Places to SUP

Whether you have your own stand-up paddleboard or are renting equipment for the day, here’s where you can get on the water to paddle and play.

Where to Go

The City of Colorado Springs has closed Prospect Lake, in Memorial Park, effective immediately, until further notice due to an algae bloom.

Prospect Lake – Enjoy amazing views of Pikes Peak and one of the area's only swimming beaches. Rent a board at the beach house or bring your own equipment. Please note, paddleboards do need a permit and daily passes are available at the boat launch kiosk for $5 per vessel. Season passes are available for $50 at the Sertich Ice Center.

Quail Lake – Pack a picnic and enjoy the views from this little city lake from sunrise to sunset. Please note, paddleboards do need a permit. Daily passes are available for $5 per vessel, or $50 per season pass, at the onsite kiosk.

Rampart Reservoir – Open from mid-May to October this reservoir is a local favorite for SUP activity. Located in Pike National Forest, reservoir sits on a granite plateau approximately 9,000 feet above sea level. A $6 fee will be charged upon arrival.

Catamount Reservoirs – Paddlobaords are allowed on both reservoirs. All access to the reservoirs is through the Pikes Peak Highway toll gate. Make sure to mention you'll only be paddleboarding for a discounted entry fee of $5 per adult. If you plan on making the trip to the summit, you will need to pay the full entry fee.

Manitou Lake – This five-acre reservoir allows non-watercraft from Memorial Day to the Tuesday after Labor Day. the site is easily accessible with a $7 per vehicle charge.

Monument Lake – Approximately five miles north of the Air Force Academy, the charming town of Monument and Monument Lake offer calm waters and free, year-round paddleboarding opportunities.

Palmer Lake – A popular and charming location for those who enjoy paddling under the beautiful blue Colorado sky. Enjoy free entry alongside views of Ben Lomand Mountian.

Big Stratton Reservoir – Located just southwest of the intersection of Lake Avenue and S. Nevada Avenue., Stratton Open Space offers 318 acres of open space, trails, and wildlife habitat for Colorado Springs. The site is free and open to the public.

Lake Pueblo State Park – Located just 40 minutes south of Colorado Springs, Lake Pueblo offers warm water, mild winds and 60 miles of shoreline for water activities. Access the park with a daily $8 pass or $80 season pass.

Please note - All fees, permits and information are subject to change.

Where to Take a Class

Dragonfly Paddle Yoga takes the art of balance to a whole new level with guided yoga classes on stand-up paddleboards. These classes take place year-round both indoors and out depending on the season. For even more fun, try out their Paddle GLOWGA classes for a colorfully illuminated sunset experience on the water.

SUP Colorado Springs offers a basic lesson with each paddleboard rental and makes getting on the lake a breeze. Take a SUP yoga class Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The company is the only one working directly with the City of Colorado Springs and also donates a percentage of proceeds to local community programs.

Aurora Reservoir (stand up paddleboard, kayak, doggie paddle?) - ALL levels

Details

Aurora Reservoir is an unknown gem just several miles east of Denver proper. The water is clean (good drainage and no motor boats unlike Chatfield and Cherry Creek), calm and there are a lot of coves to explore. If you are new to SUP (standup paddle boarding), this is a perfect venue! I can help you with your board and give you a few pointers, but really, SUP isn't all that hard :)

WHAT TO BRING:
1) $10 to get in and they don't take Discover apparently. There is a season pass, but it is only good until the end of the year. - I think I might be doing this 4 more times (every other weekend until like 10/15 ish) and might try a couple different venues after this time. Thus the pass isn't worth it at this point.

2a) A SUP/Kayak/whatever vehicle you can use (no powered vehicles allowed)
2b) Rent an SUP or kayak at the event location--
https://www.auroragov.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=16242704&pageId =16602037
The rates are not the best (I think like $15-20/hr. and no multi-hour discounts, but they are right next to where we will be setting up.
2c) Rent somewhere in town

3) Life jacket as this is required. It just has to be on your conveyance, but if you are a poor swimmer - please wear it! I have 3 extra, so let me know if you need one....

4) Whistle as this is required at Aurora Reservoir. I have these on my life jackets if you borrow one of them.

