My First Experience Framing with Smallwoods Home

Anyone else throwing themselves into house projects as a way of coping/distracting themselves this month? Home-related things have been a pretty solid go-to for me lately, and I’ve heard that by the crowds at Home Depot and Lowe’s, I’m not alone.

A fly on the wall would probably think I’m ridiculous for how often I’ve walked aimlessly around our home dreaming up new design ideas in bathrooms, hallways, and bedrooms alike. I fall asleep every time I try to watch TV and there’s only so many rounds of UNO I can play with my kids, so I guess I’ll just organize this whole dang house in the meantime. 😉 Seriously, I never knew that organizing underneath my kitchen sink would bring me so much joy. We have reached a new limit of “lame” here, folks.

By the third weekday of quarantine, I found myself on crossing off a “to do” list item that had been there for month: create a framed collage of the girls’ newborn photos. I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I would hang it, but I knew that I wanted to have a wall with newborn photos.

Long story short, a social media ad led me to Smallwoods, and within 45 minutes I’d picked my design, uploaded pictures, and paid my moolah! Six days later, these six beautiful frames arrived on my door, and I think my family thought I was absolutely bananas as I squealed with delight after opening.

I haven’t stopped talking with family and friends about how obsessed I am with Smallwoods, so it only makes sense that I shout my absolute approval here too. 😉

For $82* with tax and shipping, I receive these six 13×13″ framed pictures ready to hang. The images are printed like canvases with quality that totally knocked my socks off. The frames are lightweight but exceptional, and the packaging was top notch. I could not be more pleased with the product.

The process to create these was not only incredibly easy for me as a first-time user, but it was fun too!

  1. I created the IG Minis, selected straight from the main homepage.

2. Linked my IG.

3. Select your grid. I selected the 2×3.

4. Tap to upload your image.

5. Select your frame color (stain, almond, black or white). I selected almond.

6. DONE!

A user can also select images from the computer by uploading files, which is what I did since I had some of the high-resolutions photos on my desktop.

Speaking of, while some of these are high-resolution prints, the bottom right is simply an iPhone picture. The quality is just as wonderful! So don’t let that deter you. If the quality and resolution is questionable, you’ll be notified during the creation process. No worries!

*The price I paid at the time was due to a promotion Smallwoods was running, so your price may alter. They seem to always be running sales though!

In Summary

Anyway, just wanted to share this easy, affordable framing option with you! My expectations were far exceeded, and I’ll be ordering from Smallwoods Home again, no questions asked.

I’d recommend playing around on their website and seeing how easy it would be to create your own custom framed piece. They have so many sizing options for shocking prices. (A 25″x17″ framed piece right now is only $49! Wowweee! Hello Mother’s Day presents!)

Hi! I’m Erica, and I absolutely adore sharing my life on this website with you! I come here almost daily to blab about all of the things related to being a regular wife and mother in today’s ever-evolving society. I share about our new home, what’s on our kitchen table, what we’re hanging in our closets, where we’re traveling to next, my crazy 5 a.m. work outs, how I make time for girlfriends, our faith, and much more. We always have a lot of balls in the air and somewhat thrive on the chaos. I believe in the power of story-telling as a form of inspiration and entertainment, so I’m here to do both! I was born and raised in north Alabama and recently re-planted roots here again after my husband transitioned out of the Army (he is now in the Reserve and it’s going so well!) I’m a super proud mom to three little girls (ages 7, 4, and 1) who seem to be the stars of the show around here (for good reason – they’re pretty great!) I’m so glad you found me and are here reading! I hope we can get to know each other here on the blog as well as Facebook and/or Instagram. xoxo

Frequently Asked Questions

What did I buy at Smallwoods for framed photos?

Bought 2 small framed canvas prints for a dear friend as wedding presents. They totally LOVED them. I loved them so much I plan to order several for myself! Such quick and amazing customer service and they stand by their product. Love, Love Love! What a Special Addition to my home!

Is the print the same on Smallwood home?

