The Christmas Song
Christmas song written and composed by Mel Tormé (music) and Bob Wells (words)
This article is about the song by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. For other uses, see Christmas music and Christmas Song (disambiguation).
"The Christmas Song" (commonly subtitled "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or, as it was originally subtitled, "Merry Christmas to You") is a classic Christmas song written in 1945[note 1] by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé.
According to Tormé, the song was written in July during a blistering hot summer. In an effort to "stay cool by thinking cool", the most-performed (according to BMI) Christmas song was born. "I saw a spiral pad on his (Wells's) piano with four lines written in pencil", Tormé recalled. "They started, 'Chestnuts roasting..., Jack Frost nipping..., Yuletide carols..., Folks dressed up like Eskimos.' Bob didn't think he was writing a song lyric. He said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Forty minutes later that song was written. I wrote all the music and some of the lyrics."
The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song in June 1946. At Cole's behest – and over the objections of his label, Capitol Records – a second recording was made in August utilizing a small string section. This version became a massive hit on both the pop and R&B charts. Cole again recorded the song in 1953, using the same arrangement with a full orchestra arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, and once more in 1961, in a stereophonic version with another full orchestra arranged and conducted by Ralph Carmichael. Cole's 1961 version is generally regarded as definitive, and in 2004 was the most-loved seasonal song with women aged 30–49, while the original 1946 recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974.

Third recording: Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, August 24, 1953. It was the song's first magnetic tape recording. Label credit: The King Cole Trio with String Choir (Nat King Cole, vocals; Buddy Cole, pianist; John Collins, guitarist; Charlie Harris, bassist; Lee Young, drummer; Ann Stockton, harp; Charlie Grean, Pete Rugolo and Nelson Riddle, orchestral arrangement; Nelson Riddle, orchestra conductor). Master #11726, take 11. Issued November 1953 as the "new" Capitol 90036(78rpm) / F90036(45rpm) (Capitol first issued 90036 in 1950 with the second recording). Correct label credit issued on October 18, 1954 as Capitol 2955(78rpm) / F2955(45rpm). Label credit: Nat "King" Cole with Orchestra Conducted by Nelson Riddle. This recording is available on the Cole compilation CD Cole, Christmas, & Kids, as well as on the various-artists CDs Ultimate Christmas and Casey Kasem Presents All Time Christmas Favorites. It was also included, along with both 1946 recordings, on the Mosaic Records box set The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Nat King Cole Trio.
Fourth recording: Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York City, March 30, 1961. This rendition, the first recorded in stereo, is widely played on radio stations during the Christmas season, and has become the most popular/familiar version of this song. Label credit: Nat King Cole (Nat King Cole, vocals; Hank Jones, pianist; John Collins, guitarist; Charlie Harris, bassist; Lee Young, drummer; Charlie Grean, Pete Rugolo and Ralph Carmichael, orchestral arrangement; Ralph Carmichael, orchestra conductor). The instrumental arrangement is nearly identical to the 1953 version, but Cole's vocals are deeper-sounding and more focused. Originally done for The Nat King Cole Story (a 1961 LP devoted to stereo re-recordings of Cole's earlier hits), this recording was later included in a reissue of Cole's 1960 holiday album The Magic of Christmas replacing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". Retitled The Christmas Song, the album was issued in 1963 as Capitol W-1967(mono) / SW-1967(stereo) and today is available both on compact disc and streaming on iTunes. This recording of "The Christmas Song" is also available on numerous compilation albums. Some are Capitol pop standards Christmas compilations while others are broader-based. For example, it is available on WCBS-FM's Ultimate Christmas Album Volume 3. An alternate take of the 1961 recording, featuring a different vocal and missing the solo piano on the instrumental bridge, appears on the Deluxe Edition of the 2014 compilation The Extraordinary Nat King Cole.
There were several covers of Nat Cole's original record in the 1940s. The first of these was said to be by Dick Haymes on the Decca label, but his was released first – not recorded first. The first cover of "The Christmas Song" was performed by pop tenor and bandleader Eddy Howard on Majestic. Howard was a big Cole fan, and also covered Nat's versions of "I Want to Thank Your Folks" and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons", among others.
"The Christmas Song" has been covered by numerous artists from a wide variety of genres. In December 1946, Bing Crosby performed it on a recorded radio broadcast with an introduction including Skitch Henderson on piano. Crosby with the Ken Darby Singers and the John Scott Trotter Orchestra also performed it on March 19, 1947 which went on to be released as a single later that same year. In 1953, Perry Como performed the song for both the Christmas Joy single and his album Around the Christmas Tree.
