Table Of Contents

What Is Bally Sports Detroit?

Bally Sports Detroit is a regional sports network (RSN) that operates primarily in the state of Michigan. This is by design. The network has secured rights to broadcast games in its specific geographic area. In addition to carrying Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings games, you get access to a lot more.

In particular, you can also watch a select number of Grand Rapids Griffins games. They play in the American Hockey League (AHL) and are the top minor league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. Furthermore, Bally Sports Detroit airs a number of Michigan and Michigan State regular-season college hockey games.

If scheduling conflicts arise, games may be shifted from Bally Sports Detroit to its substation, Bally Sports Detroit Plus. This typically occurs when the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons are playing on the same night.

Streaming Bally Sports Detroit

If you want access to streaming content from this RSN, you’ll need to sign up for DirecTV Stream. They are currently the only provider. Until 2020, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV provided access to it but since then, they haven’t managed to sign a contract.

DirecTV Stream

DirecTV Stream

For subscribers in Michigan and a very limited section of northern Ohio, DirecTV Stream provides Bally Sports Detroit with three of their plans:

  • Choice ($84.99/mo): 90+ channels including a number of sports channels like ESPN, FS1, NBA TV, and more.
  • Ultimate ($94.99/mo): 130+ channels adding even more sports channels like FS2, CBS Sports Network, NHL Center Ice, and more.
  • Premier ($139.99/mo): Basically the same as the Ultimate plan but with a ton of premium channels from Cinemax, HBO, Showtime, and Starz.

Depending upon where you are located, you may get a number of other RSNs. Most people in Michigan get only Bally Sports Detroit. But subscribers in Toledo, OH also get Bally Sports Cincinnati, Bally Sports Great Lakes, and Bally Sports Ohio.

Bally Sports Detroit Alternatives

If you don’t feel like DirecTV Stream is a fit for your needs or budget, your only other option is to go with a cable or satellite provider. However, most fans are not looking so much for the Bally Sports Detroit channel as they have access to the games they air. And in that regard, you have some options.

The simplest thing to do is limit yourself to nationally televised games. In this case, you can get a streaming service like FuboTV or Sling TV, which offer a lot for less money. The problem with this is that local blackouts still hold for most games so you won’t see a lot of these games.

If you don’t mind waiting to watch, you can subscribe to MLB.TV or NBA League Pass. MLB.TV allows you to watch every Detroit Tigers game — but only after it finishes. NBA League Pass allows you to watch every Detroit Pistons game after it ends.

On the other hand, if you don’t live in the Michigan area, MLB.TV and NBA League Pass will allow you to watch these games live. You can also watch some Detroit Red Wings games live on ESPN+.

TVs and Other Streaming Devices for Bally Sports Detroit

Just because you are streaming Bally Sports Detroit does not mean you and your friends need to huggle around a computer or tablet to watch your favorite Detroit team games. DirecTV Stream allows you to watch games on a wide variety of devices from the smallest smartphones when you are on the go to the latest big-screen TVs while relaxing at home.

The popular TV streaming devices are all supported: Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku. So is the Chromecast device, which allows your TV to display Bally Sports Detroit on your TV cast from your phone.

Or, if you want to watch on your phone, DirecTV Stream supports iOS and Android mobile devices.

If you have a Samsung smart TV, DirecTV Stream supports most models. Or if you want to go old school, you can watch it on your web browser. And DirecTV Stream has its own device, which makes switching from cable even easier.

There is also a Bally Sports App. It supports more smart TVs as well as the Xbox One. You can use this app with your DirecTV Stream account.

What is the cheapest way to stream Bally Sports Detroit?

If you’re looking to stream this network without going into financial distress, you should take a look at DirecTV Stream. For $84.99 monthly, you’ll get access to this channel and 90+ others. You may also get access to streaming content from Bally Sports Detroit through your cable provider, though it may be more expensive.

Why can’t I get Bally Sports Detroit if I’m outside of the coverage area?

You can only get Bally Sports Detroit from any provider if you live in its coverage area. Networks such as Bally Sports Detroit are designed to provide coverage over a limited area. This ensures that other teams won’t have to compete with other channels for viewers in their home markets. Therefore, you can only get access to this particular network if you live in its primary broadcasting zone.

Why are some games blacked out?

Games can be blacked out for a variety of reasons. For example, feeds from regional sports networks may be shown to audiences in a team’s home market even if the game is being shown to the rest of the country on networks such as ESPN. This helps to ensure that the regional networks can maximize their ability to attract local subscribers.

Can I subscribe to Bally Sports Detroit directly?

There is a chance that you’ll be able to gain direct access to this network at some point in the future. Bally Sports has indicated that it would like to provide this service. However, the only way to do so today is to subscribe to DirecTV Stream or another third party that offers the channel as part of its lineup.

What can I do if I’m outside of Bally Sports Detroit’s coverage area?

If you are outside of Bally Sports Detroit’s coverage area, you cannot get the station. However, there are ways to get some or all of the games. The situation is rather good for MLB and NBA fans. They can watch Tigers and Pistons games with MLB.TV and NBA League Pass. General streaming services like Hulu + Live TV also provide a lot of coverage.

What happened to Fox Sports Detroit?

Fox Sports Detroit was sold to a company called Diamond Sports Group in 2019 after Walt Disney Group announced that it was going to acquire all Fox Sports Network (FSN) properties. The Department of Justice (DOJ) determined that the acquisition violated antitrust laws because Disney already owned ESPN. All Fox Sports RSNs have been rebranded as Bally Sports.