No where on your website says your black and white color changes and to check before you buy. I bought the same print in black and white but it is not the same black and white you guys have used in the past. Everyone is rude and says it's my fault for not asking before purchasing although it says nothing on your website that you make those changes.

What are the customer reviews of

Is this your business? Smallwoods has a consumer rating of 2.63 stars from 139 reviews indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Consumers complaining about Smallwoods most frequently mention customer service, high resolution and phone number problems.

How big of a canvas can I print?

Our canvas prints come in a variety of sizes, from desktop-ready small-format prints to supersize 40” x 60” prints. If you’re interested in one of our largest formats, make sure you upload a high-resolution photo. Then we’ll be able to ensure you get the very best printing results.

The Best Online Framing Services

Why you should trust us

I’ve been writing about home decor for Wirecutter for two years. I’ve also used custom framers and framed my own art myself, so I’m familiar with the varying levels of quality you might get. In addition to reading reviews from sites such as Apartment Therapy, Architectural Digest, Huffington Post, and Vox, I interviewed a colleague, Wirecutter kitchen writer Michael Sullivan, who worked in a framing shop for three years. I then researched 13 online framing services and ordered prints from five of them.

When to use an online framing service

Using an online framing service falls in between buying a ready-made frame and going to a custom shop. It’s convenient, and it usually offers several customization options and some personalized assistance. Online services are usually less expensive than a local frame shop, too. Most of the services we tested charge between $70 and $90 to frame an 8-by-10-inch piece—a price that’s similar to what a local framing shop might charge for a very basic frame, but less than what it would cost to frame something with a custom mat, frame style, or glazing (glass or acrylic applied to protect the art).

But online framing can’t replace the top-notch quality and care that you receive in person at a shop. The majority of the frames we received in our tests looked professional and felt sturdy, but the materials weren’t as high quality as those of a custom frame, and none of the online services we tried offered glass glazing, only acrylic plexiglass. Acrylic is lighter and harder to break than glass but also easier to scratch (something we noticed often in our tests). Online services also usually offer less customization—fewer frame styles and mat colors—so if you have a specific look in mind, you’ll probably prefer to go local.

How we picked and tested

Five versions of the same print framed by five online framing services featured in our review of best online framing services
Three similar art prints framed by three of the companies reviewed in our review of best online framing services

We mainly focused on full-service companies that printed and framed photos (you can submit photos in JPEG format) as well as framed art, and we mostly avoided those that ship empty frames for self-assembly. We did, however, try one self-framing service to see how it measured up.

We used the following criteria to determine the best overall service:

  • Well-made frames and quality prints: We looked for solid, sturdy frames that arrived without damage (either from shipping or assembly), with well-glued dust covers (the backing) and properly aligned mounting hardware. We also examined each photo print to see how the color and clarity compared.
  • An easy and clear ordering process: We noted each service’s customization options, including the glazing, mat size and color, frame style, dust cover, and mounting hardware. A good service offers a simple process that makes it clear what you’re ordering. Some sites, such as Simply Framed, were too glitchy for us to get an accurate preview of our print.
  • Order accuracy: We planned to order only 8-by-10 prints, but some of the services made it so confusing to order that we wound up with the wrong size. Even when we did order correctly, we sometimes received the wrong-size print or mat color.
  • Great customer support: Any online business, especially a creative one, should have excellent customer service. It was critical that the companies were easy to reach and able to assist us quickly when we had a problem with our order.
The backs of the six framed art pieces by the five online framing services we reviewed, showing quality of framing and wall mounting materials

We looked at the backings and noted each company’s attention to detail. From left: 1. Framebridge, 2. Artifact Uprising, 3. Frameology, 4. Simply Framed, 5. and 6. Level Frames. Photo: Sarah Kobos

A close-up of the mounting hardware and wire hanging cords used in the frames produced by Framebridge, Level Frames, and Artifact Uprising, from our review of the best online framing services

The mounting hardware is also important to note. Good hardware, with a tightly wound wire coil and a securely mounted bracket, can make hanging up the frame easier. Clockwise from top: Framebridge, Level Frames, Artifact Uprising. Photo: Sarah Kobos