In 2000, Christina Aguilera recorded a version and included it on her album, My Kind of Christmas (2000). The song found critical and commercial success and peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart; the second highest position for the song in the chart after the original. In 2003 for his EP Let It Snow, Michael Bublé recorded a cover of the song. It charted at number 6 on the BillboardAdult Contemporary chart. In 2018, Lauren Daigle's cover of the song reached number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Christian Songs chart.
The song has also been covered by Ariana Grande,Camila Cabello,The Carpenters,Celine Dion,Ella Fitzgerald,Elizabeth Gillies,Frank Sinatra,The Jackson 5,John Legend,JoJo,Justin Bieber,Kenny Burrell,Luther Vandross,Mary J. Blige,Ne-Yo,NSYNC,Pentatonix,Peter Hollens,Shawn Mendes, and Toni Braxton among others.
Mel Tormé recordings
Mel Tormé himself made several recordings of the song, including versions released in 1955 (on his live Coral Records album At the Crescendo), 1961 (on his Verve Records album My Kind of Music), 1970 (on a Columbia Records promo single), 1990 (in a medley with "Autumn Leaves", on his live Concord Records album Mel Tormé Live at the Fujitsu–Concord Festival 1990), and 1992 (on his Telarc Records album Christmas Songs).
The 1970 Columbia version of the song adds an opening verse, written in 1963 while Tormé was working as musical arranger for The Judy Garland Show. He first performed and introduced the opening verse while duetting with Garland on the song for the show's Christmas Special, which aired on December 22, 1963:
All through the year we waited
Waited through spring and fall
To hear silver bells ringing, see wintertime bringing
The happiest season of all
Additionally, Tormé's recordings typically include a coda adapted from "Here We Come A-wassailing":
Love and joy come to you
And to you your Christmas too
And God bless you and send you a happy New Year
And God send you a happy New Year

Best Nat King Cole Songs: 20 Unforgettable Tracks
Born on March 17, 1919, Nat King Cole was one of the world’s greatest solo vocalists and a pioneer for racial equality (in the 50s he became the first African-American artist to host a TV series). From “Unforgettable” to “L-O-V-E” and “The Christmas Song,” he left behind a slew of timeless classics. To mark his centenary, we celebrate 20 of the best Nat King Cole songs.

Best Nat King Cole Songs: 20 Unforgettable Tracks
Straighten Up And Fly Right (1943)
“Straighten Up And Fly Right” was written by Nat King Cole and lyricist-publisher-promoter Irving Mills, and was part of the soundtrack of the 1943 comedy movie Here Comes Elmer. Cole, born Nathaniel Adams Cole in Alabama, on March 17, 1919, grew up in Chicago, the son of a Baptist minister. “Straighten Up And Fly Right” was based on a folk tale Cole’s father, Edward, would sometimes tell at sermons. This wartime version showcases some of Cole’s brilliant early work with his jazz trio (with guitarist Oscar Moore and Wesley Prince on bass). The song was a No.1 hit and has remained popular. Jeff Goldblum included a version on his 2018 debut album, The Capitol Studios Sessions.
(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 (1946)
“Route 66,” composed by Julie London’s husband Bobby Troup about a journey from Chicago to Los Angeles, is one of the iconic American road songs. Also one of the best Nat King Cole songs, this hit version from 1946 shows off Cole’s prodigious skills as a pianist. Cole, who was influenced by jazz maestro Earl Hines, was a fluent pianist who could swing with the best. When Ray Charles announced Cole’s induction into the R&B Hall Of Fame in 2000, he said, “I used to sleep Nat Cole, drink Nat Cole, eat Nat Cole. I mean his voice and his piano was so much in harmony together. That is what I wanted to do… sound like Nat Cole… and get hired.”
The Christmas Song (1946)
In 1946, Cole became the first recording artist to sing the classic festive lyrics about “chestnuts roasting on an open fire and Jack Frost nipping at your nose,” in what many regard as the definitive version of “The Christmas Song.” The song was co-written by famous crooner Mel Tormé and Bob Wells on a scorching summer’s day. Tormé’s youngest son, James – a jazz singer – said his father and Wells took it first to a publishing house who rejected the song. “They then drove over to Nat King Cole, who was exploding in popularity at the time,” said Tormé, Jr. “They played it and he asked them to play it again. ‘Stop everything, that’s my song,’ he said.”
Cole’s hit version isn’t just one of the best Nat King Cole Songs, it’s part of modern Christmas itself.
