Best gas mileage used minivan

Best gas mileage used minivan DEFAULT

Honda Odyssey by Navigator84 - CC BY-SA 4.0

When the minivan came on the scene way back in 1983, it was an unequivocal success here in the United States. As soon as Dodge and (now defunct) Plymouth began to sell the Voyager and Grand Caravan, families found much to love in their roomy interiors, fair gas mileage, and a huge variety of configurations. Those that grew up in the ’80s or ‘90s no doubt have fond memories of piling into minivans with all of their friends and heading to school or soccer practice.

Over the years, every major manufacturer joined in on the popularity of minivans, which peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s. Today, the SUV craze has caused a huge demise in the popularity of the minivan due to the gradual morphing of SUVs into family vehicles that don’t necessarily look like family vehicles. Even the originators of the minivan (Dodge) recently stop selling their legendary Grand Caravan model due to poor sales.

Fortunately, many manufacturers have continued to build minivans for families who are looking for the ultimate companion that excels at shuttling around people and all their stuff. This article will cover the 8 best minivans based on their reliability and their overall rating with reviewers and owners alike.

The 8 best used minivans on the market today:

1. 2015 Honda Odyssey

Predicted Reliability Rating:55 (J.D. Power)

Used Price Range: $15k to $25k

The Honda Odyssey is, bar none, the absolute favorite among both car reviewers and owners alike. For 2015, the Honda Odyssey impresses with a massive interior that can swallow 150 cubic feet of cargo, high-quality interior appointments, solid handling, a powerful engine, high safety rating, and great fuel economy.

The 2015 model is especially notable for its stellar reliability rating. You may pay a little more for an Odyssey vs. other vehicles in the class but it’s absolutely worth the price.

2. 2019 Kia Sedona

Predicted Reliability Rating:45 (J.D. Power)

Used Price Range: $22k to $31k

Although most sales in the segment go to Honda, Toyota, and Chrysler, it’s best not to forget about the awesome Sedona van from Kia as an option. You can pick up a gently used Sedona with extremely low mileage for the same price as a much older Honda or Toyota.

Throw in a predicted reliability rating that’s higher than the Honda Odyssey and it’s hard to pass this one up. It has a pleasing interior with tons of room and tech features but it lacks the easy fold seats and handling of rivals like the Odyssey. Still, this is an awesome van for the money.

CPOs ARE BETTER THAN BUYING NEW

If you’re looking for new cars, a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) car might help you buy a like-new car at a significant discount vs. MSRP. Here’s why CPOs are better than buying new.

3. 2017 Chrysler Pacifica

Predicted Reliability Rating: 3.55 (J.D. Power)

Used Price Range: $20k to $31k

The Pacifica is the replacement for the venerable Town and Country van, which was killed off in 2016. Formerly a full-size SUV wagon, the Pacifica is a rock solid van that offers a powerful V6, a quiet smooth ride, and one of the nicer interiors in the class. The Pacifica also offers a full set of drivers assist features, great technology, and family-friendly niceties like rear-seat entertainment systems.

You can pick one of these up for a great price, especially if you’re willing to settle in for a lower LX trim line. However, the luxury goodies are found on top-trim touring and limited. This van also carries a solid predicted reliability score as well.

4. 2015 Chrysler Town and Country

Predicted Reliability Rating:35 (J.D. Power)

Price Range: $11k to $22k

Chrysler knows a thing or two about minivans and it shows in the design on the 2015 Town and Country. Although it pulls in a lower reliability rating than the stalwart Honda, it bests the Sienna in reliability. Its real calling card is its interior flexibility and luxurious appointments that impress both owners and reviewers alike.

Stow and Go seating is a trick option that allows the rear seats to be instantly folded into the floor of the Town and Country. A potent V-6 that gives solid fuel economy ratings of 18 City and 25 Hwy rounds out the good stuff. These can be found a little cheaper than the competition, which makes them an even better deal.

DID YOU KNOW?

