HIGHS
Classic SUV look and proportions, real off-road capability, one for every budget.
A lot of those budgets are high, aging mechanical platform.
VERDICT
A broadly appealing SUV that can almost certainly be specified exactly to your tastes.
Overview
Even in a world where SUVs hadn't overrun the Earth, there would still be the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was one of the first SUVs that didn't punish its passengers, that was as at home bumping gently against a parking log as bouncing off a boulder in Moab. The current generation is old—having been introduced in 2010—but a series of small updates and roots shared with the old Mercedes-Benz ML-class have kept its appeal alive. Part of the Grand Cherokee's appeal lies in its ability to be tailored precisely to the needs of its owners. The base Laredo offers all the Grand Cherokee's legendary capability both on- and off-road at a tolerable price, while the upscale Summit coddles its occupants with a luxury-trimmed interior. Regardless of which version you choose, the Grand Cherokee is thoroughly competent—and thoroughly enjoyable.
What's New for 2020?
The diesel six-cylinder is no longer available. A single-pane sunroof is standard on Limited and Trailhawk models. The new Premium Lighting Group is available on Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited, and Trailhawk models and includes bi-xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, signature daytime running lights, LED fog lamps and auto high-beam headlamps. New wheel designs are available for the High Altitude model, and the Active Safety Group—which includes forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, active lane-keeping, and automatic high-beams—is now available on the Laredo trim. Previously, it was limited to Limited and pricier. The Overland and Summit models get new interior-color options.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
- Laredo: $33,540
- Upland: $37,490
- Altitude: $39,635
- Limited: $41,350
- Limited X: $46,445
- Trailhawk: $46,450
- Overland: $47,790
- High Altitude: $50,535
- Summit: $53,490
From the pricing list, it's obvious there's a Grand Cherokee for every taste and budget. The Limited X includes a good amount of luxury trim—including leather seats (heated in front), Uconnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 20-inch wheels—without the Limited's flashy chrome trim. And as an added bonus, its hood apes the vented SRT piece. Also, you're buying a Grand Cherokee; get all-wheel drive. It's between $2000 and $3000, depending on the trim level.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Grand Cherokee's base engine is a V-6, but a V-8 is optional on Limited trims and above. The base V-6 pulls strongly and transmits very little vibration into the cabin, so it's the powerplant we'd prefer; it's well matched to the Grand Cherokee's heft, and it does an admirable job of motivating it around town and merging into traffic. No matter the configuration, the Grand Cherokee has brawny towing capacity—6200 pounds for V-6 models, 7200 pounds with the V-8—that kicks its usefulness up another notch. There's nothing sporty about this utility vehicle. In the 2019 Grand Cherokee, rough stretches of pockmarked pavement send shivers through the chassis and into the cabin. The optional air suspension remedies this, as our Trailhawk test vehicle provided a more refined ride. The steering is precise and has a nice heft to it; the Jeep tracks straight, which makes for laid-back highway cruising. Soft in its first couple inches of travel, the Grand Cherokee's brake pedal firms up quickly, and performance is on par with the rest of the class. For those seeking the ultimate in Grand Cherokee performance, check out the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, which we review separately.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
With the gasoline V-6 under its hood, the Grand Cherokee is fuel efficient by SUV standards, and in our testing, its highway fuel-economy estimates held true. The V-8 may have greater towing capacity, but it's noticeably thirstier. Equipped with the standard V-6 engine, our test vehicle delivered 25 mpg on our real-world highway fuel-economy loop, matching its 25-mpg EPA rating.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Stepping into the Grand Cherokee's cabin provides either a sense of ruggedness or luxury depending on the model. The contoured dashboard houses an infotainment touchscreen atop chunky, redundant buttons and controls, and a 7.0-inch driver-facing LCD display is flanked by analog gauges. Jeep designers use soft-touch materials and leather where it counts—armrests, upper door panels, the dashboard—but cheaper hard plastic persists elsewhere. Behind its second row of seats, the Grand Cherokee has space for 11 of our carry-on cases and a total of 24 when we stowed the rear seat. The rear seat splits and folds in a 60/40 fashion; the operation is neat and tidy, too, requiring just one action to release the headrest and flop the seat down to its flat position.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Jeep's excellent infotainment system—called Uconnect—is among our favorites for its ease of use and snappy response times. A dinky 5.0-inch display is standard; we'd recommend stepping up to the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. Available rear-seat entertainment and in-car Wi-Fi make the Grand Cherokee a movie theater on wheels. A six-speaker audio system is standard, with the option of SiriusXM satellite radio; a 19-speaker Harman/Kardon setup is optional on the Overland and standard on Summit trims.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
It may have missed the best crash-test ratings by a wide margin—it did not perform well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's small-overlap front-crash tests but the Grand Cherokee still offers a comprehensive list of driver-assistance features. The Jeep Active Safety package is optional on Limited, Trailhawk, and Overland models. It includes adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and parallel- and perpendicular-parking assist. Buyers of the top-dog Summit receive all of these driver-assistance features as standard equipment. Key safety features include:
- Available adaptive cruise control
- Available automated emergency braking
- Available active parking assist
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The Jeep's warranty is nothing special. The Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe all offer much greater coverage, including 10-year powertrain warranties and two more years of coverage on the bumper-to-bumper warranty.
- Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for 2 years (Overland, Trailhawk, High Altitude, and Summit models only)

Jeep
Slightly refreshed last year, the Cherokee returns with no major changes for 2020. Still, we should point out the extra safety features available on Sport, North, Limited and Overland models, Alexa Skill technology available with the 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system and the addition of two new body colours. Under the hood, the 2.4-litre four-cylinder, the 2.0-litre turbo and the 3.2-litre V6 engines are all mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission for better fuel economy.