Nature Boy (1947)
It is said that the nomadic Brooklyn-born writer eden ahbez handed Cole’s manager the lyrics and music to “Nature Boy” backstage at a concert. Cole loved the song and cut a version on 22 August 1947. It shot to No.1 on the charts and stayed there for eight weeks. “Nature Boy” was a tricky song to tackle and Cole showed all his technical ability by delivering a commanding version in his silky, baritone voice. The orchestra was conducted by Frank De Vol, who was the in-house arranger for Capitol Records, and his use of strings and flute bring out the poignant lyrics, including the memorable lines “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn/Is just to love and be loved in return.”
Mona Lisa (1950)
“Mona Lisa” is one of the great love songs of the 20th Century, which more than earns it a place among the best Nat King Cole songs. It was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the movie Captain Carey, USA, and won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Surprisingly, though, “Mona Lisa” was originally released as the B-side to “The Greatest Inventor of Them All” and only took off when radio DJs began playing it instead of the main side. The arrangement for Cole’s version is by the great Nelson Riddle, with music by Les Baxter and his orchestra.
The title refers, of course, to the celebrated Leonardo Da Vinci painting. George Benson, who has praised the “suaveness” Cole brought to the song, was just eight when he won a singing contest which had a prize of being able to record his own song. He recorded a version of “Mona Lisa” under the moniker Little Georgie Benson. “That song had such an influence on me,” he said.
“Pretend” was originally released as a shellac 78rpm single by Capitol. Cole’s version of the 30s ballad was cut with Stan Kenton’s jazz orchestra and included (uncredited) some excellent musicians, including Shelly Manne on drums. Cole’s late daughter, the Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole, recorded her own version on her 1991 album, Unforgettable… With Love, which reworked some of her father’s best-known songs.
Too Young (1951)
“Too Young,” which had lyrics by the novelist Sylvia Dee (she also wrote the words to “Bring Me Sunshine”) sold a million copies and was No.1 for five weeks, prompting Billboard to call it the top song of 1951. Cole described “Too Young” as perhaps his favorite of all the songs he recorded.
Cole’s 1952 album Unforgettable opens with its superb title track, which was composed by Irving Gordon – who wrote “Me, Myself And I” for Billie Holiday – and stands as a career-defining performance among the best Nat King Cole songs. His smooth, nuanced delivery is pitch-perfect and enhanced by subtle accompaniment from an orchestra arranged by Nelson Riddle.
Walkin’ My Baby Back Home (1952)
“I try to give people what they like,” said Cole, who, at his peak, was selling seven million records a year. In 1952, Capitol Records issued a series of his songs on a 10” LP called 8 Top Pops, including “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home.” The lyrics for the song were by the accomplished songwriter Roy Turk, whose many hits include Elvis Presley’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”
Almost Like Being In Love (1955)
Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote “Almost Like Being In Love” for the 40s musical Brigadoon. Cole loved the tune and recorded several versions, including a sparkling two-minute take for his 1955 album Nat King Cole Sings For Two In Love. Cole’s version has featured in several movies and was the closing song in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day. As Cole said: “Most songs have the same story – about love – and you’re either winning or losing.”
When I Fall In Love (1956)
Cole took “When I Fall In Love,” a song written by Victor Young and Edward Heyman that was a hit for Doris Day in 1952, and made it his own with a stunning version. Cole’s brother Freddie said that one memorable feature of Nat’s singing was how well he enunciated words in songs. His stirring delivery left an indelible impression on listeners. Singer Suzi Quatro said hearing it was one of the defining moments of her childhood. “The first time I heard this, I was very impressionable,” said the singer. “I was about ten and that was the first proper love song I heard. I used to sit in my sister’s room and listen to it and cry.”
Hoagy Carmichael’s magnificent love song “Stardust” was 30 years old when Cole gave it a fresh delivery for his 1957 album Love Is The Thing. Steve Hoffman, who worked on the mastering of the album, said Cole simply had a voice that “demanded the spotlight”, no matter how good the supporting cast of musicians. “I started out to become a jazz pianist, but when I started singing, I sang the way I felt and that’s just the way it came out,” Cole said modestly.
Cole recorded “Ballerina” (sometimes listed as “Dance, Ballerina, Dance”) ten years after it was written by Carl Sigman. The song was also hugely important to Gregory Porter, who cut a version on his 2017 tribute album, Nat King Cole & Me. Calling it “an influential song”, Porter noted, “It’s a story of love and how it doesn’t come to fruition based on this dancer having a career and life of her own. Cole was one of a kind. He left such great music that you can’t help but be influenced by that extraordinary timbre, style, and ultimate cool.”
