How to Open a Microsoft Publisher File on a Macintosh

Files created with Microsoft Publisher, a desktop publishing program that is part of the Microsoft Office suite for Windows, cannot be directly opened on a Mac, due to the lack of applications that can open OS X files in the PUB format. You can, however, open and view the files on a Mac after Publisher converts them to a compatible format.

Launch Microsoft Publisher on your PC and open the document you want to send to a Mac.

Open the "File" tab and select "Save As."

Name the file and select "PDF (*.pdf)" from the Save as Type drop-down menu.

Click on "Save." You can now transfer the PDF file to a Mac user who is able to read the document and, optionally, print it.

.PUB is an old Microsoft proprietary format.

A Google search gives varying answers. Many say is is not possible and others say there are online resources that may convert a .PUB to a PDF.

This one seems to be the most popular. I have not tried it and have no idea if it works.

I still run MS Publisher under Parallels Desktop on one on my iMacs.

I have just discovered http://www.zamzar.com

Everyone on the net seems fixated with converting the .pub to .pdf. But this option allows you to convert .pub to .doc. and .docx. Which is far more handy if you want to edit or work with the document!

The zamzar site converted my .pub file to Word, but all the table borders and pictures were converted to one fixed overlay, so it wasn't much use. It also dropped spaces and changed a few letters.

An HTML file is of no use in Keynote, you need a text or graphic file not HTML code.

I had a Publisher file that I needed and the Zamzar link worked perfectly!! Thanks Shamus71!! I converted the pub file to PDF without issue. I also printed it out and it printed beautifully as if I had done it all myself. Awesome!! 🙂

I decided to go and convert it to Word. What it seems to do is convert the file to a JPG and place it in Word. Mine was un-editable but at least I could see it and use it. You have to open the document and not use Quick Look in Finder to see the final project.

If I had wanted to make changes, I would have been out of luck. FYI- I do keep an old PC around just for this reason. Today I didn't have that PC available.

Open the .pub file in LibreOffice. This primitive program will shift some text and photos, but not too badly. Then scroll down to Export. You can export it as a PDF, a GIF, a JPG, an EPS, and many, many more formats. It is not perfect, but in general, it gets the job done and you don't have to worry about online websites and whatever malware they might hide.

zamzar.com did nothing to my .pub files. It claimed it processed them and said it would email a link to where they were but that never came.

Suk9's link worked perfectly. You drag and drop the files and watch it process, then it pops up a download dialog and you get them immediately. No email address needed.

I would have liked a beautiful .docx I could edit but recreating via copy/pasting is cool, too.

I have an ad for a rental property that I only need every few years (and works like a charm), and my copy of publisher is long gone. Now I can recreate the ad on my Mac.

Thanks, Suk9

Microsoft Corporation has launched Office 2016 for Mac which is the latest office app. Most Mac users have purchased and are using Office 2016 version on their Mac PC and MacBook. But the Office 2016 cannot open publisher files on Mac. In case you have the older Office 2011 for Mac then you can open publisher files. The Word App of Office 2011 comes with publishing layout view feature. You should use this feature to open any PUB file in publisher layout format.

The Office 2011 requires an RTF File to open it in publishing layout. So you cannot open publisher file directly. First you have to convert the PUB File to RTF File and then open it in Office 2011 Word App with publishing layout. In order to convert your publisher file into RTF format, you should use an online converter. It is an easier way to open publisher files on Mac if you already have Office 2011 installed in your Mac system.

03. Online Convert PUB to PDF

There are many online converters available at free of cost. You can use them to convert PUB files to PDF or any other format you want. Thereafter you can open the converted file in respective app on your Mac. In this way, you can easily open .pub files on Mac. Open Publisher Files on Mac

Steps to Convert PUB File to PDF and Open it on Mac:

Important Note: When you convert a publisher (PUB) file to PDF, DOC or other format, it may lose some formatting. You will notice that the picture, table etc. are appearing different in original file and converted file. If the formatting is important to you then use our other methods to open publisher files on Mac.

04. Ask the Sender to Export Publisher File in Other Format

This method is useful if you have received a publisher file via email or you have a friend with Windows computer. The Microsoft Publisher allows the user to export PUB File to PDF, XPS Document, HTML, Change File Type and Save for Photo Printing or Commercial Printer. You need to contact the sender of the publisher file and ask him to export file to other format in Microsoft Publisher. Thereafter, s/he needs to send the converted file(s) to you via email.

Your friend with Windows PC can help you export all publisher files to PDF, XPS or HTML. Thereafter you can get those exported files and open them in your Mac System. In case none of your friends has Windows PC or the email sender is not in touch, this method won’t work. You better try Online Convert to PDF to open publisher files on Mac by yourself.

05. Get Windows Installed on Mac

Every Mac PC and MacBook comes with in-build Macintosh operating system. The Mac OS is best in many ways, but it also has some drawbacks. You cannot open publisher files on Mac directly as it does not provide any app to open .pub on Mac. As a result, you have to get help of a third party app or online converter site or install Windows on Mac. The installing process is a bit lengthy and annoying, but you need to do it only once. Thereafter you can open publisher files on Mac at anytime anywhere with no restrictions. If you don’t want to install Windows on your Mac computer, you should get LibreOffice (method 1) to open publisher files on Mac.

How to Edit Publisher Files on Mac after PUB to PDF Conversion

With help of online converter, you can convert publisher files into PDF format. However, you may need to edit some publisher files when you open them on your Mac. Now your publisher files are in PDF format, so you need a PDF Editor to edit these files. Adobe Acrobat Reader is one of the best apps for Mac to view, open and edit PDF files. But you have to buy its pro/premium version to use PDF editing features in Adobe Reader.