Most car dealerships are independently owned and operated, so you might pay thousands more in fees at one dealership than at another. Here’s how to find a good car dealership.

5. 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan

Predicted Reliability Rating: 3.55 (J.D. Power)

Price Range: $19k to $21k

The Dodge Caravan’s last production year was 2019 and has a design that has shouldered on for nearly 10 years. It’s not the most comfortable van in this group and it does not come loaded with tech and safety features like the Pacific or the Odyssey.

What it does offer is a solid powertrain, roomy interior, and good reliability. Best of all, it can be had for a great price! If you’re a budget shopper who’s not interested in bells and whistles, this minivan is for you.

6. 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Predicted Reliability Rating:35 (J.D. Power)

Price Range: $30k to $37k

Although the Pacifica can be found without a hybrid powertrain, it’s the plugin version of this minivan that makes it a star. Since this is the only hybrid minivan on the market, you will pay more up front but you’ll enjoy 30 miles of electric-only range, near-instant acceleration, and enhanced gasoline fuel economy.

These come with a solid reliability rating of 35 and can be picked up for a relatively affordable price. Keep in mind, the Hybrid version of the Pacifica is also more loaded up with equipment and luxury amenities.

7. 2018 Honda Odyssey

Predicted Reliability Rating:25 (J.D. Power)

Price Range: $22k to $31k

For 2018, Honda completely redesigned the ever-popular Odyssey van. Engineers added in even more family-friendly features like a system that allows you to speak to rear passengers, a built-in vacuum, and over 20 cupholders scattered throughout the cabin.

This Honda also brings a solid reliability rating (although not as high as previous years) and a powerful engine to the table as well. Keep in mind, few vehicles hold their value quite as well as the Odyssey, so you’ll pay more for it up front than the competition but enjoy a lower depreciation over time.

8. 2015 Toyota Sienna

Predicted Reliability Rating:25 (J.D. Power)

Price Range: $13k to $26k

The Sienna is the other favorite minivan amongst lovers of the family shuttle. Reviewers and owners compliment the Toyota on its absolutely massive interior, quality interior appointments, and powerful engine. It carries a high safety rating and also returns a solid fuel economy rating of 19 MPG city and 25 MPG highway.

Although Toyota is typically known for its reliability, this particular year of Toyota Sienna brings in a less than stellar 25 reliability rating from J.D. Power. Still, this is a solid option for growing families.

The Top 7 Best MPG Minivans (Fuel Efficient)

Gone are the days of minivans being just basic boxy shuttles for carting the kids to soccer practice or hauling home the groceries. These days, automakers are churning out a new, more modern wave of passenger vans that prove that safety, fuel efficiency and adaptability needn’t necessarily compromise a vehicle’s style.

Just as the trend of crossover SUVs are ever more competing with their full- and mid-size sedan counterparts, minivans these days are increasingly taking their cue  – in terms of aesthetics, specifically – from SUVs.

The result is a blending of the best of both worlds, making for a minivan that’s enjoyable to drive and just as easy on the eyes as it is on the wallet at the pumps.

To make the hunting process even easier, you can buy any of Shift's cars, vans and SUVs directly from the comfort of your own home, knowing that there are no hidden concerns – thanks to their 150-point inspection – and that you are getting a fair, up-front price from the get-go.

Kia Sedona

First available in the United States in 2005, the Kia Sedona lands itself on this list of best minivans first and foremost in terms of its overall value and also for its stellar safety ratings. Toyota Sienna

Toyota Sienna

With an all-new look for the 2021 Sienna, Toyota ditches the stodgy appearance of yesteryear's versions of the minivan, and an entirely hybrid roster of trim levels makes it an especially attractive alternative among its competitors. What's more, the Toyota Sienna stands as the lone hybrid contender on this list, banking 35 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the freeway. It's also the only minivan on this rundown that offers an all-wheel drive option, too. The more modern-looking body, wider grille, and thinner, more angular headlight lamps of the new Sienna take their cue from the 2020 Toyota Highlander, lending the van a more SUV-like look and feel. The Sienna's interior has also undergone a drastic redesign but it still prioritizes utility and sensibility. While the V-6 engine from earlier years is no longer available, the van's basic hybrid powertrain is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and twin electric motors, allowing the Toyota Sienna to top its class in terms of fuel efficiency. While new Siennas start at $34,460, used late-year models go for around $20,000.