The Very Thought Of You (1958)
Ray Noble’s beautiful love ballad “The Very Thought Of You” was first cut by Al Bowlly in 1934 and has since been tackled by many of the world’s greatest singers, including Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday. One of the most memorable versions is Cole’s silky one from 1958, which was produced by Lee Gillette and features the sweeping string arrangements of the composer Gordon Jenkins. “I’m an interpreter of stories,” said Cole. “When I perform it’s like sitting down at my piano and telling fairy stories.”
Quizás, Quizás, Quizás (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps) (1962)
In one of his albums of Latin music, Nat King Cole tackled “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” (“Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps”) by Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farres. The heavily orchestrated dance track featured Armando De Sequeira Romeu, a drummer from The Havana Symphony Orchestra. Cole sang in Spanish, learning the lyrics phonetically.
(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons (1961)
Deek Watson, founding member of the vocal group The Ink Spots, co-wrote the timeless classic “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons” in 1945. Sixteen years later, Cole put his own stamp on the song with a version for his album The Nat King Cole Story, which was nominated for the Grammy award for Album Of The Year. His sweet delivery influenced a generation of singers. “He just hypnotized me. Nat King Cole’s singing was like medicine to me,” said Aaron Neville. “Nat was everybody’s favorite singer – from Ray Charles to Sam Cooke to Marvin Gaye – all of them loved him. Everybody wanted to do some Nat King Cole.”
Send For Me (1961)
From his days playing uncredited on a Lester Young record, Nat King Cole liked to bring in top-notch jazz musicians for his tracks. On “Send For Me” he hired drummer Lee Young (who had also played with Lester) and guitarist Kenny Burrell. The song was written by Ollie Jones, and Cole delivers the lyrics with his usual impeccable pitch, sounding so relaxed as a performer.
Oh Mary, Don’t You Weep (1961)
Cole grew up surrounded by gospel music and recorded a whole album of spirituals for Capitol called Every Time I Feel The Spirit. The version of “Oh Mary, Don’t You Weep” was adapted by Cole, who brought in the choir of the First Church Of Deliverance church in Chicago to sing backing vocals. Cole was a groundbreaking figure in American popular music. At the height of his popularity, he became the first African-American to host his own television show, but he never forgot his roots. He put his success down to “hard work, integrity, and luck” and overcame appalling racism.
Ramblin’ Rose (1962)
Cole’s version of a popular song written by brothers Noel and Joe Sherman reached No.2 on both the Billboard charts and sold over a million copies. “Ramblin’ Rose” was the title track for his 1962 album of the same name, which was arranged and conducted by Belford Hendrick, a man who had worked with Count Basie and Dinah Washington. The song featured a vocal backing chorus and some fine electric guitar from Rene Hall, who played regularly with soul greats Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye.
This modern love classic was written by Milt Gabler, uncle of the comedian Billy Crystal. As well as a gorgeous take in English, the singer cut Japanese, Spanish, and French versions, cementing it as one of the best Nat King Cole songs of all time. Cole placed great store in precision in music and his singing is as exact as an atomic clock. The trumpet on the song is courtesy of Bobby Bryant, a jazz maestro who recorded with Oliver Nelson, Lalo Schifrin, and Horace Silver. Nat King Cole recorded the song in 1964, at a time when he had been diagnosed with lung cancer – a disease from which he died a year later, aged just 45.

Ralph Carmichael, Composer for The Blob, Dead at 94
Ralph Carmichael, the arranger and composer behind Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song,” the title song to 1958’s The Blob, and the “Father of Contemporary Christian Music,” has died. Deadlinereports that Carmichael died in Camarillo, California, at the age of 94. Carmichael got his start in music heading the music department at Southern California Bible College. Around the same time, he began writing incidental music charts for I Love Lucy. Carmichael would go on to score and arrange the horror film The Blob and the high-concept sitcom My Mother the Car. The theme to The Blob, byBurt Bacharach and Mack David, has become a Halloween staple.
Not content to grace just one major holiday, Carmichael also arranged Nat King Cole’s definitive version of “The Christmas Song.” Carmichael worked on nine full-length albums with Cole, including L-O-V-E right before the singer’s death.
Carmichael founded his own record and publishing companies that released Christian music, which gave him the unofficial title of “Father of Contemporary Christian Music.” He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1985.
