Louisville store a way station for repairing old train sets

Four-year-old Owen Howard and his brother Noah, 2½, stood in identical orange T-shirts, staring with rapt attention as a model train puffed, chugged and tooted its way around an oval track at Roundhouse Electric Trains off Brownsboro Road.

"We are regulars," said the boys' grandfather, Bob Bennett. Bennett started coming to Roundhouse when he decided to fix up an old train set that he had as a kid for his grandsons, who had recently taken an interest in trains. He recalled his own fascination as a child with the toy.

"It became like it was a real train, and I was an engineer," Bennett said. "I'd sit and play with the thing for hours."

Owen and Noah have a Polar Express model train, but there's a surprise in store for them on Christmas — their own Blue Comet, a sought-after Lionel set.

"When the grandkids smile, we do too," Bennett said.

The Bennetts travel more than 30 minutes from their home in Salem, Ind., to reach Roundhouse, 4870 Brownsboro Center, near the Watterson Expressway. Following the closing of L&N Trains and Things in September, Roundhouse is one of the last stores devoted to sales and service of model trains in Kentucky.

Roundhouse sells and repairs all major brands and scales of model trains. Entire walls are filled with displays of antique models with names like Pennsylvania Flyer, Rio Grande and Santa Fe. The store rambles through eight rooms — a seemingly endless wonderland for model train enthusiasts. A revolving cast of repair specialists, mostly older guys, drops in to work on trains and banter with each other and customers.

Tom Budniak opened Roundhouse in 1983. He got his first train for Christmas in 1946 — he still has it — but he only began collecting model trains seriously in the 1970s. "I was at a yard sale, and I saw some trains that looked like mine, which I hadn't seen since 1958. That's what rekindled it," Budniak said. "I bought those at the yard sale, and I've been buying them ever since."

Soon Budniak learned how to fix the trains himself, and he started doing repair work for other hobbyists in his spare time. He opened Roundhouse while still holding down a day job. "My wife ran the store during the day, and I'd hustle over here after work," he said.

Three years ago, Budniak sold the business to Kevin Cook, 59, who has had a lifelong passion for railroads, full-scale and miniature. Cook has trains in his blood, having grown up around railroad employees.

"My dad, two uncles, great-uncles and grandfathers on both sides were all railroaders," Cook said. "I grew up with railroad talk in the family. They were brakemen, they were switchmen, they were conductors."

Cook remembers touring the Broadway Limited, the pride of the Pennsylvania Railroad, with his grandfather on the way to Pittsburgh Station for his grandfather's retirement party. "I was put on locomotive engines from the time I can remember," he said.

But his family didn't have a lot of money for model trains. "I grew up very poor," he said. "I lusted for trains. I never could get enough. Now I own a whole store, and I still can't get enough."

According to Cook, the clientele at Roundhouse is split between grandparents like the Bennetts, returning with their old sets to give to their grandchildren, and retirees rediscovering the hobby.

"God made some men younger and some men older, but when they come in here, they're all 12 years old," Cook said.

For kids, model trains offer a kind of hands-on learning that Cook fears will be lost to the current generation, reared on video games. "I like to see how things work. I like to see how things go together. You learn in miniature how everything goes together," he said.

Denny Hager, 66, from Shelbyville, had come to Roundhouse to see about repairing his old train set. He received it as a gift when he was 9, and his father and uncle built a table for it. He remembers playing with it for years.

Hager found a new home for the old table in his basement, but he wants to get the train running again for his grandchildren. "It probably hasn't been run since 1960," he said. Roundhouse was the only place in the area where he could get the old set fixed, and he found the experts there helpful — although the set won't be ready for Christmas.

Old model trains like Hager's demonstrate the surprising endurance of the machines. "Nobody expected them to last like this," Budniak said. "Engines from the '40s and '50s — they still run like sewing machines, and they're easy to work on."

We have signed a lease on a new Clubhouse in Louisville.  We are currently working on setting up our permanent layout.  Our members are working to get our new home ready so the public can once again visit us and enjoy the Model Railroading Hobby.  We will be open soon !

So follow our progress here on our website and on Facebook and Instagram.

Due to the Coronavirus, we are closed to visitors until further notice.  This for the protection of our members, many of whom are older adults, and to you the interested public.   In the future our Club will be open on a regular schedule.  We hope you will stop back here to our website to see our progress on building our new layout AND to see when we will reopen to the public.

While we were homeless, we reorganized our Club as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS.

Our Traveling Layout is still ready to display.  The Layout features 3 main tacks with a 10 x 28′ footprint in HO Scale.  We display the Layout at venues around the Louisville Metro Area throughout the year.  For more details about this and our other events, from our Home page, click “Club” then “Schedule of Events”.

Model Train Collector's One Track Mind

Although I am not a fisherman, I knew With a wonderful adventure I marked the coming of Indian Summer, which this year was truly magnificent. The working day ended, and I went out into the street, as usual, heading to the bus stop, but the evening was so beautiful. That, despite my tiredness, I decided to walk on foot to enjoy the gentle warmth of an autumn evening. Are there many such evenings left this year.
