We've been covering the Victoria Independent School District's bond proposal news since November 2020, when the special task force known as the VISD Bond Planning Task Force began making assessments of what has been deemed as much-needed repair for several VISD schools.

In November they estimated that the needed repairs would cost about $146.2 million dollars. At that time data was offered to the public showing that "VISD's tax rate is at the lowest point in 21 years."  You can read that article in its's entirety in the button below.

VISD Bond Proposal November 2020

The final estimate was completed and was set at $156.8 million as VISD Superintendent Dr. Quintin Sheperd offered in his "Q Newsletter" the willingness of all committee members to hear community thoughts on the proposal. " "There are many opportunities for community feedback, insight, and questions in the next several weeks before any final proposal will be brought to the Trustees for a vote. Please be on the lookout for those opportunities."

Dr. Sheperd Q News

The $156.8 million dollar bond which includes serving 21 of our community schools as well as the rebuild of Stroman Middle School and Mission Valley Elementary was approved in a special board meeting with six out of seven board members voting yes, which means the bond will next be voted on during the May 1st election ballot.

According to the VISD website's special 2021 Bond Election pdf which you can read here, the estimated maximum tax impact for the 2021 bond proposal is 7.5 cents for a total tax rate of $1.2649. This equates to $6.25 a month per $100,000 of taxable home value.

Welcome Back Students and Families!

The start of the 2020-2021 school year will be one for the record books. While the start of this year may look different from any we’ve ever experienced before, the sense of anticipation and excitement hasn’t changed. I felt it the morning during the virtual version of our annual staff kickoff when we welcomed new staff as well as celebrated new births and years of service. Their eagerness to meet their classes and get to work was palpable and I know the rest of our faculty and staff felt much the same.

As we embark on this journey into our improved distance learning environment, it is understandable for everyone to feel some trepidation or uncertainty. However, as a district, we are committed to walking this path in partnership with you. We have amazing tour guides in our teachers and staff and we are all focused on reaching a common destination: equity and excellence represented in the very best possible education for every single one of our students.

To all of our staff members, who officially returned many weeks ago, THANK YOU for your commitment to your professional growth this summer. So many of you have spent the past weeks voluntarily participating in webinars, reading educational blogs, researching best practices in remote instruction, swapping ideas with other teachers, and so much more. You are devoted to giving our students your best and I am confident that they are in good hands.

Students, please know that these first days and weeks of school will be focused first and foremost on helping you establish a sense of community and connection with your teachers and classes. Not just our teachers but also our counselors, social workers, and psychologists know how challenging and isolating the spring was. You are the reason we do what we do and we are committed to providing not just exceptional academic experiences but also making sure you have the social, emotional, and mental health support you need to succeed.

Our unique public schools will continue to thrive while we are in distance learning because of our community of support. Academic supports and digital curriculum are greatly enhanced by contributions from Vashon Schools Foundation, Vashon Partners in Education, Vashon PTSA, Vashon Nature Center, Vashon Center for the Arts, and the Vashon Rotary among others. Thanks to partnerships with Neighborcare, Vashon Youth and Family Services, Sisterhood, Journeyman, DOVE and Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Abuse, our learning community has access to education and resources directed towards mental and physical health.

A final note to our families. We are so grateful for you as we launch this new school year. Our community is fortunate to have families who are as involved and deeply committed to their children’s education as our Vashon family is. Thank you for your kindness, patience, and support, and for entrusting your children to us.

This is an exciting time to be in education. A time full of new opportunities and learning for all of us. I am looking forward to a year when we all rise to this most unusual occasion and provide those things that are best for our students. And so, during these first few weeks back, I wish you a healthy, happy school year. Be resilient, innovative, and courageous. Don't be afraid to take risks, try new things, share thoughts and ideas. And most importantly, don't forget… we got this Vashon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Slade McSheehy, Superintendent

Bienvenidos estudiantes y familias!

Sea resistente, innovador y valiente. No tenga miedo de correr riesgos, probar cosas nuevas, compartir pensamientos e ideas. Y lo más importante, no olvides… ¡tenemos este Vashon!

Atentamente,

Dr. Slade McSheehy, superintendente

2021-22 Plan Year Benefits

A Section 125 Plan provides a tax-saving way to pay for eligible medical or dependent care expenses. The funds are automatically deducted from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis.

Here’s How It Works

A Section 125 Plan reduces your taxes and increases your spendable income by allowing you to deduct the cost of eligible benefits from your earnings before tax. Plus, the plan is available to you at no cost, and you’re already eligible – all you have to do is enroll.

Is It Right for Me?

The savings you may experience with a Section 125 Plan are outlined in the example below. For instance, you could potentially take home about $70 more each month if you participated in your employer’s Section 125 Plan – that’s a savings of $840 a year!

You cannot change your benefit elections for the plan year unless the benefits office receives notification in writing within 31 days of the status change. If the benefits office is not notified within 31 days of the status change, no benefit change can be made until the next annual open enrollment.

IRS specified changes in family status include:

  • Change in legal married status
  • Change in number of dependents
  • Termination or commencement of employment
  • Dependent satisfies or ceases to satisfy dependent eligibility requirements
  • Change in residence or worksite that affects eligibility for coverage
