CuriosityStream review

What isCuriosityStream? This service has been dubbed the “Netflix of documentaries.”  This relatively new streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) service specializes in videos that educate, inform and inspire. CuriosityStream manages to fulfill a specific niche that hasn’t really been filled until now with multiple CuriosityStream originals through its production company called Curiosity Studios, and ad-free documentary lectures, series, short clips, feature-length biographies, performances, lectures and life stories.

More than 13 million subscribers worldwide can access CuriosityStream programs through computers and web browsers, Apple TV, Chromecast, on the iPhone or iPad, CuriosityStream Roku, Amazon Fire TV, the Kindle, Xbox One, Sling TV, YouTube TV and more. Plus, you can cancel at any time.

Why CuriosityStream may be the right streaming service to you

If you like ad-free documentary and educational stories about science, nature, technology, history, society and life, you came to the right place. Unlike any other streaming service, CuriosityStream is for anyone who wants engaging nonfiction for the whole family.

Compare CuriosityStream packages and pricing

CuriosityStream is really quite reasonable.

  • $2.99/mo. or $19.99/year for HD content
  • $9.99/mo. or $69.99/year for 4K content

If you want ultra-HD streaming on your 4K TV, you’ll pay $7.00 more per month. For most of us, however, HD is adequate. Plus, CuriosityStream offers a free 7-day trial. Compared to services like Hulu, that offer a few more plans starting at $5.99/mo. up to $60.99/mo., or CBS All Access that also starts at $5.99/mo. up to $9.99/mo., CuriosityStream is in the running, especially when you consider the kind of content you’re getting.

To see if the service is a good fit for your family, you can browse the full library before signing up.

Live TV channels

CuriosityStream is not a live TV streaming service like AT&T TV Now or Hulu with Live TV. It is a Video-On-Demand (VOD) service like Netflix. That means you don’t have to record live TV, but instead watch all your favorite shows on-demand.

Shows and movies

Shows

CuriosityStream has discovered a relatively untouched niche and made the best of it with outstanding shows and movies not found elsewhere. Just a few examples of all the amazing titles available include Ancient Earth, Eat Well and Be Healthy, an original series called Curious Minds, Muck City and Digits.  Explore what to watch next on CuriosityStream and start streaming today.

Movies

CuriosityStream doesn’t offer 2-hour movies like many streaming services. But, you will find a few titles that offer a full hour of viewing, like Frank Lloyd Wright: The Man Who Built America, The Perseus Survivor, How to Build a Castle, Pompeii: Disaster Street, and more. Explore more titles today on CuriosityStream.

Original content

Not available anywhere else, CuriosityStream has captured the market on original documentaries and exclusive content from some of the world’s best filmmakers. Titles cover a wide range of areas and topics, like Secrets of the Solar System, Prehistoric Worlds, American Icons, The Woodstock Bus, Breakthrough, and many more.

So, if you and your family are curious or just want to learn something new, CuriosityStream has originals that can take you to another world or back in time. If you rather be entertained by something lighter, you may want to choose another service that also offers current movies and local TV viewing.

Our hot take

CuriosityStream offers documentary and educational series, which may not appeal to everyone. However, if you’d like to learn something new, or take a deeper look into an interesting topic, CuriosityStream is absolutely worth it. The $2.99 HD plan is pretty great for most viewing unless you have a 4K TV and can tell the difference.

But, if you’re looking for a more general service with the occasional documentary, you might be better off with Netflix. Go ahead, throw a streaming party tonight with CuriosityStream.

CuriosityStream Review: Is It Worth It?

In this CuriosityStream review, we’ll be going over what exactly CuriosityStream is, the content that’s available, the pricing, and more. Is it worth signing up? Let’s find out!

Is CuriosityStream worth it?

It seems like a new streaming service pops up every single day now, but most of them are generally offering the same thing: a huge ocean of content, half of which you’ll probably never watch. Not only that, but all of this content typically comes at a steep monthly subscription cost.