A close-up of the corners of two picture frames, one produced by Simply Framed, and one by Artifact Uprising, showing the quality of frame construction for our review of the best online framing services

Most frames (such as the one from Simply Framed, right) had at least one corner that didn’t sit flush. Only Artifact Uprising’s frame (left) was put together perfectly. Photo: Sarah Kobos

We tested three services that framed both art and photos, and two that framed only digital photos. In all, we ordered five framed photos, as well as three framed art prints from Poketo. We selected approximately the same option each time: a slim black gallery frame with a white mat. Each service had different customization options, including mat size, plexiglass upgrades (UV blocking or antiglare), backing type, and hanging style (sawtooth or wire); no company we tested offered real glass as an option. By keeping our orders as simple as possible, making no adjustments to the recommended options, we were able to see how tasteful the default styles looked.

Every service delivered a well-wrapped frame, and they all produced decent digital prints, but the framing standards varied widely. To check frame quality, we looked to see whether anything was chipped, whether the corner seams were especially visible, and whether the plexiglass was scratched. Finally, we examined the back to see whether the mounting hardware was placed correctly; in one case, our photo came mounted upside down in the frame.

Our pick: Framebridge

A framed illustration and a framed photo produced by Framebridge, for our review of the best online framing services

Our pick

The do-it-all frame

Framebridge is easier to use and offers more-customizable products than any other framer we tested. It will frame most types of art (not just photos), and it’s the only service we tried that offers free design help.

Framebridge is the easiest service we used, and it offers well-made frames available in more styles than you can get from any other service we tried, as well as attentive customer service. Its prices are reasonable compared with those of other framing services and custom shops, and it’s one of only a few companies that offer framing for both photos and original art. We found some minor damage on one of our Framebridge frames, but its customer service was quick to correct the problem.

Although its quality was a close second to that of Artifact Uprising (our runner-up), we found that the ease of ordering and the great customer service Framebridge offered more than made up for the minor differences in quality.

The process of using Framebridge was much easier than on other services we tried, and this simplicity led to better results. Whereas many of the framing services we tested made it difficult to visualize the final product, Framebridge’s online interface was the easiest to navigate. Framebridge offers enough—but not too many—choices. You select the mat color and style, plus the frame itself, and the company picks the mat size based on the scale of your piece. A competing service, Level Frames, offered more customization options but was too confusing to use, as it allowed for very granular selections such as the exact shade of white for the mat. We found Framebridge’s simpler approach much better: You select the general color (white, cream, black, and the like), and it matches a shade to your art. If you want guidance in picking a frame or mat, note that Framebridge is the only company in our test group that provides a free design service: Submit an image of your art, and one of its designers will create four framing options for you to choose from. (Sometimes another set of eyes can help enhance your piece in unexpected ways.) Our printed photo arrived less than a week after our order, while the art print arrived about two weeks after we sent the order in, timing that was comparable to what we saw from the other services we tried.

The backs of two pieces framed by Framebridge, our pick for best online framing service, showing the frame's back dust cover and mounting brackets

Framebridge delivered two beautifully framed, sturdy pieces that were ready to hang. By contrast, many frames from other services felt flimsy and unfinished, and the one from Frameology was missing hanging hardware. Only Artifact Uprising, our runner-up, made a better frame. The back of the Framebridge frame had a well-glued protective paper dust cover with a solid-foam core that made it feel substantial. The frames we received from Simply Framed also had paper dust covers, but they were poorly glued and felt fragile. Although a dust cover isn’t critical to the integrity of a frame, we think poor workmanship in the finishing steps is a sign of a lower-quality service altogether. Our Framebridge items were well finished, with two felt pads attached in the bottom corners to prevent wall scratches, as well as wire hangers. The results from Frameology and Level Frames lacked felt pads, while the Simply Framed result came with a less-useful sawtooth hanger, which can make leveling a frame difficult.

