It goes without saying that no one buys a Cadillac Escalade to boast to their friends about how they never have to stop at a gas station — it's no Prius. But even when we’re talking about less than 20 miles to a gallon, an efficiency drop is a drop nonetheless.

For 2021, the Escalade saw numerous updates throughout the vehicle, and now we know that includes fuel economy. The 2021 Escalade with rear-wheel drive gets a combined EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 17 mpg and registers 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive model sees a drop of 1 mpg in all three measures.

For 2020, the rear-wheel-drive Escalade registered the same combined 17 mpg, a less efficient 14 mpg in the city, but 23 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive version for 2020 bested the 2021 model by 2 mpg on the highway, with an EPA-rated 21 mpg.

The 2021 Escalade comes standard with a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8; the engine is the same as in the 2020 Escalade, but the newest model has an updated cylinder-deactivation system, which is intended to optimize fuel efficiency. The supplier, Tula Technology, told Automotive News that the new system can improve fuel efficiency by up to 15 percent in specific driving situations.

Nonetheless, factors such as aerodynamics and weight play a large role in fuel efficiency; Cadillac has not yet released the curb weight of the vehicle, but a spokesperson for the luxury automaker told C/D that the 2021 model is heavier than the 2020.

A turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six is optional on the new Escalade, and both engines are paired to a standard 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2021 also shares an independent rear suspension with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the GMC Yukon.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade's Gas V-8 Fuel Economy is a Mixed Bag

Hopefully, the new diesel model will be much more efficient.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade promises a host of flashy upgrades, including an independent rear suspension, massive 38-inch display, and Super Cruise driver-assistance technology. One thing that hasn't changed dramatically is the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Although it gets more sophisticated fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation technology, it makes the same 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque as before. So, we're not surprised that the new Escalade's fuel economy is about the same as its predecessor's—meaning, well, just be glad gas is cheap.

Per the rig's official EPA fuel economy estimates, the new Escalade with rear-wheel drive is rated at 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. Upgrade to four-wheel drive, and the '21 Escalade's figures drop to 14/19/16 mpg (city/highway/combined). It seems those figures apply to both the short- and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV models, and both are both better and worse than those of their 2020 counterparts.

Last year's rear-drive Escalade was rated for 14/23/17 mpg (city/highway/combined), with 4WD dropping those to 14/21/17, meaning they boasted significantly better highway fuel economy but worse city and combined numbers. The drop in the Escalade's highway efficiency is particularly odd given the V-8 engine's highly touted, improved cylinder deactivation feature, but we'll reserve judgment until we test a 2021 Escalade's fuel economy ourselves in the real world. If you're hinging your full-size luxury SUV purchase on fuel economy, the Caddy's crosstown rival, the Lincoln Navigator, tops out at 19 mpg combined.

The new Escalade's fuel economy numbers, predictably, match those of the 2021 Tahoe and 2021 GMC Yukon with the 6.2-liter engine. Of course, we're still awaiting MPG numbers for the new diesel engine coming to GM's big SUVs, which will be a no-cost option on the Cadillac. The 277-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six will pair to the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the V-8 (the two engines share a 460-lb-ft peak torque rating), and should provide a considerable efficiency bump. If the diesel is behaves as it does in the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup, it should feel buttery smooth.

Last month, Cadillac released some pricing information for the 2021 Escalade. Again, surprisingly, there is no difference in the starting price of gas and diesel models. No matter which engine you choose, prices start at $77,490 for rear-drive, short-wheelbase models and rise from there as you add four-wheel drive or jump to the longer-wheelbase model.

Following its official global debut at a special media event in Beverly Hills in February, the very first units of the all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade will go into production in June. Cadillac Society has been here every step of the way to tell you all about Caddy’s new flagship SUV, including being the first to reveal its price, tow ratings, SuperCruise pricing, exterior colors, plus various packages. And today, we’re back to tell you all about the 2021 Cadillac Escalade fuel economy.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released official fuel economy figures for the 2021 Escalade and its 6.2L V8 gasoline engine (production code L87). The numbers are as follows:

  • 2WD: 15 MPG city, 20 MPG highway and 17 MPG combined 
  • 4WD: 14 MPG city, 19 MPG highway and 16 MPG combined

Compared to the outgoing model, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade fuel economy adds one mpg in the city, but loses three mpg on the highway for the 2WD model. Meanwhile, models equipped with 4WD lose two mpg on the highway and one mpg combined.