If you’re looking for a new streaming platform with fresh content at an affordable price, you might like CuriosityStream.

What Is CuriosityStream?

Founded by John Hendricks (the founder of the Discovery Channel) in 2015, CuriosityStream is like the Netflix of documentaries. Instead of browsing for TV shows and movies, CuriosityStream lets you access thousands of documentaries at the click of a button.

Although that may not sound as exciting as binging the latest season of your favorite TV show, you’d be surprised! Once you start exploring some of the content CuriosityStream has to offer, it’s easy to get hooked.

What Content Is Available on CuriosityStream?

How to build a dinosaur documentary - one of the shows

Don’t worry, you’re not going to be stuck with a single type of documentary on CuriosityStream. Just as Netflix and other streaming platforms have different genres to explore, so does CuriosityStream.

These aren’t just any old documentaries either. CuriosityStream has award-winning, exclusive, and completely original documentaries on their platform. They’re constantly adding new content too.

CuriosityStream categories sneak peek

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the different categories you can browse:

  • Science
  • History
  • Technology
  • Nature
  • Society; and
  • Lifestyle

They also have a category specifically made for kids with awesome documentaries that will teach them about nature, technology, geography, space, and more:

CuriosityStream content - kids category shows

Although you probably don’t want your kids to be spending too much time staring at a screen, it’s hard to feel too guilty when they’re watching educational documentaries!

Content breakdown:

Quantum Mechanics documentary with summary and ratings showing

If you’re wondering how CuriosityStream sorts its content, the experience is similar to Netflix and other streaming platforms. When you click a documentary you’re interested in, you can see a few things:

  • Ratings – Each content has a percentage rating from 1-100%. The higher the better. You can even see how many users rated a piece of content to get an idea of how popular it is!
  • Summaries – These are pretty standard on all streaming sites, but CuriosityStream does a great job here. Their summaries are straightforward and descriptive.
  • Related content – Perfect for binging!

As for the length of the content on CuriosityStream, it varies between films. Some of the documentaries you’ll find will be longer, feature films (typically around 30 minutes to an hour long) while others are entire series with several episodes and multiple seasons.

What Devices Can You Stream On?

CuriosityStream devices

CuriosityStream, just like most other streaming platforms, can be streamed on a computer, TV (including Apple TV, Fire Stick, and Roku), tablet, and phone! There are no regional or device limitations either so you can stream on as many devices at once as you want, from anywhere in the world.

On top of that, CuriosityStream allows for offline viewing which is fantastic if you’re on the go or without wifi.

How Much Does CuriosityStream Cost?

With a massive content selection and zero limitations, you may be wondering…”Well, how much is all of this going to cost me?” It seems like something like this would fetch a high price, but you might be surprised at how affordable CuriosityStream is.

For a yearly plan, CuriosityStream is normally priced at only $19.99 for 12 months of HD streaming!

It gets even better! You can get a 25% discount bringing an HD annual plan to only $14.99/year. For 4k, it’s $52.49/year.

All in all, compared to something like Netflix that starts at $12.99 for their most basic, standard definition plan, CuriosityStream is quite the deal!

CuriosityStream Review: Pros & Cons

CruiosityStream worldwide

To give you a real, honest review, here are some things I like about CuriosityStream, and a couple of things I would change to make the platform even better:

What I Like About CuriosityStream

  • Educational content – As I said, I feel a lot more productive streaming documentaries compared to non-fiction content. I still love non-fiction for winding down though!
  • Massive selection of content – I don’t think I’ll ever run out of content to watch on CuriosityStream!
  • Great Parental Controls – pretty much all the content is family-friendly on this streaming service, but there is a “Kids Mode” option, just to be safe.
  • Playback Rate – I love to speed up my content, so I’m grateful for the option to speed up (or slow down) the playback.
  • Flexible streaming – I love that I can stream on multiple devices, anywhere I want, and even offline if needed.
  • Very affordable – With the current 40% off annual deal, CuriosityStream is a steal! And even without it, it’s only $2.99/month for HD streaming. Can’t really beat that.
  • Referralprogram – If you refer your friends to CuriosityStream you can get cool rewards like a free t-shirt!