Framebridge offers flat-rate pricing that includes printing, mats, and shipping, and it costs about the same as other services we tested. An extra-small piece (up to 5 by 7 inches) costs $65, small (up to 9 by 12) costs $85, and medium (up to 18 by 20) costs $100. The service will frame art up to 32 by 40 inches, one of the widest ranges of sizes available from the services we tried (Simply Framed goes up to 40 by 60). Depending on where you live, Framebridge’s prices might be comparable to those of custom framers.

A screenshot of the framebridge website showing its frame selection menu

Framebridge’s ordering system is easier to use than any other we tried. It allows for frame selection, mat size, and art size all in one screen, with an accurate preview.

A screenshot of the framebridge website showing the dropdown menu for mat options.

Although you can find many available mat colors, Framebridge also selects from a variety of shades within that color family to match your art more closely.

Screenshot of the framebridge website showing the dropdown menu for print size.

Framebridge offered one of the widest print-size ranges of the services we considered.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

We received our Framebridge order with a small chip on one of the frames even though it was well packaged and padded with bubble wrap. Chips could happen with any framing service, and when we reached out to Framebridge via its online chat system, the representative quickly resolved the issue—we returned the broken frame, and the company reframed the art for free (the new one took about a week to arrive). Framebridge’s customer support was easier to contact than that of other sites such as Artifact Uprising.

Runner-up: Artifact Uprising

A framed photo produced by Artifact Uprising, our runner-up pick for best online framing service

Artifact Uprising made the highest-quality frame in our test group, but the service doesn’t frame original art, and its ordering system was confusing for us to navigate. Artifact Uprising also took almost twice as long to deliver our frame than any other service. But if you’re framing something that needs to look flawless and you’re willing to work your way through its difficult ordering system, the finished product may be worth the effort.

We found an eye for detail in Artifact Uprising’s framing and printing that no one else matched. Although Framebridge came close in quality, several small details made the Artifact Uprising frame stand out. First, it was the only one that didn’t have any uneven corner seams; every other frame we received had at least one corner where the frame didn’t fit together properly. Second, Artifact Uprising’s frame was carefully backed, with a well-glued dust cover, a taut hanging wire, and four felt pads (on the bottom corners and covering the hanging brackets) to protect the wall; Framebridge’s frame was comparable but had only two protective felt pads. Finally, the photo print itself was clearer than others, and its colors were vibrant but accurate to the original.

The back dust cover and mounting hardware on a frame produced by Artifact Uprising, showing the felt pads that prevent wall scratches from the frame's metal mounting hardware

However, Artifact Uprising’s online system was so confusing, we inadvertently ordered a print that was too small, and the service offered very little customization. The only mat color available is white, and the company picks the size based on the dimensions of your piece. It also offers fewer frame styles than other services do—just four finishes of its basic gallery frame, and three metal frames—and they cost around $15 more than those of Framebridge, depending on what you order. (Artifact Uprising was also slightly more expensive than what a local custom framer quoted us for a very basic frame.) When we realized we had ordered the wrong-size print, Artifact Uprising customer support did offer to correct the order, though it took the representatives a few hours to return our phone call and a few days to get back to us via email. Whereas most services sent us our framed prints within a week, Artifact Uprising took nine business days (almost two weeks) to deliver our frame. We think the high-quality work is worth the wait if you value a well-framed print. But if you’re in a rush, Framebridge’s quality comes close, and that service offers faster results.

The competition

Simply Framed is Frambridge’s main competitor—it too frames original art and prints and frames digital photos—but its website was the most difficult to navigate of any we tested. We found discrepancies between the size displayed in our cart and the preview image, and this issue did not correct itself despite our many tweaks. Although Simply Framed managed to send us the size we wanted plus an attractive mat, its frame was lower quality than the one from Framebridge. The dust cover was sloppily glued and sagged inward instead of remaining taut across the back of the frame.

Level Frames sent us our printed photo mounted upside down. Although we understand that our soothing ocean shot is somewhat ambiguous in its orientation, misframing a photo we sent digitally (not to mention oriented the right way) was sloppy. If you want to frame art, Level Frames will send an empty frame and a mat, but the frame this service sent us had a scratch on the plexiglass. Anyway, if we had wanted to do it ourselves, we could have picked up an empty frame at any store.

