The Sky Studio is a tool to make & practice the sheet music of "Sky: children of the light" simply.

Sky Music

Here’s a step by step guide how to create your own visual music sheet.

Without Python

If you do not want to customize the program, and are not interested in getting the latest version, you have several options:

  1. Use the website version
  2. Use the Discord Bot version by typing in the official tcg forum
  3. Download a binary executable:

Please note that support is not provided for executables, so if the program crashes on your machine you are encouraged to try another option.

Then you can skip here to learn how to type notes and to read music sheets.

Using Python

You will need Python >= 3.6 and a few addition packages. We have a dedicated page to explain how to install Python.

Download the Sky Music Sheet Maker by clicking Here. Click on the green “Code” button, then choose “Download ZIP”.

For the sake of an example let’s extract this to your Desktop.

Open Terminal on Mac or Linux, and enter the following command:

On Windows, open a console prompt (cmd.exe) and type:

(If you wish to store the folder elsewhere or change its name, please change the path in the above command accordingly).

Still in the console, enter:

If you have installed our program using pip, simply type instead:

If nothing happens or you get an error, there’s probably something wrong with your Python installation. Write down the error and contact us by Discord.

Where files are stored

Input song files must be put in ‘test_songs’. This directory is placed 2 levels above the command_line_player.py script if you made a manual installation, or inside your home user directory, in a folder named ‘skymusic/’. Music sheets will be written in ’songs_out’. If you want to use different folders, launch the program this way:

A preferences file can be put at the same level than the songs directory, using YAML format (see the example furnished with the code to understand its syntax).

Write your music

We recommend typing out your notation in Notepad or similar before inputting into cmd/Terminal, as it’s easier for you to fix any mistakes this way.

For the benefit of this tutorial we’ll use the most recognised ABC1-5 method, however the program supports several notations:

Note that for musical notations supporting octaves (such as English, Jianpu, and doremi), the starting octave is 1, by convention. Typing a note name without octave (e.g. F) implicitely assumes that it belongs to the starting octave (e.g. F1). So, to indicate that a note belongs to the next octave you will have to write it explicitly (e.g. F2). With our convention, the full range of the instrument is C1-C3. This convention is different from SkyStudio’s which assumes that the instrument range is C4-C6. However, the absolute range actually depends on the instrument type (piano, harp, flute, bass, etc), so nobody’s right or wrong. If you’d like to input notes using Sky Studio’s convention, starting at octave 4, then at the question “Do you want to shift the pitch of your notes?” asked by the program, answer: “-3”.

Separate boxes by using a blank space, for example typing “B3 B4 B5” will produce:

Type letters with no space for a chord, for example typing “A1A3A5 B1B3B5” will produce:

Use . for blank notes, used to signify a pause in the song, for example typing “B4 . B5” will produce:

If using Jianpu notation please use 0 instead


Use - for coloured notes, used to signify pressing buttons in a fast pace one after the other from light to dark colour, for example “A3-B1-B3-B5-C3” will produce:

To indicate a repeat section, use * directly followed by a number, for example “C1C3 *2” will produce:

Add a line break (press enter in Python or in your text editor) to separate song lines with an horizontal divider.


Use ‘#’ to start a lyrics line. Type ‘#’ again to split the lyrics and align words with the chords grid:

You can also use ‘#’ to add a section title, and format it using HTML tags. For instance:

will produce a section title in big, bold, red letters. This will work with HTML output files but be ignored in other formats. Use this with great caution as any error in these tags can break the whole HTML file.

Finally, in the file header you can enter song metadata using ‘#$’. A standard header looks like this:

Tip 1: We usually find 8 boxes a row works best for a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen). Use line breaks to divide your song in rows. Tip 2: In the Python command-line program do not press enter after a blank line as this will end the song. If you need a full blank line in the song use ‘.’ for blank notes or enter a lyrics line with no text.

Step 4 - Input your music!

With your music typed out, now simply copy and paste all of your notes into cmd/terminal after you’ve followed Step 2. To end the song, press ‘Enter’ for a new line, then press ‘Enter’ again on the blank line.

You’ll now be asked to input a recommended key (leave blank if unsure), the octave shift (leave blank if unsure), the song title, original artist and who it was transcribed by (your name). For midi output you will be asked the song tempo in beats per minutes (leave blank if you don’t need it).

Your song will be saved in several formats including HTML to the ‘songs_out’ folder where you saved the sky-python-music-sheet-maker folder.

Finished Example

Let’s look at the intro to Can’t help falling in love with you by Elvis Presley. Following the guide above, in CMD or Terminal we input:

Join our Discord and send us the file so we can upload it here! We can also embed an accompanying video if you have one hosted somewhere. All we ask is that you quality check your sheet before submitting, as others will be learning from it too.

Going further: file formats and SkyStudio compatibility

For input, besides text, the Visual Sheet Maker also accepts its own HTML Visual Sheets (only for sheets generated after July, 2020 1st). This way, you can generate a new version of a visual sheet if you found mistakes in it. The program also accepts Sky-JSON recordings generated by the SkyMusic herokupp website (Manage Recordings->Song->Export song) and the SkyStudio app.