What I Would Change

  • Big price jump for 4k – I was pretty surprised at first to see how much more expensive the 4k plan is compared to regular HD. I’ll stick to HD myself for now!
  • No PayPal payment option – This won’t affect most but it was something small I noticed when signing up. I would love to be able to use PayPal to pay for my subscription.
  • Better “Video Player” – on my TV (Samsung), we don’t have the ability to skip ahead by 10 seconds, although you can on the phone app (which could cast to your TV).

Brain Overload documentary title

Is CuriosityStream Worth It?

Yes! I can say with 100% confidence I believe CuriosityStream is worth the price. It’s very affordable, and you’re paying for something that’s going to expand you and your kids’ minds which, in my opinion, is worth every penny.

Plus, even though this is an educational streaming platform, the content I’ve seen so far is really entertaining too. It’s learning without feeling like learning. Our Deal Team Manager Stacy even says she’s loving the platform (she recommends the Apocalypse WWI and WWII series).

CuriosityStream review: The online service for science and history fans

Table of contents

If you want to watch a streaming service that’s different than what you might find on Netflix, Disney Plus, or Hulu, you might want to check out CuriosityStream. This science, history, and technology-themed documentary streaming service has thousands of titles to watch. But is CuriosityStream worth the price? Find out what we think in our CuriosityStream review.

Read more: Best video streaming services

If you want to jump in and access the service right now, you can do so at the link below for as little as $1.66 a month.

Sign up for CuriosityStream

What is CuriosityStream?

This streaming service has thousands of both exclusive and licensed documentaries, most of which cover science, history, and technology subjects. The founder of the service, John Hendricks, previously founded the Discovery Channel cable TV network. CuriosityStream first launched in 2015, and currently has over 13 million paid subscribers. In October, the service became a publically traded company on the NASDAQ stock market.

How much does CuriosityStream cost?

The service has four plans to choose from. The cheapest plan, in terms of how much you would pay per month, is the HD Annual plan. You can stream the content in HD resolution for just $19.99 a year. That’s about $1.66 a month. If you don’t want to commit, you can get the HD month-to-month plan for $2.99 a month.

If you want to upgrade your streaming videos to 4K resolution, the CuriosityStream cost goes higher. You can get a month-to-month plan for $9.99 a month. There’s also an annual 4K plan that costs $69.99 a year, or roughly $5.83 a month. However, the service does tend to cut the prices on its annual plans during holiday time periods, or during events like Black Friday. If you purchase such a plan during those periods, you could save even more money.

Is there a CuriosityStream free trial?

If you order the service directly from its website or apps, there is no free trial available for any of the plans. However, if you sign up for CuriosityStream via a channel on Amazon Prime Video, the Roku Channel, and others, you can get a seven-day free trial. You can cancel at any time before the trial period ends to avoid charges.

CuriosityStream review: Supported platforms and availablity

CuriosityStream is available on nearly all streaming video platforms. That includes Apple’s iOS devices, Android-based smartphones and tablets, along with Chromecast and Android TV smart TVs and set-top boxes. Apps are also available for Roku smart televisions and set-top boxes. You can find apps for Amazon Fire tablets and Fire TV-based smart televisions, sticks, and set-top boxes. There’s also a CuriosityStream Xbox One app and a CuriosityStream Apple TV app. Smart TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio made in 2016 and later come with their own CuriosityStream apps. Some TiVo devices also have the app as well.

CuriosityStream is available for PC devices, via web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or others via the CuriosityStream.com site. Finally, the service is available as an add-on “channel” for Amazon Prime Video, Roku, Apple TV, YouTube TV, and Sling TV.