The set was recorded in Seattle in 1965
After nearly six decades, a private recording of a rare, nightclub performance by John Coltrane of his magnum opus, A Love Supreme, is now available via Impulse! Records/UMe. Recorded in late 1965 on the culminating evening of a historic week-long run at The Penthouse in Seattle, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is a musical revelation of historic importance, capturing Coltrane as he began to expand his classic quartet — adding Pharoah Sanders on second saxophone and Donald Garrett on second bass—and catapulting him into the intense, spiritually focused final phase of his career. The album is available now to stream, download and for purchase on CD and 2 LP vinyl.
A visualizer for the transfixing opening composition, “A Love Supreme, Pt. 1 – Acknowledgement,” which sees the septet stretch out for nearly three times the length of the album version, is available to enjoy today along with the visualizer for the album closer, “A Love Supreme, Part IV – Psalm,” released last month.
This week, NPR Music brought together WBGO’s Nate Chinen, renowned musicians, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and harpist Brandee Younger, along with fans around the world, to discuss the album in an engrossing live conversation as part of their Listening Party series.
The significance of A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is heightened by the fact that Coltrane seldom performed his four-part suite after originally recording it in the studio in 1964. Composed and created as a public declaration of his personal spiritual beliefs and universalist sentiment, it became a best-seller and received a GRAMMY nod the next year. For more than six decades, it seemed the only recorded public performance of A Love Supreme took place at a French festival at Juan-Les-Pains in July 1965 and was released almost twenty years ago. The tape reels containing this performance from October 1965 sat in the private collection of Seattle saxophonist and educator Joe Brazil, heard by a few fortunate musicians and friends—and largely unknown until now.
A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is a fascinating and rare performance of the full suite, marked by a looser and more improvisational approach, and a overriding sense of communal participation — much like a Sunday church service; the lineup featured John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders on saxophones, McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Jimmy Garrison and Donald (Rafael) Garrett on basses. Carlos Ward, then a young saxophonist just getting started on the scene, sat in as well.
As music historian Ashley Kahn puts it in the liner notes, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle “offers the first evidence of the master of spiritual expression performing his signature work in the close confines of a jazz club…on October 2, 1965, a Saturday, in Seattle, the necessary elements were in alignment: music, players, venue, a spirit of connection, a certain political charge. Coltrane chose to perform it, and significantly, the moment was recorded.”
Kahn’s extensive liner notes tell the story of A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle not only through the words of the musicians themselves, but also through a number of witnesses whose lives were changed by Coltrane’s visit to Seattle in 1965 (his sole visit to the city as a leader), including Brazil, Ward, and bassist David Friesen, who states: “I’ve always pursued the spiritual aspect of the music and I still do. I remember sitting with Coltrane during one break that week and…what touched me was the way he treated other people. He showed mercy and kindness to people from what I could see around me for the week that I was there.”
The music on A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle was recorded with a two-microphone set-up onstage, connected to an Ampex reel-to-reel machine, and the only copies of the tapes were well cared for, yielding a remarkably clear and distortion-free recording. “What’s remarkable is that tapes from this era often suffer over the years from heat or moisture damage, or simply being stacked horizontally,” writes engineer Kevin Reeves who restored and mastered this release. “However, these tapes are in excellent condition… and the results are among the best amateur recordings of John Coltrane we’ve had the pleasure to work on.”
The story of the A Love Supreme suite is the story of John Coltrane — his musical journey, and his spiritual path. It has become one of the most celebrated and influential recordings to come out of the jazz canon, revered and studied by musicians far beyond the jazz realm. Rolling Stone magazine consistently lists it among the top albums of all time. “Of his many musical creations, Coltrane looked upon A Love Supreme in a very special light,” Kahn notes in the liner notes to A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle. “He called A Love Supreme a ‘humble offering to the Divine; no other composition or recording was similarly offered nor did he append his signature to any other work. A Love Supreme was as much an individual testament as it was a public statement — a sermon of universalist belief.” A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle now expands the story of both a great musician and a timeless piece of music.

If there is one thing that is constant in this world, it is that the day after Halloween marks a multi-month-long non-negotiable stream of holiday music in just about every public place that has speakers. From coffee shops to convenience stores, your car radio to your dentist’s waiting room, there’s no escaping the unsolicited visions of silver bells ringing and sugar plums dancing in your ear drums. We're just days away, folks.
But not all holiday music is bad. Actually, some of the new albums are actually, well, good. But if you're not looking for entire collections, but rather a smattering of songs to throw on a playlist—songs just with a bit more refined taste—we’ve got you covered. Go mull some wine, start up the fire, and crank your home speakers high enough to drown out your neighborhood carolers’ off-key rendition of “Christmas Shoes.” These are the best Christmas songs of all time.