A close up of the corner of a frame produced by Level Frames, showing a scratch on the plexiglass, from our review of the best online framing services

We thought we were ordering an 8-by-10-inch print from Frameology, but we ended up with a 5-by-7 piece. The sizing problem was due to the same issue we had with Artifact Uprising: unclear site navigation and ordering. The frame also felt cheap, and even though we had ordered a wall frame, it arrived with an easel back. Although the print looked objectively fine, it was frustrating that Frameology didn’t offer a basic level of customization like mat style or size.

How to Hang Pictures

How to Split a Photo Into Multiple Frames

What Is a Triptych Gallery Wall?

This creative method of making wall art is achieved by splitting a photo into tiles or separate panels, so that two or more images compose the whole, together. For example, think of it like a very basic jigsaw puzzle, but instead of odd shapes, each "piece" is simply a rectangle or square. This way, you're able to frame each image or print it onto canvas to display.

Because they're often done in three panels, you may hear of and opt for creating a "triptych" — and that's specifically what we'll cover. The tips and steps you learn for a triptych gallery wall can easily be applied to a photo split into two, four, or more, once you know the basics!

Finding Your Photo

When shooting specifically for use in a triptych, there are a couple of key photography tips to keep in mind:

It's paramount to keep resolution in mind as you build out a triptych, always aiming high. As reference, most photos from your smartphone, Facebook, or Instagram are automatically set to web-viewing resolution of 72 DPI. But you can always change the DPI of your photos to see how big you can go at print quality.

300 DPI is generally considered a high-quality print resolution (known as giclée), so for large format frames, mobile photos will have a hard time achieving the split effect at scale.

However, you can create a triptych of any size! Photos from your smartphone can be used if you want to create the continuous image illusion with smaller frames, like 5 x 7" or 8 x 10", which work great for walls with less space or smaller nooks of the home. Anything bigger than that will require a larger, higher quality image. (Time to dust off that DSLR, if you have one!)

Rule of Thirds

When considering how your photo is framed and where key points of interest lie, it's important to remember the rule of thirds. For example, placing a horizon line in the upper or lower third of the viewfinder, or orienting your subject slightly off center, will encourage the viewer's eye to move within the frame. Breaking the subject into three parts ensures that each frame can stand on its own, while working as a unit together.

Stitching Photos

It's sometimes difficult to break one photograph perfectly into three parts, and finding a photo with high enough resolution to span all three frames can be part of the challenge. Instead, another solution is to stitch together three individual photos into one larger one, as long as the lighting and subject don't change.

To do so, you'll likely need to shoot separate photos from scratch, like a non-continuous panorama, giving yourself more resolution to work with. We find Photoshop's "Photomerge" tool is really helpful in blending multiple pictures into one seamless image.

Three steps to using Photomerge

Which Images Work Best?

When looking through your photo archives or thinking about the subject you'd like to shoot for your triptych gallery wall, look for horizontally oriented photos. Landscapes, whether of ocean cliffs or rolling hillsides, are great for creating visual interest while fitting thematically into a home or office setting. In addition, consider cityscapes as the subject of your triptych; their geometric elements and architectural details find success in this format, drawing the eye from one panel and connecting it to the next.

Landscape or otherwise, horizontal visual interest is the goal. Graphic elements that can span across frames or canvases, whether they're two, three, or more panels wide, are what give split photo decor its allure.

Editing Your Photo

With triptychs, it's all about continuity and clearly creating connecting elements that span across frames. While colors and filters might be a matter of personal taste, a little contrast can definitely go a long way. The clarity, cropping, and contrast of your photos will keep them from losing the graphic visuals that tie them together.

Ensuring Clarity

Ideally, exporting your files at 100 percent height and width with 300 DPI is the best way to ensure clarity. While exceptions can be made, we wouldn't recommend going below 200 DPI, as you'll begin to see the resolution degrade if you look up close at the images. If you need help blowing up the size of your photos, we've got just the guide to get you there: How to Enlarge Photos. The chart below can also give you an at-a-glance idea of how large you can print a given image file.

