Protect Floors from Furniture

Just like foot traffic, how often your furniture moves will play a part in choosing the right type of furniture pad or chair glides. For heavy pieces of furniture that won’t be moved at all, you have a wider range of furniture pads to choose from. While thick pieces of felt or rubber work well with heavy furniture.

In dining rooms or kitchens, you will have high furniture traffic, so choosing a felt pad can be a good option. Plastic pads or glides will wear down over time, so be sure to check the life of your chair glides periodically. Depending on your kitchen floor, rubber might need to be avoided for scuff marks.

In family rooms with couches and sofas, consider how hard the furniture will be treated. Will kids jump on the couch, or will you plop down in your favorite chair after a long day of work? These types of actions will cause small movements, so choose your furniture pad wisely. A rubber pad can do well in this scenario since it will help to restrict furniture movement.

twitter announced today that it will be removing its implementation of stories dubbed “fleets.” the feature was either loved or hated by twitter users since its initial release last year.

this short-lived feature, which was released in november of last year, will be removed on august 3. twitter acknowledged the controversial nature of the snapchat/instagram clone with the farewell tweet. notably, there was no fleet from the main twitter account announcing the departure of the feature, only a standard tweet.

in the goodbye, the company said it is working on “new stuff.” one can hope that they add the ability to edit tweets, in addition to the new edit audience and monetization features.

in a more detailed blog post, twitter shared that it hoped fleets would make people more comfortable posting onto twitter. as fleets disappear, some of the fleet creation features, like gifs and stickers, will be implemented into the standard tweets composer.

The 6 Best Furniture Pads For Hardwood Floors

Two things that are true with all hardwood floors: They're expensive to install and they can scratch relatively easily. That's why investing in a set of furniture pads is smart decision. The best furniture pads for hardwood floors are made with soft felt, which slides across the floor without risk of damage. They come in a range of shapes, sizes, and colors, so you won’t even notice they’re there at all.

The best felt pads for hardwood floors come in several styles, so you can choose the application method you prefer. Most of them simply stick to the bottom of furniture feet with adhesive backing, which is a solid and economical choice. However, the adhesive can wear off after a while, or can become a magnet for dust and hair, so if you’re concerned about that, you have a few other options. Formed pads — which are the easiest to install — are shaped like small cups, and they grip the bottoms of furniture legs. Nail-in pads attach to the legs with spikes, and while they do require drilling for the best fit, they’re the most budge-proof option you can buy. Last, you may want to consider a set of furniture socks. While they’re a bit more obvious, the elastic material guarantees a snug fit, and they can machine washed to keep them looking fresh.

Pads typically come in a range of sizes to fit a variety of furniture legs, but some larger pads are designed so that you can cut them to the exact size and shape you need. Beyond that, you can choose from colors that blend right in with your furniture, like beige, brown, and black. For more details on the best furniture pads for hardwood floors, keep scrolling.

The Best Basic Adhesive Furniture Pads

These durable round felt pads from Super Slides are a great deal that should work for many needs. Not only do they have a strong adhesive, so they won't slip if you move your furniture around a lot, but they're available in a wide range of sizes — from 1 inch to 3 inches — as well as a variety of colors, including black, brown, gray, and linen beige.

A reviewer wrote: "We moved into a new house with dark hardwood floors, and I'm a fanatic about keeping them scratch free. I don't mind a little patina from everyday wear and tear, but these keep furniture from sliding and gouging the wood. I put them on everything (literally). They stick well, and I haven't had any problems after two bags."

  • Available colors: black, brown, gray, linen beige
  • Available sizes: 0.75 inch, 0.87 inch, 1 inch, 1.25 inches, 1.5 inches, 1.75 inches, 2 inches, 2.5 inches

The Best Pads That Can Be Trimmed To Size

Have extra-large or irregularly-shaped furniture or other items you want to add padding to? These heavy-duty, 8-by-6-inch felt pads for hardwood floors may be what you need. They feature a strong adhesive backing and an oversized design that lends itself to being cut to the size and shape needed. You'll get eight sheets of these furniture pads, and if beige isn't the right color, you can get them in brown. Amazon buyers rave and have given these pads an impressive 4.6-star overall rating after more than 1,800 reviews.

The Best Formed Pads

If you’re worried about adhesive wearing off over time, it may be worth spending a little more for these heavy-duty felt pads for chair legs. The formed pads have a cup-like design that fits onto the ends of furniture legs — no glue or adhesive required. They come in three colors — beige, brown, and linen — and four sizes for a snug fit.

A reviewer wrote: “These formed cups stay where you put them on furniture legs, and they provide effective glide across wood and tile floors.