As the line between minivans and SUVs becomes increasingly blurred with each new model year of vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica, with the former pulling inspiration from the other and vice versa, these days it's less about having to choose one over the other and more about having your cake and eating it too. More and more, automakers are sending the blasé minivan driving experience out to pasture and reconfiguring what was once upon a time the standard grocery getter into sleek, stylish vehicles that are just as practical as their predecessors. The Pacifica sports an updated appearance both inside and out, with a 10.1-inch infotainment display with Amazon Alexa, a wireless connection for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an interior camera system to keep an eye on whatever's going down in the back seats, and depending on the trim, up to a dozen USB ports. Volkswagen Routan

Crafters of iconic minivans ever since the arrival of the VW bus in the 1950s, Volkswagen surprisingly sought a lending hand from Chrysler when designing the Routan, which was in production from 2008 to 2013. Essentially a repackaging, repurposing and rebranding of the classic front-wheel-drive Dodge Grand Caravan, at first glance the Routan embodies all the aesthetics of a Volkswagen. But under the surface, it's all Chrysler, including the 283-hp V-6 engine that gets 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the freeway. Discontinued in 2014, the original MSRP for 2013 models was between $27,020 and $44,280, depending on the trim. These days used Routans go for as little as $13,000.

Buying a Used Minivan? Is the 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey a $5k Bargain? 2006 Odyssey Touring Review.

EPA ratings aren’t always top of mind for the segment’s shoppers, but the best fuel-efficient minivans do return noticeable advantages over the worst. Consider: Looking at the combined fuel-economy marks of the traditional minivan contenders, the most economical choices provide nearly 16 percent higher EPA grades and, overall, they save customers some $1,500 in five-year fuel costs. And the two minivan alternatives on this list are even more frugal when it comes to fuel usage. It’s also worth noting that while today’s next-gen crossovers can surpass modern-day minivans in terms of fuel efficiency, the latter continue to offer the unmatched interior versatility—and cabin space—that are the key purchase factors for most folks here.

Chrysler Town & Country

The 2015 Chrysler Town & Country touts an award-winning Pentastar V6 engine that serves up a best-in-class 283 hp, a robust 260 lb.-ft. of torque and EPA ratings of 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway/20 mpg combined, all due to significant efforts from Chrysler engineers. Thus, the Town & Country also features standard low-rolling-resistance tires, complemented by low-drag brake calipers and rear bearing, and there’s even a dedicated “fuel economizer” driving mode that was developed to help owners squeeze every last mile from every last drop of gas. Meanwhile, the 2016 model ups the ante with a 90th Anniversary Edition—to help celebrate a major Chrysler milestone—while then retaining its position among the most fuel-efficient minivans in the industry.

Dodge Grand Caravan

Much the same goes for the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan as for its corporate cousin, the Chrysler Town & Country, except perhaps the whole “going forward” thing: The Grand Caravan isn’t expected to see a next-gen version in the near future, although it stands out today for serving up both a powerful 283-hp Pentastar V6 and its EPA line of 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway/20 mpg combined. Oh, and there is one other big difference between the Dodge and the Chrysler—and the rest of the “regular” minivans—since the Grand Caravan is priced at $21,795 and that’s by far the lowest MSRP in the class. In fact, the Dodge has a discount of $5,400 as compared to its next least expensive rival.