Chart of print sizes and resolutions for enlarging photos

Key to breaking up your image is maximizing visual interest and continuity. We find Photoshop's artboard tool helpful for dividing your photo into thirds prior to beginning your project in our website's editor. (You crop your photo into thirds using your computer's native photo editing program as well, so don't be discouraged if you don't have Photoshop!)

Try creating each artboard to be the size of the frame, experiment with your spacing, then export at full resolution. It's fun to isolate elements within each frame to help the triptych's individual pieces feel more intentional. Making sure each frame has a point of interest, if possible, will only make the resulting effect that much stronger.

Pro tip: Keep in mind, the negative space between each framed photo will also need to serve as "negative space" that's been cropped out of your photo. By accounting for the space between frames as well as the additional distance introduced by the mat, you'll create the illusion of continuity, making the final product feel seamless.

Choosing Your Prints

Frame Recommendations

Finally, when it comes to displaying your triptych photography, the most popular method is simply framing each one to create a gallery wall. The easiest and most impactful look to go for is three of the same frames (in size and color), spaced equidistantly apart. When choosing a frame, the thinner its moulding and mat, the better. Minimizing the details and space from one photo to the next will help keep focus on the continuity of the image within it. In fact, sometimes printing these with full bleed is best for the triptych effect.

Need a hand with picking a frame? Our favorite style for this type of decor idea is the Modern Metal Frame, with it's sleek moulding, and our Gallery Frame, offering wood options with a trim profile.

Hanging & Spacing

The spacing between frames is what makes or breaks their visual flow. It's important to consider how far apart you want your frames when you build the files: don't just splice the photo into thirds, because once it's on the wall with room between each frame, your lines may no longer match up. This is where playing with the layout of all three in a program like Photoshop, including the whitespace between them, will assist in visualizing how the image connects through the white space.

Whichever way you choose to to bring this idea to life in your home, just remember that there's no right or wrong way to create a triptych. It's fun to think of the possibilities, and as you're finding the right image, explore editing a few to see which you like best!

Find Your Frames

To hang smallwoods frames how

Nails and hammers are a dangerous mix, especially if you’re living in rental accommodation. Lucky for you, there are tons of ways to get those massive frames on the wall without ruining smooth walls. We’ve scavenged the internet to provide you with the best, nail-free alternatives that won’t take much of your time and energy. These methods are also fun activities, that have the most satisfying results.

Here are three ways to hang heavy frames without damaging your home or office walls:

  1. Command strips to hold up the frame (most effective)
  2. Hook-and-loop tapes (or Velcro) for textured walls
  3. Command hooks for frames that weigh between 50 and 80 pounds

We know you’re itching to mount your art or photo frames using these genius ideas. We also know that you need in-depth, step-by-step instructions on how to go about each option. So, keep reading because we’ve explored all the methods listed above in this post for a clearer understanding. We sure hope it helps!

How To Hang Pictures On Concrete Walls Without Nails

No nails needed to hang pictures on concrete? Sounds unbelievable, but it’s 100-percent possible. Here’s what you’ll need, along with a clear guideline on displaying your pictures on the walls using adhesive hooks:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Pencil
  • Command hook
  • Paper towel

Step 1: Prepare The Wall

Start by cleaning the wall using alcohol, or a similar cleanser, for a firm hold. Water and detergent can work too. Pour your cleaning agent/solution onto a small rag or paper towel and wipe the surface gently. This rids the surface of any unpleasant elements or debris that could hinder the adhesive from achieving a firm grip.

Step 2: Make Visible Markings

Do this using a light pencil, as using a marker will only stain the wall you’ve worked so hard to clean. Mark a visible spot on the exact area you want to install the hook. Be as precise as you can to avoid any costly mistakes.

