I. $1,500 Gaming PC Build Overview

ASUS RTX 2070 SUPER DUAL$1,500 is the perfect budget to build a high-end gaming PC with. It will allow you to get a high-end processor and a graphics card that is capable of running games on a 1440P 144Hz+ display, or games at 60 FPS on a 4K display.

This $1,500 gaming PC comes with an Intel Core i7-9700K CPU, an RTX 2070 SUPER GPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 960GB SSD, and a semi-modular 750W power supply.

You also get a 280mm AIO CPU cooler, a high-end motherboard for overclocking, and a nice-looking tempered glass case with three 120mm RGB fans.

Overall, there really isn’t anything this $1,500 system can’t handle. It will pair well with a 1080P 360Hz display for competitve gamers and it will run games on higher resolution displays (like 1440P 240Hz monitors or 4K 144Hz monitors) great, too.

So, if you’ve got a decent amount to spend on a desktop that will last you a long time, the set of parts listed below should do the job for you.

II. Component Breakdown

We chose each of these components for a reason—but there are viable alternatives. Below, we discuss why we chose the components listed above for this build and what other alternatives there are…

1. What About an AMD Processor?

While we chose the Intel Core i7-11700K for this build, you could opt for an AMD CPU instead—especially if you’re looking for better multi-core performance.

The Ryzen 9 5900X is an extremely powerful option and you could use it in this system. However, since it is quite a bit more expensive than the 11700K, you will either have to up your budget a bit, or sacrifice on other parts in this build (case, GPU, CPU cooler, etc.)

The Ryzen 7 5800X is priced slightly less higher the 11700K, but we felt the 11700K offered enough of an in-game performance advantage over the 5800X, that it was the better overall choice. The 5800X would be a worthy option, though, if you’re a streamer or editor who could utilize the additional threads.

2. What About an AMD GPU?

AMD has two solid options that would work in this build: the Radeon VII and the RX 5700 XT.

The RTX 2070 SUPER that we have included in this build goes toe-to-toe with th Radeon VII in terms of in-game performance. However, the RTX 2070 SUPER, on average, tends to come in a bit cheaper.

The RX 5700 XT is quite a bit cheaper than the RTX 2070 SUPER, but it doesn’t offer as much performance as the RTX 2070 SUPER.

So, since there was room in the budget to include the RTX 2070 SUPER in this build, we chose it over the RX 5700 XT. You could definitely opt for the Radeon VII, though, or you could drop down to an RX 5700 XT (which wouldn’t sacrifice too much performance) and that would allow you to upgrade other components in this system.

3. Storage Options

There are a lot of different ways you could handle storage in this build. We chose a simple 960GB SATA SSD as it offers a lot of fast storage for a fairly affordable price. You could spend more and get an NVME M.2 SSD, though. Or, for about the same amount, you could go with a 500GB SSD, and pair it with a 1TB hard drive for even more storage.

4. Plenty of Case Options

While we chose the Corsair iCUE 220T for the case in this build, there are a ton of different options out there that might work better for you. We like the Corsair case because it has plenty of room to hold this system, has a grilled front-panel (for better air intake), comes with a full-length PSU shroud, and offers three preinstalled RGB fans.

And, you get all of that for udner $100. But, again, depending on your own personal preferences, there might be a better case out there for you. If you do opt for a different case, just make sure that it will hold all of your components!

5. How Big of A Power Supply

We use Outervision’s PSU calculator to determine the power consumption for each of our builds. Accoding to Outervision, even in the most extreme scenarios, this $1,500 gaming PC will require a a quality 500W power supply.

1. Which PC is best for gaming?

There really is no answer to the question of what the best computer for gaming is. The best computer for gaming will vary from individual to individual. For instance, if all you want to do is run non-demanding titles like Rocket League, Apex Legends, and Fortnite, you don’t need an extreme $4,000 computer with a multi-GPU setup and an insane liquid cooling configuration.

You could easily get by with a $1,000 build (or less). If you want to game on a new 4K monitor, you’re going to need a much better system because of how much more demanding 4K gaming is. Or, if you want a capable gaming computer that will also serve as a workstation system for your profession, you’ll want to alter the type of system you build or buy to accommodate your needs.