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Hozier
All there is to say about this is that it's Hozier. If the man read me my credit card bill every month, I'd pay it with chill vibes and good spirits.

"Christmas Don't Be Late" by Norah Jones
Norah Jones and The Chipmunks feels like an uncomfortable pairing, but Jones's jazzy, slowed down take on the (whiney) classic is refreshingly nostalgic and modern at the same time.

"If We Make It Through December" by Pistol Annies
No one is ever going to match the brilliance of the original, but the Pistol Annie's do a stripped back version of the track that's breathtaking in its own way.
"Christmas Isn't Canceled (Just You)" by Kelly Clarkson
That title may make your eye twitch a bit (I think we're all done with the word), but the cut from Clarkson's new holiday album is a brilliantly upbeat take on the holiday break up song. Once you've had enough listens to Dolly's "Hard Candy Christmas," pivot to this bad boy.
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Manchester Orchestra
Lean into the sad boy vibes this holiday season with a toned down version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Manchester Orchestra. The track dials back the nostalgia and focuses solely on the wistful emotions behind the lyrics to the point that it nearly becomes a melancholic lullaby.
"The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole
Is it bold for a track title to self-proclaim as the Christmas song? Yes. Is roasting chestnuts a fairly outdated tradition that doesn’t actually taste very good in practice? Also yes. But, this iconic tune deserves all of the liberties it takes and more. Nat King Cole’s warm vocals paired with the romantic string accompaniment make for as sweet a combo as Santa’s cookies and milk.
“Feliz Navidad” by José Feliciano
A great unifier not only for its bilingual lyrics but also for its universal charm, José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” has become a staple in the library of holiday pop songs that don’t suck.
“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” by Frank Sinatra
Originally written for soldiers overseas during World War II, this classic croon has become an anthem for all the lonely hearts who can’t be home for the holidays.
“River” by Joni Mitchell
While it’s more of a breakup ballad than it is a Christmas song, anyone who has to endure the acute ache of going through a split during the holiday season deserves a song of their own.
“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Thurl Ravenscroft
This is the original (and perhaps the only) holiday diss track. Essentially one long series of back-handed compliments sung in a hilarious baritone, this song is sure to make even Mr. Grinch himself crack a smile.
David Bowie and Bing Crosby — “Little Drummer Boy/“Peace on Earth)”
In 1977, the modern art-rock star and the old-school silky-voiced crooner joined forces in one of the most unexpectedly successful duets of all time. This famed medley of "Little Drummer Boy" and "Peace on Earth" is not only one of Bowie's most commercially successful songs in his storied career, but it marked one of the last vocal recordings Crosby ever made—having been recorded a month before his death.
Lizzo — “Never Felt Like Christmas”
When the old Christmas love songs won’t cut it, there’s always this one from Lizzo. And in true Lizzo form, she doesn’t mince words when it comes to capturing those who feel bitter about Christmas feels.
The Carpenters — “Sleigh Ride”
Ah yes, classic cheesy Christmas schmaltz from The Carpenters. It must be December.
Fitz & the Tantrums — “Santa Stole My Lady”
Christmas sucks for the brokenhearted. We've all been there. Might as well make the best of it with this Fitz & the Tantrums soul ballad.
The Killers — “Don’t Shoot Me, Santa"
This Killers song is for the true lovers of alternative Christmas tracks. Also, the thought Santa as a low-key criminal is pretty funny (and the plot of Bad Santa).
Ariana Grande — “Wit It This Christmas”
This 2015 song features the lyrics “Are you down for some of these milk and cookies?,” which is really the only way anyone should ever address Santa Claus.
Julie Andrews — “My Favorite Things”
Though it wasn't specifically intended to be one, "My Favorite Things," has become a Christmas song. Yes, over the years there have been many covers—like one from Kelly Clarkson—but Julie Andrews will always be the OG.
Barbra Streisand — "Jingle Bells?"
In 1967, Barbra Streisand recorded “A Christmas Album,” which included “Jingle Bells?,” sung at such a fast pace it’ll get your heart rate going as effectively as a quick jaunt around the block.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono — “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
This is about as political as a Christmas song gets. This 1971 song was inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s protest against America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
Celine Dion — “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
And if you want an updated—though pointedly less political version—there's Celine Dion's cover. What it lacks in politics it makes up with 100 percent more Celine.
