Franklin Park puts three referendum questions on April 6 to lighten load from COVID-19

By Tracy Gruen

Pioneer Press|

The village of Franklin Park police station, where village board meetings are held, is seen.

Voters in Franklin Park have few choices in the April 6 general election, since the village president and village trustee races, as well as those for Franklin Park School District 84 and Leyden Township High School District 212 are uncontested. However, the village will have three informational referendum questions on the ballot, according to Roberta Johnson, the village clerk.

The first referendum question whether the village of Franklin Park should encourage the state of Illinois to increase the amount of the general homestead exemption and the senior citizens homestead exemption to help reduce property taxes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Franklin Park Mayor  Barrett Pedersen said some “seniors are feeling the crunch,” and if the referendum passes, it would send a message to the county that local voters desire property tax relief.

The second and third referendum questions deal with small businesses impacted by the pandemic receiving financial relief.

The second asks whether the village should encourage the federal government to provide grant funds to employees of small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the third asks whether federal grants should be provided to the small businesses themselves.

Pedersen said that due to President Joe Biden’s administration’s recent action announcing assistance to small businesses, the second and third referendum questions are moot.  He remained reflective, though, about the struggles small businesses have faced in the past year.

“A lot of restaurants are closing and will never reopen,” said Pedersen, about how the pandemic has negatively impacted small businesses such as restaurants, throughout the county. “A number of people who were working for that industry had income significantly reduced or eliminated.”

Pedersen said that although he is unaware of any Franklin Park restaurants that have had to close during the pandemic, he has heard from many owners that they have struggled. He said he is pleased they will receive relief from the federal government.

“It was an effort to allow our residents to express an opinion to office holders,” Pedersen said in explaining the goal of the informational referendum questions. “Most people aren’t going to write a letter to their representatives.”

He said results will be forwarded to the appropriate officials.