Step 3: Stick The Adhesive To The Wall

Peel the covering from the command hook and align it with the markings you made in step 2. Once it’s in place, press the hook as hard as you can for up to 30 seconds to make sure it has a solid hold on the surface.

Click here to view this product on Amazon.

Step 4: Allow The Adhesive To Dry

Don’t hang your picture on the hook just yet. Give the adhesive approximately 30 to 60 minutes to do its job and keep the hook tightly stuck on the wall. Later, test the strength of the hook by hanging your heavy picture.

If it falls off, repeat the whole process with a fresh set of command hooks and follow each step more carefully.

How To Hang A Canvas Painting Without Nails

Here’s what you’ll need for a seamless process to hang a canvas painting without nails:

  • Level
  • Four or more command strips
  • Painter’s tape/piece of chalk/pencil

Before you get started, ensure your canvas painting is nowhere near your working area. You wouldn’t want your foot landing on your fancy piece accidentally! With that said, let’s get started:

Step 1: Take the command strips and separate each one by pulling them off. Connect the bottom sides of each strip, one on top of the other. As you connect the sides, you’ll hear a “snap” sound. This is one way to verify the strips’ functionality.

Click here to view this product on Amazon.

Step 2: Separate the strips and paste them on the corners at the back of your canvas painting. How many strips you’ll need depends on the size of your canvas painting. Once you’ve placed them on the back of your canvas painting, unpeel the covering from each command strip.

Step 3. Position your canvas painting on the desired spot and place the level on top of it. Hold the canvas painting in a way that you don’t press the canvas painting to the wall. Once the bubble is at the center of the level, aligned at the top of the canvas, be careful not to adjust the canvas painting any further.

Push the canvas painting on the wall and press it hard until it sticks. If possible, knock on the corners with a little force for a more solid grip.

Hanging Pictures Without Nails On Textured Walls

Textured walls are some of the best forms of walls you’ll ever find in a home. This can quickly change once you drive a single nail right into the surface of the wall. Aside from command strips, you can use two other nail-free alternatives to hang your pictures with zero damage.

Hook-and-Loop Tapes

Popularly known as Velcro, this type of tape provides the perfect solution if you’re one to switch picture positions from time to time. Aside from pictures, the hook-and-loop tape is also great for hanging fabric, window treatments, plaques, and frames on walls.

On a side note, hook-and-loop tapes can also be used to add patterned backings or table skirts to furniture. The strong adhesive backing makes it possible to secure anything and everything.

Washi Tape

Washi tape is among the most cost-effective options when it comes to affixing pictures on the wall. However, this will depend on the weight of the item you want to hang. Some good options to use include sticky putty, masking, double-stick, and packing tapes.

Just stick small pieces of vinyl or tape on all four corners and voilà! Use some great tape, and you’ll notice how much texture, pattern, and color it adds to your room!

How To Hang Art Prints Without Frames

So, you have art prints without frames; that’s no reason to keep them in between your books or under your mattress. You do not need nails to hang a piece of paper, do you? Post art prints on your wall using these handy alternatives:

Binder Clips

Using office supplies for decorative purposes is completely unheard of, which makes it even better. Binder clips are easy to find, really affordable, and can give your wall a classic, industrial look.

Clip your art print onto a clipboard and change the prints as often as you want. Having one or two clipboard prints on the fireplace, bookshelf, or office desk is sure to make a lasting statement to you and your guests.

Clips And Strings

Not only do they bring out that Bohemian vibe, but clips and strings also speak volumes of your creativity. Simply stick decorative strings from one end of the wall to the next with tape, then clip your art prints onto it. The more hanging prints, the better.

Do Command Strips Work For Heavy Pictures?

If you’ve used command strips before, then you understand just how strong they can really be. They work just fine for light and heavy pictures alike. If your picture does not hang for long on the command strip, there must be something you’re not doing right. Here are a few mistakes that most homeowners make without realizing it:

1. Disregarding Weight Guidelines

The thing with command strips is that they clearly indicate just how much weight they can carry. Before buying a command strip, weigh your picture carefully first to determine the right kind of command strip to use.