Dolly Parton – "Hard Candy Christmas"
Dolly’s entry into the great holiday songbook wasn’t even initially intended for Christmas. As a bit of a showender for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the soundtrack version is a solo performance from Parton. Her version was co-opted into the melancholy Christmas single-anthem that is pro-getting drunk on apple wine.
Judy Garland – "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
If this isn’t on your Christmas playlist, it’s a tragedy. While “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” has been recorded more times than probably any of us can count, it’s the emotional Judy Garland version from Meet Me in St. Louis that stands above the rest.
Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan – "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings"
Fun fact: Barenaked Ladies came out with a Christmas album. More fun fact: the best song on it is the irresistible harmony between the band and McLachlan, whose angelic voice lends itself perfectly to anything to do with Christmas.
Kelly Clarkson – "Underneath the Tree"
Kelly loves a bop, and “Underneath the Tree” is just happy, Christmas noise. While her album Wrapped in Red is a testament that Clarkson should throw her hat in the ring for all Christmas music, this one is just especially fun.
Sia – "Puppies Are Forever"
Sia’s foray into the holiday album space is as off the wall as you might imagine it might be, but at the top of that heap of silly is “Puppies Are Forever.” Outside of being saccharine to the point of giving you a cavity, it’s an earworm that you’ll undoubtedly be humming an hour after listening.
Sufjan Stevens – "Auld Lang Syne"
Sufjan Stevens’s take on what most people know as the song that plays at New Years is a folksy banjo-laden track that feels simplified and stripped down in the same way you’d imagine a big group of friends would perform it at their own New Years party.
The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl – "Fairytale of New York"
If you could imagine a British Celtic punk band coming out with a Christmas song, it’s probably going to be “Fairytale of New York.” What starts out as a slow jam moves into full Irish vibes about a minute in. With the exception of one ~problematic~ line, “Fairytale of New York” is a drunken beautiful mess of an ode to Christmas.
Kacey Musgraves – "Christmas Makes Me Cry"
Musgraves’s 2016 holiday album, A Very Kacey Christmas, is a late entry into the canon, but it’s entirely deserving. Especially this cut, which hones in on the nuanced pain that the annual event can cause.
The Crystals – "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"
Off the best Christmas album of all time, A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector, the New York girl group logs this ebullient holiday party jam that will get even Grinch to twist it out on the dance floor.
Elvis Presley – "Blue Christmas"
Elvis’ Christmas Album is, arguably, the best testament to the King’s artistic interests of all his albums as it masterfully tackles rockabilly, gospel, country, pop, and gospel across its 12 tracks. The most enduring cut, though, is the equal parts woeful and hopeful “Blue Christmas.” Give it a listen and you’ll see why.
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles – "Jingle Bells"
“Jingle Bells” is hardly the grooviest of all holiday songs, but the soul legend’s trusty backing outfit revamped the familiar tune in new, delicate, Motown-inspired ways.
The Beach Boys – "Santa's Beard"
One of six original cuts on the group’s 1964 holiday LP—the aptly-titled Beach Boys’ Christmas Album—”Santa’s Beard” is the darkly funny tale of Mike Love taking his younger brother to the mall to meet Santa. When the kid tugs that fake facial hair right off, his life is changed forever.
Bing Crosby – "White Christmas"
The ultimate Christmas song and a masterclass in stately, elegant singing. They don’t make them like this anymore—Crosby released the dreamy ballad in 1941—which makes enjoying this each year even more necessary.
Ella Fitzgerald – "Winter Wonderland"
Few do it as well as the First Lady of Jazz. Case in point: Her delightful, swinging take on the holiday classic “Winter Wonderland.” A necessary addition for every holiday dinner’s playlist.
Willie Nelson – "Pretty Paper"
Penned by Nelson but originally released by Roy Orbison in 1963, “Pretty Paper” is one of the finest songs ever crafted. (Nelson recorded his own version for his 1979 holiday LP.) A spacious ballad, it tells the story of a street vendor hustling to sell pencils and, yes, pretty paper during the holiday season. It’ll warm your heart and bring a tear to your eye, all at once.
Louis Armstrong – "Cool Yule"
This Steve Allen-penned Christmas track has gotten a lot of play over the years, bur Satchmo's inaugural version still stands above the rest.
Donny Hathaway – "This Christmas"
The R&B legend's 1970 Yuletide tune is a lightly funky bounce that revels in the holiday season's possibility.
The Kinks – "Father Christmas"
The cheeky Britpoppers' class-conscious Christmas rave-up cloaks its serious message about the haves and the have-nots in a letter to Santa. .
