarPlay connection. For example, if you've turned CarPlay off, you'll need to re-enable it. To do that, go to Settings > General > CarPlay and reconnect your vehicle to the app. Or to re-enable it if you've turned it off in Screen Time, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.

  • Check to make sure Siri is enabled. Siri needs to be enabled for CarPlay to work. If it's not, go to Settings > Siri & Search and make sure the following options are enabled:

    • Listen for "Hey Siri"
    • Press Side Button for Siri
    • Allow Siri When Locked

    The Allow Siri When Locked option is the one that most often trips people up because it isn't always enabled.

  • Make sure CarPlay is enabled when locked. If CarPlay isn't enabled when locked, it can't activate if your phone screen is turned off. To rectify this, go to Settings > General > CarPlay and tap your car from the list of available connections. Then toggle on Allow CarPlay While Locked.

  • If not connected wirelessly, check your USB cables. If you're using the original iPhone USB cable, check it to ensure none of the wires are frayed or broken. If you're using an aftermarket cable, try a different one. Sometimes, just switching out the cable will solve whatever problem you may be experiencing.

  • If you're not connected wirelessly, make sure you're plugged into the correct port. There are multiple USB connections in many modern vehicles, but they won't necessarily all work to connect CarPlay to your vehicle. Look for the CarPlay or iOS icon. If you don't see one of those, try each available USB port on your infotainment system to see if one of them is specific to your CarPlay connection.

  • If your car supports a wireless connection to CarPlay, check your iPhone to make sure you're not in Airplane Mode. Airplane Mode prevents your phone from making any wireless connections, so this could be preventing your phone from communicating with your vehicle

  • If you're using a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is on, and the iPhone is connected to the car. If your Bluetooth is off, you won't be able to connect the device.

    While you're connecting your Bluetooth, this might be a good time to remove any old Bluetooth connections that you no longer use. It's unlikely (but still possible) that these old connections will interfere with your connection, but it's best to remove them to be on the safe side.

  • Restart your iPhone, and then restart your vehicle. Sometimes turning everything off and then back on will clear whatever error you're experiencing, and things will connect just fine the second time around.

  • Make sure your iPhone is fully updated. If your phone is not updated, you may not have the necessary drivers or software to complete the connection to CarPlay. Updating could help resolve any issues you might be having.

  • Forget and reestablish your CarPlay connection. You'll need to go into Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle you're trying to connect to. Then tap Forget This Car. Then, restart your vehicle and your iPhone and try to re-establish the connection.

    • If your car supports a wireless connection, go to Settings > General > CarPlay and tap Available Cars. Then select your car to create the connection.
    • If you're using a wired connection, reconnect the USB cable and follow any on-screen prompts that appear.

    Not sure if this will help, as you said you made sure you checked if it was in USB 1. I pulled out the entire headset, and while the unit was telling me it was in USB 1, and the phone was charging, when I looked on the rear of the unit, I was in USB 2.

    A quick way to check this if you're not eager to pull the unit out, have someone w/ Android Auto connect to your stereo. If it opens after you tell the unit "other" for smartphones, the USB connection leads to USB 2 in the rear.

    Worth a try, worked for me.

    In addition, be sure to buy lightning cables that have support for data transfer. Not all USB cables support this, especially the cheap ones. So be sure to take this into consideration. 

     

     

    6. Restart Your Bluetooth. 

    Bluetooth is one of the primary ways of how your iPhone and head unit connect with one another. There are times where your Bluetooth radio encounters temporary glitches and thinks that it is still connected to the previous device that you paired with. 

    In this case, you can try to restart your Bluetooth on both your iPhone and the car’s head unit if applicable.

    CarPlay Not Working After iOS Update, How To Fix

    Roughly a year and a half ago I successfully upgraded one of our cars stereos with a new Pioneer AVH-4200NEX head unit.  The install was simple and the result was updating what was a mid 2000 era head unit with one which supported Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and hands free calling.  All was well until this past week when Apple CarPlay quit working.

    Symptoms

    • USB Connection no longer charges devices
    • Error displayed indicating USB connection is not supported and that the device will be disabled for protection purposes
    • Error displayed “no response” when connecting the phone

    My first step in troubleshooting this issue was to upgrade both the Pioneer head unit and iPhones to the latest firmware version.

