U me us food pantry

U me us food pantry DEFAULT

For nearly four decades, University District Food Bank has helped prevent hunger in Northeast Seattle neighborhoods. Each week, more than 1,300 different families receive the groceries they need to prepare nutritionally balanced meals at home.

In July 2016, after an incredible history at University Christian Church, we moved into a purpose built new home co-located with 49 units of affordable housing operated by LIHI and YouthCare, a job skills training café operated by Street Bean, and an amazing rooftop garden where we grow produce for the food bank.

Last year, we had over 68,000 customer visits and distributed 3.1 million pounds of food.

Approximately 19% of our customers are infants and children, 63% are adults, and 18% are senior citizens.  17% of our customers are homeless and we try to provide them with ready-to-eat foods when they visit the food bank.

Our home delivery program reaches almost 500 home-bound customers every week. Our backpack program, at 14 nearby schools, provides almost 650 kids with meals and snacks for the weekend when school meals aren’t available.

Our two off site food pantries located at Mercy Magnuson Place and North Seattle College provide another 250 households food.

Two-thirds of our food bank households have at least one person working at a job  full time but rely on the food bank to help save a few dollars to use for other monthly expenses. One-third of food bank customers report looking for additional employment.

Your Right to Receive Food

  • to receive food and/or meals at no cost
  • to NOT be required to participate in a religious event, or pay dues as a condition of receiving food

What to Expect When Visiting a Food Pantry, Food Distribution or Mobile Food Pantry

When you arrive, the agency representative will ask you to fill out a basic form to show that you live in the area and ask that you declare that you need help with food.

Consider bringing a food cart or several reusable bags to take your food to your final destination. Assistance may be limited. Be sure to ask how often you may visit or use services.

Many of our partners provide additional support services such as help paying for bills, job training, health services and help with transportation. You may be required to provide additional information to the agency to receive help.

Is the weather bad? Is it a holiday? Call our hotline to see if any of our food distributions are canceled:  512-684-2559.

Pitt Pantry

Pitt Pantry Fall Semester Hours and Operations:

Starting on August 27th, the Pitt Pantry will offer no-contact pickup of pre-packaged boxes or the option to shop-through the Pitt Pantry in-person. For either option, you must submit this online request form by Wednesdays at 2 PM. In the form, you will indicate your preference for pick-up or shop-through, and select either an appointment time or pick-up window.

Shop-through times will be held in 15-minute intervals on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 PM. You will be asked to show your Pitt ID and are encouraged to bring your own bags. You will be asked to bring a maximum of one additional person with you to shop-through.

If you choose no-contact pick-up, during the pick-up window you select, your box will be available on the Thackeray Avenue side porch of the Bellefield Presbyterian Church. Upon arrival, look for the last four digits of your 2P number written on your box. Boxes may be heavy, and we suggest bringing a suitcase, backpack, or bags to make the items easier to transport. If you are driving, you can park in the visitor parking spot to the right of the porch. If you do not want all of your food, please place the unwanted items in the box labeled “donations” on the porch.

Produce distributions will be held Tuesdays from 2-5 PM in the Bellefield Presbyterian Church back parking area. You do not need to make an appointment or fill out any forms to come pick-up produce. Produce will no longer be packaged in plastic, but plastic bags will be available for use.

** Please maintain physical distancing and wear a face covering while you are shopping-through! Face masks are also encouraged for pick-ups! **

The health and safety of our shoppers and staff is our top priority, and operations are subject to change based on changes in the University’s operating posture. Please check back often for updates and email [email protected] if you have any questions. Thank you for your patience as we continue navigating this uncertain time!

Pantry Usage Requirements

All members of the Pitt community are welcome to visit the Pantry. Shoppers may take food for themselves and any family members (children, spouses, or partners with whom they share food) but unfortunately, not roommates. If your roommate is also in need of services, encourage them to fill out the form above or contact [email protected]

Your donations truly make an impact. Hear what our shoppers have to say about the Pitt Pantry:

“The pantry has helped me save so much time and money while working as a grad student on a small stipend.”

“Worrying about food was really starting to affect my schoolwork. The pantry had better items than I could have hoped for, and the volunteers made the experience great.”

“I thought it was so amazing that Pitt had a pantry when I first moved here. My last university didn’t have anything like this so when I moved here I felt like Pitt really cared about me and my experience.”

“I spent down all my money because of health issues this month, and could not afford groceries this week so I was very grateful to get a large bag of food!”

“It’s really comforting to know that I can come to the Pitt Pantry and not worry so much about eating.”

Assistance needed

To continue to replenish items, we need your help. Consider:

Welcome to the Binghamton University Food Pantry!

Welcome to the Binghamton University Food Pantry, member of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. We are a temporary, judgment-free place for students facing hard times, such as running short of money for the month or other emergency situations.

If students find themselves needing more long-term assistance, they are encouraged to take advantage of the services offered by the CARE Team in the Office of the Dean of Students.

Pantry access during COVID-19

To lessen the risk of exposure and ensure the safety of students and the staff, the pantry uses an online ordering process. Students can place an order once a week and pick up their pre-bagged items at the Food Pantry in the Iroquois Commons/CIW Dining Hall, first level (just above the steps leading down to the dining hall).

The pantry is located across from The Union and Union bus stop (see our map for exact location). Walk through Lot Q and up the driveway. The entrance to the Iroquois Commons is under the bridge on the left. Once inside, come up the ramp and the pantry is just above the steps that lead down to the dining hall.

Mandatory online ordering

Our online ordering form, linked below, will require students’ first name (for pickup purposes), B number and a choice of day/time for pickup. Food pantry staff will bag the items and have them ready at the requested pickup time.

The Food Pantry offers pickup times four days a week. Please submit your order AT LEAST 24 hours prior to the pickup day you request on the form. Note: You will NOT receive a confirmation or reminder of the date and time you requested to pick up, so make sure to alert your calendar on the date and time you selected. The online ordering form will be available each Friday beginning at 5 p.m. for the following week’s orders. This allows us to make any changes or updates to the form based on the current inventory.

Email us if you are unable to pick up your items or have any questions. We appreciate your cooperation.

Why we offer a pantry

Food insecurity has increasingly become an issue on college and university campuses and can pose a significant barrier to student success. Many students come to campus with limited resources and little experience managing their needs. Hunger makes it difficult to study, sleep or engage in academics and social activities at the same level as peers. If our students' physiological needs aren't being met, it ultimately decreases the chances of them meeting their full potential and their overall experience at Binghamton University. The pantry is equipped to provide a variety of food and personal care items for our students in need.