The standard engine in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 gasoline motor (production code L87). Featuring variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, and Dynamic Fuel Management, the Small Block V8 is rated at 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. It mates to Cadillac’s new 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade will also offer a more efficient engine in the form of the turbodiesel 3.0L I6 (production code LM2) as a no-cost option. Output from the diesel six is rated at 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. Like the gasoline engine, the turbo-diesel also mated to Caddy’s new 10-speed auto gearbox. Fuel economy figures for the diesel engine are currently not unavailable, but according to Escalade Marketing Manager Dave Schiavone, the gains should be “significant” compared to the standard gas V8.

Meanwhile, the previous-generation Escalade was offered exclusively with the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 gasoline engine (production code L86). It was rated at 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm, and featured variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and Active Fuel Management. 2015-2017 models mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission, while 2018-2020 models got the 10-speed automatic.

When you imagine a semi-autonomous vehicle, you probably picture a sedan, something with a little maneuverability. Maybe it's electric and has a "T" on its snout. Makes sense. We've got a Tesla Model 3 in our long-term fleet, and its Autopilot driver-assist system enjoys widespread name recognition (even if it doesn't actually deliver the capability promised by its moniker). But Tesla's system, for all its hype, doesn't allow hands-free driving. That capability is currently available only from Cadillac, and they're confident enough to offer it in a towering six-foot-four SUV with a Duramax diesel under the hood.

The 2021 Escalade joins the CT4 and CT5 as the only models available with General Motors's Super Cruise hands-free driving technology, which was introduced on the CT6 sedan and can operate on more than 200,000 miles of divided highways in the United States. Our test car arrived with that $2500 option, as well as the Escalade's new 3.0-liter turbo-diesel option, which comes at no extra charge. A 6.2-liter V-8 is the standard powertrain.

At 277 horsepower, the inline-six is considerably less powerful than the standard 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, although its 460 pound-feet of torque matches the V-8. Diesel engines are renowned for their towing capabilities, but selecting the 3.0 diesel actually knocks 200 pounds off the Escalade's maximum tow rating (to a still-robust 8000 pounds in rear-wheel drive form, 7800 when equipped with four-wheel). The diesel's strength is its fuel economy. The EPA estimates rear-wheel-drive models will achieve 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, compared to the 6.2's 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. Selecting the four-wheel-drive configuration saps a single mile per gallon from each measurement. We didn't get the chance to test the diesel-equipped Escalade on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, but the four-wheel-drive 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Duramax achieved 27 mpg (1 mpg better than its EPA estimate) in our test, so we can expect similar results from the big Caddy. The EPA figures that choosing the diesel in a four-wheel-drive Escalade will save you $1000 per year in fuel costs.

Even though the diesel's muted grumble sounds odd coming from an opulent six-figure luxury SUV, it's never too intrusive in the cabin. Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the engine is smooth, linear, and provides robust torque throughout the power curve. Cadillac says that Escalades equipped with the diesel will reach 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, although our test Tahoe reached that speed in 7.8 seconds and went from 50 to 70 mph in 6.1 seconds. An Escalade powered by the 6.2-liter V-8 reached 60 mph nearly two seconds quicker.

Drag races aren't the diesel Escalade's specialty, but long-range highway driving certainly is. Combine exceptional fuel economy, hands-free driving, and a luxurious cabin, and you're on your way to highway euphoria. This fifth-generation Escalade's dash is dominated by a 38-inch curved OLED screen that brings to mind a Best Buy Black Friday bonanza. Cadillac took advantage of that huge display, introducing augmented-reality navigation that overlays directional arrows on a video feed from the front-facing camera. There's also a night vision camera—a $2000 option—that highlights animals and pedestrians with bright yellow squares. Our Platinum-trim test truck came equipped with a rear-seat entertainment system, so we plugged in an Xbox and, using the onboard Wi-Fi, dropped into a match of Call of Duty: Warzone. Climb into the third row, and you'll be surprised at the amount of space back there—a dividend from the new compact independent-rear-suspension setup. At six-foot-seven, even I could last a few hours back there.

Combine the nicest interior from Cadillac with the optional air suspension and magnetorheological dampers, and the result is an exceptionally luxurious family SUV that can also tow your boat or horse trailer. Of course, all this slick versatility carried an $111,865 as-tested price, but that doesn't seem to bother Cadillac shoppers, who are readily forking over more than $100,000 for their 2021 Escalades. But if you hung onto your GameStop stock a little too long and want an Escalade that's slightly less financially profligate, we have some advice: Skip the night vision, keep the Super Cruise, and go diesel.