Honda Odyssey

No. 1 among the most fuel-efficient minivans is the 2015 Honda Odyssey, backed by its highway fuel-economy rating of 28 mpg. No other traditional minivan can hit that mark, and it helps the Odyssey also achieve a two-way tie for minivan leadership in EPA combined driving, with a benchmark of 22 mpg, and further return a relatively strong 19 mpg in the city. At the same time, the Odyssey relies on a standard 3.5-liter V6 that can furnish drivers with 248 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, with that output managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Ensuring that unique blend of power and efficiency: Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management technology, capable of shutting off two or three engine cylinders, depending on driving conditions, to maximize miles per gallon.

Kia Sedona

Beneath its surprisingly stylish sheetmetal, the 2016 Kia Sedona will arrive in dealerships for its sophomore selling season with three distinct fuel-economy choices: The standard Sedona—now supplying a rearview camera system and updated seating surfaces fresh from the factory—can leverage its 3.3-liter V6 engine and six-speed SportMatic transmission for 276 hp, 248 lb.-ft. of torque, and EPA results of 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined. With the same engine and more uplevel content, the more efficiency-focused Sedona SX can reach 18 mpg city/25 mpg/21 mpg combined. The range-topping SXL edition gets packed with yet more premium standard features, including climate-controlled first- and second-row seating in premium Nappa leather, but an EPA line of 17/22/19.

Mazda Mazda5

As you might have guessed, the 2015 Mazda Mazda5, which is about 20 inches shorter in length than a traditional minivan, can translate its smaller proportions into higher fuel economy results. More specifically, Mazda’s mini minivan can realize EPA scores of 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. That means the Mazda also leads the most fuel-efficient minivans for city and combined fuel economy, and that’s on top of the vehicle’s fairly well-composed driving dynamics. Moreover, because the Mazda5 is about the size of a compact Sedan on the outside—even as it can swallow more than 44 cubic feet of cargo behind its second row on the inside—drivers enjoy the further fuel-saving benefits of a four-cylinder engine (furnishing 157 hp and 163 lb.-ft. of torque).

Nissan Quest

As is the case with almost everything except sales numbers, the 2015 Nissan Quest serves up superior fuel-economy scores as compared to the average minivan, and it does so while still stocking a standard 3.5-liter V6. Indeed, that engine is good for outputs of 260 hp and 240 lb.-ft. of torque, yet also rings ups an EPA line of 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. The Nissan minivan additionally showcases relatively affordable pricing that’s right in the sweet spot of the segment, but also satisfies customer hunger for available upgrades like “Quick Comfort” heated front seats and blind-spot warning with moving-object detection.  Needless to say, all that helps the Quest qualify as one of the best fuel-efficient minivans in the country.

Toyota Sienna

The Swagger Wagon boasts the only available all-wheel-drive powertrain among the best fuel-efficient minivans, though that setup, rated by the EPA at 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, is at the lower end of our list. On the other hand, drivers who configure the 2015 Toyota Sienna with front-wheel drive, like the rest of its competitors, welcome an extra 2 mpg in all phases of fuel-economy testing. And at that point, the Toyota’s overall EPA line is a middle-of-the-class 18/25/21, thanks to a 3.5-liter V6 that can unleash 260 hp and 245 lb.-ft of torque. There’s nothing middling about content like the “Easy Speak” system, however; that exclusive technology can project the driver’s voice through the vehicle’s audio speakers for improved in-cabin communication.

Ford Transit Connect Wagon

Finally, we come to the Blue Oval’s un-minivan: the 2015 Ford Transit Connect Wagon. Essentially a retail version of Ford’s popular city-sized commercial Van, the Transit Connect Wagon comes in two- and three-row configurations, with regular- and extended-length wheelbases, and while they’re both shorter than traditional minivans, both provide much more space than other likely alternatives. For our purposes, they also offer notably higher EPA scores than the best fuel-efficient minivans. In the standard model, for example, the available 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine pumps out 178 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, then features fuel economy grades of 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. A standard 2.5-liter—rated at 169 hp and 171 lb.-ft. of torque—goes 20/28/23 in both wheelbase lengths.