As far as availability, the service can be access anywhere in the world where it is legal to stream an outside service. Some countries such as North Korea, China, and Iran do limit access to outside services, however.

CuriosityStream review: Other features

The CuriosityStream apps for iOS and Android both support background play. You can keep listening to a show’s content while using another app on your device. You can also download shows for viewing offline via the CuriosityStream apps for mobile.

CuriosityStream shows and movies

There’s a ton of CuriosityStream shows and movies to stream. Here are some of its more popular programs that we wanted to spotlight in our CuriosityStream review:

A Stitch in Time – Science and history combine with fashion in this series. Experts attempt to recreate historical clothing and fashion using the material and techniques of each time period.

Watch A Stitch in Time

The History of Home – Actor Nick Offerman narrates this series. It looks back at how shelter for humans has evolved. It also looks at how each room in a typical home (living room, kitchen, bedroom, etc) has influenced our lives.

The Story of Maths – Host Marcus du Sautoy examines the history of mathematics. The series also shows how math continues to be a massive influence in our lives.

Is Curiosity Stream worth the cost?

If you are interested in science, history, and technology documentaries, the CuriosityStream pricing is definitely worth your money on the HD monthly or annual plans. The 4K streaming plans are more expensive, but if you have a 4K TV and are a fan of the subject matter, you might want to check it out.

CuriosityStream review: Other frequently asked questions

Q: Can I watch CuriosityStream on my TV?
A: As we have mentioned previously, the service is available as a standalone app for many smart televisions and smart TV platforms. It’s also available on TiVo boxes, the Xbox One console, and many others.

Q: Is CuriosityStream free on Amazon Prime Video?
A:  While it is available as an Amazon Prime Video channel, you will have to pay for the service after its seven-day free trial. There are certain programs that are available as free via Amazon Prime Video, however, including A Stitch in Time.

Q: Is CuriosityStream safe?
A:  Most of the service’s content is safe for viewing by anyone. However, there may be some shows and movies that could be considered inappropriate for young children. There is a Kids Mode that can be toggled in the settings that will keep certain shows off the service.

That’s it for our CuriosityStream review. Ultimately we think that fans of science, technology, and history will have a ton of great programs to watch. The price is also right if you don’t care for 4K resolution. The CuriosityStream for Kids Mode will also keep certain programs away from young children.

Will you be signing up for the service after reading our CuriosityStream review? What programs will you be streaming on your mobile device or TV first? Let us know in the comments!

CuriosityStream delivers groundbreaking, entertaining and informative television programming… straight to your television, mobile device or computer.

And it costs less than a cup of convenience store coffee (per day) for an entire month’s worth of program, should you opt for the annual membership.

In fact, I watched Octopus Encounters with my (almost) 5 year-old son this morning… his pick. He was enthralled from start to finish, albeit it was only 12 minutes long.

  • Hidden Gems
  • Food for Thought
  • Sports Stories
  • Kids

CuriosityStream is accessible via Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, desktop, tablet and iOS and Android phones. You can also view it via the XBox One video game console.

How Much Does CuriosityStream Cost?

As I mentioned earlier, CuriosityStream costs less than an inexpensive cup of coffee per day for a month’s worth of riveting, high quality programing.

The cost is just $19.99 per year, or $1.67 per month, for unlimited ad-free viewing. That breaks down to a mere $.05-cents per day.

I dare you to name one other thing you can buy for a nickel these days?

If you want to treat yourself to the 4K viewing plan, that costs just $69.99 per year, which equates to $5.83 per month… or $.19-cents per day.

Again, I ask, what can you buy for just $.19-cents today?

If you’re not quite sold on the idea, there are month-to-month subscriptions plans available for just $2.99… which is still a steal for the quality of programming, even at $.90-cents per day.

CuriosityStream offers a 7-day free trial via Amazon Prime channels.

But more on that later.