- Some to drink as it can get hot!
- Sunscreen
- Towel in case you fall in the water (it happens)
- Swimsuit or whatever you don't care about getting wet
- Sandals, boat shoes, etc. are highly recommended as there are some rocks in the water and we will probably be beaching a couple times. When on the water, I take mine off and strap to my board.
**Camp chair or something to sit on in case we can't get a picnic table **

https://www.auroragov.org/things_to_do/reservoirs/aurora_reservoir

--> Please do your best to get to the Meetup by 9am due to crowds and parking (park in the Lower Lot, closest to the water). It could take 15 minutes or so to get everyone’s boards or kayaks inflated. I hope to have everybody in the water and launched by 9:15 a.m. If you aren’t ready to rock n roll by launch time, good luck trying to find us as we don’t have a pre-set route and there will be dozens of folks on the water. <--

Apres-event: We shall see what people want to do. I may or may not be available, but can offer suggestions.

DISCLAIMERS-
By signing up for this event you agree to do all the research and preparation necessary for the weather and what will be needed for the event.

By signing up for this event you agree to relieve the event host of all responsibilities and liabilities for anything that may occur during the event as well as any accidents driving to and from the event.

A young man paddle boarding

Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or SUPing, is one of Colorado’s newest obsessions

Stand up paddling, most commonly called “SUPing” has recently become an extraordinarily popular sport throughout the country. It’s a great core workout, and there’s little else that’s as pleasant as propelling yourself around a lake or down a river on a warm day. If you’ve been dying to give SUP a go, check out some of these Colorado hot spots.

Front Range SUP options: Denver and Fort Collins

1. Cherry Creek Reservoir

If your goal is to stay close to Denver, the Cherry Creek Reservoir is a great option. While the views aren’t as fantastic as they are at some other Colorado reservoirs in the mountains, there are 880 acres of water surface to paddle around on. If you don’t have your own SUP, boards can be rented from Cherry Creek Marina inside Cherry Creek State Park. There’s an entrance fee to get into the park, so plan for that, too. The park’s entrance is located at 4201 S. Parker Road, Aurora, CO 80014.

2. Big Soda Lake Reservoir

Another popular option close to the Denver/Boulder area is Big Soda Lake Reservoir in Lakewood. The small lake is located close to the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, another favorite area attraction. Powerboats aren’t allowed out here so you won’t have any wake to contend with. The reservoir is located in Bear Creek Lake Park (15600 W. Morrison Road, Lakewood, CO 80465.) Rentals can be snagged at the Soda Lakes Marina.

3. Union Reservoir

Located in Longmont, Union Reservoir is a pleasant alternative to the Boulder Reservoir for your next SUP adventure. The crowds are far less intense and you’ll still get some great views along the Front Range. Fun fact: Union Reservoir is also one of the few natural lakes in Colorado. There’s a fee to use the reservoir, and once you’re there you can rent a SUP from Rocky Mountain Paddleboard. Find Union Reservoir at 461 County Road 26, Longmont, CO 80504.

4. Horsetooth Reservoir Paddle

You won’t find much seclusion at this Fort Collins area favorite, but the location can’t be beat. Horsetooth Reservoir is a popular spot for all kinds of water activities, including jet skis and powerboats. If you need a board, try renting from Inlet Bay Marina or Mountain SUP. Plug Inlet Bay Marina’s address into your GPS (4314 Shoreline Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80526) and be ready to pay the entrance fee.

SUPing Deeper in the Mountains

5. Grand Lake

SUPing on Colorado’s largest and deepest lake is a blast, and the mountain scenery that surrounds the lake is top notch. You’ll be tempted to simply sit on your board and soak it all in. Rocky Mountain National Park is nearby and the town of Grand Lake is lovely, too. Rent from the Grand Lake Marina, located at 1246 Lake Avenue, Grand Lake, CO 80447.

6. Lake Dillon

Stand up paddle boarding on Lake Dillon is truly excellent. Tall mountain peaks, showcasing the best of Summit County’s well-known scenery, surround this reservoir. Rentals can be had at the Frisco Bay Marina, located at 267 Marina Road, Frisco, CO 80443. You can also launch your own SUP from the marina. If you bring your own board be sure to have a lifejacket – it’s part of the rules!

7. Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park

Looking for something a bit more difficult than flat-water paddling? If so, the Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park is a perfect choice. It’s the first whitewater park ever built on the Colorado River, and it’s an excellent spot to practice some more advanced skills. Glenwood Adventure Company offers rentals and lessons. Check out the park’s website before venturing out to see the current flow levels. There isn’t an official address for the park, but refer to this map and finding it will be a breeze.

Venturing to Southern and Western Colorado for SUP

8. Vallecito Lake

Vallecito Lake is a Durango-area favorite when it comes to water sports. This large Colorado lake lies in a pretty valley and is worth the excursion. You can bring your own board and use the public boat launch ramp (15100 County Road 501, Bayfield, CO 81122) though a permit may be required. Call the Pine River Irrigation Office at 970-884-2558 before leaving to make sure you have everything in order. If you’ll need a rental, try contacting Doc’s Marina.

9. Blue Mesa Reservoir

Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado’s largest lake, is a widely popular spot. Blue Mesa is 20 miles long and offers visitors plenty of opportunities to explore its shores. If you’re near Gunnison, it’s worth the trip. A popular starting point is the Elk Creek Marina & Visitor Center, which you can find at 24830 U.S. 50, Gunnison, CO 81230. The marina rents SUPs, too.

10. Lake San Cristobal

As Colorado’s second largest natural lake, Lake San Cristobal is a great place for water-based recreation. Its location in the San Juan Mountains in Lake City lends it some gorgeous scenery, and the calm waters are great for stand up paddling. Bring your own SUP, and you can find the public boat launch here.

Lakes near Denver: A summer guide to boating, beaches, rentals and swimming

It’s unofficially summer, and that means it’s time to get lakeside.

But what’s easily accessible from Denver, and what can you do there? It turns out that you have plenty of options within about an hour or less of the city.

Inside Denver:

Swimming is not allowed at any of the lakes within city limits.

Sloan’s Lake is the only Denver lake to allow motorized boats; jet skis and motorized personal watercraft are not allowed on Sloan’s.

You can take non-motorized boats (kayaks, paddle boards, canoes) out on Sloan’s, Rocky Mountain Lake, Berkeley Lake, Smith Lake at Washington Park, and Ferril Lake at City Park.

If you bring your own vessel, you’ll need to pay for an annual permit, which can run from $49 for a paddleboard or kayak to $245 for a motor boat. Prices are higher for non-residents.

You do have the option of renting non-motorized boats without a permit at City Park and Wash Park.

Aurora Reservoir – Aurora

The Aurora Reservoir covers over 30,000 acres of plains territory with over 800 acres of water surface. It’s located east of Denver in Colorado’s second-largest city, Aurora. Aside from being part of the list of largest parks in the city, the reservoir is also known for having the best H2O around and serves as a drinking water storage facility.

The park is open year-round and permits special events like family reunions, birthday parties, or even company outings.

Activities

Aurora Reservoir Windsurfing Colorado

There are tons of activities that can be done in the reservoir and everyone is welcome to enjoy the place. Aside from water-related activities like fishing, paddle boarding, scuba diving, and swimming (swim beach), archery, going on bike rides, running, hiking, or leisure walks are also some of the things that people can enjoy at the reservoir.

Boating: – Once the reservoir thaws, usually in mid-March, boating season begins and runs until November 30th. There are no gas motors permitted, only electric and none at all. Dry boat storage is also offered. Boats with a compartment capable of holding water or launched to/from a trailer will be inspected at the boat ramp.

Boat rentals are limited, as you can only rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. They do not offer fishing or sailboats for rent.

Aurora Reservoir Dam Colorado Panorama

Fishing: This reservoir is a great place for casting a line, as 4 state record fish has grown in the area, as long as you, or anyone 16 and older, have a valid fishing license. These can be easily purchased in convenience stores but not in the reservoir itself. There is a handicapped-accessible fishing pier where they can go fishing.

Hiking: – The 8.5-mile trail around the lake is surrounded by scenic views.

Swimming: – The swim beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Swim at your own risk as there are lifeguards only through July.