    Pioneer Head Unit: AVH-4200 NEX with firmware version 0.6

    iPhone X with iOS Version: 11.4.1

    The Fix

    Upgrading the firmware versions did not resolve the issue but changed the error from “USB is not supported…” to “no response”.  Further investigation led to review of the discovered Apple CarPlay devices on each phone.  Since we’ve both been traveling there were a number of rental cars which had registered with our phones.  Clearing all of the registered devices including our head unit resolved the issue.

    iPhone Steps (version 11.4.1):

    Note: Disconnect your phone from your head unit before performing these steps.

    1. Open Settings -> General -> CarPlay
    2. Under MY CAR select each discovered CarPlay system and select “Forget This Car”. The Pioneer unit will show up as “AV Receiver”
    3. Repeat removal for all entries which are listed
    4. Reconnect phone to head unit and accept prompts allowing the receiver to access your phone.

    Apple CarPlay

    Check if CarPlay is available in your country or region

    CarPlay is not supported everywhere. Check Apple’s website to see countries and regions that CarPlay is currently available.

    Check if Siri is turned on

    Siri needs to be enabled for CarPlay to function

    On your iOS device: Head over to Settings > Siri & Search. Ensure that these options are enabled:

    • Listen for “Hey Siri”.
    • Press Home for Siri or Press Side Button for Siri.
    • Allow Siri When Locked.

    Check if CarPlay is allowed while locked 

    On your iOS device: head over to Settings > General > CarPlay > Your Car > and turn on “Allow CarPlay While Locked”.

    Moreover, ensure that CarPlay is not restricted. On your iPhone: head over to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

    Check if your iPhone and your car’s infotainment system are turned on

    If you are unable to connect

    If you are having problem connecting  iPhone to CarPlay. There are two ways to connect iPhone to CarPlay, depending on your car:

    1. Simply plug in your iPhone using a USB cable. If you are having issues:
    • If you are using a third-party USB cable, ensure that it’s Apple certified, especially if you see the
      “this accessory is not supported by this device”
      error.
    • Try connecting to a different USB port.
    • Try using a different USB cable.
    • Check to ensure that the USB cable is plugged in properly.
    • Check to ensure that both the charging port and the USB port are clean and there are no damages.
    • Turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone, wait for about ten seconds and turn it back off. Head over to
    • Settings > Airplane Mode).

    • Restart your iPhone.
    • Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone. (Check out this article if you
      cannot turn on Bluetooth).
    • Restart your car’s infotainment system. To do this: press and hold the volume or power knob.

    Update all your devices

    iPhone not detecting CarPlay? Try updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version. You can
    update your iPhone over the air. Simply follow these steps:

    • Ensure that your iPhone is connected to the Internet.
    • Then head over to Settings > General > Software Update.
    • If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
    • And follow the onscreen prompts.

    If you are using an aftermarket receiver, please visit the manufacturer’s website to find out if a firmware update is available and if there is, learn how you can update.

    Restart all your devices

    Restart your car’s infotainment system, car and your iPhone. Simply follow these steps to restart your iPhone:

    • To restart iPhone X or newer: Press and hold down the power (side or top) and volume up (or down) buttons together until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn it off. Then turn it back on by pressing and holding the power button until you see the apple logo.
    • To restart other iPhone models: Press and hold the side or top button until you see the power off slider. Drag the slider. Then turn it back on by pressing and holding the side or top button until you see the Apple logo.

    Moreover, you can restart your car’s infotainment system. This is done differently depending on cars and models. For instance, some receivers requires you to press and hold down the audio system power knob for about ten seconds. Note, this might be different for your car.     Forget and set up

    If you are still experiencing problem connecting iPhone to CarPlay, try to re-setup. Simply follow these steps:

    • On your iPhone, head over to Settings > General > CarPlay > your car > Forget This Car.

    Now try to set up again. Follow these steps:

    Depending on your car:

    • Simply connect iPhone to car radio via USB cable.
    • If your car supports wireless CarPlay, head over to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap Available cars, and then select your car to connect iPhone to CarPlay.