Slade – "Merry Christmas Everybody"
Billy Squier – "Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You"
The arena rocker's sweet ode to the Yuletide spirit imprinted itself on a generation when it doubled as the de facto Christmas card from the then-fledgeling MTV to its viewers.
Wham! – "Last Christmas"
The greatest pop singer of the '80s turns his holiday heartache into snowy synthpop.
Darlene Love – "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"
Yuletide longing spins into pop gold for a 1960s pop doyenne.
Mariah Carey – "All I Want for Christmas Is You"
Mimi's entry into the Christmas canon is filled with flirtatious coos, beltable verses, and girl-group harmonies.
The Ronettes – "Frosty the Snowman"
Pop's preeminent bad girl Ronnie Spector shows off her winter-wonderland spirit.
Bruce Springsteen – "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town"
One of the most buoyant takes on this ode to Father Christmas features Bruce Springsteen playfully needling his bandmates about their behavior over the past year and a joyous sax solo by Clarence Clemons.
Ramones – "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)"
Queens' punk-rock royalty offers up a speedy plea for Christmas peace on the domestic front.
Alvin & The Chipmunks – "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)"
A divisive track, to be sure, but you're probably bluffing if you don't crack a smile when singing along with Alvin's wishes for a "hooooo-laaaaa-hoooooop."
Daryl Hall & John Oates – "Jingle Bell Rock"
Bobby Helms's 1957 celebration of Christmas rock is well-trod territory, but Hall & Oates' blue-eyed soul version is a cut above its peers.
Madonna – "Santa Baby"
Madonna was in full-on ˆ mode for this cover of Eartha Kitt's fireside seduction, all hiccuping flirtation and winking vamps.
The Darkness – "Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)"
British glam bands from Wizzard to Slade have caught the Christmas spirit, but the outré absurdity of this retro-minded outfit provides a particularly sweet Yuletide thrill.
Run-DMC – "Christmas in Hollis"
Flipping "Jingle Bells" into a story of the holiday season in Queens, this track isn't just one of the greatest Christmas raps—it's one of the best 20th-century holiday songs.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – "Please Come Home for Christmas"
A fiery take on Charles Brown's brokenhearted love song from the much-missed soul revivalist.
The Jackson 5 – "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"
Young Michael Jackson turns in one of his most joyous early performances, which is saying a lot given the ebullience quotient of his other Jackson 5 offerings.
The Temptations – "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"
Picking one track off these soul titans' 1970 Christmas album is harder than choosing between rum and bourbon for your eggnog, so let's just go with its opener.
John Denver & The Muppets – "Christmas Is Coming"
The delightful collaboration between the "Rocky Mountain High" singer and Jim Henson's band of misfit puppets is full of highlights, but the album's calypso-flavored version of this Yuletide nursery rhyme features a particularly giggle-worthy star turn from Miss Piggy.
Paul McCartney – "Wonderful Christmastime"
An upbeat trifle about having fun around the holidays that showcases the former Beatle's silly side.
Al Green and Annie Lennox – "Put a Little Love in Your Heart"
The grain of the Reverend Al's voice and the slickness of the Eurythmics singer's belt on this Jackie DeShannon cover make for a glorious combination.
The Waitresses – "Christmas Wrapping"
Chance meetings with cute guys in the supermarket are the stuff Yuletide fairytales are made of—especially when they're set to bubbly, sax-powered New Wave.
Sesame Street Cast – "Keep Christmas With You All Through the Year"
The 1978 special Christmas Eve on Sesame Street represents the educational show at its finest, and this original track about holding on to the Christmas spirit year-round still tugs at the heartstrings.
Otis Redding – "Merry Christmas Baby"
Otis's blazing version of this R&B Yuletide classic is spine-tingling nearly 50 years after its recording.
Elton John – "Step Into Christmas"
Elton's outsized personality and his signature holiday track's rollicking feel make for a joyous occasion.
Stevie Wonder – "Someday at Christmas"
Stevie Wonder's plea for Yuletide peace (which he recently covered with Andra Day) has extra relevance in troubled times.
Lloyd – "She's All I Want for Christmas"
A new entry in the Christmas canon, this R&B rave-up showcases a Michael Jackson-channeling performance from one of Atlanta's best new soul singers.
Bob Rivers – "The Twelve Pains of Christmas"
Goofy Christmas tracks are in no short supply, but this perky rundown of the holiday's more hellish aspects has a relatable moment for everyone, from crying kids to hangover shakes.
Vince Guaraldi Trio – "Christmas Time Is Here"
Seasonally appropriate melancholia from A Charlie Brown Christmas, which is still the greatest animated salute to the spirit of the season.
