SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The Sioux City Community School District has been participating in the Summer Food Service Program. The program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, offers free sack lunches to children aged 1-18.

Meals are available Monday through Friday at each of the brick and mortar schools, and several community locations throughout Sioux City.

Workers spend the morning packing both a breakfast sack and lunch sack for any kid that attends one of the serving locations. They typically serve between 4800 and 5,000 meals per day.

Food Services Director Rich Luze said it's important they give these meals as families struggle year around.

"We know there are families out there that struggle on a daily and yearly basis and their struggles don't go away during the summertime and during the school year the children are able to get the meals in school and when school is out the need is still there," said Luze.

Many of the school locations stop serving the meals next Friday, July 30, and the mobile locations will continue serving meals until Aug. 13.

School Meals & Menus

School Menus and Nutrition Information

Sioux City Community School District school meals are carefully designed to provide a variety of food choices that accommodate student preferences and meet the guidelines established by USDA. By limiting salt, fat, and sugar content while increasing the number of vitamins and minerals such as iron, school meals are becoming more nutritious. In addition to helping children become healthier, these nutritious meals have also been shown to improve students’ social behaviors and academic performance.

USDA Free Meal Program

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved an extension of the FREE Breakfast and Lunch program for all Sioux City Community School District students. Free meals will be available through the 2021-2022 school year.

Who can access meals?

  • All students enrolled in the Sioux City Community School District will be eligible for free meals (breakfast and lunch)
  • Students will receive free breakfast and lunch at school.
  • Students enrolled in VIBE Academy, the District’s virtual school, can pick up meals according to the meal distribution schedule at any school during the hours of 11 am to 1 pm.

How does this affect your student’s school lunch status?

Students that already receive free meals will experience no change in lunch status. Students that are full pay or reduced lunch status will be Temporarily moved to FREE status. No meal charges will be made to student accounts through the 2021-2022 school year.

When the USDA ends the free meal program, students will return to their original lunch status, and student accounts will be charged accordingly for the next school year.

Ala Carte Items Are Available

Ala carte options will still be available; however, ala carte items are not covered by the USDA funding, and students will be charged separately for ala carte items. You can pay for ala carte items on the District website. Follow this link to pay your lunch fees online.

Families are still encouraged to complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application.

If your family typically receives free and/or reduced-price meals, you are still encouraged to complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application in order to qualify for P-EBT benefits. Data from these applications also help the District qualify for state and federal funding from grants and other funding sources. These funds allow us to provide enhanced educational opportunities in our District. We need your help to ensure our 2021-2022 free and reduced meal data remains current and accurate. You can complete the Iowa Eligibility Meal Application online or pick up an application from your child’s school.

Latest Sioux City schools’ lunch program offers new benefits

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sioux City Community Schools will launch a new free lunch program called the Seamless Summer Option.

This program, which starts at the beginning of the school year, offers new benefits for families. While the lunch program is still free, parents are encouraged to submit their Iowa Eligibility Meal Application, which could qualify them for financial assistance from the Iowa Department of Homeland Security.

Only one application is needed per household and parents can apply either online here or via a paper application by contacting the school district. Families can submit their application as many times as they want throughout the school year.

Food Service Director Rich Luze said data from the application is needed to determine how much financial assistance families will receive.

Siouxlanders who submit their application also help the school district qualify for additional funding.

“The district really benefits from that in a lot of other areas as well whether its e-rate communications or different funding that they need on the general fund side of it for the education piece of it, so that data is very important to the district,” Luze said.

The district has processed 225 applications so far and they have collected as many as 3,000 in previous years.