FOX Sports Detroit is no more. It’s now Bally Sports Detroit. Here’s what that means for you and how can you make sure you don’t miss Detroit Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings games.

It’s actually 19 regional sports networks. Bally Sports Detroit is part of that group. Each regional network provides TV coverage of their hometown sports teams. In Michigan, that means the Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings.

It all stems from a deal made last November between Sinclair and casino operator Bally’s. The 10-year deal gives Bally’s naming rights to the regional sports networks. This partnership is worth $88 million, according to Forbes.

If you already received FOX Sports Detroit on your cable or streaming service, the only thing different is the name. The channel numbers and positions remain the same.

One change will be your mobile device. The FOX Sports GO app will eventually automatically update to the Bally Sports app, which will live stream games. You’ll still need to verify your TV provider account.

Because of ongoing disputes between Sinclair and most of the major cable replacement platforms, none of the Bally Sports networks are available on YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, fuboTV, Sling or Philo.

Michigan residents can stream Bally Sports Detroit via AT&T TV by CLICKING HERE. The network is available with Choice plans and above starting at $84.99/month. It comes with 90+ channels and 20 DVR hours. There’s no contract required.

The Detroit Tigers are a MLB team in the American League Central division. They are one of the eight original American League franchises, founded in 1894 as part of the Western League, and the only Western League team still in its original city. They joined the American League in 1901 and are the oldest AL team with the same name and same city. The Tigers play ball in Comerica Park in downtown Detroit since 2000. Prior to that they played at Tigers Stadium, which was built in 1912. Recent performance hasn’t been great, with the Tigers coming in last in their division with 23 wins and 35 losses.

Tigers fans still love their team and are hoping for great improvements in 2021, but to watch Tigers live you’ll need either a cable television subscription, or a service that allows you to stream the Tigers games. How to watch the Detroit Tigers on YouTube TV

YouTube has recently launched a live streaming service they call YouTube TV. It’s not really different from other streaming options, although it does come from the largest – by far – video streaming site in existence. It’s pretty certain if you stream Tigers game on YouTube TV it will be an awesome experience.

You’ll get access to Fox Sports Detroit and Fox Sports 1 to stream every one of the Tigers games on YouTube TV. In addition, you’ll also have access to ESPN, CBS, and NBC for other MLB games. Plus, there are over 85 other channels to keep you entertained on non-baseball days. The package starts at $64.99/mo. all-inclusive. YouTubeTV comes with a two-week free trial to test it out before committing. The service also includes the MLB and NBA networks as well as PBS, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and many more.

Please read our comprehensive YouTube TV review for more details about the service.

How to watch the Detroit Tigers on Sling TV

Sling TV is a good streaming service, but not if you want to watch a Tigers game live. Unfortunately, Sling TV doesn’t have Fox Sports Detroit, and while it does have Fox Sports 1 there are very few Tigers games on Fox Sports 1. Without Fox Sports Detroit, you’re going to miss nearly all the live Tigers games. Besides Fox Sports 1, Sling TV also has ABC, NBC, ESPN, and TBS.

Sling TV offers the Sling Orange and Sling Blue plans. Both streaming plans cost $35/mo. or you can get Orange + Blue for $50/mo. There are some important differences to note. The Sling Blue plan includes local channels, so that’s what you need for Fox access. If you also want ESPN for other sports content, that’s included in the Sling Orange plan. You can also get a three-day trial to try out Sling TV for free.

Please read our comprehensive Sling TV review for more details.

How to Stream Bally Sports Detroit Live Without Cable

UPDATED August 30, 2021

What streaming services carries Bally Sports Detroit?

DIRECTV STREAM is currently the only live TV streaming service that carries regional Bally Sports channels. FOX Sports Detroit was renamed to Bally Sports Detroit as of March 31, 2021. Subscribers can use an Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku and Google Chromecast with Google TV.

Live Stream Detroit Red Wings Games on Roku, Fire TV

Bally Sports Detroit (formerly Fox Sports Detroit) used to be widely available on live TV streaming services.

Now DIRECTV STREAM is your only option for watching the Detroit Red Wings, the Pistons or Tigers without a cable provider.

The service costs more than other live TV streaming services that have ESPN and FS1.

The Choice plan, which carries 90+ channels, is $84.99 per month. Bally Sports Detroit is only available in Michigan, parts of northeastern Indiana, northwest Ohio and northeastern Wisconsin.

DIRECTV STREAM still has one advantage over paying for DIRECTV, DISH or Spectrum. Your subscription is month to month so you can cancel whenever you want.

So if you’re looking to cut the cord, but still watch NHL hockey or MLB games, you should consider whether its pros outweigh its cons.

Subscribers get three months of HBO Max free (a $45 value) before the $14.99-per-month rate kicks in.

The Choice plan has a wide variety of sports channels including ACC Network, Big Ten Network, ESPN, ESPN2, regional NBC Sports and SEC Network.

All of your local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Telemundo and Univision channels are included. And you get top cable TV channels such as ESPN, ESPN2, ACC Network, TNT, History, CNN and A&E.

And you don’t need to pay for a cable box.

DIRECTV STREAM launched with its own Android TV streaming device, but it now has apps for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, iPhones, web browsers, tablets and Samsung Smart TVs.

You can look over the different channel lineups before deciding whether to sign up.

Why can’t I stream Bally Sports Detroit on Hulu or YouTube TV?

There was a time when regional FOX Sports channels were available on a number of live TV streaming services. That included Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV, fuboTV and YouTube TV.

These streaming services have yet to strike a long-term agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group since the company took ownership of 21 regional Fox Sports networks in 2019.