Mac OS comes with Preview App which provides various features. You can open almost all document files in Preview. In addition to showing documents, the Preview App allows the user to do some editing. The Preview App contains the basic editing features for PDF files. So you should use Preview to view and edit the PDF files.

A application to open or convert .pub (MS Publisher) files on the mac? (4 Solutions!!)
Different ways to open and view MS Publisher files

Microsoft Office Publisher files are perhaps one of the easiest and most common desktop publishing applications for anyone to use for creating print publications. With a few tips on how to use MS Publisher, you can start using the application like a professional editor.

Despite all its features and advantages for the common user, though, MS Publisher is notorious for its lack of compatibility with other applications. MS Publisher files aren’t as universal as you would assume.

It poses a major obstacle for collaboration, reviewing, and sharing Publisher content, which is an essential part of publishing print material. Limitations arise if a user doesn’t have a copy of MS Publisher installed. MS Publisher doesn’t have a dedicated viewer for opening or viewing its native file format. Moreover, MS Publisher files are pretty much the one Office format that causes problems for macOS users, because MS Publisher isn’t offered in Office for macOS.

Sound familiar?

In this post, we cover a few tips, hacks and suggestions that can help you open or view Microsoft Publisher files.

1. Convert PUB to PDF

When dealing with a limited file format, the first solution that comes to mind is to turn it into an unlimited, universal one that anyone can view – we’re talking about the PDF file format. Because PDF files lock down and preserve the formatting of its original content, it’s perfect for viewing Publisher content as is. There are two ways you can go about this:

  1. Convert PUB to PDF with Able2Extract Professional:

If you have Able2Extract Professional, you can easily create a PDF of your MS Publisher file. You can download a free trial.

Once installed, follow these steps:

  1. In the File tab, click on the Create PDF button.
  2. Select Create a PDF from an Existing Document and click on Create.
Converting .pub to PDF using Able2Extract Professional
  1. Browse for and select the PUB file you want to transfer to PDF.

Once the file is open, click on the Save As button in the File toolbar to name and save your file on your computer.

  1. Convert PUB to PDF Online:

For those who need a quick, touch-and-go conversion, there’s Publishertopdf.com. This web service does exactly what its name suggests. It does nothing but convert MS Publisher to PDF. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Publishertopdf.com
  2. Upload your file. You can do this in a few ways:
  • Click on the Upload button and select your file from your computer.
  • Drag and drop your .pub file.
  • Upload your file from your cloud storage service of choice: Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive.
Converting Publiisher to PDF using a free online converter
  1. Wait a few seconds. The conversion will start automatically.
  2. When it’s done, save and download your newly converted PDF file.

This tool is free, no email is required, and uploaded files are deleted after 6 hours.

2. Get MS Publisher Content Saved as an Image File

One of the simplest ways is to have the author save the PUB file as a different format. Looking at the options MS Publisher has to offer, image formats are by far the easiest and most common formats to view. Have them do the following:

  1. With the .pub file open, go to the File menu.
  2. Go to Export > Change File Type.
Exporting Publisher file as an Image file
  1. They will be presented with image file options: PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP and JPG. We recommend either PNG or JPG as the most hassle-free and accessible formats.
  2. Click on Save As.
  3. Name and save the new image to their computer.

From there, the author can send the image to you as desired.

3. Get MS Publisher Content Sent in an Email

If you get a Publisher file you can’t open, try going back and asking the sender to use the application’s emailing functionality to send the content in the message body as HTML. Note that this option, however, sends only the current page.

To have them send a MS Publisher page in the body of an email, they must have either Microsoft Office Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail installed. They can follow the below steps:

  1. Click the File tab.
  2. Go to Share.
  3. Select Send Current Page.
Creating an email from an .pub file

Before the sender does this, he or she can preview how the page will look by clicking on Email Preview below the Email option. It will open in a new browser window just as it appears in MS Publisher.

Viewing a .pub file in a web browser as HTML
  1. If Microsoft Office Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail is set up properly – it only takes a few seconds to set up with a hotmail email address (they can just follow the prompts) – the sender will see the below email interface in MS Publisher where he or she can insert recipient info (ie. your email address), a subject line, and copy others on the email:
Sending .pub pages as emails within MS Publishers
  1. Click on Send to send the email.

4. Get MS Publisher Content Exported as HTML/Webpage

This step is similar to the above in that you have the author send it in an HTML or web page format. However, this step allows them to send it as an attachment by using a different email client, like Gmail, for instance. In MS Publisher:

  1. Go to the File tab and select Export.
  2. Choose Publish HTML.
  3. Choose to export your file in one of two formats:
  • Web Page (HTML): This option produces an HTML document with a folder containing necessary files (images, sounds, etc.).
  • Single File Web Page (MHTML): Selecting this will create a single MHT document. All the necessary supporting files will be embedded.
Exporting .pub content as HTML
  1. Set any Advanced Options if applicable (these are accessible below the drop down menu).
  2. Click on Publish HTML.
  3. In the Save As dialog, name your file and the location you want to save it to.

The author can then send it by attaching it to an email, and you instantly get an accessible version of their MS Publisher content.

Learn how to convert PDF to PUB with Able2Extract Pro on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The next time you have an MS Publisher file you can’t open, don’t panic. One of the tips above is bound to help you access that content.