  • Available colors: beige, brown, linen
  • Available sizes: 1 inch, 1.25 inches, 1.5 inches, 2 inches

The Best Nail-On Furniture Pads

These nail-on furniture pads are virtually guaranteed not to budge, but they do require a little extra work — you’ll have to drill a pilot hole in the bottom of the furniture leg before inserting. Once the spike is inserted, however, you don’t have to worry about the pad coming off or getting loose. The affordable 40-pack is available in black, white, and brown, and in a small variety of sizes, ranging 18 to 28 millimeters (about 0.7 to 1.1 inches).

A reviewer wrote: “The nail on felt tips provide protection for our newly installed hardwood floors. Dining room chairs and end tables are new longer a worry if scooted across the floor. Our beautiful floors are scratch free!”

  • Available colors: black, white, brown
  • Available sizes: 18 mm, 20 mm, 22 mm, 24 mm, 28 mm

The Best Furniture Socks

Designed specifically for chairs, these furniture leg socks are made from a heavy-duty blend of cotton and stretchy spandex. The soft material is gentle on hardwood, but the interior of each sock is lined in grippy rubber to keep the socks firmly on the chair legs. While they’re not quite as unobtrusive as the other options on the list, they do come in four sizes and six colors for the most streamlined look possible. The best part? According to reviewers, they’re machine-washable, so you can freshen them up whenever you want.

A reviewer wrote: “Love the socks. They fit perfectly and my chairs slide easily without scratching my hardwood. I only wish i had found them sooner. Highly recommend.

Flooring Tips: How to Stop Furniture From Sliding

If you have a hardwood floor, you probably have to reposition your furniture frequently. No matter how many times you tell your kids to not jump on the couch, it seems to find its way further and further back from where you stationed it.

Aside from moving your couch where you don’t want it, constantly sliding furniture can have a negative impact on your hardwood floor. Unlike other flooring like carpet, hardwood’s aesthetic quality can be compromised if it’s not taken care of.

Don’t fear—keeping your furniture in place isn’t that hard, and fixing this problem will greatly increase the value of your hardwood floor over time. Just like refinishing or deep-cleaning your floor, this process is a necessary fix to ensure your hardwood floor keeps its quality and appeal.

While we can’t keep your children from moving your living room couch, there are a few quick remedies to keep your furniture in place.

Rubber Pads

Square Chair Leg Caps Rubber Feet Protector E1500412717473

Probably the cheapest option, rubber pads can be used to keep chairs, sofas, and other pieces of furniture from sliding. Simply purchase a set of rubber pads from a home improvement store, such as Lowe’s or Home Depot, and place them under the legs of your furniture.

You can typically choose the size of your pads in order to align with the legs of your furniture, so be sure to measure the area of your furniture legs.

Furniture Grippers

If you want to upgrade from standard rubber pads, furniture grippers may be the way to go. These products come in different textures and can sometimes be customized to fit your furniture pieces.

Square Overlap

Again, make sure to measure your furniture legs—this will allow you to get the most efficient grippers that are also inconspicuous. Grippers may be more expensive than rubber pads, but they typically last longer and can be more effective.

Dust Your Hardwood Floor

Dust is not only unpleasant and uncomfortable, it can cause furniture to slide even more. Keep your hardwood floor clean and dusted to minimize sliding among furniture.

If you’re using rubber pads or grippers, dust can wear down these products quickly. Even if you are using these grippers, be sure to dust your floor often in order to keep your hardwood clean and minimize sliding.

Rugs are an aesthetic solution to sliding furniture, especially if your furniture is close together. The fabric of the rug will keep your couch and chairs from sliding, and also act as a comfortable surface to walk on.

Whatever rug you choose, make sure it goes well with the design of your room. If your rug begins to slide, you may need to invest in a non-slip pad to put under the rug.

Stop Blocks

Stop blocks can be very effective for recliners and other large pieces of furniture. These are usually more expensive than rubber pads or grippers, but you can also create your own stop blocks at home.

Simply trace the shape of the furniture legs onto cardboard, then cut out wooden blocks using the patterns. Placing these blocks in between the furniture and wall will prevent your recliner or couch from moving out of place.

Leg Felt

It’s not only important to prevent sliding; it’s also crucial to make sure sliding doesn’t ruin your hardwood floor. Buy some felt for your furniture legs to prevent scratching on your floor.

Cutting pieces of felt and placing them on your furniture legs may do little to nothing in preventing your furniture from sliding, but it will certainly keep your legs from ruining the floor when they do slide. Felt is great to use on pieces of furniture that need to be moved regularly, such as dining room chairs.

Whichever method you choose to fix your sliding furniture problem, pay attention to detail. Keeping your hardwood floor clean and making sure your products are appropriately measured are a must.

Don’t compromise the quality of your hardwood floor - the aesthetic value and quality of your hardwood is what sets your home apart from others. With a few pads or grippers, along with regular floor care and maintenance, you can keep your living room couch in place and your floor damage-free.