If you intend to share visual sheets beyond our website, you can export them to something else than HTML. PNG is recommended for quick sharing of songs with friends, but cannot be edited or stretched out. TXT formats are useful for sharing song notes. Finally, the JSON recordings (text files ending with .json) can be fed to the SkyMusic website, the Android Sky Music app and to the Android Sky Studio app.

Going even further: customization

The command-line program can be called with arguments to customize the names of the songs directory, as well as reading from a preference file with default answers to questions asked by the program, as well as the possibility to generate a temporary song link at our partner website https://sky-music.herokuapp.com. To activate these options, please refer to the README on the code repository.

To create an overlay you have to:

  • Give the app permission to draw over other apps

  • Give the app permission to use Accessibility services (the permission is found in settings/system/accessibility

  • Calibrate the app

To play music using the overlay:

  1. Tap the "OVERLAY" button

  2. Open Sky

  3. Press the music note icon to select a song

  4. Press the speed dial to select a speed

  5. Press the play button to play the song (That's all)

If the app automatically pauses you might have to close the instrument in Sky and reopen it.

  • Open the Save page by clicking the sky icon in the action bar

To save a song:

  • Paste the song you want to save into the box

  • Press save

To update a song:

  • Paste the updated script with the same title into the box

  • Press save

To delete a song:

  • Select a song using the drop-down menu

  • Press delete

The app supports two song formats: sky scripts and ABC123. Every song must use either of these formats or else the app cannot play it.

Song Titles

To save a song you need to give it a name. A song title must lie before the script and must be separated from the script with "||"

For example:

Song title|| 1 l 2 l 3 j 4 g 2 l 1 2 5 l

or:

Song title|| A1 A2 A3 . A4 . . . A2 A1 A2 A5

Playing Music (Notification)

  1. Paste a sky script into the correct box or select a saved song. If you don't have any sky scripts, go to the script page of this website or create one with the Composer tool

  2. Enter a BPM

  3. Create a Notification using the button

  4. Open "Sky: Children of the Light

  5. Press "Play Music" in the notification

  6. Open an instrument in sky

Disclaimer:

Sometimes the app will not recognize that Sky is open and therefore pause. If this happens: close your instrument in Sky and re-open the instrument after you've pressed play in the notification. If this does not fix the problem then you can try restarting Sky.

Calibrating Sky Music Studio is necessary for the app to function. To calibrate:

  1. Open the calibration page in Sky Music studio

  2. Open Sky on your device and select an instrument so that you can see it's buttons

  3. Take a screenshot

  4. Open sky music studio and upload the screenshot using the "UPLOAD SCREENSHOT" button

  5. Tap the "START CALIBRATION BUTTON"

  6. Follow the instructions:

6.1 Press the top left button on the instrument

6.2 Press the bottom right button on the instrument

  1. The calibration is now complete

Composing music using the music studio

On the composer page in Sky Music Studio:

  • To record button presses the red record button must be selected

  • To add a note press the corresponding button on the keyboard. If you add multiple keys without adding a delay it is seen as a chord.

  • To add a delay press the space bar:

A single delay is created by pressing the button once, a double delay is created by pressing the button twice, and so on.

  • If you are transcribing from a Sky Studio sheet: add one delay between each box as in the video below

Composing song by hand is tedious and prone to error. Using the music composer is therefore strongly recommended. If you want to do it anyways, follow the rules below.

General rules:

  • Each command must be separated by one space

Notes and chords:

  • To add a note, add the correct number 1-15 to the script (see the diagram below)

  • To create a chord, add multiple numbers in a row

Delays:

  • To separate notes, add a delay

  • Different letters correspond to different delays (see the guide below)

  • It is possible to add multiple delays after one another

  • If you are transcribing from a sheet: a delay of 1 separates two sixteenth notes and a delay of 4 separates to quarter notes and so on and so forth...

Letter to delay:

l = 1, j = 2, h = 3, g = 4, f = 6, d = 8, s = 12, a = 16

On some devices the app might not behave as expected. If you are experiencing problems, try to solve them using the guide below:

No notification shows up when I press the button.

There are three main reasons for why a notification might not show up.

  • Your phone blocks the notification:

    • Check if your phone is in do not disturb mode: settings -> apps & notifications -> notifications -> advanced -> do not disturb. Turn the setting off.

    • Check if you have notifications turned off for the app: go to settings -> apps & notifications -> see all apps -> Sky Music Studio -> Notifications. Turn notifications on.

  • You have not granted the app access to accessibility tools:

    • Go to settings -> system -> accessibility -> Sky Music Studio. You have to turn this permission on.

  • You have not calibrated the app:

    • Tap the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the app

    • Select "calibrate"

    • follow the instructions in the app or on this page

A notifications show up but I can't play any music:

  • Make sure you have entered a sky script and a bpm

  • Try recalibrating the app.

Love this app so much. Helps with practicing music, compose new materials, and choose from various types of instruments and keys. This is truly an awesome app!! But I only have one thing. I know they added the Chinese lute in the game and I was hoping an update would pop up for this app to add the new instrument. But other then that this is an extraordinary app to use!!

love this app and use it all the time to practice, but i nearly rioted when i went to practice something i composed in Ab and found all my notes were replaced with jumbled garbage