So, the bottom line is that, there is no such thing as the single “best” gaming computer. The reality is that everyone has different needs and a different budget. So, the best gaming PC will be one that gives you the performance you need at a price you can afford.

2. Can you build a gaming PC in 2021?

Due to supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, the price of computer components (especially graphics cards) has skyrocketed. And, while you can still build a gaming PC in 2021, it is going to be much more expensive to do so than it has been in the past.

In fact, whereas building your own PC was always more cost-efficient than buying a similarly-specced prebuilt gaming PC, with the shortages it is now more affordable to purchase a prebuilt system. The reason for this is that companies that supply prebuilt desktops are able to purchase their components in bulk, which allows them to acquire those components at prices that are still reasonable.

For all of the recommended builds below, we’ve included a link to a similarly-specced prebuilt system. And, if you’re looking for the best deal for your money, those are your best bet right now. If you do want to build your own system, though, you could opt to search the used market (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.) for a graphics card, though, and that will help you bring your cost down.

3. Is $2,000 good for a gaming PC?

Yes, a $2,000 budget to put towards a gaming computer will allow you to acquire a high-end gaming desktop. If you’re talking about a prebuilt system, that should be enough to get you an RTX 3080 gaming PC—which is going to be extremely powerful.

And, even with the shorage in GPUs, a $2,000 budget will allow you to build a powerful desktop if that’s the route you choose to go. Just note, though, that you’ll have to accept a less powerful graphics card if you choose to build your own system at the moment.

4. Is building a gaming PC hard?

If you’ve never built a computer before, the good news is that there are a ton of written and video guides out there that do a great job of walking you through the assembly process. 5. Is Intel or AMD better for gaming?

Both processor manufacturers are worthy of considering. In fact, it’s probably not a good idea to commit to one brand over the other and, instead, pick the option that will best fit your budget at the time you go to purchase your components or system.

The reality is that, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the two processor options are going to provide similar in-game performance. What this means is that, for example, if you have ~$200 to spend on a processor, the options available from Intel and AMD at that price range are going to provide near identical in-game performance. So, it’s much better to not commit to either brand, and see which option costs less at the time of purchase.

There are instances where you may prefer one brand over the other, however…

AMD’s Ryzen CPUs generally provide a decent performance boost over similarly-priced Intel processors in multi-threaded applications. So, if you need the extra power in multi-threaded applications, that might be one reason to justify choosing an AMD CPU over an Intel CPU in the same price range.

But, if your main aim is pure gaming performance, it is best to just choose the option that comes with a lower pricetag (and, that includes the cost of a compatible motherboard, as well.)

6. Should I get a gaming laptop or a desktop?

A desktop will always offer more performance for the price than a laptop. However, that’s not to say that laptops aren’t capable gaming machines. If you have a larger budget, you can get yourself a really powerful gaming laptop.

The new RTX 3080 laptops, RTX 3070 laptops, and RTX 3060 laptops are all capable of maxing out any game you throw at them. On the flip side, though, for the same amount of money, you can build or buy a PC that offers more performance and better cooling.

So, whether or not you should get a laptop or a desktop will come down to how much you value the mobility of a laptop. If you need a mobile system that you can take with you on the go, sacrificing a little bit of performance for the mobility that a laptop provides is probably your best option.

If you need as much performance as possible and you don’t mind opting for a stationary system, then a traditional PC offers the most performance regardless of your budget.

7. Which is better? A gaming PC, PS5, or XBox One X?

I’ve touched on this a bit above, but, in terms of hardware and performance potential, a gaming computer will always beat out a PS5 or XBox One X, or any other console. However, that doesn’t mean that a computer would be the best option for you.

For starters, certain titles are only available on consoles. MLB The Show and the God of War Series are console exclusives. If those are the titles you want to primarily play, you probably shouldn’t spend a ton of money to build an extreme gaming computer.

Of course, the PC platform has its own exclusive titles as well (League of Legends, Dota 2, World of Warcraft, etc.) And, of the games that you can run on both the PC and console (Apex Legends, PUBG, Rocket League, Fortnite, etc.), most of them will run better on a PC than they will on a console.

As I mentioned earlier, though, if you love playing games with your friends and they all game on a console, it might not be worth it for you to start playing games on a computer. Regardless of the advantages that computers offer over a consoles, its always more fun to game with your friends than it is to game alone.