I actually sprung for the 4K package, mostly to test out our new Vizio 65-inch V-Series tv… as  there isn’t much in the way of 4K programming available via the traditional streaming services just yet.

CuriosityStream makes it easy to browse which of its programs are available in ultra 4K, simply by scrolling the mouse over your selection or browsing via the television controller.

Pyramid Builders and Amazing Dinoworld, for instance, are two I am anxious to see.

Amazon Prime subscriptions cost $12.99 per month after a 30-day free trial. Note, CuriosityStream is an add-on package and not included with your Amazon Prime base subscription.
  3. SlingTV – skinny bundle offers a CuriosityStream standalone package for $3.00 per month.

How Do I Watch CuriosityStream on TV?

The CuriosityStream channel is available on your television via Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Android televisions and Apple TV.

You can also add it to your Comcast/Xfinity cable package.

Simply load the channel, if you don’t already have it, and start streaming.

How to Cancel CuriosityStream

Canceling your CuriosityStream subscription is easy peasy via their website or mobile app.  Simply go to your account page and click on “plan details”.

curiosity stream content list | is curiositystream trustworthy | curiosity stream roku

Once you elect to cancel the plan, it will ask you to select a reason for cancellation. It may also ask a follow up question… even so, the process takes no more than 60 seconds.

You will also retain access to all of CuriosityStream programming until your subscription period ends (be it monthly or annual).

If you elected to sign up via Amazon or SlingTV, you’ll need to log on to your account and cancel through them.

I honestly found it easier to subscribe and cancel via CuriosityStream.com… as the only real advantage to signing up via Amazon Prime channels is the 7-day free trial.

But unless you are committed to truly exploring all CuriosityStream has to offer in a week’s time, I’d recommend coughing up the $2.99 and giving it a real go for one month. Just be sure to cancel before the 30 days is up, should you choose to do so.

Would I Recommend CuriosityStream? Final Thoughts.

So, would I recommend CuriosityStream?

The answer is a resounding “heck yeah!”.

In all honesty, I wasn’t sure I’d like it. In fact, when my publisher asked me to review it… I was less than excited.

Not because I am anti documentary… but because I don’t have much time to myself as a mother of four. And when I do get precious time to myself, I like to “veg out”.

I’m not gonna lie.

I like to catch up on my guilty pleasure shows, like This is Us or A Million Little Things.  Maybe try and binge watch Stranger Things on Netflix, or Counterpart on Amazon, with my husband.

My mind is constantly going during the day… trying to keep up with all of the after school activities, playdates, dinner plans, household stuff, errands, workouts, my writing.

Sometimes I’m kept awake at night with scheduling stuff… worries.

So that last thing I want is to watch a film about global extinction or a looming financial crisis.

But then I gave CuriosityStream a shot.

And I’m glad I did.

There was so much programming to choose from.

Things that I didn’t even know interested me… suddenly did.

Whether I had 20 minutes to watch, or more than an hour, CuriosityStream had something that fit my schedule.

CuriosityStream is better than any news program you could watch… because it’s based in fact, without bias.

The creative minds behind CuriosityStream have no agenda. They only want to educate viewers… which is what I want for myself, and my children.

I watched programs with my kids, both in regular HD and Ultra 4K… and I will admit the 4K experience was breathtaking on our mid-level Vizio big screen.

The pictures were incredibly crisp and colors extremely vivid. It brought a whole new level to the program.

My kids even commented that the dinosaurs looked real in Amazing Dinoworld.

Picture quality aside… the direction, narration and cinematography that goes into these programs is top notch.

The topics are vast.

There is truly something for everyone on CuriosityStream… even kids.  Programs such as Penguin Central, Planet Parrot, Wild Dolphins and Ice Age Giants.

curiositystream issues | curiositystream vs great courses | curiosity stream usa

I never thought I’d hear my kids beg to watch program after program… especially at their age (5, 6, 8 and 9).  And especially not a documentary.

It’s mind blowing… just like the quality of programming CuriosityStream offers.