2. Using Them On Uneven Surfaces

If you have rough walls, you’ll be better off when you make them smooth first before hanging heavy pictures. This applies to walls made of timber, concrete, textured wallpaper, and brick walls.

A sure way to cover up roughness is by using high-quality wallpapers that fit your home’s general design. Read, “15 Faux Brick Wallpapers That Can Transform Any Room Design,” for more tips and ideas.

3. Failure To Prepare Surfaces First

Command strips are most effective on dirt-free, smooth walls. Wipe the spot you want to hang your picture using methylated spirits, alcohol, or other effective cleaning agents. Steer clear from using cleaning wipes or surface sprays. These will hinder the effective bonding of the strips to the wall.

4. Not Pressing Hard Enough

Don’t be afraid to apply an extra form of pressure to your picture once you’ve placed the strips to hang it on the wall. Press along the specific areas you’ve placed the strips and make sure it sticks completely.

5. Adjusting It Once It’s In Place

Use a level to make sure the picture is placed correctly before sticking it to the wall. Adjusting it soon after will only weaken the adhesive and cause the picture to lose its grip and fall. Keep reading to find out the weight limits that different size command strips can accommodate.

A couple placing a big picture frame on their living room wall

How Much Can Command Strips Hold?

As noted earlier, every command strip comes with its own unique size and weight restriction. This information is often listed on the package. The larger strips can handle art or pictures that weigh an excess of 16 pounds. Smaller command strips can only hold up to four pounds.

For hanging anything, it’s recommended that you buy a size that’s a little bigger than the actual weight of your frame or photo. This is worth trying if you doubt whether the strip you purchased can actually handle the weight indicated on the package.

For best results, steer clear from using two command hooks to hang your frame. Once the adhesives of the two strips are pushed together, they can hold a combined weight of 15 pounds. The best thing to do is to use a single strip with a better weight capacity. A good example is the Command Jumbo Utility Hook. This strip can hold a whopping seven-and-a-half pounds and stay firmly plastered on the wall for the longest time.

How Heavy Can You Hang Something Without A Stud?

In case you don’t know, a stud is a strong piece of wood that acts as the frame of a wall. It is located directly underneath the wall. Many homes today have vertical studs that are spaced approximately 16 inches apart from each other. There are also studs that run horizontally.

Studs act as solid foundations for nails or screws when you need to hang something on the wall. Without the studs, you cannot hang more than 10 pounds. As durable and versatile as it is, drywall is extremely weak without a stud beneath it. That’s why you shouldn’t risk using any nails or screws at this point. If you have a picture or frame that’s a lot heavier than 10 pounds, your best option is to use something that won’t ruin your frame once it crashes down unexpectedly.

Because drywall isn’t very sturdy, avoid hanging art and pictures from spots that are void of studs; that is, if you’re using nails or screws. If you’re not, adhesive strips and hooks can serve the same purpose.

With either of these adhesives, you won’t have to worry about missing a stud or searching for any weak spot with a stud finder. Anywhere on the wall is good enough. They each have varying glue strengths, with the maximum carrying a weight of approximately 16 pounds.

When using an adhesive, be sure to follow all the instructions provided above to prevent any accidents.

Amazing Customer Service, Amazing Product

First time ever ordering from smallwoods. I ordered 3 of the XL frames of my little ones. The first order the box came dented and I noticed one of the pictures was pretty badly bent. I reached out to customer service they sent a replacement no hesitation. I then received the new picture and was getting ready to hang them up. Then noticed the other two from my original order were bent as well. Not as bad as the one image but very noticeable . I got those replaced as well. I will definitely continue to use Smallwoods for all of my picture needs. Amazing products.

Perfect for wedding and engagement photos

After our wedding, we wanted to put up photos in our new home. Smallwood allowed us to print a ton of portraits without having to pick and choose only a few. They were so affordable and the quality is too notch. When we saw our photographer again (she did our friends wedding a few months after ours), we showed her the prints from Smallwood and she loved them and even said that she also ordered a bunch from Smallwood as well.