So, again, the reality is that, while PC gaming does offer some advantages over console gaming (like more RGB lighting), there isn’t a right answer to which platform is better for you.

In our series of build guides for 2021, as we approach the $1500 budget we would like our PCs to be able to do even the most demanding of rendering/editing/gaming tasks, all in parallel!

    It gives you a plethora of USB options including multiple USB 3.1 ports, 6x SATA ports, an M.2 NVMe slot, and room for 4 sticks of RAM just to name a few. On top of that, you're also getting on-board RGB lighting, support for Crossfire GPU configs, and high-quality integrated 7.1 audio as well as Ethernet. This board does not come with integrated WiFi, so if you need WiFi you'll also need an adapter.

    Processor (CPU): AMD's Zen 2 processors are complete and utter beasts; the R5 3600 is absolutely no exception. This 6-core/12-thread monster has a boost clock speed of 4.2GHz across all 6 cores which results in a ton of gaming potential. The R5 3600 is a unlocked CPU meaning it can be overclocked without an issue.

    An RTX 2070 Super will perform similarly to an RTX 2080 (non-Super) in both 1440p and 4K.

    System Memory (RAM): 16GB of Corsair's Vengeance LPX 3000MHz DDR4 RAM is a great amount and speed for a gaming PC at this level. Corsair's LPX lineup is really awesome which is probably why it has nearly 5-star reviews pretty much everywhere. That said, there are other options available that come with LED lighting and things like that if you're looking for something a little different.

    Power Supply (PSU): EVGA's 650 B3 is a good 80+ Bronze rated power supply with a semi-modular form factor and 5-year warranty. Being that this is a fully-modular power supply, it will make cable management not only easier but result in a cleaner finished product as well.

    Storage: As far as storage goes, I picked you out the best 500GB SSD you could own - Samsung's 860 EVO. Although 500GB is a fair amount of storage, you may want to consider adding more. With that in mind, you should know that it's very easy to do. All you have to do is buy more drives and plug them in. The motherboard in this build will support up to 6 total drives between M.2 and SATA.

    All-in-all, this build is phenomenal, for $1200 you'd be hard-pressed to get a better gaming PC anywhere, and that's a fact.

    Pairing an R5 3600 with the RTX 2070 Super is a recipe for success when it comes to 1440p and 4K gaming.

    Operating System

    When it comes down to picking an operating system for your build, you have a couple of options. One is free, the other is about $100.

    Windows is the first, and probably best option for the most people - specifically Windows 10. Not only is DirectX 12 a Windows 10 exclusive, but if you're looking to play some Forza Horizon 3 on your new PC, well, it's also a Windows 10 exclusive. When it comes to picking out your copy, Windows 10 Home is all that's necessary, and you even have the option of buying an OEM disc or the significantly faster USB flash drive installer.


    The free option would be downloading a copy of a Linux-based operating system like Ubuntu and going from there, there are other options but Ubuntu is generally the best. Although pretty decent, there are some downsides to running a Linux-based system, like less compatibility for games / programs.


    If this is the absolute first gaming PC you’ve ever owned, then chances are high that you don’t have a very good keyboard + mouse combo, or that your monitor is sub-par to really enjoy your experience.

    Personally, I prefer using a wired internet connection over a WiFi connection, and this build would support that right away. But, if you absolutely have to use a WiFi connection, then you're also going to need some kind of WiFi adapter.

    When it comes to actually picking a WiFi adapter, it's a little more complicated than simply picking the cheapest option and plugging it in. Sure, you could do that, but it wouldn't deliver a great experience in most cases, especially not when you might be able to spend just $10 more to get significantly better speeds.

    First, you should determine whether or not your router runs on the "N" or "AC" standard. N is older and only offers support for the 2.4GHz band (not great for gaming) where AC supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Ideally, 5GHz is the band you want to be using for any kind of online gaming as it offers the best performance, but N will work if it's all you have.

    Next comes time to actually pick your adapter, it should be the same standard as your router. This is because you don't need (and won't get better performance) if you're using an AC adapter with an N router. But, if you have an AC router, you don't want to miss out on taking advantage of the 5GHz band by cheaping out on an N adapter.
